I always liked Gunnar’s Hold. It’s a simple area, far away from the well-worn cities and towns. Gunnar’s Hold felt like the place a true adventurer would love to spend some time. I found myself there time and again… it became a sort of home for me in the game. Hopefully it’s still around in some form or another!

This link is amazing. It’s the most useful and supportive resource I’ve found in dealing with MMO addiction, although I don’t think it’s actively updated anymore. Interestingly enough, GW2’s game design is probably the best MMO ever conceived, in terms of how easy it is to walk away from.

Colin told MattVisual that they were going to do it at some point in the future. The interview is on his youtube page I believe… nothing really set in stone. He said that they don’t want to just throw something together to get it in the game, rather take their time and get it right. It’s an admirable stance, if it’s not just him blowing us off in his smooth-talking way!

I feel like the dialogue is a step up, which suggests a better storyline to come. I actually laughed out loud at the “great, I’m a unit of measurement” line, which is something that hasn’t happened to me in forever in a game.

I like the map, too. Its really well done. I almost feel like the aspects aren’t quite as fun to use here, but maybe that’s just familiarity talking. Anybody know when the next release is? They’re not still doing the 2 week thing, are they?

I won’t be quitting right away, personally. I really didn’t enjoy season one and quit for a few months. It took awhile but I realized its tough to beat a FTP mmo that’s fun to play. If you’re hoping season 2 is amazing and revitalizes your love for the game, well so do I. I wouldn’t be surprised if it took awhile to get rolling though. Hopefully its great!! I’m addicted to the idea of housing.

As a person addicted to the idea of housing, I realize that it is a complicated thing to bring into a game. For every idea I have, there’s a counter-argument in my own head. Here’s how I see them potentially bringing housing into the game and having it make sense…….

Start with guild halls. It’s something from GW1 that people loved. It could also be a starting point for future content creation.

Then, have individual homes for people to access within their guild. I’m imagining it as an instanced room, although it would be amazing if you could design it otherwise, so your guildies could check out your area.

Within those rooms, you could collect trophies that represent your in-game accomplishments. I’d personally like to see decorative options, rewards from seasonal events, mannequins that you could display armor skins on, wall art, different areas of the house with add ons for a variety of activities such as crafting, living space for NPC family members, cool stuff like that.

You could then make each event of the game more than the current skin/achievement hunt. You could add trophies, rare decorative drops, all sorts of things. The possibilities are truly endless with what they could do, and it could be fun as hell. My imagination goes wild conjuring up the different avenues they could branch off into from this starting point. Could you imagine having an armor rack with different skins you’ve collected on it? Or one of Zhaitan’s heads mounted on your wall over your fireplace after you completed the main story? How about, Scarlett’s Rifle on a wall display?

That’s just how I like to imagine it could be done in an innovative and efficient way. As it stands, the game has alot going for it, but once you’re settled in with an 80 character you like with an appearance you like, there’s not a whole lot else to do progression-wise. Housing would supply that, at least for me. It would be a huge plus. I guess the dream would be a town where you could literally build your own house and “live” in a neighborhood with other players, but I’d be happy with a manipulatable room at this point.

I would truly love housing in GW2. I feel like that is the one thing I’m really missing about this game versus others I’ve played. The game world just feels so vacant and meaningless without a place to call home.

Hopefully they’ll put it in! It must still be on the table, or they would have shot our dreams down by now. No reason for meaningless speculation about something that will never happen, unless they’re so cold hearted that they think it’s better to let us have our hope so that we don’t quit playing or something.

I think US employers can get away with a lot, but there are rules for sure. That’s not the point though…. nobody thinks that our devs should be forced to work more. In this economy though, they could easily find some people willing to work nights/weekends if its a staffing issue. MMO’s are like working in healthcare…. hospitals never close syoure always working at odd times. I’m on my lunch break right now, and its 5am here. Comes with the territory.

So the solution is basically to hire more people? With which money?

