The only problem with this is that the Symbol of Wrath change was sold as a change to Retaliation, presumably for PVP reasons (though that was never explicitly stated). The fact that it impacted PVE AOE damage output was readily apparent to anyone who played a Guardian. In the end that is apparently exactly what it was (cause else they could have changed it for PVP only as they just proved) whoever wrote the patch notes or whoever informed them just didn’t have the stones to admit it or was plain uninformed about both the game and this change.

Which is kinda sad no matter which way you turn it.

ANet didn’t lie, cheat or steal. Anyone who bets on getting something particular from a grab bag is just betting very bad odds. I will generally say that I believe adding stuff to BL Chests exclusively is a terrible idea. Everything else worthwhile you can get via those chests you can also buy directly if at possibly increased cost. However if Skins had been the same they would have had to make them untradeable or run the risk of creating a speculator’s market with people buying skins in bulk and flogging them for a fortune this summer.

In a way, it’s a fair solution. Not the only one, but a fair one.

Otherwise I generally agree with the OP. I work 50, 60 hour weeks at times, but I understand that nothing worth having is ever easily gained. Sure, they could have given everyone a token redeemable for one of the skins. Then everyone would have run around with chainsaw swords for a few weeks. And they’d have vanished when the next cool new thing rolled around. By keeping them rare you keep them special.

I do feel bad for those people who really want one but can’t or won’t gamble on one nor buy one off the TP. But I figure if they really want that skin, they’ll find a way to get it. If not, well, then I guess they didn’t want it after all.

It’s that simple. If everyone had everything, nothing and nobody would be special anymore. Which is why communism is so unappealing to a lot of westerners even though it’s the most humane system conceivable on paper. Not that it can actually work but that is another topic.

This is a Costume Brawl related post. And not really all that serious cause well, Costume Brawl isn’t. But using an Eagle Raptor Tonic you’re actually able to become King of the Brawl or whatever it’s called in no time. Eagle Raptors get a cone Scream that ticks twice over its duration. Aim at a group of brawlers, scream away, maneuver around, scream again, bam.

Again, Costume Brawl is a silly affair. I’m just wondering if it should be that easy. (For myself I can obviously ‘fix’ the issue by not going Eagle Raptor again, more wondering about the overall idea of how it should be here.)

Really, ANet?

I realize that as a RPer, I’m an utter minority. But what about adding more town clothes options that actually fit the setting and are not intended to make a character look like a kitten kitten?

Right now all characters of a given race and gender only have the one basic set of town clothes. Dyes aside. it looks very dull to sit in a group of -say- Norn in town clothes. I’ve been looking forward to decent alternatives. But all we get is kitten.

Why even bother to make a fantasy game set in a largely quasi-medieval world only to introduce items aimed at breaking immersion? Also see: Norn, Human, Asura dances.

(Okay, I can kind of see the aviator stuff for the rare Charr or Asura but kitten bunny ears? Devil horns in a world that lacks a Christian faith and hence our earthly concept of the devil? Never mind the freebie baseball hat handed out during launch or the kitten cook look.)

Hallowed Ground - Float/Sink ?

Sanctuary creates a dome, a bubble unterwater. Hallowed Ground is a flat plane affecting those who stand on it. It would be created on the floor of the body of water you’re in, making it rather useless. This is a technical limitation of all skills that create flat areas.

IMO rezzing any downed player in your vicinity is smart play. Downed rally pretty fast unless they’re being focussed and having another body in the fight is always useful. Conversely, people who are actually dead should get their carcasses to the next WP. Really hate it when people do that.

So in that sense, rezzing downed people is never a bad thing.

As for the rest, this is clearly a L2P issue. If they won’t learn, you don’t have to play with them.

All tried and true Traits, but one consideration: You use Altruistic Healing but have very few ways of triggering it. Not even sure if Virtue of Justice without Inspired Virtue will trigger it, since the ‘Burn on next hit’ effect is not technically a Boon. That leaves you with Symbol of Wrath and Virtue of Courage as triggers, which is very very little. You might do better with Monk’s Focus.

It’s a Ranger. Even if he’s in full MF gear he still has Power and Precision or Condition Damage. Which is to say his raw DPS should have been fine. Unless he was primarily tanking or supporting or dying all the time this is one example where MF gear should not actually detract from someone’s contribution.

