Midnight Mayhem
Sorry I’m forced to disagree with only 2 servers in a match-up. Games like Warhammer Online highlight extremely well why the 3-way model works best. 2-Way usually means one side is dominant and the other just gives up. In a 3-way, there is always an uncertainty/random factor.
I think ArenaNet have chosen very wisely in this respect.
Guild versus Guild is the meta game, played out on these very forums.
We’ve had some people in the last day or so leave GH and go to Piken.
Seems only fair that TUP And Tainted return the favour. You know, out of politeness and all that
WvW might need some tweaks and bugfixes but its pretty much there. PvE endgame is, in my opinion, very shoddy and probably is more urgently in need of lovin’ to keep the PvE-focused players interested. I only go endgame PvE when guildies need a 5th wheel and I can’t wriggle out.
This game feature doesn’t really bother me. I run as part of a team and when someone goes down, even if they stagger to their feet, they usually go straight back down.
Occasionally one will escape but most times they are out of the battle so it makes little difference to the outcome, and its only the outcome in any given engagement that I care about, not individual kills.
What you are describing is indeed just player scouts. Every server should have them. If you don’t that is your reason that your server is struggling with organisation. How can you organize if you don’t know what is going on?
I personally think radars would mess up strategies and you will get zerged even more, because they know exactly where you are and with how many.
I concur. Its not a failing in the game mechanics but a failure to organise. That may sound harsh but I’m pretty sure we’ve all fallen short in this department at times, and I include myself in this.
We seem to have had some US players join the server. I’m led to believe more are on the way. Chatting to their commander last night it looks like they will be a very welcome addition to the server.
This is probably a good time for people considering a server move to look very closely at GH. Although we’ve lost some good company, we’ve also lost a lot of deadwood, hangers-on and those that just simply don’t play well with others.
You should read Ender’s Game.
One of my favorite books ever!
Really wish they came out with a movie
Wish granted: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1731141/
EDIT: Agree, its an awesome book btw
Commander Name: Uroo
Server: Gunnars Hold
Primary Tactics used: Get other commanders to do the work. Also, to not talk about tactics where enemies can learn them.
Style of Commanding Used: Flashy, with very little substance. But if you hear an evil chuckle on voice comms something very bad is about to happen to our enemies. If you hear singing, it means I’ve had beer. Probably quite a lot.
Not overly worried about the announcement itself. I don’t think we have enough concrete info to say yay, nay or /ragequit.
I’ll wait and see.
I like the downed mechanic and its implementation. I’d maybe shorten the time until you are unrezzable to 2 minutes at which point player is forced to view map only. This adds pressure to rez within a reasonable time and removes corpse cam scouting.
I should have my next looney video ready by the end of the week all being well (only the music potentially slowing it down), which highlights some of the reasons to stay with the community and for potential newcomers to join us.
The Hills assault had me in stitches and is a perfect example of why GH can be horrible to fight.
You have filtered out the mumble conversation I hope? :-D
Looking forward to the next video, for all of Gunnars Hold: the video contest is drawing to an end! start recording and editting.
You make a star appearance, Nid. Notable voice appearances from yourself, Tichai and the big pink freak himself, Slaughtererer. There are a few others but at no point is the comms included to the detriment of those speaking. If anything, it highlights how cool our team is.
I genuinely hope that there is no winning strategy that can be applied in all situations.
It would appear we’ve had some people joining the server from Far Shiverpeaks. Welcome to our new comrades, I hope you chaps have a good time here
There seems to be quite a few people posting on this thread that do not play on Gunnars Hold, do not intend to move here, by inference are only looking to damage the server reputation and are using paper-thin arguments as thinly veiled attempts to elicit a heated response from others.
If these people are unable to cease this type of posting I suggest a moderator locks the thread and sanctions the trolls.
Corpsecam. Doesn’t really bother me. Its usually a giveaway the enemy is up to something and I don’t mind the occasional use of it as misdirection against us.
That said, I won’t miss it either if it is removed.
A) Buy Darkness Falls from Mythic
or
B) Steal Darkness Falls from Mythic
or
C) Do an ArenaNet version of Darkness Falls from DAoC combined with Tomb of the Vulture Lord from WAR. Bring back the Orbs in WvW as the mechanism for opening the entrance (but no buffs from Orbs).