And even if they had the money it would still take quite some time for them to learn the code and the systems used so they would be unable to do those night/weekend shifts for a rather long time anyway.

I thought this was the fastest selling MMO of all time.

I’d love to be spending time with my family too, but using it as an excuse is either bad customer service or indicative of a bad staffing model. Its an MMO company ….. not a 9 to 5. Something is fundamentally wrong with the way this situation is progressing.

Sure, you could reduce it to “stupid players want their shiny so they whine”. But its more than that. Could you imagine in any sport, them forgetting to bring the trophy at the end? Imagine they forgot the Stanley Cup, so the players couldn’t skate around with it. Can you see that dude with the white gloves being like, “sorry guys, I really thought the hawks were going to win again, so I just left it in Chicago. I mean… what’s the big deal, right? Its just a stupid metal object. I’ll pick it up on Monday and have it shipped out to LA. Im spending some time quality time with the kids this weekend. I think the main reason for the griping is, we’re all tired of this game’s problems. No one expects the devs to neglect their families or their lives, but is that really the trade off? Because if our devs had to choose between spending time with their families or fixing a chest bug, and the only way it was getting fixed was if they chose the latter, this game’s management should be ashamed of themselves. People can tell when they’re getting screwed with, and the number of bug fixes that have taken place that directly correspond to money coming in for ANET show where their priorities are.

That all being said, I do think we’re too tough on the devs. They work hard and have created amazing things for us, and I’m quite sure they have a lot of rules to live by that we will never understand. Its a shame that so many of my friends have left the game (all of them)… I feel the best is yet to come. But these types of things are the reason they left. ANET’s higher ups need to get their heads out of their kitten and throw some resources at this game, apparently.

Hell, I’ll still loiter in LA sometimes when I feel like it. People who enjoy map chat aren’t going to suddenly find themselves in a empty wasteland. I love the idea of player housing so much. Trophies are such an integral part of the mmo experience for me. The biggest problem I find with not having them is, although you’ve got equipment and weapons to provide that “I was there” type of thing, you can only equip a certain amount of skins at a time. As time goes on, the number of skins as rewards will increase, but the amount you can actually display remain the same. Housing with different types of reward displays would provide a huge incentive for me to continue playing the game.

I mean, after all…. there are no statistical rewards in GW2. All progress is measured and rewarded in ways that don’t make your character stronger. Who needs another backpack at this point? Who doesn’t have a weapon skin for their character that they’re pleased with? GW2 is starving for that tertiary layer of rewards, and housing would be perfect.

Ticket reward ratios quandary

Tagus Eleuthera.7305

Greetings friends,

So… I’ve been doing a bit of thinking, while doing a bit of drinking. Always a good combination, as any Norn will tell you. There is something that I’ve been attempting to make some sense of. I suppose, therefore, that an internet thread is the proper course of action in an attempt to put to rest my feelings of unease?

Here’s the thing… the variations in these ticket rewards are nonsensical. I could understand if the 300 ticket benchmark was received by the top 5 servers or something… but to separate it by divisions and go numerically down those divisions, it seems so bizarre to me. There is no popular sport that rewards those who finish first in division 2 and 3 the same as those first in division 1 receive. There is no popular sport where it would be possible for a 10th ranked team to be rewarded better than a 2nd through 9th ranked team.

Now…as the 18th ranked team SoR… I received the lowest possible reward… much lower than those received by the 19th and lower rankings with the exception of the lowest. On SoR, as many know, there was a mass exodus of guilds before season 2 began, and a former top 3 server fell quite low. Is it because I got “screwed” by this mass exodus because I remained loyal to my SoR brethren that I now feel this way in regards to the rewards? Or is it because the system is of terrible design? Perhaps it is through some sort of internal entitlement that the source of my problem exists, and I should seek to become a more enlightened person?

Please help me, O my brothers.

3 big economy problems

Tagus Eleuthera.7305

I like that the OP is willing to put themselves out there and voice an opinion. I don’t agree with all of it though.

