The diference of GW2’s stealth vs any other decent games is others games mechanics has detections and counter stealth.

GW2 just has a perma spameable invisibility.

As well as dodge/cc mechanics that counters stealth. As well as non targeted attacks that can hit stealthed targets – other games with conventional stealth do not have that (besides very few untargeted aoe abilities). As well as insane power creep and low passive defences of stealth classes compared to most other games, what enables ppl simply kill stealthed targets in a matter of seconds.

No. Just, no. Wildly swinging melee weapons is not a counter. Get real. And many classes have very limited access to aoe and non-targeted attacks.

A well played thief (and lets be honest, it is not hard to play a thief), with full stacks of everything (borderlands bloodlust, sigil bloodlust X25, Applied Strength, Applied Fortitude), consumables, and ascended gear really can’t be defeated in wvw. Multiple well played thieves easily wipe twice their numbers and they can do it really, really quickly.

The results will look something like this:
1)2.5K steal
2)5.5k c&d
3)8k backstab
[…] a couple auto attacks for 500 each
4)10k Heartseeker
DEAD x_x

The combination of shadow stepping, stealth, high evasion, extremely high spike damage, and no cooldowns due to the initiative system results in a very, very broken class.

The reason why its not a problem that is not balanced is because WvW isnt one on one PvP its as the name itself implies WvW… if a player dies in combat (at least prior to the blood lust thing) it had 0 impact on win/loose.

Besides no matter what Arenanet do WvW can never be balanced because there is no way to balance stuff on a huge map with 500vs500vs500 battles.

Everyone is split up so if you’re 50 people assaulting a keep with 20 people and a zerg of 150 people from the other server shows up how can such a battle ever be balanced? Same with Siege weapons, an arrow cart does order of magnitude more damage then most classes could ever hope for and it does that at a greater distance and affects more players then player skills do. But all of that is okey because ultimately its not about individual fights its about a big picture. So going back to my 50vs20vs150 keep scenario in all likeliness the 150 strong server will destroy the 50 or so weakened invader and then overcome whats remaining of the 20 or so defense force… thats not a problem because 20 or so defense force has another 480 players elsewhere taking other objectives. If they’re wise they’ll use their superior numbers to strike at the server that just took a keep from them while they’re defense force is more fractured.

Simple speaking WvW is not about 1vs1, its a big long term strategic war between servers.

Thank you for that patronizing reply. I play on Anvil Rock. I understand imbalance just fine, thank you. And I have remained loyal to my server.

Fact: Wvw is poorly balanced. Fact: Wvw could be more balanced. The problem is that Anet appears to have given up on making it so. This new ascended gear along with a number of recent additions (perplexity runes) have made wvw players very frustrated.

At its root, again, the problem is that people simply WILL NOT play a competitive game, long-term, if the game designers refuse to fix blatant imbalances. An increasingly imbalanced pvp game is not fun or rewarding. If your contributions in wvw are increasingly negated by intrusive and frustrating game mechanics, why would you bother to play?

I, for one, know that my server, Anvil Rock, has little or no chance of winning from week to week since we sank to the bottom of the wvw rankings. As such, the fights are the only thing keeping me going. Now, with ascended gear, kitten -poor class balance, the bloodlust buff, and badly designed WXP upgrades, wvw is becoming a joke. Skill matters less and less. When skill is not rewarded, pvp players leave.

It is true that wvw will never be completely balanced due to the fact that it is linked to pve-land. The problem is that every recent update to the game has exacerbated the imbalance, and upcoming updates appear to be even worse offenders. It is an unpleasant trend. If it continues, wvw will be a ghost town within a few months.

All of WvWvW is imbalanced, and adding more more thing in the list of many things that imbalance WvWvW is not going to matter.

facepalm You know what? You’re right. Wvw is all about zerging in a giant karma train and mindlessly following a blue dorito around, right? Why do I even bother…

WvW is the only game mode where people have a valid theoretical point. However:

  • Anet said from the get go that WvW would not be balanced
  • People who like to play WvW tend to play…WvW. That means, at the moment, the majority are not swimming in ascended gear
  • WvW is mostly about large-group tactics. You should be more concerned with a people having a group consumable buff than a few people with fewer ascended items.

Why do people keep buying into this bs? If a competitive mode is not meant to be balanced, there is absolutely no reason to play it. The simple fact of the matter is that Anet is clueless when it comes to wvw. They don’t know what to do, so they have decided to just give up. This whole ‘it was never meant to be balanced’ thing is just Anet hand-waving the problem away.