Then again, seeing the amount of Dungeon Bosses that can one-shot the unwary or inattentive, dying a lot might have been just him being stupid. Which no inspect feature will warn you from.

An inspect feature does however seem very efficient at uncovering elitist kittens.

Events should be soloable if there is nobody else around, more and more people are getting to level 80 and less and less people do the events on lower levels :/ I know many events that do scale down if you are alone, but all of the bossfights/random bosses are always either 1shotting you or it would take half a hour to solo it. Also its so annoying that the leveling is so relied on events, but wth, i cant level if nobody is helping on events?

A lot of events are soloable already. Most of the ones you couldn’t handle solo have [Group Event] attached to their names. And even then, some are soloable.

-better dungeon design….I havent done all of the dungeons, but in CoF, the point where we have to defend tha asura putting the bomb in, with good group it aint too big deathrace…but if you are doing it with 1st timers, its just plain kitten Who in the name of god wants to do a dungeon where you have to suicide to mobs just to keep the main NPC alive?? (other than that i do like the dungeon strategies and techniques made into them^^)

The key to a successful Dungeon run is communication. If you have first timers with you, explain to them what they have to do in a clear manner. I’ve been glad to get to learn from people who’ve been there before, and I’ve been happy to explain the ropes to first timers and it benefitted everyone.

-Same base stats for all classes, im not sure would this unbalance everything, but i just dont understand why my necro has better base vitality than guardian?

Fully agreed. I’d love for my Guardian to be immortal. More seriously, it’s basically a game design limitation. Guardians can be specced for insane uptimes of Regeneration and Protection, and to heal themselves every time they sneeze. While it feels stupid that they should have Thief level HP when they’re a pretty meaty class, it’s fine in gameplay.

-Balance the race heights….I understand its meant that norn are longer but my god not twice as long as the shortest human

While we Norn are certainly longer than puny humans, we are also far far taller. Norn are supposed to be gigantic. Charr are actually only slightly smaller, but they have a bit of a stooped posture. Asura are supposed to be short. Sylvari and Humans are average. What’s wrong with their being actual size differences differentiating the various races?

Got no opinion or input on the rest.

Best Weapons/Traits for survivability?

in Guardian

Posted by: Schakal.6091

Schakal.6091

Independent of weapon:

1) Meditation Build. Gotten through the Valor Trait line. Meditation Mastery; Focussed Mind; Monk’s Focus. Skill loadout varies. Your Meditation Skills recharge faster, cast instantly and heal you every time you use one. And they heal for a lot. Judge’s Intervention and Smite Condition are probably the most practical Skills to go with this, but despite the longer cooldowns the other two have their place.

2) Altruistic Healing Build. Another top tier Valor Trait. You’re healed every time you buff someone. You want to combine this with a ready source of Boons, obviously. Shouts work, Renewed Justice with Inspired Virtues works, but my favourite combination includes Empowering Might.

Both of these require a solid investment in Healing Power to be at their most efficient.

For Mace/Shield in particular, you may want to dip deep into Honor and pick up Writ of Persistence at the very least. This will extend Symbol of Faith’s Regeneration by another 2s, meaning you almost always have the Regeneration Boon (enough Boon Duration, Runes of Dwayna or simply mixing in “Hold the Line” and/or “Save Yourselves” will get you to permanence). On top of that you could pick up Writ of the Merciful to get additional healing from that same Symbol. If you really want to go all out you can throw in one of the two methods mentioned above. Should you go with Altruistic Healing, you’ll get healed for everyone who gains the Boon from your Symbol on top of all other sources.

But that might be overkill.

Is there a "everyone goes X route" trait line for initial leveling ?

in Guardian

Posted by: Schakal.6091

Schakal.6091

Well, Zeal has a place. Well, 10 points have a place.

If you’re looking to level mostly via World PVE, the 15 Radiance/5 Virtues setup (which is really IMO the best, see below) does well being supplemented by 10 points in Zeal and Fiery Wrath. With VoJ Spam you’re looking at a lot of Burning to take advantage of, and depending on your playstyle you can supplement that with Judge’s Intervention and Purging Flames for more Burn sources. In that way, the 10% vs. Burning enemies easily come out to a global 6% or more, regardless of weapon loadout.

