Yes! This was an amazing experience. I’m glad that so many people said the same thing… it’s nice to know that when they finally did knock the ball out of the park, there were so many people who felt the same way I did. That Durmand Priory room was so fantastic. I mean… I’ve replayed that mission JUST to walk through that room and read everything. It was great! And then glint’s lair….. it reminded me of, well I don’t know if anybody else played this, but in FFXI when you finally got to SEA, the land of the gods and that game’s unbeatable boss, Absolute Virtue.
Thanks ANET! That was a great experience. I’m sure it’s tough because you guys want to create your own game in GW2, but when you go back to GW1 like that, it reminds me why I picked GW2 in the first place. Thanks a ton.
I like the lack of waypoints too. It makes the area feel more risky to explore, knowing if you get somewhere and die you’ll have to start over. My only real concern is, how will the area be once it’s not the newest area of the game anymore? I’d probably never go to cursed shore if it had one waypoint and those game mechanics, but as it is, I farm there alot.
I guess when there’s new stuff, that will be where everybody goes, so it won’t really matter because we’ll have new stuff to do. It’s just a thought.

One of my vortexes keeps spawning behind a wall… literally just wasted an hour trying to kill the boss without using it, only to have it regen on me. It’s amazing how the story was so good, and I was loving it so much, and it just turned into the worst experience ever because of that vortex behind the wall. Sooooooo frustrating!!!!!!
I always imagined that the devs are sitting around a round mahogany table in red robes on patch day, counting the number of times people ask “when’s the patch hitting” on the forums…… when a specific number hits, they stand up, walk over to the main server, and each of them turn a key at the same time to release the patch.
It’s probably not like that though.

There have been studies done regarding how reward structures effect player motivations. Surprisingly, if you offer one group of people a reward of either $1 or $2 for a task, and a second group of people are guaranteed a reward of $2 for the same task, there will actually be more motivation in the first group to complete the task repeatedly for a longer amount of time.
That being said, I think that when you simplify the problem with gw2’s reward structure, what you’ve got is people earning either $0, $1, or $2. My theory is that you would motivate people more if you combined the current structure with a guaranteed reward over time…. I’m just brainstorming here, but imagine each monster killed drops a token, and there is a vendor who offers valuable items specifically for 500,1000,2500, etc. tokens. However, you’ve discussed your hesitation to add new currencies to the game, which I think is fantastic. So, maybe you could have each set of 250 tokens be tradeable with a vendor for 1 laurel or something. Then their value is completely dependent on the value of the Laurels you can trade them for, and that’s it. Laurels are very valuable because there aren’t very many ways to get them and the supply over time is limited to dailies and monthlies, which makes them somewhat tedious to get as it is, so that would solve two problems with the current reward structure by adding a new route to obtain laurels, and reward people evenly with small things over time without changing your core reward structure.

