Couple years late? ppt is dying game mode except for few servers or for staying in relevant tiers.

PPT should be byproduct of fights/stomps & not the main objective…

have to disagree strongly with this.

wvw is like an RTS where the player is like an individual unit. fights come from taking objectives. ive been on dragonbrand since i started years ago and have seen the efforts of the server leaders who brought in guilds for coverage and helped train the pugs/militia.

ppt is not a dying game mode, its the core of wvw. if you want an open world death match with no objective and mindless play, go somewhere else.

Ya, he is right. You can’t comprise you team of unorthodox builds and expect to “be competitive with higher skilled teams”. You will get steam rolled. If you are going to run a non meta build, honestly you can probably only do that with 1 player and be competitive.

Here is the main issue with playing a different build. You can be really good at it, but if your teammates have no idea how to play and coordinate with a build like that, you will do badly. This will take a little time for them to get used to your build and know what you need and when for help/ peels etc. This is why running even 2 odd builds get you in trouble.

I would grab meta classes and a zerker. As you are playing ranger, I would say maybe theif/mesmer + double ele + engi or sub one of the eles out for a shoutbow.

thanks for the feedback and explanation, sounds like this is the best route to take. much appreciated friend!

still open to other suggestions if y’all got some.

Open world PvE dueling can be fun, but it is not something everyone wants and it runs the risk of upsetting pure PvE players. Therefore I do not see Anet adding open world dueling.

I feel a better suggestion would be to have dueling arenas in the mists lobby, so players can quickly jump into a free arena and duke it out 1v1.

i like the idea of an area in HotM where you can duel others while waiting for a queue to pop.

hello all,

i am looking to start recruiting players for a dedicated spvp team and need some advice. mainly play a sb/axe&torch condi trap ranger, and do fairly well. i usually start the match capping far and rotating to where the team fight is. wondering what classes i should seek out that will compliment my style.

i want to break away from the current cele stuff, bring some builds into the mix that we dont see a lot. i am not looking to be the #1 group, just want to be competitve with the higher skilled teams out there.

so heroes, i ask that you think outside the box and propose some team comps that i can try out.

thanks!

Does anyone else actually like the EotM map? It’s huge, lots of choke points, open areas much larger than anything in WvW borderlands, and giant keeps.

I feel like if EotM had become the new borderland instead of an overflow/karmatrain map it would have been much better received and liked.

But maybe that’s just me.

i love the map, not just you. i solo roam eotm often and always find myself thinking how fun it would be if it was an actual borderland where the PPT mattered.

It works both ways. Defense always loses, attackers might be driven off temporarily but pure defense strat is just dying a slow death

a group of 5 rotating disablers and using siege can defend against quite a lot while waiting for backup.

“pure” anything never works for, well, anything.

when eotm first dropped there were some great fights, i love the map and the fact you need to watch your positioning so closely.

since the points do not matter for actual wvw, it ended up being a k-train map.

i appluad anet for bringing some of the features from eotm into a real borderland and am surprised that there is so much QQ around it. this map will set apart good players from bad; those who asess(lolfilter) the situation before a fight.

Unless you’re the leading server in a massive blowout win, it’s going to be near impossible to hold a tower long enough to get a WP anyway.

these pessimistic replies are not needed. you waypoint keeps, most servers have people stationed in keeps who queue upgrades, and place and refresh siege. they are the ones who will call out incs and throw disablers when the keep is attacked.

rifle turret is nice on s/d builds for the toolbelt skill, half the cooldown of the rocketboots toolbelt skill, and surprise shot itself has more range and does more damage than rocket kick.

elixir gun 4 can be used to disengage as well as close gaps, just have to practice rotating right before you use it.

im running a similar s/d build for roaming right now and loving it.

I run elixir gun instead of goggles, and go for the knockback on turrets. the nice thing about engi is that there is a lot of variation depending on your playstyle. time those dodges and position yourself intelligently and you are very deadly in a group with s/d.

I predict the removal of white swords will weed out all the wvw players who do not care about ppt or helping their server become better.

personally I like to scout, and my server uses voice-chat. I already call out where the enemy is and what structures are under attack. the removal of white swords will only force me to be more quick and intelligent about where to scout. map awareness is key, you dont need white swords to predict where the enemy will strike.

scouting will become more useful, those who say scouting isnt rewarding are just longing for the wrong types of rewards. the greatest reward is helping your server and climbing to the top. if you called out an inc, disabled siege until help arrived and ultimately saved the structure, the ppt and praise from your server is your reward.