Anet doesn’t seem to realize that there are many, many players like me who will be giving up on the game soon because wvw was the only thing keeping us here. Wvw is GW2’s only end-game content worth playing. And wvw is dying rapidly; Ascended gear, poor class balance, massive server population differences, zerging, skill lag, the bloodlust buff, and the upcoming wvw leagues are going to kill it.

Don’t act like Anet’s stance on wvw balance makes sense, please.

A pet is a ranger’s companion. The pet is a part of the ranger. We need more control of what he can and what he can’t do. Some dungeons mechanics in this game are just cruel for the ranger’s pet.

The pet must be able to learn about the mobs mechanics and adapt to them in order to survive. The only choices a ranger has (guard and attack) are like “don’t do anything” and “try to do something”.

+ for new pet UI and AI.

The problem is that pet AI issues will NEVER be fixed. Anet is not going to design an entirely new AI system just for Ranger pets. That is why so many Rangers are asking for pet damage to be nerfed into the ground so that Ranger damage can be increased.

I see it as the only viable solution. Turn the Ranger pet into an annoying, mobile tank with utility skills but little to no damage.

Here is a little secret. You get tons of them from WvW. Just follow the zerg and take keeps. Make sure you hit the champion keep lord for credit.

I get tons of Empyreal Fragments from wvw, but Dragonite Ore? No.
Then again, I am on Anvil Rock (ranked last in wvw) and we don’t take keeps as often as other servers. Still, there are much more efficient methods of getting Dragonite Ore.

Sentry.3691

The best way to get all of those fragments is dungeons. Each dungeon gives 20 Empyreal Fragments. That means all the ascended weapons require 125 dungeon runs. Assuming each dungeon run takes 15 minutes, that’s 31.5 hours of gameplay just for Empyreal Fragments.

The best way to get Empyreal Fragments is wvw, not dungeons. They are ridiculously easy to get just by capturing camps and towers.

For me, Dragonite Ore is much more difficult to get because I don’t enjoy mindlessly farming temple events and world bosses.

Plus, 3 seconds of stealth? I can drop aggro from a mob, sure, but it won’t trick another human. 3 seconds of stealth does nothing for a ranger – we have no teleport like mesmers and thieves – we will become visible pretty darn close to where we first went invisible. Any idiot with an AoE or Greatsword can spam where we went invisible and rip us a new one. Plus, if the pet attacks during your invisibility, you become visible again. The stealth does NOT affect our pets either – they remain visible. Stealth is pointless for rangers in WvW.

Turn off Autotargeting. Target nearby enemy. Use Hunter’s Shot and switch to greatsword. Use swoop to close the gap or drop target and use it to escape. Profit.

Yes, the skill would be more useful if rangers had more gap closing/escape skills, but that is yet another general ranger class issue that needs to be addressed at some point.

Sentry.3691

I pray for the day the Heavenly Father blesses Rangers with the ability to go without a pet. I hope and I pray that one day Anet turns an about face and allows us to perma-stow our pet and give the Ranger that 30-40% damage back.

Anet’s current stance is that we are suppose to play the way they want and that is with a pet anytime you are in combat. Of course, you can play with pet on passive but then you are missing that DPS the pet is supposed to provide, artificially handicapping yourself and F2 abilities.

^This. I wish that the pet was just a secondary skill bar and did little or no damage. As it is, the stupid pet makes this class almost impossible to balance.

Everyone is clueless when it comes to why people are upset about longbow. IT’S BECAUSE PvE POWER RANGERS AND WvW RANGERS HAVE TO SHARE THE SAME BOW, AND WANT DIFFERENT THINGS OUT OF IT.

Stop shouting please. Everyone understands why you are upset. You thought that the longbow needed different changes than what it got. I certainly never expected to have stealth suddenly thrown into my lap, but I couldn’t be happier.

The simple fact of the matter is that the change to longbow is very minor. PVE players just seem to be complaining because they have to change their skill rotation.

Yes, the longbow still needs a damage buff, and I wish Rapid Fire had simply been removed as a skill and replaced by something like the Sniper Shot from the Snowball Mayhem minigame. It could still happen. (Honestly, I wish the ranger class played more like the scout class in that mini-game. The devs now seem to be moving in this direction and I love it.)

The Ranger trait lines need a ton of work still as well. Too many hugely useful longbow skills are crammed into the Marksmanship trait line; they need to be merged or moved elsewhere.

I have also never understood the overall design of the Skirmishing trait line. It is all over the place. Why are trap traits there at all when the trait line provides no bonus to condition damage? They should be in Wilderness Survival. And why is the sword and great sword trait in Wilderness Survival instead of Skirmishing? It doesn’t make any sense.