Yeah, I remember that actually. See here’s the thing… they really have no interest in telling us anything that we want to know. At some point, either Mike O’Brien, or the powers that be, or the leader of the customer communication team, or whoever, decided that ANET as a company was not going to tell us anything outside of deliberate, controlled, uniform statements. They decided this most likely because of how people act on the forums. Why they didn’t just shut the forums down and keep the site up with news, support, and wiki only is somewhat strange to me. The only thing that would have changed is that people would have copy/pasted the news items on another site and a conversation would have taken place about them there, where the dev’s rules would have had no importance anymore. People could have argued amongst themselves, and that would have been that.
Now, that being said, by keeping the site up and continually reminding us of the rules and their previous responses to inquiries, they are also in a sense “blaming” us for forcing this decision by reminding us continually of our less-than-pure past. Maybe we deserve that blame. Maybe as a group we made them feel badly about things, and their response was this. Maybe we were the cause of the effect. I’d argue against that because I’ve followed this game from it’s announcement and they sold us the moon and the stars in those early days, but it doesn’t really matter.
Who knows? At any rate, we could push the blame back and forth. We could argue it out forever. The fact remains, they do not want to communicate openly with us. They have provided the CDI as an outlet and an organizational tool to control the conversation in such a way that maybe we’ll get something out of it… or maybe not. It depends somewhat on their goals for this forum and for the game in general, which aren’t something they’ll speak to us about. I think about the fact that they keep the forums up a great deal. After all, they are not entirely required to exist. I’ve actually never played an MMO with an official forum before, so this was a somewhat new experience for me. I thought at first that it would be really cool to actually interact with the devs of the game…. until it became more like interacting with my employer’s HR department. And now that’s exactly what it feels like. They know the rules because they’re the ones writing them, they’ll tell you the rules you should live by, but they won’t tell you whether anything you want will actually happen at all. But hey! So the question in my mind, is if they don’t want to communicate openly with us, why keep the forums up at all? Is it so that they can keep tabs on people’s complaints? Is it because they know that this way a great many of the complaints will be focused on a forum that they are in charge of, versus other forums they are not, like Reddit, or Guildwars2guru, or whatever? Is it because they actually care about us underneath it all, and are waiting for the right time and/or inspiration to begin moving in some type of direction? The new CDI on guild halls is an amazing thread. It is a very exciting read, of course if you are assuming by reading it that they create guild halls, which they are quick to point out has not been promised by any means. After all… it’s just a conversation. A conversation with people’s hopes and dreams for this game pinned to it, without a single guarantee from ANET that any of it will happen. Because…. I mean….. what if it fails? What if they can’t? What if it’s not possible? They seem to be a company driven by fear. That’s the reason for their lack of transparency, their lack of communication, their lack of direction. That is their driving force.
Fear.

Can you give me a few examples, where players would really like to know everything, but where there is a level of disclosure that meets the basic info request?
I can do that…
Let’s think of a few examples, and a general window of expectation. Say… three months? That’s a long period of time in MMO years. What I personally would like, is if you told us the “what”, with a vague “when”, potentially followed up with a “why not” if it fails to be implemented. The “why not”s I’m about to list are imaginary, but I feel that it’s necessary to follow up with the player base so we know that you are making decisions based on some semblance of reason, vs. anything else our imaginations can conjure that would create the failure of the “what”.
Example 1: Precursor Crafting
The What: We are introducing a method of crafting precurors.
The When: It should be done in 6-8 months.
The Why Not: We haven’t figured out a way to do it without throwing our entire game economy into chaos.
In this example, we never got the “why not”… which ideally should occurred and have been followed up by a new “when”.
Example 2: Guild Halls
The What: Implementing Guild Halls
The When: 9-12 months
The Why Not: We need to decide if we want to devote the necessary resources, because designing this is going to be a kitten.
Note – In this example, we got the CDI. The CDI itself is great, however without future of implementation of Guild Halls it will leave the player population filled with mistrust of all future CDI initiatives. It’s great and all that you’ve covered your tushies by shouting to the highest heavens that “WE PROMISE NOTHING”, but It’s sort of a “fool me once, etc.” situation.
Example 3:
The What: New PVP Maps and Game Modes
The When: New map every 6 months, New Game Mode once per year
The Why Not: Like 40 people out of 3 million play PvP, so we’re devoting our resources to other things.
Note- In this example, my “why not” is obviously something that would need to be sugar coated to the player population.
Example 4:
The What: New open Areas of the game (I.E.- Northern Shiverpeaks, Cantha, etc)
The When: We’re going to open a new region once every 5-8 months
The Why Not: We are afraid to waste the opening of a new region, in case we decide to do an expansion at some point in the unforseen imaginings of the lead developer’s mind, and need box sales

I feel like when you’re in a “kitten ed if you do, kitten ed if you don’t” situation like ANET is, it’s not so much important which way you choose to present information, as it is important to OWN the way you do it. MAKE it the right choice.
To expound on that a bit, they’re in a situation where they want to keep the player base happy, however they do not want to tell us anything that may raise our expectations higher than what they can ultimately produce, which will lead to a negative effect on player morale. So the ultimate solution is, choose a path and DO IT WELL. If your solution is to tell us nothing, tell us nothing. But do it in a constructive way.
For Example: If someone is asking you “when are we going to a new freaking area of the world omg it’s been two years and you’ve only opened up two new zones”
Answer with: “well, we’re working on the new CDI for guild halls right now, we’re just finishing up the new WvW season, we’ve got the living world and halloween events ramping up in the next couple of weeks, and we’re going to potentially be looking at new PvP maps in the next CDI (or whatever the case may be), so… we’ve got alot going on right now and who knows where living world will take us next! ”
DON"T include the phrases:

