This is my current S/D set for pvp.
This set gives higher focus on steal, and works best against classes relying on boons.
High dmg % achieved by maintaining high initiatives, in other words, relying more on auto-atk than skill spamming.
Basic rotation = infiltrator strike, 3 auto atk, shadow return, repeat.
Taking Thieves’ guild over basilisk because it is more a high dmg sustain build than a burst one.

Feedbacks much appreciated!

S/P PvE levelling build?

I personally think S/P is the best gear for PVE. The S auto attack hits multiple enemies (for quite a big radius in fact); coupled the with signet of malice.
You are virtually invulnerable fighting melee mobs with 100% uptime of Black Powder. Certain champions (that doesnt do aoe) can be soloed with nothing more than auto atk+ black powder.
In fact, camps at WvW are easily soloable with S/P + signet of malice set up.

You also get condition removal with shadow return (#2) and burst with pistol whip, if and when needed.

Strifer.3507

I main a S/D thief (alt SB) and the only main big hit to the build is the lost of stunbreaker in shadow return. The +1 initiative on LS is hardly noticeable unless you are a mindless #3 spammer.
In any event, the nerf is kind of offset by the buff on Steal… somewhat.

I acknowledge the reduced range of CB, but it is not game changing/breaking. To those who complains about the ineffectiveness of the skill now when sieging keeps, take it with a bit of salt (or popcorn) like the OP’s suggestion (albeit sarcastic). After all, how many class gets to flank enemy zergs from the back, picking off enemies one by one, AND still get out alive unnoticed; or stealth long enough to ninja a Keep’s Lord without even sieging the front door?
(In layman’s terms, there’s a role for every class, and sieging the front door aint it for thiefs.)

Hey guys, would appreciate your comments and suggestions with regards to my offensive tank Guardian especially my traits, mostly for dungeons and some WvW actions.

http://tinyurl.com/9f4v7vk

In short I’m running a 20/15/5/30/0 build. With dps in mind and tankyness secondary.

Greatsword is for general DPS and really just that “bad S” look – The whole reason why I made a Guardian. Mace+shield for the sustainability during boss fights.
I’m still level 48 atm and Hammer is abit clunky for open area PVE. But may bring it to the table depending on situations in dungeons, once I am more familiar with it.

I’m thinking to go with Soldiers set (Power/toughness/vitality) or Knight set (Power/Prec/Vitality) (because I understand Soldiers is kind of hard to obtain) and occasionally switching to glass cannon Berserker set for general trolling at open world PVE and WvW. (So I heard glass cannon staff build is fun!)

Condition damage mini guide

Strifer.3507

I’ve only gone through the OP, but not all the replies here, so I’m not sure if anyone has covered this:

Condition duration that stacks in DURATION (not intensity) – it is correct to say that it ticks by the full second. But remember that they stack in duration – meaning, even at 1.2 seconds, if I can get 5 stacks, I will get an extra tick at the end of the 5th tick. I haven’t personally tested this, but I’ve always believed this to be so.

Condition duration vs condition damage – whilst it may be correct that 20% increase in duration theoretically does more damage than 20% increase in condition damage, but remember that duration can easily go wasted into the background when the duration lasts longer than the mob’s health. I.e. if you can put up a consistent duration throughout the whole of the mob’s health, it is better to invest in damage instead of duration.

The dungeons are easy enough as it is even for casual gamers (myself included).

The trick is to learn the mechanics of the dungeons – which is difficult to do if you are running with full team fresh members. My best suggestion to make dungeons enjoyable is to have each one of you solo-finding PuGs to join, learn the mechanics after a few runs, then team back together for some togetherness enjoyment.

Happy dungeoning.

Traits not working (not suitable, more accurately) underwater is a common problem with all classes and builds, not just engineers who don’t play grenade.

Precisely because grenades are OP underwater, especially so for grenadiers who specced for it, that they needed a well deserved nerf underwater. I don’t mean to be offensive but I understand your complaint…

I have a level 80 ranger … before people wonder, the shortbow NEEDED a nerf.

