I’d say Ranger seems like a common profession for Sylvari NPCs, so there is that. I’ve seen a couple of Warrior NPCs too, so that also seems fitting. Sylvari seem pretty in tune with nature as a whole so Ranger (with taming animals) and Elementalist all seem appropriate. But they seem like the least obvious of all races re: which class fits.

Humans could be anything, depends a lot on backstory too. A human raised on the streets would be most fitting as a thief, for instance, while a noble may be a more… “dignified” class, so to speak.

Charr are easiest: Warrior (Blood Legion), Engineer (Iron Legion) or Thief (Ash Legion). When picking a sparring partner, Dinky’s description says he’s picked on for being a Guardian, so that class would be unlikely to be glorified. Elementalists are probably a little too close to the Flame Legion, too.

Norn are all about glory and booze but also animals, so Warrior and Ranger seem to be the most fitting. Most Norn we encounter out there are warriors, too.

Asura actually seem to fit Engineer the most, since they like to build and tinker with things.

Ultimately though you can roleplay as any class you want, since if you’re roleplaying you probably have a background for your character anyway and so you can make whatever excuse you want for their class. :p

Charr can actually do many different things, as legions can have different uses for different classes. An engineer in Ash can make spy gear, a elementalist in Iron can use fire to weld, and a ranger in Blood can be on the front lines as a beastmaster. There is a thread on the charr forum called ‘Choosing your Legion’ which has great answers about which class can go where. And the Asuran forums are up at arms about how different engineer tech and Asuran tech are so different. Asura are all the casters. And Asuran necros look terrifying, and since I have one, I should know. Sylvari are curious, and will do whatever, if they are able to do it.

Probably. If it helps on battle, go for it. If it doesn’t, don’t. Dull pain drugs might be considered wussy, though.

Is there any Charr only guilds on Dragonbrand? I might also make one. Probably called the Shadow warband, if not something else.

I seem to recall an Asura in Metrica Province claiming that the world’s highest concentration of intelligence could be found there, gradually diminishing as one went further out into the world, “until you reach the Black Citadel, where no measurable intelligence can be found.”

They call them selves smart yet they made a mistake. They can’t measure any intelligence in Black Citadel because the devices they’re using cannot even begin to comprehend how smart Charr really are. Asuran Epic Fail!

I don’t think the Charr would go to Rata Sum. A war between the two would most likely happen on Charr territory, and would most likely be started by the Asura, through insults/accidents with tech etc. But for either side to have a real advantage would be if either side managed to give unanimous support to a leader. Charr need someone to have good claims to the Claw, while Asura need an undisputed genius. Asura would take a while to pull together as a nation, as they are used to working for themselves and a few others. They must also have the full support of the Inquest. Charr would have an easier time, as they are used to working with others, and know to put their warband/legion/nation ahead of themselves. But they need both the Claw and the ability to get every Charr to acknowledge them as leader, and they must have good standing with all the legions, including Flame. Right now, neither nation can afford war, and would probably end up with a stale-mate anyway.

If we had it, the only real problems we’d have were the ghosts, because we would have crushed the Flame legion with the full support of all the other High Legions, and chances are, though slim, that the Flame Legion could come back from exile if someone got the Claw.

Well, that contradicts what is said on the Wiki, which is that it now “hangs within the Imperator’s Core within the Black Citadel.” Can somebody who’s read Ghosts of Ascalon confirm whether this is actually the case?

My understanding was that Smodur does have the Claw, but he hasn’t attempted to claim the title of Khan-Ur for himself because he knows the Imperators of the Blood and Ash Legions would immediately contest him for it if he did. That runs the risk of plunging the Charr back into another civil war, which is why he’s holding off.

Perhaps. We are currently in a civil war with Flame, if all the High Legions were fighting, us Charr would be a thousand times worse off than we all ready are.

Sometimes it makes the NPCs stupid looking. And sometimes, much to the delight of Ash legion Charr players, it reveals things that we couldn’t see before, like Sicaea the Shrouded’s head. I don’t have a pic, but she has pink/red fur. Awesome. And Caithe doesn’t look any different.

One of the most obvious reasons a war could start is due to Asura comments. Asura are almost always insulting the intelligence of others.

Insults are not a reason for a full scale war.