I personally don’t like the idea of switching between different modes, which is what you do with the weapon switch. I never got to terms with Druids in WoW for that reason, mode switching isn’t for everyone!

Except, in GW2, it really is for everyone. Every class plays like a Druid, since every class requires you to constantly change “form” if you’re going to get the most out of them.

I don’t like that style of play, and so I don’t change weapons much, no matter what Arenanet thinks about it. Which unfortunately makes the game play even more lacking in complexity than it already is.

It’s actually pretty sad that Arenanet didn’t just pick the standard MMO model with tons of abilities on quick bars that you manage yourself. There are so many things that are awesome about this game, but the thing you do 99 % of the time (killing stuff) is far less interesting than it could have been.

I don’t get it. Instead of adapting to the game mechanics, you are just going to play the game as if it is another game? I hope that you never wander into wvw, because you have to be extremely active with your ranger in order to survive and thrive.

The only people who seem to appreciate the Ranger improvements made in the new patch are those who play wvw. Do you know why? Because it requires the player to react to a lot of rapidly changing combat situations that you will simply never find in pve or even spvp. And stealth is godly.

In wvw, a ranger that sits in the back of the crowd with a single weapon dies very quickly, especially if they don’t know how to dodge.

I think that too many new rangers are a little overly dependent on bows.

Try playing with the sword and greatsword. The sword is a very fun weapon, though it is rather difficult to master. It has high damage output and it can be paired nicely with all of our off hand weapons.

The greatsword is a fantastic overall weapon. In wvw, it works great as a swap-out weapon due to the swoop skill which is perfect for gap closing and escaping. Now that we can stealth ourselves with the long bow, swoop is even better than ever. Counterattack and hilt bash are also extremely useful.

In my experience, bows are best paired with a melee weapon. Melee weapons can cleave, and our melee weapons have built in evades.

Try experimenting a bit more with other ranger weapons before giving up on the class.

Also hello to the two guys who just tried for AR Keep while I was AFK responding to this post… again sorry about your luck. You can’t even pull it off while we defend SM or are fighting the grub. Keep trying however.. I find it kind of cute.

Your server really isn’t making a very good first impression. I didn’t mind getting thrashed by GoM because they seemed like decent people. They spawn camped us a bit, but that happens in eb.

You guys, on the on the other hand, win purely because you outnumber us at least 3 to 1 on every map. You spawn camp us continually. Your players are generally cowardly, unorganized, and lacking in skill. And you brag as though you have achieved something. I honestly can’t wait until you guys start fighting a few higher ranked servers because you need a good dose of humility.

AR has basically melted down in wvw. 75% or more of our hardcore wvw players have moved elsewhere. Beating us is nothing to be proud of at the moment.

Ranger shortbow gets a 14% damage BUFF and so people jump ship and toss their shortbows out the window…

so basically the legendary is worthless now because SB got a buff on ranger and only a range change on Thief…?

Before you make ignorant comments like this, take the time to actually read the patch notes and understand them. That way you won’t embarrass yourselves.

This is what happened to the Ranger shortbow:
Crossfire: Decreased the range to 900.
Poison Volley: Decreased the range to 900.
Quick Shot: Decreased the range to 900. Increased the damage by 14%.
Crippling Shot: Decreased the range to 900. Increased the damage by 14%.
Concussion Shot: Decreased the range to 900. Increased the damage by 14%. Reduced the aftercast by .25 seconds.

Three utility skills that no one in their right mind would use for damage dealing received a slight buff, and the weapon range was reduced from 1200 to 900. That amounts to a significant nerf.

As for the OP. Sorry, but spending vast amounts of time acquiring a legendary weapons is a risk. Nerfs happen. For this and many other reasons, I’ve never considered them to be worth the effort.

Sadly, people don’t want the truth to come out, and It will get reported immediately as character assassination/personal attack if I were to post it again.

I think you are really looking past the point though. I really hate to be humble or modest or whatever you want to call it, but do you honestly think that I have the ability to irritate so many people, or is this a matter of what is wrong with the many people that got so upset over what I said?

In reality, this is a game, and for me to get the reaction that I did from stating facts, is quite absurd. If any of the people that got upset are classified as leaders, they should be embarrassed by their representation of that server. Personally, if I were on a server and there were leaders were to give that big of a reaction, I would most likely leave entirely out of embarrassment of having them represent in such a way on the official forums.

The only thing that so far has been proven this week is that everything I had said last week was completely true.