Probably 90% of ALL bots are RANGERS using SHORTBOW. Why do you think that is? There are literally PACKS of them running in every zone. Why? Because it was TOO GOOD. When it is so good that it becomes the bot standard you had better expect the balance bat to fall your way.

Be honest … DPS wise you could easily get away with a Bear and skill 1 (auto attack) and do nothing else and down almost anything. Oh no we might have to work 2-5 into the rotation now. Anyone crying about a nerf should be forced to play an Ele for a month for perspective.

Because the Ranger is the only profession with a permanent pet and the short bow is the only viable Ranger weapon and it is a ranged weapon. It has absolutely nothing to do with it being overpowered.

I know it isn’t something you want to do but … I did say “be honest”. Gold sellers are in it to make REAL LIFE MONEY. There is a reason they were choosing the ranger. Any class can be used to bot (pet or no pet). The Ranger was just too good to pass up … like it or not. No amount of spin will get you out of that logic trap. Sorry, if that helps any

So the bots are ones determining which class is OP and which is balanced now and not the player base / devs?

Very very sound logic mate!

To Magic night and anyone else argueing about whether or not sniper rifles should/could exist in the game. I’d like to point out they already do…there is already a rifle that is called “sniper rifle” that you can earn in pvp/pve. Also this game has magical teleporters laser rifles and tanks AND helicopters…. So the whole arguement is sorta pointless dribble that i’m not sure why anyone would make or argue but whatever.

End point, sniper rifles already exist in the game “the whisper rifle skin has a laser scope as well, beleive the legendary has a scope too” so….its obviously an option. I see no problem with putting it in, to say it would be over powered is to suggest arenanet wouldnt balance it….not that the weopon itself is op. What if the toolkit used a chainsaw….would that make it over powered? no it would be a different animation. So stop with the pointless dribble lol.

Thank you so much for putting a stop to all these Magic Night nonsense.

And now the ridiculous CQB definition argument too which our ‘friend’ here has got out of hand (again, sigh) where the original argument was that a long range prowess for engineer will make them OP since we already have strong “CQB”.

Pretty obvious he haven’t really played a ranger before… or a warrior or elementalist…

Copyright/TM Misconceptions and the GW2 Naming policy

in Suggestions

Posted by: Strifer.3507

Strifer.3507

Hello,

I’d like to voice my concern on what is in my opinion, an overly harsh and conservative policy. Either there is a fundamental misunderstanding of US copyright and trademark law, or these rules were meant to be a catch all and agents have not been trained well enough to weed out the acceptable vs. unacceptable names. My concerns cover the following bullets:
- Reference religious or historical figures.
- Reference real-life people.
- Reference names of copyrighted or trademarked characters, materials, or products.
- Use misspellings or alternative spellings of names that violate any of the above rules.

The issue here is names are not copyrightable. From www.copyright.gov, copyrights are “a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed.”

Names, titles, slogans, and short phrases are not copyrightable. Band names are not copyrightable, yet I’ve seen people temporarily banned and asked to rename their character because it was named after Led Zeppelin. (Sources, please see: http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-protect.html#band , and additional bullets below this anchor).

Thus, the rule that we can’t reference copyrighted characters is IMPOSSIBLE to break because you can’t legally copyright a character name.

This brings me to the next point, which is Trademark law. From the uspto website, a trademark is defined as “a word, phrase, symbol, or design, or combination thereof, that identifies and distinguishes the source of the goods of one party from those of others.”

A trademark only protects the owners right against infringement on related goods or services. IE, the company Apple has a trademark on the name and logo with regard to software/hardware goods and services. They can’t however claim trademark protection over apple the food, or any business not related to their company. Trademarks are intended to protect business from companies misleading customers by offering a similar product or service in the same field.

There is also the “fair use” defense with regard to Trademarked names. For instance, people can reference Apple the company in articles, blogs, etc.

Due to the above, its clear that even if a name is trademarked, a company cannot sue a player of Guild Wars 2 for a trademark violation for having a character reference said mark, as they are not related products and services. A character named “Apple Computers” is not in the same field/business of the actual company Apple.