In fact, they are often the reasons for wars, though it mostly seems to England starting them because for that. Asura are not the smartest race. They don’t have much common sense, they meddle in things they think they understand and many other reasons besides. Even if someone’s ugly, the social convention is not to point it out. Doing so constantly would get on anyone’s nerves sooner or later. If I repeatedly told an Asura it inventions sucked, when they did, they Asura would not like that. I would probably end up getting punched sooner or later too. What Asura lack is politeness. While other races are smart enough not to point out things like that, Asura are not. That doesn’t seem very smart to me. And an Asura/Charr war would end up stale-mate, anyone who says different is probably an idiot, or very arrogant.

I think Snaff would have to be a mesmer, because I don’t think he’s a necro, and certainly not a ele. And on the Snaff/Zojja romance thing, I have read books before when that has happened (in the Immortals quartet, by Tamora Pierce), between master and apprentice as well. It had the same kinds of foreshadowing/recognition that one poster up was talking about.

Sylvari aren’t some sort of forest elves. They do not fall into the Ranger trope. “Wyld Hunt” is a folklore reference. In fact, since Sylvari are all about being noble, helpful and protective, their most ‘logical’ (or cliche, if you so wish) choice would be Guardian.

Norn are the stereotypical Rangers.

I know that, but hey, I wanted a Sylvan hound. Only way I know of right now is to make Sylvari ranger and pick Fern Wolf in bio. And I didn’t want to be a Norn. For RP purposes, Charr are anything that fits with their legion, Humans and Sylvari can do whatever, though Sylvari Mesmers are very popular, Norn are Rangers, Warriors and Guardians, with some magic users thrown in. Almost no Engineers or Thieves. Asura are obvious spellcasters, with Thieves, Engineers and Guardians next. Almost no Rangers or Warriors, though more Warriors than Rangers.

Female Charr shout other things, but they totally sound deadly. Male Charr are wussies.

Sylvari have much better looking armor than Charr. Only people allowed to gripe on and on about armor and how bad it looks is them, and myself. That’s were Anet got bored. And this isn’t just me, unlike you who seem to think eveyone’s like you OP. Go visit the Charr forum area, there is no shortage of wishing for better armor there. Anet better change OUR armor first, not yours. Sylvari customisation has the most options, and I love it for that. One thing, tell me about glow color beforehand, okay? OP stop complaining. Anet has more important things to do than kiss your butt and give you what you want on a golden platter.

They have the best personal story. Charr do feel slow, but their running animation is great. Armor looks okay, but don’t expect to look beautiful. FemCharr are awesome. Charr armor has a steampunk feel, just like their city. If you want to play Charr, go ahead. They have problems, but so do all the races.

As the title suggests, I’d always assumed your personal story was designed to be solo’d (hence ‘personal story’) However I believe I’ve read its possible to bring players in with you, and despite my thief character meeting the required level for his story missions (or exceeding it sometimes) he still struggles when the story throws a veteran or harder boss monster at him.

I do love the story system in this game and the fact that its expanded on purely by how you choose to progress, but its going to be impossible for me to complete it (atleast on my thief) if I can’t do it without finding someone to help me.

They can be solo’d but it can be hard to do so as a thief. On my Charr thief, I had loads of problems, even when I was the right lvl. However I have managed to solo all my missions so far, I’m onto lvl 19 for charr, lvl 8 for Sylvari, and 8 for Asura. This is quest lvls not my actual character lvls. Try different weapon sets, I switched from P/P to D/P and it helped a lot. If you want to kite, get a shortbow or go P/P. S/P and S/D/ and D/D work too, but I don’t use them. Depends on skills too. For my thief I have Battle Roar and Caltrops, which works for me. Just figure out your play-style, and soon it’ll become easier.

Not really on topic, but I think Zojja has a crush on Snaff. The way she scolds the Asura who goes on about the name Snaff Prize and stuff, gave me the idea. It was the Val-A golem bio choice ‘In Snaff’s Footsteps’ quest.

