If you think you have The Right Stuff, please read and answer the following questions carefully. If you want to be the best of the best with honours, these are the kinds of things you will be expected to know instinctively.

1) 20man team from Server A hitting Hills on our borderland, 20man team from Server B hitting Bay on our borderland. You have 20 core team members and approximately 10 randoms following your commander tag.

2) We are defending Garrison on our borderland. 10 defenders, around 25 attackers. We have no supply left and they have 2 alpha golems on the inner gate (come from via watergate). One of our scouts spots a further 20 enemies incoming.

They did the right thing by perturbing the scores to do the match-ups. This is actually (mathematically) necessary to allow the ratings from different tiers to be comparable. It’s just the deviation that needs to be toned down a bit. I see this coming as a simple fix in the near future.

Lets just say they were a little over-enthusiastic then. If they tone it down I’ll be a little kinder to/about them

Didn’t really enjoy this week if I’m being honest.

Had some fun fights vs Piken.

Against RS we were either steamrolled by insane numbers or they ran away if approximately even. Thats not necessarily a reflection on the entire server, just what I experienced when I played. I don’t go EB but I heard many positive comments about RS, so well played to RS this matchup

Yesterday evening, I did chuckle in our Garrison when Piken were setting up superior cats. I was the ele doing 1-man suicide runs to attack them. Out of 3-4 runs you guys got me down once. For all the difference it made – you owned the property shortly after. It was funny seeing RS turn up as well for that fight, we wondered if you guys would neutralise each other but it didn’t happen.

However, I had very bad skill lag and later decided I’d had enough. Very large number of Pikens in our north supply camp but having to waiting several seconds to get off key abilities was too frustrating. Logged, did some music, played Neverwinter for a while.

I am deeply suspicious that ArenaNet’s matchup method, despite what they say in public, is actually just a battered D20 and a set of old D & D Dungeon Master lookup tables.

Blamethrower, 1200 range. Enemies target each other for 1 seconds. + 0.1 seconds for every infraction you’ve gained on forums without being banned.

Wascalizer: Enemy turned into a wabbit and a big cawwot dwops out of the air on them (similar effect to Dwagon’s Tooth). Any chat for the next 60 secs the letter “r” is replaced with “w”.

Breathalizer: Enemy can only move forward in a straight line in the direction they were already facing for 5 seconds. If they change direction they are stunned for 2 seconds.

Bubblewrapper: Big bubblewrap appears and enemies cannot hurt you for 3 seconds. However, you cannot move as you’re distracted bursting the bubbles.

Club o’ Clubs: Anything the target types in team or map chat for the next 30 seconds comes out as “Oontz”.

Nope. I’ve never played Paranoia. Nuh uh.

Any T6 server or below would probably do the trick. With the randomised matchups its harder to predict with 100% certainty how to avoid accidently facing against a massive-numbers server but using that as a rule of thumb that should probably do it.

This public service announcement was brought to you by the need for light morning/afternoon coverage because most of our community fears daylight. This would not suit huge guilds as we don’t have that much of a need. Also, small guilds tend to work harder to integrate as we promote a bully-free enviroment and no offence, but a lot of the big guilds just don’t quite get it.

We asked our best and brightest to come up with a recruitment post. They were on a break. So I did it. If I have offended anyone, please get in touch with our complaints department. Which is me.

I played for about an hour and a half last night on our BL. It was nice squaring off against the various Pikeys. Some nice tactics here and there. I was just running ungrouped. Tbh I’d only intended to log on to say hi but ended up staying a bit longer because the fights with Piken on our BL were good fun.

Outside Garrison, I felt a bit sorry for VII when our guys got reinforced and you got steamrolled but because I’m shallow the lootbags made me feel better almost immediately. That warm glow lasted about 2 minutes because I was one of the small team that went to Water to get the camp and we got completely trashed by you guys. Bravely, I made it out alive, leaving Cheeky Chap’s corpse to feed your team.

Never leave a man behind? Lol

(It was nice revenge on Cheeky actually for all the times I’ve been getting steamrolled and he’s a dot on the horizon cackling like a mad thing )

Bumped into GoW just north of quarry when I was on my way to do the JP. Fortunately, I bumped into you guys the same time a Praxium guild group did too. We won that round but I saw from the map there were crossed swords there for some time afterwards. I’m guessing you guys were having at it for a while later too

Logged off about 9pm as we were prepping to retake Hills.

Conversely, after being steamrolled by overwhelming numbers it tells you that it is ok to have a go at taking your home borderland’s property back. Swings and roundabouts really.

It is also sometimes a useful clue that an enemy is switching BLs to bring in supply.

So overall I think there’s good and bad but I don’t mind if it stays.

On GH we’ll form up into large numbers a) if we need to versus a server with a higher population and b) can actually find that many people.

Mostly though its guild groups and relatively small scale stuff in terms of what people experience in the high tiers.

If we’ve had to form up then the blob will last a bit past the need for it as people naturally gravitate towards each other like psychopathic penguins trying to keep warm. It dissipates over time though.

I can’t really comment on EB as I stay out in the borderlands.

Off prime time though, you won’t find anything much. Its a zerg if two people log on and happen to be on the same map. There’s rumours of up to 5 being spotted out of hours but thats just crazy talk. We sent the person with the crazy wild eyes off for an MRI.

Aye, I couldn’t care less about Glicko. I want fights which I may lose but have a chance to win. I want overarching strategy in which we can make choices, take risks and have a chance of winning. Might lose territory but in a match up to at least have a chance of seeing a difference.

I don’t give a kitten about some meta rating that spreadsheet-lovers can get excited about if my in-game experience sucks like a nuclear hoover.

Gaining rating <> winning.

Winning is controlling territory and winning fights.

Everything else is just meta or excusing losing.

Rating is what you are fighting for! Rating is the thing that remains with your server when the match is over. GH currently fights over expectation, and that’s why you win most.

Partly playing for fights, partly when possible for the larger strategy. For decent fights they need to be relatively even. Some meta score that means nothing when you log on means nothing after I’ve logged off too if between logging on and logging off its just a case of constantly getting beaten over the head by up to four times the number of players you can field in any one spot.

When I played on Sunday afternoon, we won a few fights but thats no reflection on the matchup system being good. We also had almost no property throughout the borderlands. So, no chance of playing a strategy because everything is retaken almost immediately.

Yeh, I’m definately not understanding the new matchup system or the big brains behind it.

Interesting that there seems to be some competition for worst WvW design decision

Arrowcarts are silly atm. Zergs are just running around setting them up everywhere because they’re the current “I Win” thing.

But the new matchup system still takes the cake. Arrowcarts affect individual battles, even if they’re being overused in most battles. The matchup system affects everyone everywhere all the time if they play WvW. Thats a lot worse in my book.

I’ll wait and see if ArenaNet either reverse the matchup decision or at least tweak it so you don’t get crazy matchups but this is gamebreaking for me.

I played on Sunday afternoon and the whole time tactics were a waste of effort. Doesn’t matter if you have 20 people being clever, mobile and inventive when an enemy kitten -squad turns up with 50 everywhere you go. I was going to log on Sunday evening and I just thought to myself, “Why…?” and went off and did something else.

Sorry for letting the side down but when the game provider is blindly determined to turn something into “Not Fun” for a large chunk of their playerbase then they can’t really be surprised that “Not Fun” means “Not Logging On”. See how much income your company makes from that business model over time, chaps.