The intent of the rules as I understand it is to prevent vulgar and inappropriate names, as well as prevent defamation of character (so no names like Obama Sucks). As written though, I think the rules are overreaching and are leading to many bans on names that would be legally fine.

The slap in the face comes when throughout the game, I see references to real world people and events. It’s very blatant in places, especially in Guild Wars 1 where one of the skill names is “Smooth Criminal”, a song by Michael Jackson with an icon relating to the reference.

Please reconsider the naming policy and reword it in such a way that still prevents libel, slander, and other vulgar content, but allows users to still make creative/witty names and references. Fair use and laws regarding satire should be taken into consideration.

Could you point us to where Anet says that the reason they have these naming policy in place is to prevent infringement of trademarks (and/or passing off)?

At least, from what I can see at https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-naming-policy/ is this:
“We want Guild Wars 2 to be a safe and fun space for everyone. Guild Wars 2 is a global game, played by people from different countries around the world. People may disagree about what names are offensive and a name that is not offensive to you may be very offensive to another player. When creating a character or guild name for Guild Wars 2, it is encouraged that you select a name that reflects the theme of the game. The guidelines listed below outline the types of names that you can NOT use, and apply to player, character and/or guild names.”

Why make an issue when there is none?

Equipped weapon stats don’t scale with equipped kits. Kits scale with our level. Try equipping any weapon and switch to a weapon kit and check your stats. Now try unequipping any weapon and switch to a weapon kit and check your stats. Weapon kit stats will remain the same, and sadly, the stats is always inferior to even a rare weapon, by design or otherwise.

Would be great if Anet can put some thoughts into this… and also some way around the ugly backpacks especially for engineers who mainly plays with kits (me), any cosmetic benefits to any weapon is lost…. legendary or otherwise.

A direct high powered damage long range kit, or in other words a sniper rifle kit.

Giving engineers sniper like range attack kit would over power our class, considering rangers should be the master of long range dmg.

I thought we were the jack of all trades type class!?
I also thought tht no single profession would really be the Master of something!?
That sounds more like a class thing.

As you’ve said it already, if we’re a jack of all trades, while no profession are a master of something then engineers would be OP.

Im sure he doesnt mean a sniper kit that trumps a rangers bow. Being OP is a balance issue and everything can be balanced.

Its also a wishlist.

You guys can put it on the wishlist but I don’t find it really RP, snipers are a modern profession when it comes to gunmans. The only superb range damage class in history were long bow archers that can shoot some where close to 500meters, just like why guardians (knights) don’t use bows in the game, in history knights have to get off their horses and take off their armors to use bows. I guess this is up to the devs to decide.

Firearms snipers have existed since the invention of firearms.

Secondly, your full of it, if your trying to tell folks they are wrong by basing historical fact to justify a fantasy games rules.

Where did you heard this from snipers have existed since the invention of firearms? Do you even know who invented the gun?

And I’m not fool of it, seriously calm down about this, like I’ve said you guys can put it on the wishlist but it’s up to the devs to decide.

In history, there is no charr, asura, sylvari, norn, magics, focus. I also don’t recall grenades in the form we have in the game now being invented. People don’t even realistically fight a war with a scepter other than being a symbolic icon.

So, yes to sniper kit <3

How is this. Engineers do not have weapons swaps, so either adjust and stop complaining or play another class.

We have no need to rebuild the entire class to suit two complainers and hose the rest of us.

heh heh look at you all mad…good job standing up for your rights. I stand corrected you have the right to tell everyone about how stupid their ideas are so the forum is just theads with screenshots.

And its really you complaining in his thread.

And its seems like you cant deal with the fact that some people dont like how your favorite class is.

AND in your own post you say not to tell you how to play the game and then you end it by telling people to go play another class!

power/rifle build
condition/pistol build
elixir build
survival/turret build
survival/utility build
power/toolbelt build

And many more experimental builds

No one is telling you how to play an Engineer. Engineer class don’t force you to one type of play style. The class don’t need an overhaul of mechanics to suit YOUR play style.

