This is what I run to do general PVE stuff.
If you’re finding the going tough feel free to mix in some more defensive trinkets.
If you’re still finding the going tough a defensive pet could also be the go, like fern hound, wolf, etc.
Note:- I take refined toxins over shared anguish because I already have access to 3 stun breaks already.
LB provides great AOE with skill 5 and of course because you take the LB trait you can pierce enemies in a line. Keep that in mind when you choose a target because it can demolish groups quickly.
GS maul will also devestate mobs but I generally use it to get around the map as well as to stack bloodlust. GS 5 will also cause a daze which will proc ancient seeds. If you find ancient seeds too single target based then lingering light is also a good option.
It’s pretty efficient at rolling through mobs even if it is a little glassy. Swap to CA and use skills 3 and 4 in quicktime for a healing burst if you need it. Skill 5 is also great at clearing mobs especially if you’ve just used entangle to immob them.
Personally dont mind the pricing that much. It’s a QoL luxury item and should be treated as such. It does not impair the way the game is currently played nor does it provide a game breaking advantage. In other words you dont have to get it and most people have made it this far without it.
This is largely a free to play game HoT aside and you can do everything required in game without spending a cent to make yourself competitive / useful in whatever form you play.
GW2 relies on these micro (well, maybe in this case not so micro) transactions to sustain itself. Comparing its value to the cost of the expansion itself is a very simplistic view to take. A set of skins or an outfit might cost 700 gems. Would 5 outfits also equal the cost of HoT? Of course not.
Get a grip.
Damage is how much it hurts you. Duration is how long the Condition stays on you.
The disinterest in WvW prompted a lot of these changes. Also obviously they’ve been watching Reyanas twitch interviews. The thing that gets me is that a lot of these changes which most people agree with have been suggested for years. Years. Only now at the very lowest ebb of this game mode do they actually make some of these logical changes? What happened to the adopt a dev program? What happened to the countless CDI’s? It isn’t new maps which has killed off WvW. Its the inaction which causes players to depart the game mode because what history can they draw upon to make them think things will change?
While browsing through some old footage of Fresh Air builds (that are dead now btw), I noticed that the Scepter AA looks incredibly amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZqGOKsRMGI (1:03), while ingame it looks worthy of pitty for a “lightning arc”. Was it changed or is something wrong with my settings?
Fresh Air is not dead.
Btw, the condi clears come from your glyphs, however there is a delay so you will have to stand where the bloom pops for condi clear to happen. Attack point bunkers at range with your staff and using your pet to attack them. Your pet will also trigger any DH/ranger traps as well as necro wells. Once they are triggered, swap pets right away to save your pets health and go in for the kill with your greatsword.
I use Celestial avatar in emergencies only or for group support from a bit of range. If you’re in trouble trigger CA, F4 quickly then F3 your enemy quickly then F5 again to swap back to normal. CA is an added bonus but dont count on it to save you. Use it as a tool, not as a crutch.
This is what I run in PVP…it’s not a complete Power Build but its close enough, uses might stacking, and the added healing power synergises very well with your shouts.
Cliff notes:-
Every shout provides 10 seconds of regen for 2000HP. That’s 200 HP per second which can be kept up constantly with your shouts. (Hence why I took guard)
Shouts will also provide 10 seconds of swiftness which can also be constantly kept up.
Do not trigger strength of the pack until bristleback F2 skill is ready. (12 second CD which means you shouldn’t have to wait long) Once the skill is ready, trigger elite SOTP, then trigger F2 and watch your might SPIKE. That added with your pet swapping giving you might from Clarion Bond and Zephyr’s speed should net you a large amount of might. You will hit like a truck.
The low precision isn’t a huge concern, you will get constant fury from using greatsword as well as triggering strength of the pack and pet swapping (clarion bond)
Use staff skills for ranged attack (solar beam still hits hard) as well as kiting. Staff 5 and blasting with staff 3 will also give you a good burst heal.
Traiting into beast mastery means your pets also hit a lot harder and more accurately. I use smoke scale defensively (blind) as well as for safe stomping or if i need an inviz to burst but you can use which ever pet you desire. However bristleback is a must for might stacking in conjunction with strength of the pack.