Concerning number 1…. I totally agree. I feel like the balance of buying gems and changing them into gold FAR outweighs the balance of time spent farming for gold. I know ANET needs their cash shop money, but its weighted far to heavily towards buying gems in my opinion. I almost feel like it removes motivation to play the game, when you know you could just work an hour of overtime, buy gems, and not have to play for two weeks and still come out ahead. The inevitable thought progression leads to the question of… why do I play at all?

Regarding tp players… they’re always going to exist. In life its important to focus on what you can control and not worry about the rest… designing an mmo is the same deal.

3. Yeah….. I disagree with 3. Its not an exploit unless the path seller is exploiting the game design to finish the path. Dungeons in this game are pretty easy. If somebody wants to plop down 5 gold to be ran through an easy dungeon versus actually playing through it, and a seller wants to mindlessly repeat content, its a combination of mindsets that isn’t capable of perpetuating itself in the long term. This is because player A only needs the dungeon once, and player B is going to quit running dungeons when they hit their financial goal. Its a victimless scenario with a life expectancy… and no realistic solution.

Item Prestige: Not being respected?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tagus Eleuthera.7305

Tagus Eleuthera.7305

Yeah, they started diminishing the prestige of items towards the end of gw1, when they made those masks available years after the events were over. For some reason they’ve continued to do that in GW2. There’s essentially no limited items that won’t pop up again. Its almost like they don’t want to exclude new players from anything, at the expense of their longtime customer base. Its an odd approach, that’s for sure.

Tagus Eleuthera.7305

I’d just like an update on guild halls and player housing from the devs. Obviously its something people care about, because it keeps coming up. The current situation seems to be one where they’ve got little to lose in making a statement. You figure, there’s three groups of people. Those who want them, those who don’t, and those who don’t care. If they make an announcement whether yes or no… who’s really going to get upset? Nobody is going to quit playing over it either way at this point… and then we can just stop speculating. Its annoying that we still don’t know what’s up with it, and we’re speculating from non-specific soundbites that are a year or two old.

What is the Fascination with housing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tagus Eleuthera.7305

Tagus Eleuthera.7305

Player Housing is alot of fun in MMO’s. It provides an added layer of realism to the game, gives actual meaning to accomplishments through trophies and other collectibles (other than a generic achievement point tally), and as others have said, gives you something to do other than killing things. It also provides another layer of immersion onto the experience of the game. Those reasons, among others, are probably why almost every MMO to come out in the past decade have had some level of player housing. Even many console rpg games have player housing now.

What’s not to like? If it’s not your thing, there’s no crime in that. But for those of us who really enjoy it, the fact that it’s missing from GW2 is a glaring problem that never really seems to disappear as we’re playing the game.

An End to the Queensdale Train

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Tagus Eleuthera.7305

Tagus Eleuthera.7305

The thing is, GW2 have created a game where we’re encouraged to work together. It’s really a wonderful experience, but it encourages zerg play. You take the good with the bad.

And yes, you’re trolling the train if you’re deliberately messing up the rotation by killing bosses when they’re somewhere else in the map. There’s no rule against it, you can do whatever you want. But it’s kind of silly to do that, and then white knight for the new players at the same time. I’d argue that the majority of new players focus on getting to max level as among their first goals. I know I did, albeit spamming the giant worm and maw events because I started as a Norn. In addition, newbies have a fully functional game that is faaaaar superior to the one we had at launch. I’d say that more than makes up for the missing element of excitement that they might have on the off chance they choose the human race for their first play through and happen upon a cave in the corner of the map, and decide to pick up a random runestone and spawn a boss that then proceeds to beat the living crap out of them.

Just my two cents But yeah…. that chain is not really worth much other than for the monthly boss achievement. People will figure that out eventually on their own.

Hi Anet,

I treat Hoelbrak as a sort of “home base” when I’m playing PvE… so I spend alot of time around the Trade Commons. There’s a character that says the line, “Take heed… I haven’t taken leave of my senses” over and over and over and over and over and over and over into infinity. Sometimes, she even says it so much, that she will begin saying it and cut herself off to start saying it over again in mid sentence.