But if you’d like weapon swapping and/or more weapon options, you can always roll a ranger or warrior if straightforward range dps favors you. No one’s stopping you from rerolling another class that fits your playstyle more. “Engineer” is just a word. Its not a playstyle. You can always replace the “Engineer” word with “ranger” or “warrior” or “thief” or “mesmer” or “necromancer” or “guardian” which suits your play style.

TL;DR: Go play other class. TQ!

One more point re condition damage: I think there is no doubt that burn is one of our strongest condition damage.

But again, afaik, when there are other condition damagers around the highest burn damage will kick in first since it only stacks in duration and not intensity.

So the scenario would be that if we have 2 cond dmg engineer spraying flamethrower, only one person’s cond dmg kicks in, and the other would have been deemed disregarded.

Until Anet finds a way to “fix” this problem… cond dmg would not be a viable dps build… at least in PVE sense.

Engi's are weak, need help

in Engineer

Posted by: Strifer.3507

Strifer.3507

Condition damage is not broken when you are fighting a mob alone.

It is broken when more condition damagers comes in due to the 25 cap. Once the cap is reached, unless your condition damage is one of the highest, it will not kick in and wasted in the background.

And the cap reaches very very easily in a normal group of 5.

Also, u need to use the fast ground targeting option.

A crippled class. Why?

in Engineer

Posted by: Strifer.3507

Strifer.3507

People generally give up on Engineer because they had a different expectation of what an Engineer is. I feel most people had this presupposed assumption that Engineer’s focus is to put down strong turrets to do all their jobs. And gave up when didnt find the class meets their expectation.

It cannot be emphasized enough that Engineer’s class mechanics – the toolbelt – is what makes an Engineer shines. Despite certain skills performing the same function, you get to have 2 same function with 2 separate cooldown timers on one skill pick. I get 2 condition removal on 2 separate cooldown timers, or 2 readily deployable nets with the net turret (3 if you include the overcharged).
Or, I can have 2 different function with 1 single skill – a condition removal with aoe revival potion and an endurance refiller with stun breaker. An aoe stealth or stability potion and a 4 sec invulnerability.
The “take up utility slot” argument only works if you are not playing your Engineer right.

And weapon kits – it doesn’t carry stats of your weapon, but it does has stats of its own. Meaning, even if you are still using a level 1 weapon at level 80, you will have the level 80 stats of the weapon kit. No need to hassle about getting an exotic weapon …. yet.
But the true shine about weapon kit is the virtually zero cooldown swap. If you are not utilizing this enough, you are not playing your weapon kit Engineer right.

Strifer.3507

Good ideas but I am very opposed to the idea of mounts. As pointed out above by someone, there are already sufficiently many waypoints around and any introduction of mounts is essentially a revamped of the whole waypoint system – not what should be introduced through an “expansion”, and fortunately i am confident it(mount) is not what Anet intend to have.
If any, it’d be for cosmetic purpose only and maybe a 10% to movement speed boost, or only usable in cities, and without any need of “managing” the mount.

The idea of health, endurance, hunger, etc just for the sake of certain players’ immersion is wholly unnecessary and illogical. Imagine every Ranger now have to “manage” their pets with the same mechanics.

Just because certain quarters of people like a pet companion, it should not be hard imposed on all other players who is fine with the waypoint system. The way your suggestion works, it made it mandatory to have mounts.

Not everyone wants a pet companion. For those who love them, can always choose to roll a Ranger. (Even so, there are already players suggesting an option to remove pets on Rangers as they prefer to do it solo).

Robert Hrouda have you killed those mobs spawns in that room successively in a well organized pug (without voice communication)?

Just curious if you guys play with other players in game instead of in house at ArenaNet.

Those packs are simply WAAAYYYY too overpowered.

And like a poster said in this thread " If these events/dungeons weren’t so buggy/hard we wouldn’t need exploits to do them".

Then I thought about running dungeons in other MMO’s like LotRO, SWTOR, Rift, and WoW. I never ONCE thought of doing an exploit or been in a group that kept doing exploits just to get past something.