However, unless you’re running with other Guardians or Elementalists, I feel the effect is far less pronounced if you plan on levelling primarily via Dungeons. Tougher opponents means less enemies dying quickly and thus less VoJ Spam which means less Burning from that source.

Still, it’s possibly the most worthwhile pick in the entire Zeal line, and only a 10 point investment.

The rest is pretty much a matter of personal choice. There are several established and highly functional Guardian builds and the class is balanced enough that you won’t kitten yourself if you throw 30 points in a single Trait line. While some tiers in some lines have some real stinkers there are also a lot of obvious synergies. Shout builds, Meditation builds, Symbol builds, Spirit Weapon builds, Consecration builds are all pretty straightforward affairs if you look over the Traits. And most will leave you with some wiggle room.

Now, back to the 15 Radiance/5 Virtues setup you’ve seen recommended before. Quite simply, I feel it breeds good habits. Managing your Virtues is part and parcel to being an effective Guardian. Virtue of Justice is a good one to practice. Making it both readily available via Renewed Justice and boosting its efficiency through the roof via Inspired Virtues easily allows you to work on your timing and see the effects in action. It doesn’t do as much for the other Virtues, but I see a lot of Guardians who never use their active Virtues at all.

Which is as much of a mistake as spamming them as soon as they come off cooldown.

Not only is the setup wickedly efficient with its Burn and Might spam (for you and your entire party or otherwise whoever just happens to be near you during an Event), it’s educational. Perfect set of training wheels.

(And a total sidenote: A Warrior who goes for a 5 Sigil Crit build might be doing the popular thing but fails at basic math. “For Great Justice” is a better boost to DPS than both Signet of Might and Signet of Fury, including the loss of 40 Precision for not having a Signet in that slot. So much for popular builds.)

“Guardians are devoted fighters who protect their allies and smite their enemies by drawing from the power of their virtues. True guardians are brilliant tacticians and selfless defenders who know when to sacrifice their own defenses to empower their allies to achieve victory.”

Doesn’t say anything about righteousness. None of the classes really outright suggest a firm philosophy going with them. As the name implies, the Guardian is about taking care of other people. That’s very much an Order of Whispers thing. Though admittedly, when they ask you to ‘take care’ of someone that might mean several things.

Why would every character need access to all dyes? In practice I use maybe a dozen different dyes per character. The fact they tend to have more than that stems from the fact some dyes better represent what I wanted, but were unavailable at the time. Also, the OP is confusing. They love collecting dyes but the lack of an achievement for doing so partially stops them from continuing. Some big love.

Granted, he’s wearing armor underneath but it’s not like you can tell at first glance, aside from the helmet. Never mind that the game already contains armors that actually offer no protection to vital areas of the body. Wearing a robe instead would offer more protection.

Yes, it’s a fantasy game, but there is such a thing as fantastic realism. Assuming a warrior wears armor to protect themselves and assuming their species’ heart is still situated in their chest, it makes no sense that a suit if armor would protect the shoulder or belly but not the chest.

Guardians leveling, i see you, i want to be you

in Guardian

Wreknar.5076

First and foremost, get 15 points into Radiance. While leveling, having your VoJ AOE blind and reset on any kill is a huge perk. While it is a DPS tree, the perks are just too good to pass up. Once there you can go wherever you want in your build and even into a reset at 80.

This. Add in 5 points in Virtue so that VoJ also gives you and everyone around you Might and let the fun begin. If there is a cookie cutter way to spec a Guardian, this 20 point investment is probably it.

The rest is most likely more dependent on your playstyle and the weapons and skills you use right now. In my experience, everyone hits a slump around level 20-30. Enemies ramp up a bit faster than your own stats and abilities, but by 40 at the latest you’ll be in the lead and never lose it again. This is coming from someone who played his way to 80 in level 50 gear.

As for playstyle. Well, that utterly depends on you. It’s easier to tailor your character to your wants and needs within certain boundaries than make you play in a way you don’t enjoy to meet imaginary standards. Personally, I’ve really only used three weapon loadouts levelling up: Greatsword, Hammer and Sword/Torch; Staff for Dungeons, but that’s Dungeons.