ANY OTHER PHRASE THAT INDICATES YOU KNOW SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO SHARE. Even more specifically, you should never be evasive with an answer while using the words “can’t, not, won’t, without, shouldn’t, nothing, etc.” The way to effectively evade a negative with a customer is by using only positive words, including a laugh, smile, or winking emote, or other manipulative crap like that. I know that computer guys aren’t the best customer service people, but it’s a new world. You gotta step up your game if you’re going to get involved with the customers. You know who was amazing at that, was the former host of POI who just quit. She may have had various intangibles (for example, she was a hot gamer chick), but she also knew how to FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE AT ALL TIMES WHEN DEALING WITH THE CUSTOMER and… alternatively…. AVOIDING THE NEGATIVE AT ALL COSTS DURING HER INTERACTIONS WITH THEM.
Here’s the biggest hint of them all: If you can get your customer to laugh, you’ve won. It’s that simple.
Also, I’d like to say that I do realize capslock for emphasis is a touch belligerant… but c’mon. Learn to customer service.

Actually… you know what would be really cool, would be to put a graveyard in the new guild halls they’re talking about in the CDI currently. Maybe we could name the graves and such… could be funny or sincere, depending on the guild!

I’m actually ok with the phrase “maybe it’s not for you.” It’s not like you’re implying that they should leave, it’s a good response to excessive negativity in any walk of life. Hate your job and complain endlessly about it? It might not be for you. Hate your car? Maybe there’s a better one out there. So on and so forth. It might sound somewhat condescending, but it’s all in how it’s received, and it instigates a thought process in the person complaining that allows for two options…. one being that you look at the positives about the game, continue playing, and stop complaining….. the other being that you go try to enjoy something else.
People find the need to focus excessive energy into an MMO from time to time. It’s natural, but that negativity is coming from a root cause inside the person feeling it. There are solutions to that cause, and continuing to follow the same path you’re currently walking is not one of them. “Maybe it’s not for you” is a suggestion that the problem might be coming from something else.
Point is, misery loves company. Some people just don’t like to hear endless complaints about something they enjoy, because it dampens their ability to enjoy those things. It’s condescending, but we’ve all been there. Sure, we could all sit around and complain endlessly into oblivion. But when it’s a hobby or entertainment format that you’re talking about, there’s no real necessity to take part in it. Go outside, do some stretching and breathing exercises, get away from the computer. It’s not healthy to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time. It creates stress and negative compression on many of the vital organs in your body. We all know this. “maybe it’s not for you” is just code for “take a break, dude. The game will be here when you get back.”
I feel like this topic has been beaten to death, but for some reason I’m wanting to contribute. GW2 feels to me like a game that released too early, because the market had a pretty big gap between new MMO’s and they wanted to capitalize on that fact. They made a really easy, fun, and great MMO. It’s really player-friendly, and the devs all seem to be cool as hell people beneath all of the “god of our chosen MMO universe” demeanor. Which is rare. If any of you guys ever played FFXI you know what I mean… those monsters wanted to addict their players to keep a monthly fee going. It was a borderline evil business model that they ran for quite a few years, and GW2 is the opposite of that in so many ways that it still amazes me. But I digress. The problem with GW2’s development IMO became that they had to fix alot of shortcomings in order to have a solid foundation to build upon. Now that the foundation is getting to be complete, I’d hope to see some of the content that a game typically would get in it’s first few years. It just took us a while to get here.
Now… the problem for me is that this is the same post I made a year or so ago in response to the same type of complaint, and here we are two years after release discussing it all over again. GW2 is a great game, with great potential. I love it like no other. But yeah….. it’s time for some of these things to start happening. Dry Top is a great map. Now we just need about 10 more of them! EoTM was a great step forward for WvW. Now we need about 10 more of them! PvP getting a unique armor skin was a great step forward. Now we need about 10 more unique armor sets in each game type! The Living Story has really stepped it up a notch this season. Now we need it to step up about 10 more notches! And on and on. I could complain about GW2’s development for about as long as I could rave about the game itself.
Let’s just be happy they’re finally looking into Guild Halls!!!!