I think that is very odd that all of a sudden people have to do it in this game. It is not working ArenaNet!!

just an FYI, that room doesn’t have to be exploited. I haven’t had a single PuG for whom kiteing under my instructions hasn’t worked. sometimes we get it in one go, sometimes it takes 4-5 attempts… but never left that dungeon without having completed it fairly bar one exception where the group were full of themself, and in a hurry to be endgame Leetsters standing around geared up without having played much of the game to get there – with them they rez’d mag out the way without even trying the kite first. I’ve even done it with mostly light armored players and 2 of us medium geared. However, that’s still not the way it’s meant to be. it’s obvious from the shape of the room and allocated space, the fact you have to try buy magg some time.. that it’s intended to be like one of those wave after wave survival things where we’re supposed to hold them off using combat. it’s far too hard to be done THAT way, but it can still be done without cheating. They are well aware of the difficulty of that room though… I think they intend to fix this soon (hopefully).

Now, some insight into “my instructions” would be helpful.

Oddly, my main is an Engineer and I mostly solo-ed all the way through to 80. I found she can handle multiple mobs rather well. My alts are a thief and a guardian which I find not as versatile as an Engineer.

I was running a condition p/p build, with a flamethrower kit and 2 elixirs and/or turrets all the way to Orr which I then switch to pistol/shield. Solo-ing veterans and certain lower level event champions are very much doable.

When I hit 80, being bored with the pistol build, I switched over to rifle/grenade build and never looked back.

EDIT:
small tips btw:
1. supply crate is exceptional in handling overwhelming mobs and life saving.
2. On pistol/flamethrower build, you have 2 blinds (pistol and flamethower), and 1 pushback (flamethower).
3. deploying healing turret and quickly picking it up back reduces its cooldown to around 16 seconds(?).
4. on rifle/grenade build – perfect kiting combo. Net shot from rifle, and then turn to grenade’s chill (#4) and continue bombarding with your grenades till the mob reached you – switch back to rifle for pushback (#4) or continue to net (#2) while walking backwards.
5. Add in Net turret, you can have up to 5 immobilizer at a given time against a single enemy.
6. Elixirs.

My opinion: Underpowered Engineer - It is realy bad at pvp and pve

in Engineer

Posted by: Strifer.3507

Yes and no.
Engineer can do comparable damage, but only with a grenade/power build. Condition damage and turrets are really not viable and underpowered. In PVE.

In WvW, I guess we all shares the general consensus that grenade is the only viable weapon to be used.

Is the Engineer truly underpowered? It forces us to spec into only one viable style – the grenade/power build. Its obvious, the other builds/traits are lackluster comparing to itself, and other classes.

In sPVP however, many builds can be viable, but still second only to elementalist comparing to the other 6 classes.

Like what symke said, why can’t we have both FUN and GEAR, instead of being forced to choose one or the other like what everyone here seems to think?

Because:

Colin Johanson

Fun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.

Simply put you have your FUN, and you have your GEAR. The fact that it doesn’t give you more superpowers doesn’t mean it’s not there.

The real question is: Why do people insist on asking questions that have been answered over and over again?

Rarest loot =/= gear progression. There is none in GW2.
So we’ve reached lvl 80, bought/craft lvl 80 exotics immediately with that amount of gold we’ve saved or gotten so far. And…

That’s it.

While GW2 provides for tonnes of cosmetic armors, cosmetic progression =/= character progression. So at level 80, there’s nothing for your character to progress on.

Before we jump on the chicken and egg argument and someone starts saying “hey, gear doesn’t matter, you can still have fun”. That’s exactly my point; why cant we have fun AND gear at the same time?

Are MMO players trained to play for progression...

To answer your challenge … yes, I am enjoying GW2. But not so much as I’ve hoped to. One of my biggest complains is combat system. And the other is lack of “growth”.
There is a gear progression in game. But to me it’s only cosmetic gear progression. Which to me means that ArenaNet thinks we value our looks most of all. Do you?