I’ve stuck with Greatsword because well, while I don’t care for the spinning, it allows me to group up several spawns and AOE them down quickly and efficiently. If you’re going after single opponents, Sword/Torch is IMO more efficient, and Hammer is good in both situations but more importantly an easy to use defensive option.

Same thing goes for Skills. In the end it’s up to you what works and what doesn’t. For Greatsword and Hammer play I found Purging Flames indispensable. It purges a Condition, ticks 5s of Burn and enables Fire Combos. That’s Bolts and a Shield for GS, AOE Might for Hammer. Other people prefer to use Shouts or Signets. If you already invest in Radiance, getting Signet Mastery and going that way for levelling is certainly not wrong. But it’s not an ideal teaming build.

Never ending Botting

Schakal.6091

A game like Quake had a locally administered game server hosting small groups of players. A /kick command that required half of the players present to agree or something like that was easy to implement because you were dealing with a controllable population in a small environment. If someone was wallhacking or aimbotting you could usually tell pretty easily. In the case of fully private servers, being able to kick was often as easy as being friends with an admin.

An MMO is a completely different environment. If I find a bot, chances are not everyone’s seen it. A /kick command that would require voting would require a lot of good faith or for other people in the zone to come around and check. Giving ‘trustworthy’ players the ability to do so is even more of an issue. Technically speaking, nobody around here knows anyone else. You people just live inside my computer screen.

In both events, I’m not sure if the risks outweigh the possible benefits.

Mind you, I can fully understand your frustration. Utterly. Remember that some less sophisticated bots can be tricked with Fireworks bundles. Report. Train monsters on them. It helps me a bit.

I’ve done that. Also the reverse. There’s inevitably that situation where a couple people try to run into a Tower that’s under siege. Schakal.6091

44% Crit Chance sounds about right. Very roughly speaking, every 21 points of Precision over 916 equal 1% Crit Chance. Technically, with your 5% Sigil your effective Crit Chance is 49% but the game won’t display that. What Runes are you using? That’s about the last area you could squeeze something out of without any radical changes.

If you could adjust your build to drop another 50 or 100 points in Radiance that would of course do it. Quite honestly, I’m not sure what you want with Defender’s Flame when the only Block you have is the occasional Aegis from Virtue of Courage. If you decided to drop more points in Radiance, I think Toughness would be the line to cannibalize. Shame your weapon loadout can’t take advantage of Right Hand Strength. It’s the Trait for anyone who wants to go for a Crit-based build.

Transmuting from one class of armor to another

You’re confusing game design with lore.

Thieves are adept at the art of stealth. They utilize surprise and shadow to get close to their enemies, and they’re deadly in one-on-one combat. They have an affinity for setting traps and going where they were never meant to go.

That is what a thief is. Now, for someone trying to be stealthy it would probably make no sense to run around in a kittening and chattering suit of chainmail. Or even bulkier armor. But I don’t see anything wrong with someone being stealthy and lethal in cloth armor.

The fact that they actually wear medium armor is a game design limitation. One that wouldn’t change since the stats would be unaffected.

If this was allowed you would have Eles running around in heavy armor and guardians running around in light armor in PvP causing all kinds of issues .Given i dont PvP much but even i know that proper target identification is pivotal in the chaos of combat .

Well, in sPVP it wouldn’t be an issue since it uses a different armor paradigm. In WvW it’s only relevant when you can actually SEE who you’re fighting to begin with and don’t have the split second to check out the little icon that appears next to their name.

I personally loathe the fact that my studly meleeing Mesmer is stuck wearing kitten dresses. Even the most basic Medium Armor looks more appropriate to the character concept.

While I’d settle for some skins or new armor models that shook up the foundations by, I think opening the various classes of armor for cross-Transmutation would be the more efficient way to go. Transmutation Stones exist to allow us to customize our style after all. And the game lore is loose enough to allow for interpretations of the classes that at least visually call for other types of armor than they are allowed by the systems.

The Mesmer is -among other things- described as a Duelist. Well, a Duelist wouldn’t wear awkward robes that get in the way. Guardians have a spiritual element; seeing them in robes would seem natural. Thieves and Egineers are regular people without an actual need for armor at the end of the day. Seeing them in something lighter than trenchcoats would seem perfectly natural. And so on.