Everyone is tired of your trolling. People like you are proving nothing except that your server is filled with attention seeking forum warriors.

If NSP wind bags are going to consistently dominate the wvw forum threads with trash talk, the other two servers are eventually going to make you eat your words. You need to learn to let your actions speak for themselves.

As it is, your server always ends up in third place even though you are capable of dominating on reset night. That tells me that your pugs perhaps find you just as annoying and quarrelsome as we do.

Sorry, but I don’t remember exactly where this is, but there’s a pirate guy that you follow around in an event. The event has a few steps, then he runs off to his home point after. I followed him one time to see where he was going.

When he gets to his home spot in a busted up ship/town/townmadeofships he starts belting out “I am the very model of a modern pirate general…” (pirates of penzance) or something along those lines. He actually goes through an entire round of this song modified for the game and NPC. It was one of the most hilarious surprises I happened across and loved sitting there laughing my kitten off at the lyrics they came up.

Don’t get hit. It really is that easy. Sometimes there is no escape route, and all you can do is be immune thanks to a dodge roll or some other ability. When you get downed in PVE it’s because you did something wrong. Some mobs are extremely dangerous to melee, and should be fought at range.

Have you played this particular event? If so, you are full of crap. Ulgoth the Modniir is a beast unless you have a large group. You will die fighting him at one point or another.

I’m getting tired of these canned responses in this forum: trolls posting ‘l2p’ over and over. The OP has a valid point. There a number of champions that can and will one-shot you without any warning. Of course, these bosses were designed to be fought with a large group. I had a lengthy post over in the DE sub forum on a Malchor’s Leap thread about doing DEs in Leap, but I’ll be honest, I’ve found DEs in Leap to be far less bugged than DEs in Straits or Shore. It’s part of why I planned a guild event in Leap. Obviously, your mileage may vary.

I’m pretty agressive when I play in Leap…. I talk a LOT in /map, and work hard to get ad-hoc groups coordinated enough to do the Lyssa chain because I find the challenge so much fun.

I feel the same way about the Balthazar event in Straits… one of the most fun events in the game, and I’ve been seriously bummed that it’s been stuck for so long, I’m really hoping that the DEC 3 patch resolved the event a bit better.

I dunno, maybe I’m just nuts, but all in all, I would like to see more zones like Orr…. would love to see a Lvl 80 Charr zone getting seriously bombarded by Flame Legion, or a lvl 80 Asura Zone that’s neck deep in inquest and golems….

First, I mean no offense. I respect your opinion and I can see where you are coming from. It is almost always fun in an MMO to be part of a large group accomplishing things together.
However, I strongly believe that a game should be fun by design – and not because a gamer went way out of their way to make it fun for themselves. Your experience in the zone is not typical.

if everything was soloable for you antisocial newbs that apparently wandered into gw2 thinking it was a 1player game, then why would anyone group up for anything? if theres no incentive to team for things, then there’ll be no reason to do it and that aspect of the game will die, which will cause the community as a whole to suffer because the game wont be as social…

Well, we wandered into GW2 thinking it was a game, not Facebook. I admit I was very confused about that.

Aside from my mistake, though, group content is just a nice way of saying that the game is easy for people who can’t play to save their lives, and impossible for those who would like to.

Personally, I look at it the opposite way. If what you want to do is hang out with people, why are you playing a video game by yourself in front of a computer?

wow. this is some of the stupidest crap ive ever read lol

and to answer your question, ever consider the possibility that some people cant go out to hang with people? if mmos arent all about being social then please explain what they actually are

and lastly, yeah sure group content is all for bad gamers – totally that makes sense, because teamwork takes no skill, right. got it.

And thank you for summing up why some people don’t like the “social” aspect of the game. They don’t want to be forced to speak with children like you.

The sort of social interactions that take place in an MMO tend to be extremely limited and shallow… due to the fact that you are dealing with someone that you don’t know, can’t see, and can’t take seriously (everyone role-plays to some extent). It is all very awkward if you think about it.

Seriously. I’m beginning to think that Anet has given up on the Ranger.
Our traits lines are a complete mess; they have no synergy and way too many traits are outright useless, either because they are bugged or their effects are completely unnoticeable.
And… our pets. They are only useful in PVE. I’ve rarely been more frustrated than the day I decided to check out WvW with my level 80 ranger. It was just… ugly.

The class has very few useful ulitlity skills, very limited damage output, and very few viable build options (in PVE). PVP is just a joke with a Ranger. The profession may need a total redesign.

Anyway, it is nice to see some bug fixes. I just wish Anet would start prioritizing profession bugs and balance issues.