Now my challenge to you … What do you do to have fun in GW2? What do you do to enjoy it?
To put it differently … if this game had gear progression … how would that stop you from having fun? You simply choose not to follow that progression, do your own thing and enjoy the game in the way you want.

I really don’t want to insult anyone but it just boggles my mind that people see lack of added options as something better.

I’m glad you brought this up. Firstly, I can and do spend hours customizing the look of my characters. So it’s very important to me, and I imagine to some extent or another it’s important for most people. You gotta look good while you’re smashing faces, after all.

To answer your question—what I do to have fun in GW2—I play it. More specifically my primary interest in the game is the PvP,. I’ve done the hardcore PvP grind, most recently owning about a dozen server firsts for acquiring top-end PvP gear in Rift, which, sadly, made it entirely too easy to destroy people because the gear in that game inflated FAST. Ended up quitting because having such dominance based on gear alone stopped being fun. So there’s a knock against gear progression, even though there are ways around it, which GW2 is already doing really.

I also wanted to address the last couple things you said. You said it boggles your mind that people see a lack of options as better, and that gear progression does not limit your enjoyment of the game. To the former, I agree wholeheartedly. However, the latter is completely untrue.

See, gear progression does limit the content a player can do, because one must have the prerequisite gear to even be capable of doing the content. Gear checks and all. No matter how good your tactic for beating the encounter, you simply cannot if you don’t have the stat numbers required to survive hits or to kill the boss in X time.

This style of content ends up being limiting, because with each tier of gear progression added, smaller and smaller numbers of players can access it. It also limits the content that the progression players can enjoy, because their gear advantage begins to absolutely wreck older areas. This creates a lack of options for a significant portion of the community, and as we’ve agreed, it boggkitten th of our minds why anyone would think less options are better.

Your primary interest is PVP. That’s where all your differences stem from.

sPVP is gear-irrelevant.

WvW which would then only require a scale down and/or stats cap.

And all your arguments would then be invalid. So can we now have our PVE gear progression/threadmill?

Like what symke said, why can’t we have both FUN and GEAR, instead of being forced to choose one or the other like what everyone here seems to think?

EDIT: Btw, gearless PVP is not an innovation from GW2. There are other older games that had subscribed to that format long before GW2.

Guild Wars 2: A Hardcore Gamer's Prospective (Long Read)

tl;dr
But let me give you my perspective.
The words “hardcore” and “gamer” should never be used together. It’s a freakin’ game. It’s not a second job, it’s not like you get bragging rights of any sort of accomplishment. You play games to relax after you have accomplished something in real life.
Seriously, do you want to be lying on your deathbed and have your major life accomplishment be “I was top DPS in X game”?

The words “too long” and “didnt read” should never be used together. It makes all your subsequent comments and views lack substance and irrelevant.

Can Engineers Tank in PvE/Dungeons?

Engineers can’t tank.
Looking at our skills, we are more designed for kiting.

Flamethrower and Firearms Gotchas - Wasting Major Traits

Actually its right. While the duration does increase as you say the damage only tics once a second so it doesn’t matter if it lasts 1.99 seconds. It has to last 2 seconds before it will increase the damage actually done.

Oops, ya it looks like thats right. Thanks.

Wrong. Burning stacks in duration.
Say if your first flame jet does 1.25 burning in 1 second, your second flame jet stacks to it after the first burning tick to make it 1.50 burning. By the end of the 4th flame jet, you get 1 extra burning tick.
Couple this with napalm specialist (20% burn duration) and the condition duration increase from explosives in general you will be looking at 1 extra tick every 4 flame jets averagely. Also, your burning duration stacks with other player’s burning duration. On paper.
In practice, it may indeed not be that practical.

GW2 is Fun-Centric, not Reward-Centric

But GW2 does not reflect this at high level. If its just about fun at not rewards why are there all these hugely expensive items in game. How much fun is it to try to earn huge ammounts of money, tokens, karma for end game items.