I also take guard because it provides my pet with protection. If your pet has protection, or any other boon for that matter, when you trigger we heal as one you will also gain whatever boon the pet has including protection. Unless my pet is attacking I am constantly spamming guard.
Greatsword 2 is perfect to use after a weapon swap. Just get close with staff, weapon swap and trigger maul. It will demolish players.
Wow. You are running 4 traps, but you’re not running Trapper’s Expertise trait in Skirmishing?
You should be.
Also, use trapper runes instead of Undead which will give you stealth and superspeed. Should help your survivability a lot.
I would change the build a lot but since you want to keep it mostly intact consider using your pets more defensively. Keep them on passive. Consider taking the Junvenile Pig for the heals, the Siamoth for the inviz/plasma or the Fern Hound for the extra regen.
Think of celestial avatar as a bonus rather than a necessity.
The druid traitline has plenty of utility in it already that I would have happily taken the trait line without using the staff.
GS/Staff for me which provides the right amount of DPS /Support and particularly fast movement around the maps.
Thank you very much.
Such an important website!
Anyone know how long the website will be down for?
Because the last thing most pvp’ers whom ask for nerfs consider is their own ability.
Hmmmm, I had been thinking of making a build with SB. Note I’m on my phone so no builder and this is an untested theorycraft.
Carrion Amulet, Durability Runes.
Shortbow, Staff : Energy/Geomancy Geomancy/Doom
Skirmishing: 331
Nature Magic: 312
Druid: 333Healing Spring, Flame Trap, Poison Trap, Stunbreaker of Choice. I’d go with Glyph or Lightning Reflexes. Strength of the Pack as the elite because you need stability, but Entangle if you’re brave. If super brave and don’t want the stunbreak either, Signet of Stone for tankiness, signet of the wild for more astral force regen.
Basically, you’re looking to have as much CC as possible and spam traps. Quickdraw on SB 2 or 5, staff 3 or 5, those are the priority skills to get the proc on. Lockdown easily harassed targets as much as possible.
I can’t say how the build will perform, it’s an idea that’s been in the back of my head since HoT dropped that I haven’t tried.
That works for me though I would take 332 in skirmishing since you’re using a shortbow. I would definitely go with glyph of equality for the stunbreak as its got the lowest cooldown and it has an AOE daze which can proc your Druid skill Ancient Seeds also.
What pets would you take?
Yes, really enjoying it.
Pug queued my way to sapphire.
Started with a build and changed it a million times since as I refined the way I played.
Have also improved my play quite a bit.
I can control what I can control. While losing sucks, it’s not something I get worked up over, as is the players that I am teamed up with.
Well we all play differently so to each their own
I mean if you didnt look at the build properly take another look at the skills. Cripples, immobes, aoe condi pressure. Entangle. Points become killing fields while you dodge away and spam condis from mid range. You win points by taking down players before they take you down. And im in no way relating this to meta builds. The op asked for a shoutbow build. Shoutbow wont be meta any time soon.
Its not a 1v1 build….it provides excellent team fighting through all the trap fields. Entangle, aoe torch skills, split shot bleeds on axe, split shot poison, aoe traited healing, not to mention celestial avatar abilities.
You can blast the smoke field for 3 second inviz. Or you can use your projectile finishers to spam blinds on your target. I keep my pets on passive though so they are always beside me. I will often trigger smoke field if im fighting close quarters or if i want to stomp someone. Triggering F2 while your pet is passive will also cause them to attack your target.
I still play my vanilla melee pvp ranger regularly and it still holds up well.
@Royale
One flaw, though. You are extremely vulnerable to burst, condition bombs, stunlocks and everything that is going on at points and current meta. Which means if you are vulnerable even to ranged damage, you are vulnerable to everything.
I’d definitely go for Rabid stats in order to survive burst which is going to be your biggest issue. Your damage will not go down much. Power coefficients of your damage output are low anyways.Apart from that the build looks like a promissing template.
I would say that all classes are vulnerable to what you described. I mentioned a vulnerability to range as the build lacks a block, or a gap closer. I play with another variant that eachews the shortbow for a greatsword but the op requested a shortbow build. Chain cc like that you see from dragon hunters and mesmers are something you should be looking to avoid anyway. The build does have a stun break which also causes daze. Using the stun break will daze your attacker causing them to be immobed. Take the opportunity to drop your traps. The spike trap launch will also proc the immob and 5k bleed. Like i said, its inportant to fight in your healing spring when yoi drop it. You also have celestial avatar to go into if you need a quick burst heal or condi clears.
