it is also the very first game where speccing for support or tanking is considered selfish while being dps is considering team mate. It is exactly the opposite as every other MMO out there, it goes both ways

Not entirely true, PvE evolves around finding the highest damage build that gives most support. Pure DPS isn’t wanted in PvE either. Anyway, traiting for tanking or healing (support comes in many forms and is very much desired, healing however is only one form of support.) is unwanted, but the developers specifically said that “the trinity is out” so that was to be expected.

I think GW2 is one of the first games I’ve played where simply playing properly is considered “elitist”. It’s mind boggling how far removed, being “elitist” in GW2, is compared to the kittenfest that other games and MMO’s are.

You don’t need to farm mats every day to make sure your have a full row of buffs from expensive potions, grind months on end to get the right gear or to even gain access to dungeons. Nope, you just have to know how to play your class and bam you’re an elitist.

PvE Staff Guardian Build?

in Guardian

Posted by: Rangersix.1754

Rangersix.1754

Just grab the same build as the DPS builds posted in other threads. Going staff is large enough of a handicap on itself, no need to make it even worse by grabbing gear like soldier or rabid in PvE.

In other words, go 4/5/0/0/5 and grab berserker gear. Just replace the sword/focus in those builds with the staff. Again though , if she ever wants to have a way easier time (die less, get more loot a lot faster, be more helpful to your group, ect… ) consider suggesting her to start using other weapons. Virtually all other weapons are better in PvE, unless you want to tag in zergs.

One thing that really keep me from using some of the weapons, like the sword, in PvE (apart from very niche situations) is that they go on a large cooldown once they disappear.

Why can’t they be like conjured weapons from elementalists? They shouldn’t go on cooldown once they ‘naturally disappear’ unless they were killed. They have so little power to be hamstrung like that.

The LS is a crappy single player RPG experience. I was hoping that they were going to abandon the idea when season 1 ended but nope! It’s easily some of the weakest content I’ve seen added to a game or MMO yet. The amount of resources dedicated to this is ridiculous compared to the other facets of the game that are hardly touched since the first few months after the game’s launch.

Ehhh, I agree on everything but your second point. Warriors cannot really…‘bunker’ to the extent that Guardians can, I can think of only one or two builds a Warrior can run to ‘play at bunker’, but those are really only solid on points. As you said, Guardians are without peer the best at condition removal and being tanky innately across all their builds.

But, that is not to dismiss the other three points, Warriors will still reign supreme in popularity.

Guardians are tanky when they trait for it. A Guardian build for damage is far more fragile than a Warrior build for damage and has less CC options in return for maybe more condition cleansing. Overall, Guardians also have only a few tank builds, with most of them evolving around the boring staff+ah crutch.

Increasing Focused Mind to last slightly longer 7-8 seconds in PvE would also help Guards in PUGs somewhat when there’s no Warrior in the party.

I agree that they are significantly out of touch when it comes to their playerbase. To add what I’ve already said in another thread: the main draw for me in GW2, and anyone else I’ve spoken to, is map exploration, dungeons, wvw or spvp. Yet what Anet seems to focus most on is storytelling, something that hardly anyone remembers GW2 for (and if they do it’s rarely in a positive light).

One of the main reasons people like the new season so much is because we finaly got a new map! But what about dungeons, wvw maps or new spvp game modes? You know, the stuff the community makes most content about? Why are they left behind for (singleplayer!) storymode?

The tournament version of the armor are far more unique than any unique PvE skins, which are all easy to obtain or purchasable with gold (which, sPvP players have plenty of access to). And don’t anyone dare to bring up Wurm Armor as being “difficult to get” because all it requires you to do is zerg the Wurms while praying to the RNG gods.

think of how many times pvp players complain about being unable to get pve skins. legendaries. living story backpacks. crafting. pvp players tend to want nothing to do with any of that, yet they are forced to do it if they want it. just like you are forced to win pvp tournaments to get this armor.
I’m glad they are finally adding something legendary. current legendaries are so… mainstream. I much prefer having something no one else can have. doesn’t matter if I don’t have it or probably ever will, because it’s still exiting as it’s something unique and not cookie cutter.

You even call Legendaries “mainstream” yourself, don’t you see that you’re contradicting your entire point by that?

Even if “supporting/defense” is the theme of a guardian, that shouldn’t exclude them from being able to join the meta / having similar qualities (disengage, cripple/chill) of other classes. If guardian is purely a support class in the eyes of Anet, GW2 should be remade as a trinity MMO imo.

Why? They’ve long ago said that damage/support/control is their trinity. Not healing/damage/tanking. Guardians are an extremely strong support and defensive class already, and is why we’re so popular in all game modes.

Rangersix.1754

For PvE either go for full damage or full heal.

In PvE it’s either full damage or full damage, really. Healing in this game is far too weak apart from everyone’s own healing ability. The game simply wasn’t designed to allow characters to act as a healer.

Especially in PvE where the damage you receive is so high, it doesn’t matter if you go full out +healing. If your allies can’t dodge, they’ll immediately die after the next swing regardless of what you do (tome of courage might make a difference sometimes, with it’s #5 ability, but it’s unaffected by +healing anyway). The only difference you can really make is by adding more damage.

Adding +healing on your gear for PvE is never anything more then a placebo.

What spec works best with a healway guardian?