Maybe I’m being sensitive. That’s possible. I mean… I’ve been hearing this since the beginning of the game, and it only now just became unbearable. But for the love of all things holy, could you PLEASE reduce the frequency that this character speaks? It is totally immersion breaking. Maybe because the line is well written, maybe because it’s a unique phrasing, or maybe a combination causes it to stand apart from anything else whenever I hear it. It’s freaking terrible.

Thanks for your help!!!

I got my first “HS spam moar” yesterday… the guy jumped off a cliff to get away from me, lost about 75% of his health, so I ran down and HS’d once to catch him before downing him.

I was just thinking, can I seriously not even use it to catch somebody running away? I think that people just don’t want to learn how to win… they want to point fingers instead of working on a scheme to fight thieves. I have trouble with good players of all classses, but PvP is a mental game. Only crappy players play the unfairness card… and if you’re jumping down cliffs to avoid a fight in PvP, you already lost.

Its pretty annoying, actually. Is CC unfair because it takes away our mobility? Are condition builds unfair because theyre really powerful and out-perform our close contact damage production? Are traps unfair because they keep us kitten on movement while we get destroyed by a longbow because we’re squishy? God, I could think of a million different ways I’ve gotten killed by different classes consistently. None of them involve RUN AWAY… maybe l2p is really the best, most concise response sometimes.

This is a good example of how bad ANET is at managing their customer’s expectations. They do a lot of things great, but generally if you tell your customers you’re going to do something and don’t do it, you HAVE to apologize and tell them why, and what you’re going to do in the future to get it done. Not just to cater to your customers, mind you, but to give the impression that you’re working on it and you care, even if you’re buried up to your eyeballs in work and couldn’t give two kittens….. because then your customers will be more understanding and will be nicer to you. We’re all interconnected between players and devs, and we all want to be happy… more or less. You’ll get the infrequent wacko causing problems, but you just try not to take them personally and keep fighting the good fight. Or something. I swear, ANET should hire me for customer service, because they’re clueless.

Secondly, I zoned into Orr last night and there were actually 4 different groups of people running around doing events, so I followed a couple of different commanders and it was like the old days. You know when I noticed that the complaints skyrocketed was, when people started to realize how much money they made off the release of this game. People come to GW2 from all walks of life. You’ve gotta realize that goes both ways… there’s alot of idiots out there, but there’s actually some pretty intelligent people as well.

Some of those intelligent people realized… hey! Wait a second. This game set sales records and won awards. It shouldn’t still be bug-ridden. We should have things like player housing and more than 4 or 5 PvP maps. WvW shouldn’t be just a copy/paste of the same map three times. An in-game economy shouldn’t be ruled by the people who realized the precursor crafting glitch in the first few weeks, or got lucky in a 1-off event. I mean… what the heck. This game has financial resources. They should be able to fix things.

And they complained. Remarkably, ANET listened and attempted to fix the problems. Unfortunately that was when the community really began to grow into the drooling, cacophonious monster you see here today, because the less intelligent among us, having seen ANET’s attempt to appease those first angry voices, smelled blood in the water.

And ever since, our community has been a great big ball of crap, trying to fight by any means they can think of to get what they want from the devs.

I don’t know. I’ve come to like empty zones. Some of the bosses can be tough when you’re fighting them with only a few people, which can add a little excitement. However, there are a couple of events that I’ve never done because people don’t show up for them, so that might be nice if the mega server puts enough people together to do them.

I think the only people that will have a hard time are the big guilds who might get split up when a particular zone fills up. In general its surprising how unfriendly this game is designed for large guilds. There’s little content you need a guild for, and basically no rewards you can’t get without a big guild. Now with mega servers, large guilds might even get split when they try to gather together.

Suits me just fine I guess. The flip side of the coin is that its the most solo-friendly MMO ever created, which is pretty awesome… assuming you’re not the leader of a massive guild!