Lastly, and i probably shouldve mentioned this the first time. My pets are always on passive until i trigger their f2. This means for example the smokescale and proc smoke field right on me when i need it. Handy for stomping or blind spamming. The siamoth also gives me inviz or plasma. Again crucial for the way i play and a big help in mitigating damage.
Lastly you can take signet of the wild in marksmanship instead of clarion bond which procs stab and swiftness and a lot more dmg at 50% hp. The runes of durability are doing it for me at the moment though. As you say, the build is prone to all you mentioned but then again most builds are.
The key is avoiding them. Ive not had any issues 1v1 anyone on point.
Yep, this is what I used to level the last few tiers of emerald to get into sapphire. Worked extremely well for me.
Shortbow has extremely good synergy with marksmanship line. Here’s why.
Your opening strike will hit for 25% extra damage AND inflict 5 stacks of vulnerability for 6 odd seconds. Remember, Vulnerability amplifies direct AND condi damage. Shortbow 5 will daze y our target though I would look to spam the other shortbow skills first, the poison and the crippling shot to get your enemy to proc there condi clears etc. Then shortbow 5 for the 2 seconds daze which should give you enough time to strike during the daze.
This is where it gets crazy. Druid skill ancient seeds will proc a 5 second immob and bleed on striking a player that is dazed, stunned, knock back etc. There world will come tumbling down. Use the immob time to switch to axe torch and pour on the bleeds and burns. They will not last long especially as you are taking the vipers ammy which extends condi durations by a whooping 37%, and at the same time still allow you to put on some nice direct damage.
Also note that we take the trait where should bow skills have a loser C and they pierce which is excellent in dealing with big groups .
Remember that opening stirke will always proc on weapon change so each time you swap weapons look for the pain to be dished out.
You will also notice i take a lot of trap utilities as these are easy to lay and do insane damage without you having to even been there. Great for defending points.
When you drop your healing spring (trap) try to stay in it for a bit and spam your projective finshers to proc a whole lot of regen. Remember the trapper trait give 60% extra condi and boon duration they apply, which is why i take healing spring. Its got a fantastic initial heal and you can trigger the combo fields with your projectiles to get a heck of a lot of regen going.
I also take entangle as my elite because I just dont see the value in any other elite.
Lastly, my pets. I tried a lot of of different combinations but the smakescale is probably my favorite followed by the Siamoth which are always useful. The drab back to this build is that its vulnerable to range attacks. So, better to stay on points with easy access to LOS.
Smokescale is fantastic for its F2 ability alone.
Here’s what i’ve been using successfully in pug ranked pvp.
It’s a full condi trap build designed to take and hold points with good sustain. The only issues i’ve had are diamond skin ele’s and on the odd occasion chain cc’s. Otherwise it works well. Build is designed around cc’ing the enemy then pouring on the condis. Switch to staff for defensive purposes. Trigger smokescale pet again for another defensive action (smoke/blind) and staff 3 for another stealth.
When you drop your healing spring is very important. Ensure you haven’t laid down another field first. Dropping healing spring and spamming 1 and 2 on your axe skills provides an insane amount of regen to remember to trigger those skills on point when you lay your healing spring.
You can take lightning reflexes instead of muddy terrain for the stun break however i prefer the faster condi clear as well as the cc that muddy terrain provides. Your torch skills are on a low CD so as soon as you immob someone, get close and drop your traps and torch 5. This should make anyone fighting on your point die from eventual condi damage.
Remember your blast finisher. Staff 3 plus smoke field = inviz. Great for kiting away from point if you need it. And blasting a poison field gives area weakness which is extremely powerful. Dont forget your pets!
Always trigger smokescale when it is with you on point. Always trigger spider skill when you have an enemy immob which should be a heck of a lot.
Need to see your build. DH and Mesmers are only issues if you get CC’d. Otherwise you can dodge roll through DH traps and kite mesmer wells.
If a DH and Chrono catch you in a 2 v 1 there’s not much you can do. A druid has great healing but you’re no tank.