Cool build, few things you could try:

Maybe switch GS with staff. Staff #5 used right can have a huge impact on fights while #1 and #2 (don’t detonate) provide insane damage.

Also when running with a group I like to use resolute healer instead of two-handed mastery, but that’s more personal preference than anything.

I like the idea of having people posted up in towers to defend. This may be a fun part of the WvW experience for some players, and having a need for defenders would allow people who enjoy this style of play to form organized groups/networks of their own that can work with commanders.

Not everyone thinks the zerg is the defining aspect of WvW. I’ve wanted Anet to do something that would promote taking on a more defensive style of play for a while and this may be a step in that direction.

What? Name one person who plays GW2 and their most fun moment is to just sit in a tower. That makes zero sense.

Some people do love to defend, and that is different than just randomly sitting in a tower. They enjoy the strategy of trying to defend when someone is attacking.

Horrible idea by ANET. This is just another example of dumbing down the game.

I enjoy running supply/sieging a place up/upgrading/keeping watch.

Somehow reduce the effectivness of zergs!

I can’t give any ideas on how to do this but it is so boring running around at 5fps with a bunch of green names floating above invisible bodies spamming the 11111111111.

I wish tactics could be implemented in some way.

This. Removing the AoE cap so blobbing has a risk. Currently WvW can be described with one sentence:

BLOB ALL THE THINGS -rolls face across keyboard- 11111111111111111

Do you guys run with a coordinated and organized guild/commander ever? Should try it sometime, because it doesn’t sound like you have ever been on vent/ts with a large group (guess you call those blobs?) that have set tactics and plays to take objectives and fight off enemy zergs.

Even in HUGE battles a lot of the time there is a method to the madness. Try joining a serious guild and hopping into vent with them during a raid.

Edit: WvW can be made more fun by joining a serious WvW guild.

NCSOFT 4Q and Yearly results

It isn’t surprising that sales are up. The game is pretty much full on P2W now. If you don’t pay you will quickly fall behind other players.

Also the game still has had no competition to draw players away. Whatever report follows a few months after ESO and Wildstar release will be the one to watch for the real health of the game.

Pay to win what? So you don’t have to buy resource collectors? Do you know what P2W means?

ESO will be the flop of the year (just read every single independant review or experience the stress test betas yourself, it’s pretty bad, not an Elder scrolls game and not a real MMO experience), and Wildstar only caters to a small playerbase interested in PvP who aren’t interested in graphics. Both these games will get a huge migration of those MMO hoppers who will leave in 2-6 months, same as what happened to GW2.

GW2 is doing far better than what can be expected in a shrinking market.

I would suggest doing more research on wildstar. PvP is only a small part of that game.

As to GW2, how is it not P2W? Please point out how I can get good looking new armors in the last year that doesn’t involve the gem store? Or perhaps tell me how I can obtain watchwork sprockets next week outside of the vastly superior gem store only mining pick? Or maybe tell me how I can reasonably participate in super adventure box hard mode without the gem store only coin? Or maybe the gem store only resource packs for ascended jewelcrafting… I could go on and on, but that isn’t the purpose of this thread. I’m certainly not alone, many people see GW2 as a P2W game now, but that is just the way the market is heading, people have more money than time.

GW2 takes money to operate. Since there is no sub they have to find a way to make money.

The stuff you listed that require real life money (please go on by the way, i’m curious) barely counts as things you need to “win”.

I spend roughly 10 dollars/month for gems to get stuff I want, but before I started buying gems I had no problem keeping up. People complaining about this game being P2W haven’t played actual P2W games or are just extremely entitled to the point where they feel they have a right to EVERYTHING for free.

Critical Thinking
a build for WvW.

Basically a triple meditation build with high crit chance/crit damage.

Traits

0/30/30/10/0

Radiance – Inner Fire: When you are set on fire, you gain fury.

- Powerful Blades: Sword and Spear damage increased

- Right Hand Strength: Critical-hit chance with one-handed weapons increased

Valor – Meditation Mastery: Reduces recharge on Meditations

- Focused Mind: Meditations grant Fury

- Monk’s Focus: Using a Meditation heals you.