Hmm… ruin things, you say? I don’t know if these would ruin them necessarily, but it would be fun to find out.
1. I’d give every account a reward chest with a precursor of their choice in it.
That way, everybody who wanted to work on a legendary could have 1 chance to get their precursor out of the way. For everybody else, you’d have a chance to sell one and get some gold. After some time, the market would balance back to normal-ish levels, and everyone would be happy. Maybe. I personally would be thrilled and love the game more than ever.
2. I’d give every account a chest with the choice between an infinite bank golem, an infinite hair changer, or an infinite revive orb or something.
See above for reasoning. Also, I know that they are super rare income generators for ANET, but you’d have to figure at this point they’re not making much off them anymore. Anybody crazy enough to pay for one (or the black lion chests to get one) has already done so and they could then make some money off the TP, and the rest of us would be thrilled to get one.
3. I’d make bloodstone dust sellable at NPCs.
I have 15 stacks or so of that stuff sitting in inventory, just taking up space. With ANET’s habit of going back and changing things to make them worthwhile, I can’t bring myself to just toss them! Why not make them sellable.
4. Open SUPER ADVENTURE BOX permanently.
Not sure why people love this as much as they do. I mean….. don’t get me wrong! It was awesome, and funny, and fun all at the same time. The replayability on it was kind of small to me though. I can understand why it might fit in the category of “temporary content.” BUT…… I’m also not sure why you’d ever take something away from your playerbase when it’s content that they loved, in a game where lack of content is a common complaint. Just sayin’.

I started back in ffxi…. maybe because its a Japanese MMO, I never saw the word toon used until GW2. The first time I saw it used, it made me cringe a little bit, and it still does to some degree. Its probably similar to “lol” for some people. I use it all the time because sarcasm comes across so rough in text, but I know a lot of guys my age think of it as teenie-bopper text speak. Its a matter of taste I guess.

Well…huh. That’s a weird post. On some level I guess I can accept the concept that the vocal group of people on forums would not include those who quit the game. But isn’t this akin to using exit interviews at a job site to determine future courses of action? I mean……. gah. There’s a reason you don’t do that. Those people chose to leave. Their opinions have value, but its below the value of those who support you and stick around. If you go after the black sheep you might get him back, but you’ll probably kitten off everybody else in the process.

I actually made about 10g on bags from a level 80 mission… it happened twice. I think the rewards are scripted to occur every other mission at level 80 near the end of personal story.
Not saying that at all… what I’m saying is that using information gained publicly to attempt to gain an advantage is different from insider trading. And you’re right about the price having peaked before I jumped on the bandwagon… I just thought it would continue to rise. Hindsight, 20/20, all that.
I watched one of the videos and thought to myself, I better buy some of those items for my collections before they skyrocket in price after the patch hits. So I bought a couple of the exotics, Eternal Ice & Breath of Kralkatorrik specifically, and they’re now all much cheaper than when I bought them pre-patch. Like… less than half what I payed for them. I lost probably 50 gold total so far, and each time i check the price, they keep going down. If ANET came out and said this was against the terms of service, I’d never do it again because the gains aren’t worth risking your account over… and probably be much happier in the long run anyway because I wouldn’t be regretting my decision.
Insider trading is illegal in the stock market because you know what will happen ahead of time, and you’re using knowledge not available to the public to commit an act that is completely illegal. Watching a video posted on a public website and guessing what will happen to the future value of items is a risk. There’s a big difference.