Rangersix.1754

Keyword: You. Renewed Focus is the most selfish elite the guardian has, and it’s more commonly used probably because it’s good in bunker builds, it’s easier to use, and it’s more easily inserted into builds. The tomes typically require specific builds and good positioning to be used at maximum efficiency, whereas RF is a panic button that can be used in most situations.
ToC not being useful is very debatable. I wouldn’t recommend it on a build that doesn’t use consecrations (since those protect tome users very nicely), but it simply being “not useful” is just not true.

Renewed Focus is not seflish as it a) allows you to support much longer because it gives a lot of survivability and b) allows you to instantly reset your virtues, which can be very powerful for your allies (heal, condi cleanse, aegis, protection, blinds, ect…). It’s seriously NOT a selfish elite.

The problem with tome of Courage is that it turns the Guardian into a sitting duck. If you’re facing a few experienced players they’ll jump on you the second you cast it and there is nothing you can do to avoid getting destroyed/cc’d apart from putting it away again. It’s one of the reasons why meany ‘support’ Guardians in WvW guilds are also switching over to RF.

PvE’ers need to farm gold and/or mats for those back pieces, just like you? Or is WvW suddenly unable to use the TP?

If you call anything that’s available on the TP ‘exclusive’, then I think you don’t really understand what ‘exclusive’ means.

Healing scales terribly on a Guardian. The only skills that scale somewhat decent are Empower (16-20 second CD depending on your traits) and Selfless daring, which adds healing to your dodges, it doesn’t turn your dodges into heals. If you start using dodges as heals you only make sure that you can’t dodge when you need them to survive. “I have dodges to spare”, is something that only inexperienced or bad players would utter.

Unless, like some people, you think a coefficient of 0.125 is “good”.

I’d assume “carrying” is a foreign concept to that group of Pugs. They let him do his thing while they did their’s. You could contribute in your own way and no one was breathing down your neck like a nosey supervisor.

So you’re basically talking about a situation from before Everquest or Ultima Online? That’s almost 18 years now, you’d think you wouldn’t bother with something that annoys you for that long.

Terrible for PvE due to no offensive stats.
Terrible for WvW because of the Low power and it’s primary stat is toughness rather than vitality. Healing also scales terribly and due to many other sources of incoming healing, it’s far better to stack vitality anyway. Full sentinel/sentinel+soldier is tankier than full nomad for any class.

In short; it’s basically a bad stat combo that would have a place in some niche sPvP bunker builds, but is quite underwhelming in all other parts of the game.

Because 4/5/0/0/5 actually does more dps because of the Power of the Virtuous trait and through more reflection uptime from the concecration trait combined with +20% damage when aegis is up.

No, you are wrong about the DPS bit;

And reflects are a form of support too. Also, you often swap out UC to run Master of Consecrations + Absolute Resolution, as you’ll find many theorycrafters and “high end” guilds write down.

A few examples that everyone probably knows are;
- AC part 2, where you have to kill the breeder.

We’re just complaining about gearing/traiting for support being useless.

Then explain why 4/5/0/0/5 is more common, recommended (by theorycrafters and “high tier guilds”) and more suitable for most situations than 5/5/2/0/2 or 4/6/0/0/2, despite the latter 2 having more DPS for Guardians?

Yes, they matter, but they are negligible in the overall scheme of things.
You don’t need to build your traits or gear around those support skills, because of the limits of condition caps, defiance, and unshakable. Damage roles, with damage traits, gear, and skills are superior, because you can just burn down enemies in a corner, without worrying too much about building a needed support role.

No, you are completely wrong about that. Without reflects, blinds, aegis, stability, etc… you aren’t able to do that damage because you get one shot, interrupted, ect… . It’s why Guardians are so popular in dungeons and especially in fractals.

If what you said was true, then everyone would be bringing necromancers without thinking twice. Necromancers bring excellent damage, but they bring nearly no group support. Thus they are far less in demand.

Just the fact that they drop waterfields, makes them infinity more useful than a ‘healing’ Guardian.

The balancing point should have been that all classes could heal/tank/dps in some fashion without dedicating one person to a single role. If you wanted to spec more into healing and be good at it, it should be possible.

That would solve nothing; look at other MMO’s that have hybrids. People still trait/specialize in what they want to play and most of the time that’s as a damage dealer. You’d still be stuck with queue’s of 45 minutes because the amount of people that want to play a healer is significantly less than DPS.

You can still be a healer/support without being a “healing class,” per se. For example warriors have traits that allow their shouts to heal and then another one that gives their shouts reduced cooldown. Guardians have stuff that grant regeneration to allies and remove conditions and all that good stuff. I think almost every class has a way to trait into a healing/support role.

Yes and they’re generally considered terrible builds outside of sPvP.

d) The regeneration boon does not scale with your own gear. If you provide a regeneration boon to someone else, the amount of health they regenerate depends on their own amount of +healing, not yours. Example of a Guardian’s ability to apply regeneration is the mace’s symbol (#3) and ‘Hold the Line’.

Are you sure about that? I just now tested this to see if it was true. My regeneration heals me and my target for 311 hp per sec. And the person I tested it on has 0 healing power while I had 1600+.

What might occur is other players regeneration is taking priority over the one you are giving. So it gives the illusion that regeneration is based solely upon the receivers healing power and the not the provider.

Hmm, you’re right I suppose. There are other abilities with similar names that I think I’m mixing it up with, I’ll remove it unless I can prove otherwise.