Hey buddy, firstly and this is as general as it gets, you need to ensure your settings are optimal.
http://metabattle.com/wiki/Guide:Tips_for_settings
Go through that and tell us what your settings are.
Personally, in the combat and movement section i only have fast range with indicator checked and everything else unchecked. Make sure you have double tap to evade unchecked. All your actions and skills you should be activating with 1 key press and depress.
The other settings they recommend are pretty spot on.
Next are your keybinds. Heres a good youtube vid on the basics and how it should be setup for efficient play.
You may make things a lot harder for yourself if these basics are not corrected first.
Next i would choose and stick to only a few builds and definitely only 1 or 2 classes to begin with. In PVP there are two areas in which you can fight bot controlled NPCs.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Heart_of_the_Mists
The fallen halls of Glory contains npcs you can fight of every class. Practice fighting them as they are not walkovers to a newer player.
Forest of Aarden point also has two champs you can fight for an even tougher challenge.
Next is to join a guild that can teach you in game how to control and play your characters. Its not essential but in game critique of your play is extremely beneficial.
Most importantly be patient. It takes time to learn and there is no class or build that can carry a new player in pvp successfully.

Yep i see what youre getting at. Actually i do take phant fury, mustve chosen the pistol cd trait mistakenly in the build link. Admittedly ive only just started playing the build over the last 24 hours in pvp ranked and unranked and use blink decoy and distortion to mitigate damage. Its got some obvious drawbacks as you pointed out so most importantly i try to pick my engagements
Ill give your variant a try and see how it feels. Honestly i only took illusions because i like the lower cd on our class mechanic and yes, i took cele and worked with it as i didnt want to take inspiration.
Hey Chaos, would like your thoughts on my build?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQRAra8cl0nha0YjawMNwsGLnGEZAWQQRHT37SZJWRCA-TphFwAAOCArPBAd2fIxBB4wDAwZZAA
Just to explain. Rather than trying to compare the sw/sw utility to other weapon sets I tried to make use of its strengths. The offhand sword provides a fantastic phantasm as well as a block or piercing daze if triggered. In terms of pvp in group fights it does interrupt closely grouped opponents. It is particularly frustrating to downed opponents and their teammates trying to revive them. Taking power block is a no brainer. And well, since you have power block why not go the whole way and maximise your ability to interrupt. Which is why I took harmonious mantras. MoD is obvious but mantra of recovery, traited is one of the best heals in the game. Over 6k heal on a quick recharge not to mention the damage stacking on triggering mantras.
To compliment sw/sw i took scepter/pistol as again the build plays to the strengths of the weapon sets rather than the other way around. Scepter 2 is again another block which if triggered either by an opponent or yourself will activate blind and confusion. Pistol again provides fantastic single damage dps and magic bullet causes mayhem in groups with its first hit proccing stun/weakness , second hit proccing daze/stun/weakness and third hit proccing blind and confusion.
I know the build seems like its single target focused with its phantasms but the offhand utility of both weapon sets says otherwise, not to mention sword mainhand blurred frenzy and of course the reduced cooldown of shatters and their traited effects.
The primary drawback to the build is its condition cleansing. I only run generosity on a weapon set and thats it which is why I take centaur runes for the permanent swiftness uptime (using mantra heal) and passive cripple reduction + its 100 power. I also take moa mainly for its passive condition reduction though it does help mostly vs eles, necros and engis.
If things get too tough its easy to kite with teleport and decoy which should give you enough time to cycle through your heal as required. Whilst activating mantras, your armor will spike up to 3K also.
Im really quite enjoying this built atm. Wish it were easier to make celestial armor for wvw.
Yep, sword/sword is my new favorite weapon set. I’ve been running my own build in PVP and it has been mega fun to play.
It’s not like people complaining about PU mesmer is new. PU has already received a nerf. And for the record to anyone else frustrated by PU mesmers:-
1. A mesmer in stealth can only attack you via phantasm attack and clone and whatever conditions the clones can apply.
2. Most clones and phantasms are a 1 SHOT kill from an autoattack. ANY autoattack.
3. Clones do negligible physical damage.
4. All clone on death traits have been removed. There is ZERO consequence to killing a clone or a phantasm.
5. If you kill the clones and phantasms, you will mitigate a crap tonne of damage and conditions caused by shattering.
6. You will also nullify any passive clone traits. I.e Ether feast heal is more beneficial with active illusions
Now that’s just a small portion of things to learn when it comes from facing mesmers, but I gaurantee you, you will find an easier time of it if you keep these things in mind.