I’m a vet player, having started up during headstart, and I love the changes. I don’t know if this is normal, but I’ve got 4 80’s, 3 of them with world map completion. At this point, when I level a new alt, I run EOTM until I hit 80, grabbing boss events along the way. I have no care either way concerning the changes they made to the leveling process. After leveling up 3 characters in the open world, I really just don’t care if they change things because it’s kind of stale at this point.
Now with the addition of the new personal story rewards, I may even go back and replay the story just to see what kind of rewards they have. I never would have done that otherwise.
From reading the post, you reeeeeally get the feeling that they worked hard making those changes.
Looks great! I’m not a mini person myself, but I think a big reason why I didn’t like them was they didn’t have an equip slot.
I’m pretty happy for the most part. I think my biggest hangup currently is, you know gw2 has made a ton of money, but they haven’t put features in the game yet that people are clamoring for. If this is such a tough game to design content for, they should probably hire some more people or something…. and you’ve got people like Kate Welch leaving, who with the poi broadcasts was actually entertaining to listen to, and did a great job of getting the devs involved in something that appeared outside of their comfort zone while filming. That stuff paired with their unwillingness to discuss what they’re working on has people freaking out.
You’ve gotta figure that a game as popular as gw2 will eventually get its content…. its just that people are ready for it now. Lack of a sub fee gives the devs a little more leverage against its player base because they can afford to stall. In a way it sucks, but the lack of a sub is why people play the game in the first place, so its a case of eating your cake and wanting it too.

I guess if it makes you feel better, the title of the segment “fresh start” indicated that they were going to fix some lowbie things up. If you’re feeling like you’re missing out because you’re done with the early content, that probably just means they did a good job upgrading it!
1. Housing (guild halls or personal housing)
2. New PvP modes (slayer, team slayer, etc.)
3. Update to the Legendary Tier (Legendary Armor, craftable precursors, Legendary Trinkets that display on your character model, Backstory on lore to add a legend to the legendaries, legendary racial features like glowing or florescent tattoos for Norn, visible glowing brain for Asura, …… you know. stuff like that)

Thanks for taking the time to think this through. To be honest my first thought was “if it’s going to follow the same old non-disclosure rules, it’s pointless”.
However, after thinking about it, I think you’re on to something here. It would be really amazing to have a roadmap, as long as it was updated on a somewhat consistent basis. There are alot of really dedicated players out there who would ultimately just like to know where the game is headed. I know I personally would check it daily for updates, and it would be sooo nice to get consistent news of what’s coming in the future.
If this is the way we can make that happen, I’m personally all for it! Cheers, and good luck with your endeavors. If you ever find yourself upset with the community, just keep in mind that we all have the same goal… a great GW2 experience.

I think there’s a disconnect between what content we get, and what content players feel they should be getting. If you’re asking the question “has there been content?” then the answer is, of course, yes.
If you’re asking “does the scope of the content we’ve received match what we received in GW1?” then the answer is very far from yes.
I don’t think anyone is really arguing that we haven’t been given content, but given that Anet is four times the size they were when they made GW1 and working on a larger budget game, they’ve introduced an incredibly tiny fraction of what we received in GW1 in the same time frame. That means skills, weapons, explorable areas, classes, dungeons, hard mode, etc. Living Story has, so far, failed to introduce this entirely, or on a scale that matches GW1. The game is also still missing features which should have been present at launch, like Guild Halls and GvG.
Nobody is really disputing that Anet has released content. It just doesn’t nearly match the scope of GW1.
Yeah this sums it up pretty well. I personally love GW2, but am sad about a great many things at the same time.
For example…. I absolutely LOVE WvW and being a part of a guild that works together towards victory there, but the fact that there are no guild halls makes me want to throw my computer against the wall. It’s this love/hate combo that drives alot of people’s comments on this forum. Add the dev’s inability to describe what they’re planning to us in any capacity, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a perpetual problem.
It’s funny you bring that up, because they’ve just had some serious talks about it.