Ignorant Asura. The reason we, the Charr, use proper tech is because, when all is said an done, your stuff just blows up too easily to be consider a threat. Charr tech can be mass produced quickly and well, it does work 99% of the time perfectly and we even have air-ships and tanks with turrets on them. And we can progress our tech. Your magi-tech cannot progress, because you have already reached the height of use for it. You cannot change how magi-tech works, but we can evolve our tech to do jobs your magi-tech can’t. We even have early stages electric powered tech. When we create solar power and wind power, like RL humans, then will you consider us a threat? Probably not. Your race couldn’t even come together and agree on a favorite color without civil war erupting. Call us smelly cat beasts, but you would not even have the courage to say that to our faces. I don’t know why you think you are the kings. You’ll learn, after all, you’re supposed to the smart ones. But you’re not.

Yup. That’s what he/she posted before. And I agree. Asura could win, but have a racial paranoia about working together, while what Charr need is a leader with a Claw of Khan-Ur and they’re set to steam-roll Tyria. And the Inquest and Flame Legion need to be dealt with. We can’t have sexist losers (Flame Legion) and instinct-following idiots (Inquest) around.

I just gave mine a two part name. Autumnbright. I had Autumndawn, then I realised that I would have two characters that had dawn in their name. I tried to get both Autumnglow and Autumnsong, but they were taken. It’s not a totally lore-accurate name, but both her and my Asura are alts, so I didn’t really mind.

I just gave her a two part name. Same with my Sylvari. It’s hard to get one word names, so two part seemed good. Hauntingmist, because she’s a necro. I wanted to change it after I heard the tutorial though. A line about something to do with chaos, so I wanted to call her Hauntingchaos.

but you would think there would be lots of other skeletons. The pale tree isn’t exactly small either, so it would have a root system with a pretty big range as well.

With that, there could be deer, moa, drakes, fireflies, panthers and spiders under it too. So why didn’t the Pale Tree re-create them as plants? I think they might be Dragon Minions, simply based on that.It would make for an interesting turn of events. Many races are wary of them because of their curious nature, so would that make some distrust them? It’s not impossible.

Technically, Sylvari will become the smartest race, simply because once at least one of every Sylvari learns something new, which is transferred to the Pale Tree, which new Sylvari learn, and then they don’t focus on learning old things or trying to outdo each other. And with unbounded curiosity, they will go into situations that other wouldn’t. They’ll learn from that, not do it again. They’re like robots, that way. On the Sylvari forum section, there is a post which thinks that it could be possible for them to be robots.

I hate Flame Legion because they are all sexist losers. I have worse names for them, but I can’t use them or the sensor will make it kitten. I know they were helpful, but I hate sexism, and as such, hate them all. If you’re Flame and born a girl, you’re royally stuffed. The use females as slaves. Unacceptable. That’s why I hate them. Not because I listen to Iron propaganda. I’m not stupid.

They also respect the norn because they held off invading charr before they called it quits. And charr and norn are drinking partners. If a norn can out drink a charr, they’re considered cool.

All the High Legions have strayed from their path. Iron is too concerned with peace, and using propaganda to confuse the past (Flame Legion called “traitors”, when they are responsible for turning the Charr into a force to be reckoned with and the retaking of Ascalon). The Flame Legion is too busy with their search for false gods. Ash and Blood simply lack the initiative.

Ash are busy stopping Flame trying to kill everyone, and making sure assassins and spies die before they can get anywhere. I agree, Blood are idiots who lack initiative. I find it amusing that you called the one legion with the most thieves, lacking initiative. I think that’s the one thing they don’t lack.

Charr aren’t the only ones with clipping issues. My Sylvari ranger, in the tutorial, was talking to Caithe, moved her hand, and it when right through the bag attached to her belt. And it still does that. And my Asura’s hand keeps clipping through her starting armor. But Charr clipping is the worst.

I’ve never really had this problem, but that’s because I spent hours going through the lore and making choices on bio, classes, names and other choices.

No, sorry, turns out it is “Ashes and Death!” Also, “Guns and Iron!” and “Fury and Blood!” So looks like you’re right.

No, she keeps saying “Ash is death!” And then she said something about Iron and Blood. I thought they were legion based, but they might not be.

I just started as a Sylvari ranger, and plan on making a mesmer too. They just seem to fit the best with the race. I’m still have no idea on how the Pale Tree manages to be so confusing. I find my way around Black Citadel easier. And Charr have a whole legion devoted to sneaky ops too. And toggle the lights too, I ended up glowing a weird color that didn’t work at all, so I restarted. Lucky I hadn’t done anything, not even finished the tutorial.