Sure it does. It’s only “not fun” if you’re trying to get the rewards by doing things you would rather not do. They’re fun if they are bonuses you get for doing content you’d be doing anyway for the fun of it. IOW, if you look at legendary gear in a reward-centric manner (doing content for the purpose of getting the reward), they aren’t fun to try and get. If you look at legendary gear from the fun-centric point of view, that you would be doing the content anyway because you find it to be fun (dungeons, for example), then Legendary gear is just a fun bonus for doing what you enjoy anyway.

It’s like telling people to kill 1 million rats for fun and get a legendary weapon as a secondary bonus. And to add salt to wound you continue to suggest not to get legendary weapon if killing 1 million rats is not fun for you.
See how this logic fails?

@FROGJON.3094
aye that is my point, the guy who posted warrior and engineer rifle skills need to change was dead on. Plus the warrior does not need to trait for the 1200 range. the only class with no melee defence has too

pistol/shield + flamethower kit (condition dmg build)
Shield 4, flamethrower 3, bomb kit toolbelt blows enemies away
Shield 5 blocks and stuns
flamethrower 5 aoe blinds around you at melee range
pistol 3 blinds
elixir s invulnerables you for a short duration

rifle/grenade (power build)
rifle 2, net turret toolbelt, net turret immobilizes your foe
rifle 4, bombkit toolbelt blows your foe away
rifle 4, rocket boots pushes your self away
grenade 3 blinds your foe
grenade 4 chills your foe
rinse repeat and you can kite infinitely.

What are you talking about? Are we playing the same game?

Are you tired of struggling with your Engineer and their myriad abilities?

Hey Tarzan, I have to agree with a lot of what you said. At the end of my post I mentioned how I PvE 90 percent of the time, and I really enjoy the DPS that pistol/pistol brings to a group as well as the nice uptime on the group buff elixir b.

Eventually after a month or so I think I’ll try to focus on more PvP but right now I want to complete all dungeon paths first. When I switch to PvP i have to say that Pistol/Shield looks really enticing with 30 in inventions, 30 in alchemy, and 10 in tools for speedy gadgets maybe.

Recalling my sPVP last night. I just joined a random game, ran out and saw one of my teammates downned on the ground with 2 guys stomping on him. Immediately rushed to them and blast both away with shield 4. Pumped on one guy, while another guy retry to stomp my downed mate. shield 5 double daze on that stomping guy while continuing pumping on that extra guy. Bringing in my flamethrower #3 pushing them from a third stomp (yeah, they are kinda noob its obvious isn’t it) and finishing both off finally.
Point is the shield brings so much dynamic that the offhand pistol can’t match.

For solo runs at lower level, p/p can be a stable dps build. But the shield brings so much more dynamic to the class that many engineers overlooked.
shield #4 is a projectile reflect as well as a blast finisher that can push enemies away. See a ranged mob, use 4. A melee mob at close range, use 4. Want some extra heals, use healing mist + 4, (or generally 4 on any water field). Want some extra AOE mights, use fire field from flamethrower +4.
You get so much dynamic from one single skill alone.

And shield 5 blocks all attacks ranged and melee for its duration, with a 2 hit daze to boot.

But again, I’d only recommend running with shield only when you got a feel of how an Engineer works.

I need to add one thing. How can anyone not getting perma-swiftness boon via 10 points in Tools for Speedy Kits. But since yours is a starter guide for Engineer wannabes that doesn’t use any kits, understandable. But its something new players might wanna keep an eye out for once you get a feel of your Engineer.

Happy playing

For all those who still insist that the dungeons in GW2 is fun-centric and should not be reward-centric, then I’d propose that Anet should just remove all sorts of drops, tokens, gold, whatsoever in it and make it purely for people who think they can have so much fun doing it.

Common sense dictate that a plethora of players will whine and leave running dungeons altogether, and Anet can start working (or reworking) dungeon from there to make it so fun, people truly do it for the sake of fun; like how we do PVP just for the sake of fun.

Of course, common sense also dictates if they just balance the rewards system, it’d satisfied more player base and mindset than the 1st proposal.

(or maybe just have 1 or 2 zero reward dungeons and test to see if your fun-centric philosophy is truly workable; you’d know immediately if any one runs it at all. and then we can do away with rewards in all dungeons!)