Newer players…or dare I say it, players whom have simply never learnt how to deal with mesmers will always fare badly if you let a mesmer dictate when a clone or phantasm is used. This is true of any mesmer build.
Stealth is not mesmer thing, and should be removed, but before you go nuts read till the end.
I would remove all mesmer stealths except veil and implement mechanics that would allow mesmers to switch between illusions phantasms and any kind of clones, this way mesmer would actually have to position wisely, stealth is out of place because there is no counter to stealt.
Mesmer does not fit stealth role, it fits illusions, and confusion. People should be confused targeting CORRECT TARGET, not picking one of the targets and have them pick 100% wrong, because mesmer is in stealth.
I wont go into too much detail here as the argument you’ve made is very broad. I have read your entire post as well as the ensuing replies.
I ask this with respect, but who are you to decide what is and what isn’t a mesmer thing?
And by the way, in Guildwars 1, mesmers did not even have clones or phantasms.
To put all this into context for you, I multi class. I really do not have a favored profession as I like to try all sorts of different play styles and builds.
I’m telling you this because there is no single class or build that doesn’t have a counter. Another way to say that is, there is no profession that is dominant against all other classes. Otherwise you would see one class overwhelmingly represented in pvp and wvw. So whilst the class and build you play is useful and perhaps even powerful against other classes, maybe it’s meant to be that you find some mesmers difficult to deal with.
The best advice I can give you is to play mesmer in pvp and learn the class nuances inside out.
Note that I refer to the Mesmer in its entirety. Not just that they can stealth. A mesmer has a few things that count against it. Low HP, light armor and extremely susceptible to condition pressure.
You dismissed as laughable the response of another poster the exact things you need to learn in order to beat a mesmer.
Timing, Positioning, Prediction.
I will add one more. Actually knowing the class from playing it.
If you had come in here and actually asked us how to beat a PU mesmer you’d be well on your way to wrecking some of them already.
Because at the end of the day, you can make all the noise you want about stealth on a mesmer, it will not change a thing.
The question you should ask yourself is, what are you actually going to do about it?
Just takes practice bro. Either you do a quick de target and mouse look behind you or press the about face key quickly followed by hornets sting. But an easy way to trigger a getaway is to simply target whom you’re trying to get away from. It will always launch you the opposite direction of your target. After the initial jump de target and continue on your way.
I multiclass, though I do enjoy playing my hammer/gs warrior. Great change. Fantastic change.
I multi class but am really enjoying playing ranger in wvw and pvp.
I think a lot of rangers look at other classes and immediately think “what about me” rather than actually looking at some of the good stuff rangers received.
What about pets? Pets received a huge buff. But it barely gets a mention here?
Opening Strike + Remoreseless? FORGET it. This is worth playing the class alone.
The build i play uses Beastmastery, Marksmanship and Wilderness Survival.
The Ranger got a massive buff as far as i’m concerned. Yes, i’ve been bursted like many other people here, but I can wreck other players just as easily.
Remove all amulets. Revert to full customisation pve/wvw exotic level armor and weapons for pvp.
I’m really liking this trait though still learning to use it at the proper time. (i.e when my pet is close enough).
This got me thinking about ranged pets. Is the skill completely useless on a spider for example whom will not be close enough (or you’ll have to kite your enemy within close range of your pet)
Would a viable alternative be proc taunt on F2 skill hit. For example a juvenile forest spider will need to hit its f2 skill poison first and then it will automatically trigger taunt pulling agro.
Thoughts?
I’ve been playing a lot of melee ranger GS + Sword/Axe in pvp and wvw prepatch and would have issues trying to crit (low precision for my build) so I would take sigil of intel on my GS. Im thinking i dont need it anymore. Opening strike is perfect if not OP at the moment with reapplication on fury.