Seriously, all the ex-DAoC/WAR players would have their hankies out. Wiping the tears of joy from their eyes I mean. What did you think I meant? Oh myyy.
Yeh ok I can dream.

Cheers guys. Got to admit I was a bit surprised it was moved into this section since its essentially a WvW video of stuff our community got up to just with a bit of a looney soundtrack.
And there should always be dancing in WvW vids. Always
The core WvW guilds/players still on GH will give most a run for their money.
The only thing missing is numbers. One way or another that will be sorted as a community.
In terms of WvW, we’ve actually lost all the guilds that are difficult or need quick fixes and what remains are solid team players with a lot of loyalty to each other, despite being spread across many guilds.
The next step forward will be taken as a community.
There are only 2 outcomes next:
1) The remaining WvW players stay on GH. This means some tough times but a great core/corps of players.
2) The remaining WvW migrate to another server. Some other server just got really, really lucky. I don’t mean some ‘Big I Am’s just dropped by, but a core of people determined to work with any and all so that the overarching team wins and bring some very devious players to the mix.
I am unconcerned about our future. We just have some admin to take care of.
Good luck in the US, Kiss. Was nice playing alongside you guys.
Its for others to decide if the maths is good. I’m just a dumb nuker of stuff.
Personally, I’m impressed that an ArenaNet dev came out and explained how a mechanic works since that type of thing is anathema for most MMO companies. Kudos to you.
Briefly visited EB last night. Had some good fights, the highlight being defending Rogue supply camp vs a greater number of Pikens. I was pretty sure we were going to get smeared but at the end we were still standing and the enemy wasn’t.
I’ve taken a peek at the scores in the mornings and it really shows when a server has a nightshift vs a server that doesn’t. Both Piken ankittenend to have a lot of property overnight while we have very little.
Some good fights with Pikens, nothing memorable yet from AM. We tend to see AM just leapfrogging around (even at prime time) capping stuff where there’s no defenders but not sticking around for a fight. I accept this is not a complete view as I only have my own personal experience, my friends, their friends, some casual aquaintances, our alliance, some associated alliances and my pet Beagle. (Though I have no idea how he sneaked on to play since he doesn’t even have a login ID, let alone opposable thumbs but he didn’t have anything good to say).
Last night we took a tower from AM and about 20 AM arrived just as we were getting to the lord. We braced for incoming while furiously DPS’ing the lord as fast as possible but none of the AM entered their own tower at all while we downed the lord. There were about 7 of us and by all rights we should have been completely steamrolled.
It was much closer in points at the start of the week but my understanding is that Piken got an influx of Russians? So thats the nightshift sorted and it really shows in the points score as Piken rapidly rocketed ahead of us (I am not downplaying the quality of fights at prime time, its just an observation that the difference in scores accelerated).
At time of typing we are neck and neck with AM but I really don’t rate anything I’ve come across there yet because its more gamesmanship than fighting skill that I’ve seen so far. There were better fights the first week with AM, so I don’t know what has changed this week.
Regardless of how it turns out, and despite some of the negative comments I’ve made above, its been good fun fighting both servers this week.
Yea i hate when people log off when they about to get finish
This is about falling off cliffs, not people who kill their client to avoid losing a fight. Jumping off a cliff makes me chuckle. Alt+F4 is reprehensible and for slimes that shouldn’t be playing in the first place.
Other than occasional bugs and LoS issues, I don’t particularly want to see any changes to keep/tower wall defense.
If you sit on a wall to farm attackers without investing in siege defense you pretty much deserve to lose the property you are inhabiting. There is already plenty of advantage to defending, its just not all handed on a plate to the defenders, they need to actually do stuff to leverage that advantage.
Didn’t know about repair thing, always assumed I’d be paying out whatever way I checked out. Done this a few times when death is pretty much certain but also to see if muppets will chase me off to their death. I’ve killed a few lemmings this way. Its also funny to get rezzed at the bottom while your would-be pursuers can only lie there dead and fume at their PCs.
Watching people throw themselves off cliffs to avoid your wraith is its own reward. I think you’re playing the game wrong.
If you had a wraith, I’d probably be jumping off cliffs to avoid it too
I remember in the early days of Rift, there was a lot of really dense mob spawns and people complained about it a lot. I didn’t mind fighting to get to somewhere. You just had to allow extra time.