Fully agreed on Stand Your Ground, Signet of Judgement (especially in Altruistic Healing builds) and especially Purging Flames. Purging Flames was the first Skill that became a mainstay of my loadout and it just stuck around even as my Traits evolved.

Beyond that, I still use…

Sanctuary

Even if Dungeon Bosses walkittenerally all over it, they still take Interrupts. For weaker foes, I never tire of sitting in my Sanctuary and using Binding Blade’s Pull as a ghetto CC by pulling enemies against the dome. Breathing room for embattled allies, area denial, a barrier to drop against ranged attacks. It’s not necessarily all powerful but another extremely flexible Skill.

Hallowed Ground

Not as flashy or offensive as its little brother, Purging Flames, but for one it’s the other Fire Combo Field we have, secondly it lasts a good bit longer than Purging Flames and thirdly it’s another source of Stability. It’s like having the best of both Purging Flames and Stand Your Ground rolled into one. Same as above (and all the Consecrations). Not all powerful but really flexible.

NCSoft has done all of the above as well. It just seems that ArenaNet is very successful in getting NCSoft to let them do their own thing. Which is quite laudable.

Are you including the ‘talking heads’ style conversation cutscenes? Cause I do like the look and feel of those. Even if the writing absolutely does not take into account that my character has a personality other than being a willing instrument to every stranger and the voice acting is a very mixed bag. These could still do with some major love.

But if you’re just talking about the ‘action’ cutscenes like the one you describe? Gods, yes, we can do without those. They felt terribly static and oddly rough considering how beautiful most of the game looks. Like when strategy games do cutscenes by zooming in on their in game graphics.

Equip a ranged weapon. Spam AOEs. Even Guardians can do that via Staff, and everyone else has solid ranged options anyway.

Its not greed. Want to see greed? Look at companies like EA, Bioware, and Blizzard.

This. I almost choked when I learned that The Secret World charges a monthly subscription and a tenner per set of clothing that actually looks good on top of that. Compared to that, GW2 is paradise, even if NCSoft is still as evil of a corporation as, well, any corporation anywhere, ever.

Any program/code that does not work as intended is classified as a Virus.

Really? Why do most computer viruses work exactly as their programmer intended? Isn’t that a bit paradoxical? I think you misunderstood an old joke about Windows there.

Oh and 10$ for 300 Gems is insane. Hey folks want more space in your bank pay 20$ worth of Gems~….

It’s 800 Gems for 10 USD/EUR. Get your kitten facts straight at least.

As for your actual problem… I’m a European playing on a US server without noticeable lag of any kind 95% of the time. So maybe it’s just you.

What kind of system do you have and what settings are you running the game at? What other software are you running concurrently with GW2? What’s your internet connection like? Are other people sharing your connection?

Not so say you don’t have a legal problem there. But it wouldn’t be the first time someone has problems like that cause they run the game at max settings while playing it on a 386 with a Hercules card, watching a Blu Ray movie on the same computer and running peer to peer software without bandwidth limits. Okay, maybe not like that but you get the idea.

Use Transmutation stones to Jewerly

More options are always better. However, the Transmutation Stones are intended to allow you to compare an outward look of an item, not the icon in your inventory/on your character sheet. Using a Transmutation Stone as they currently exist on your Jewelry might not allow you to get the icon you’re looking for. So the system would probably have to be changed at a very fundamental level to consider icons as well. Honestly not sure if that would be worth the effort.

Solution: Put the stuff you can’t sell at a store anyway in the rest of the invisible slots. Gathering tools, foods, dungeon tokens etc. And put the invisible bag at the bottom. It’s not like the slots are wasted; it’s only relevant when you’re full up to the brim and trying to sell something in an invisible slot.

My guess is there’s simply no Dev who cares.

After that patch went live, Rangers complained about the slowdown on Shortbow and got a Dev response inside of minutes. We’ve raged, we’ve mulled over the issue, we’ve come up with better fixes for the issue… nothing.

The alternative consideration is they plain don’t know how to actually justify the change seeing as it flies in the face of their stated goals.