I am late to playing ranger but am really enjoying the class, however having come from learning most of the other classes first (bar theif) I can say that Opening Strike and Remorseless with the associated minors are right where they should be. To condense them (and perhaps add in a differing minor trait would make it too op. And I say again, currently the investment allows you to actually not have to balance your build for precision. This is a very powerful advantage to have.
You could just….you know…not follow a bad commander.
Also just to drive it home further.
Attunement recharge dropped to 10 seconds. Thats a fire aura every 10 seconds when we swap into fire with the automatic minor sunspot trait.
-Sunspot – Inflict damage at your location when you attune to fire and gain a fire aura (10 second attunement recharge cd)
-Soothing Ice – Gain regeneration & Frost Aura when critically hit (20 second CD)
+ signet cooldown times are increased.
So ty Anet -1build. Gj.
Untraited Signet of Earth and Air sit at 25 seconds. Signet of Fire 20 seconds in the new patch.
Exactly the same as previous so no, the cool down times are not increased.
Signet CD reduction can be found with Written in stone GM trait in Earth line. And I dont know anyone running a signet build who doesn’t take Written in stone.
Signets are still useful. Who knew.
You dudes aint creative eh. I know you all really just want the auras to trigger elemental shielding and if you actually try you can find ways to trigger it. Frost aura on crtical hit in the water line? Also we have an automatic fire aura in the fire line when we swap to fire attunement(sunspot minor trait). Not to mention weapon skills that can trigger auras and lastly theres also a runeset that grants auras. Maybe just maybe anet thought the fire aura on signet use was too easy? Particularly since we now get two extra trait points in every line.
Seems like a simple solution. I’d happily pay $50 for expansion +1 slot as a vet. A new player gets great value by getting the base + HoT and has 5 empty slots to work with. But let me choose!
Simplest and best solution. #Winning
This is worrying. We have a reliable method to get spirit shards (skill points) via leveling which is now being taken away to be replaced with RNG…
I hope that’s not the case because the same new players will also have to deal with their own armor/trinket/weapon choices in PVE and WVW anyway.
Hello, just my thoughts on the game mode and some suggestions which I think can improve it.
Firstly i’ve been playing guildwars 2 since launch, stopped playing for about 6 months then got back into it when I joined a WVW guild. Also played GW1 (not that that matters). Most of my time has been spent in WVW with my guildies and its been a blast. I went to PVP sparingly to practice different builds and professions before running them in WVW.
Now however i spend most of my time in PVP and have finally broken rank 40 and continually try different builds over all the professions. This keeps it fresh even though its the continuous rotation of maps. I have zero issues with matchups and rankings and all that stuff. Win some lose some. That’s the way it goes, whether you have someone who leaves that match early, or you faceoff against a pre made team. (I usually play unranked)
If im on the end of what’s looking like a bad loss because of poor teamplay or team imbalance or whatever I at least try to get a couple of fights in.
(Maybe just maybe re-introducing solo queue would be a good thing though it doesn’t worry me too much).
I would however like more options when it comes to my stat spread. Im sorry if this question has been posed before but, i’d like to know why the PVP panel for trait and armor setup does not mirror our pve/wvw panel for options?
I guess the question is, what would be the issue with having the exact same customisation for PVP that we have in PVE/WVW?
I think it would allow for more build diversity if anything wouldnt it?
slotting 3 signets never made sense to me. as a general rule, when I see a ranger with 3 signets, I know hes a bad (or new player). so don’t do it.
Disagree.
I run 3 signets in a melee ranger build like so in pvp:-
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAR8XjEq0waBLWsQ1aA/gaZDEAt7hYoGYGB9bJLaI-TpBFABDt/gDHEAEeAASXGYhjAAAXAAA
This build was first introduced to me by Potato on Twitch.
I swap signet of stone for lightning reflexes in WVW.
The build works. Does a crap tonne of damage, has a lot of sustain and with Emphatic Bond, condis usually aren’t an issue.
Here’s the same build in action in WVW by potato himself. His other video’s explain the build.
I gotta say, after playing ranger heavily the past few days in PVP (my main classes are engi/ele/mes) I find little fault with pets. They attack when i want them too, reliably trigger their skills and most of the time are right by my side (minor pathing issues aside). And ive been testing most of the pets too paying attention to their skills and timing their use at the most opportune time.