In GW2, I strongly dislike the design decisions in the last few zones regarding mob spawns. As per original post it is made very annoying to navigate the game world in the lvl80 areas. Especially in a game where you are forced to kite and dodge in even the most basic combats, resulting in extra mobs often being pulled because they are closely packed. This results in more mobs to freeze/stun/pull and otherwise CC you.
Can you get around this by using waypoints?
A lot of the time, no.
Bugged events to unlock waypoints mean you end up having to travel across the game world most of the time.
Chuckled when I found out that we were facing off against some old friends this week.
I am talking about climbing certain walls using the terrain and get around the front doors this way.
No. Really, no. Nightcapping is bad enough as it is and this would invalidate most of the game mechanics.
I do not want this thread to become a huge discussion about whether it SHOULD BE allowed or SHOULD NOT BE allowed. (I see that happening, though.)
I would like a clear answer of someone entitled to give it.
Then it should go in a suggestion privately sent to ArenaNet. The best you’re going to get is a “We’ll think about it.”
No game studio in their right mind will give a solid unequivocal answer on a subject like this.
Usually find I’m down to 25% health before the thief is even visible on my screen.
I don’t mind being on the backfoot at the start of combat but I’d at least like a chance to fight back.
Sorry, there’s something to debate?
Endgame is WvWvW. Startgame is WvWvW. The bit in the middle is… erm… hmm.
Oh yeh. WvWvW.
Sightseeing the PvE stuff is nice, but less of the crazy talk, eh
This week will be a very fun week. Only just found out that we’re facing off against some old friends that I have the greatest respect for.
Nostalgia trippin’ a bit.
Win, lose, whatever, looking forward to a great week against good people
My Charr is an elementalist.
Only headpiece I’ve found that looks decent on a Charr so far is the reward from AC, and the various pieces that have the same design as it. Most caster headpieces look particularly ridiculous as they are tiny on that oversized melon that passes for a head.
Problem also with leggings since many look like the Charr is running around wearing underpants and socks. Not quite the look of a hero of legend most of us would like our characters to be.
Its my pleasure to work with some of the most evil minds I’ve ever played alongside (and I’ve played with a lot of self-proclaimed tactical geniuses).
Can’t out-gun the Gunnars.
A little vid I made from a montage of WvW tomfoolery. Hope it gives you a chuckle
Btw, some good scrapes this week with Aurora Glade and Abaddon’s Mouth.
Huge fight at Crag a few moments ago, epic battle inside Crag itself after AM trebs took out the wall
Actually, thinking on this a few minutes more…
Orbs could be used to give access to a Darkness Falls type area a la DAoC.
No buffs for the winning side, just somewhere cool to go.
And when the orbs are retaken and ownership changes… let the smooshing begin!
I like the extra range of tactical considerations that Orbs bring to the game but if its not something that can be fixed quickly then I agree removing them is a good idea. Thanks to ArenaNet for responding to the community on dealing with the hacker issue.
Hopefully as per original post they will make a return in some form as a WvW goal – having something that benefits your entire team is a good carrot that motivates people to work together.
Commanders should be able to darn socks and be able to mimic the voices of the entire cast of the next Star Wars film before the cast list is chosen. Its also imperitive that they can make custard that is not lumpy.
You can’t find a merit-based way of doing it guys, any mechanic will always be artificial. Decent commanders will always show above the wannabe-bosses. Decent doesn’t always mean tactical geniuses, just the guys that will work at making their team better. Sometimes that is worth more than a tactical god that can’t communicate anything but hostility to his own people.
Good luck chaps
No, I’m not being insincere. I’m not part of your server and at time of typing actively fighting against you (for this week anyway). I’d just rather communites did well and thats what I see you doing on this thread.
15 defenders vs 25 attackers is a hop skip and a jump away from hopping skipping and jumping on the attackers corpses. Defending by its very nature confers advantage. I strongly suspect that some examination of the way resources are utilized (people, siege and real estate) is required by the original poster.
I’ve found issues in the game regarding survivability but not based on anything in the original post on this thread.
Make guards see through invisibility for x amount of time after a piece of real estate changes hands. Sorted.
Since stealth is not stealth but to all intents and purposes invisibility, this is encompassed in the above simple solution.