Honor – Resolute Healer: Generate a Shield of Absorption when you start reviving an ally.

Gear/Weapons

3 Pieces of PPT/ 3 Pieces of PTV with 2 Balthazar/2 Rage/2 Ogre

Wondering what trinkets/rings/etc to use.

PPT Greatsword with sup. sigil of force / PPT Sword with sup. sigil of purity/PPT Torch with sup. sigil of perception

Utility Skills/Heal/Food

Judges Intervention/Contemplation of Purity/Smite Condition

Shelter

Using curry butternut squash for food, +100 precision/10% crit damage.
___________________________________________________________

I’m starting to become much less casual of a player, and would love to hear how I can improve on this build.

Really digging sword/torch, would like to stick with these weapons.

So by that logic unless you buy an MMO at release you are stuck on a barren trash server? And that’s fair?

Nope. Analogy a farce.

Actually, it is simple logic that if you buy an MMO months after launch, there will be servers that are full.

Your wide sweeping generalization of all other servers being trash is pretty ludicrous though.

Why are you blaming new playersfor not claiming servers that became full before they purchased the game? The analogy doesn’t work, and is indeed ludicrous.

I’m not blaming anyone. Just stating that if a server is full it will be harder to get into, much like a sold out concert.

Analogy is working as intended.

No, really, it isn’t.

I would love to hear some reasons why this analogy is ‘ludicrous’.

I will also try to get this thread back on topic with ways to combat OPs problem;
-server transfers are free until guesting arrives, correct? why doesn’t your clan transfer to a different server so everyone can play together?
-you and your friend who can’t log into JQ start new heroes on a different server and find a new guild. make some new friends!

actually it does.

GW2 comes out>OP’s clan members start playing on JQ>OP does not join his clan members right away>JQ becomes full>OP starts playing GW and wants to play on JQ which is now full.

Concert is announced>OP’s clan members get tickets>OP does not get tickets right away>Show sells out>OP wants tickets to a now sold out concert.

Guesting sounds great, the 8 day wait does not…. by then his hard copy would have arrived and buying the digital download today is / was / will always be a waste..

are you seriously implying that it’s somehow Anet’s fault that the digital download was a waste when your friend clearly could have gone that route the first time?

when a server is full obviously it won’t be easy to get into. It’s like trying to get into a sold out concert, doesn’t matter that your friends are in the show having a good time, you should have got your ticket when you first heard about it.

Now, not all zones have a ton of people in them when I’m playing but, I have never gone into a zone and not encountered another player. I would say 80% of the time I have absolutely no problem finding people for champs and world events. When I do have trouble, it’s usually early in the morning.

I think it’s just about perfect in terms of population. Although I’ve always been a fan of smaller, closely-knit servers. If you’re having trouble finding people, join a guild.

i skimmed that article so maybe i missed it but, i saw nothing talking about the social aspect of these games. Not many people get ‘addicted’ to single player rpgs that have a similar form of character progression that keeps you playing. I think the social aspect of MMOs is one of the main things that keeps players logging on excessively.

I think that article is kind of a cop-out. People need to realize it’s about self control. Maybe the developers ARE putting in things for the sole purpose of keeping players coming back but come on guys, it’s a video game, go outside and talk to girls.

Definitely. We aren’t robots. We have the choice to not play. This does however work towards humanities weaknesses. This stuff will most likely make your body want it, even if you mind is saying this sucks.

But you’re right. The choice eventually lies on us. I stopped playing any grinding a week ago and the game is much better for it. I also decided not to play every day and I’m way more productive in life.

I agree completely that they do prey on their players mental weaknesses. These games can and will suck you in, but you said it perfectly; the choice eventually lies on us.

all things in moderation, heroes.

I have not read this whole thread so correct me if i’m wrong.
no one knows the exact changes to AoE being made, yet everyone is acting like these skills will be next to useless.
wait till more information comes out about it to make a final decision, until then, theorycraft and think of other builds for your class that rely less on AoE skills.

also

AoE type builds generally take less skill to play, I think this change will help PvP immensely. People need to overcome and adapt rather than wish for things not to change.

AoE type attacks generally take less skill to avoid, I think this change will help bad players immensely. People need to overcome and adapt rather than wish for things to change.

if AoE is easier to avoid, and they are nerfing AoE, then that would mean more single target attacks happening which are harder to avoid.

this helps bad players how?