I’m running into a bug on the second platform. Trahearne gets stuck after the fight, just says that we’re done here and meet him back in fort trinity.
I always felt like the concept of “play how you want” was a design goal that they set for themselves, not a promise to players. When you look at certain things like how dailies & monthlies are obtained, the removal of glory as a currency before the addition of PVP-exclusive gear, the fact that PvP doesn’t require a level 80 character with equipment obtained in PvE… you know, the list could go on for quite a while.
They did design many facets of the game around the concept of playing how you want to get what you want. It could still be improved upon in certain ways, but it feels like a “friendly” MMO in may ways. Obviously, precursor crafting needs to happen, and maybe a little more focus on WvW and PvP exclusive armor instead of the new stuff always going in the gem shop, but they’re doing a good job of allowing players to focus on the content they want without being limited by a power creep. It’s a pretty good balance overall.
I find myself agreeing with many of these points to some degree… except for the lfg tool criticism. That thing is about as simple and flawless as I can imagine.
Just imagine if Mordremoth destroys all the wp’s….. then this thing will have some value.
The open world events were buggy and more like fetch quests, but I like how they brought Eir and Rytlock into it, and touched on the searing and the ghosts. That was great! They really needed to get those characters involved again and revisit some of the old lore. I love the concept of Rytlock wanting to put the ghosts to rest and all that comes after. I tried so hard to jump in that kitten hole with him!
At any rate, it was all setup for the finale.
Maybe the writers just realized they had too many characters in development simultaneously. Stephen King, one of the greatest and most beloved writers of all time, admitted once that when he was writing “The Stand” he realized about mid-way through that he had waaaay too many characters, so he killed half of them off in an explosion. It was a pretty emotional part of the book, and one that really shaped the course of events… but ultimately he had started too many plotlines and had to do something quickly to “trim the fat” so to speak.

I agree with the OP, but for different reasons. The sylvari are the only race not represented in our current band of heroes. Let him join the group, and then show us why he’s such a hero. Either that, or let the other characters in the group feel similarly to him as we do… that could be entertaining.
They could always martyr him off, too. Either way, get ready for some salad with the meat and potatoes of the new LS…. and god help Anet if trahearne sucks again. The uproar will be legendary!

Crazy thing is, ffxi came out 11 years ago, and it had housing to an extent. At least you had a room you could decorate and organize, with rewards from things you did in the game displayed on walls and such.
11 years ago. You’d think that housing wouldn’t even be a question in a game at this point.
I wish I could just copy/paste my response to this in every housing thread in case a dev reads one of these some day. Housing would be a great addition to this game. The problem I’m running into in the game is, I’m out of things to work on. My gear is all maxed out, and I have a character profession and look I like. Other than farming a legendary or playing a couple days a week to keep up with the LS, it would be awesome to have a house to work on. Plus, it would be a good reason to do other events or craftables, if rewards were tied in to other things.
Also, I’d totally buy yard space, house floors or rooms, and decorations in the cash
shop. Hmmmm…. maybe this wouldn’t be a good idea after all. xD

how about an event notification toggle… sort of like the achievement one in the top right? then you could turn it off if you’re working on something else. otherwise it could be a nuisance.
I actually like the way they are using the wp’s in the LS. My first thought was “OMG mounts”, like many other peoples. It would be kind of cool if they removed them to some extent. It would totally change the way we have to play, and would make alts, bank and tp items, and travel speed buffs instantly more valuable than their current negligible state. Not to mention its somewhat immersion breaking when you’re just popping all over the world hitting events for chests. I don’t feel like that’s the game they wanted to create on the PVE side, where people are just event jumping at level 80. Its just a different form of champ farming.
There would be a ton of backlash if they didn’t create alternative methods of travel though. People have become accustomed to them and the ease of travel they provide.
I’d prefer if more new skins were account bound, personally. Our TP is totally manipulated by the rich players, so its nice when ANET forces players to actually play the game to get things. I’m surprised they did it this early in season 2 though. Usually they save that for the “big reward” at the end of something, like the WvW chest or the helm from defeating Scarlett.

yeah this is a great idea. I’ve bought a couple of those, but won’t buy another one. Its cool to make a little change once in a while, but inevitably you just want to change it again and again.
Its a pretty easy game for the most part. I’ve got two level 80 warriors and I haven’t touched them in months. My reasoning is the mobility of thieves. Essentially at 80 in PVE, you can kill anything solo. So why fight anything unless you’re farming? I love going into stealth and getting out of unnecessary encounters. In wvw, its all a numbers game. The size of your group determines who wins a good majority of the time, and my survivability skyrocketed in zergs after I switched from warrior to thief. In PvP maybe I sucked, but I felt like I had a massive target on my back as warrior. Once again, when I got decent at thief I found it much easier to win fights and escape outnumbered scenarios.
So for me personally, the question became, why use my warriors for anything?