Oh wait, was I going back to the original topic? I guess I was
in WvW

Assuming that the server pop cannot be sorted in a local situation for whatever reason, this is so easy to sort in the short term for those that have to live with it for a few hours here or there. Like this:
Completely remove damage to armour for being killed.
People will then take risks instead of thinking “Feck, money is really hard to get in this game, I’m not going up against near certain death”. I know even in equal situations there are relatively few of us willing to do this.
The risk vs reward when outnumbered is far to great in this game because of the extremely tight economy.
Remove the penalty for dying, people will get on with trying. Any stat buffs are gravy.
This is not an issue.
People learn very quickly who to follow and who not to follow. Anyone who spends 100g and does not learn to work with others has wasted 100g of their guild’s money. Have a nice time in your 5man group with a “Come Kill Me” tag.
The cost timewise when you die generally makes immediate sense to old school DAoC/WAR players but possibly not so clear to those that have played small instance PvP in other games such as WoW, SWTOR and Rift.
Its an important part of allowing the side that is killing to actually win some progress because it puts the recently deceased quite rightly into a more difficult position as they lose forces in any given pressure point and become more susceptible to losing in that area they were fighting, rather than being an endless flow of kill kill kill without any change in the shape of a given battle.
I do not want this aspect of WvW to change.
I go where I’m needed. No preference.
Given that ArenaNet loudly and widely declare GW2 to be a skill based game, the mechanics that encourage…
a) servers to recruit people from different time zones
or
b) guilds to migrate to servers with people in different time zones just to win
… rather gives lie to that lofty declaration.
However, I’m not against people being able to contribute out of hours or off prime time. I agree they should get some reward for their time spent but the current game mechanics encourage Player Vs Door combat and the net result is that for servers largely based on a population in one time zone, they can never hope to win, even if they play better and more skillfully with greater server-wide strategy and tactics than at those times they do play their opponents will win simply by having a nightshift that hits doors, reinforces the keeps and lets the points tick over while there’s nobody to contest them. I’ve watched this occur since game launch now and it is consistent and will persist.
This needs to be addressed urgently. Six months from now will be too late for your average joe that goes out for some fun when they get home from work. Again, I have to point ArenaNet at their own widely touted design philosophy that WvW ‘is for everyone’. Persist in encouraging and rewarding servers with a nightshift over those that play largely in one timezone and you undermine your own ability to make money. You might end up with a hardcore subset of the population but ultimately you’ll be left with that and nothing else i.e. you have lean times ahead. That would be a shame for the game that offers potentially the best large scale combat since DAoC.
The only ‘win’ in WvW is beating the other servers. If ArenaNet continue to allow PvD > all then most of the WvW players will stick it out for a while then leave. Fudge the numbers if you like and smile for the public so long as behind the scenes your devs are all over this like, well, programmers in a pizza factory.
First thing I’d do is make the points tick a sliding scale which increases as prime time approaches for a server time zone then gradually drops off as it gets into the small hours for that time zone. Hitting the doors out of hours still generates a tick, still puts the opponent on the backfoot but isn’t (as it is now) an utterly unbalancing deciding factor in which server wins in a given week because they blast ahead on a massive points boost even if they play like turkeys when the other servers are awake.
Skill based game, remember?
After making changes, I’d then offer players/guilds a last chance for a free transfer back to servers in their own time zone, then shut off the free transfers.
Endgame is WvW: Just like in DAoC (there it was RvR).
Good call ArenaNet.
GW2 end game is running around taking towers without any reward ? Thats awesome what can i say.
If you’re not getting any reward, you’re doing it wrong and/or don’t understand how the objectives work in WvW.
Endgame is WvW: Just like in DAoC (there it was RvR).
Good call ArenaNet.
“I can confirm that the vast majority of our players were just as surprised about this as you were. I believe many of our players reported them too.”
Good show. If we get everyone from the various servers stomping on it, the incentive to abuse failings in the game mechanics drops off (though there are some of course it will never deter).
Getting a lot of reports from players over the weekend on this, some screenshots to back it up too, mostly of Abaddon. While I’ve not witnessed it directly, I’ve seen the screenshots.
Poor show tbh. Cheaters reflect badly on all of us, I urge guilds to expel anyone they know has been using hacks/glitches and report them. These people spoil the game for everyone, not just the side they are playing against.
If we have cheaters on GH, hunt them down and report them. I don’t want them on my side and don’t want these scum pretending to be team players.
