Official Feedback Thread: Episode 4 -- Head of the Snake

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The final boss for this episode is the best I’ve played of this game’s soloable instanced content. If a vanilla necro with squishy gear only gets downed twice then it can’t be all that hard.

If it gets nerfed I will be sad.

The map is nice too.

I realize this map was described as focusing more on exploration, but the enemies and events are too easy. The final story mission can’t be failed either, which is anticlimactic.

The exploration and lore snippits were excellent, although I wish the snippits were assembled into an accessible book.

Yes. I appreciate armor that makes sense in this case. Although boob plates don’t make any sense to begin with, the logic is exacerbated further when they’re used on a race without boobs.

Suspending one’s belief is only fun up to a point.

The beetles whose ability text says something similar to “Vulnerable from front” are always vulnerable from any direction. The mechanic that would normally cause their uniform vulnerability (disabling them in some way so that they flip over) is no longer present.

Of course, this is probably just my imagination, but I’d like some more metrics to form an opinion.

How You Would Ruin Things

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Theundersigned.4761

Theundersigned.4761

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting (and abusing) this thread for their own agenda. This is about posting ideas you really love but know a lot of people would really hate, not criticizing the game. I’d imagine one of the reasons this thread was created was to make us more aware that we could just as easily ruin the game if we were in control.

For example, I’d personally like to raise the difficulty level to the same point across all the zones in the game. For example, downlevels wouldn’t benefit at all from fighting in low-level zones. Every zone would be equally challenging.

In addition, I’d bring in the good ol’ “corpse run” where you drop all items on death and have to reach your body in time before someone steals them. Also, you lose a portion of experience upon dying. Dropping to level 79 would be a very real risk, and any level 80 equipment would be automatically stripped from your person and added to your bag at the loss. Waypoints would triple or quadruple in cost too.

Oh, and while I’m at it, I’d love to add a map either entirely or mostly underwater at this very moment. Unlike a lot of people, I really enjoy current underwater exploration and combat with any class (except Engineer and Warrior, but only because I haven’t made those classes yet).

I’m unhappy almost exclusively because I like roaming low-level zones on my level 80 for fun.

On top of the removed conditions and removed “sophisticated” tactics for fights, a bunch of little interactions were removed as well. I just can’t have as much fun as I used to.

Not a huge deal, I suppose. Just a little sad. I guess for me it’s just your everyday disappointment.

Oh, and also downleveling for lower level characters has gone haywire, although I can’t pretend that it really affects me. I only care because it seems completely backwards, and I’m worried that it will be played off as a feature.

…And the jumbled up Personal Story. I hate the idea of losing or fragmenting any story.

But that’s it. Probably.

No because we’ve already been through all that kitten already, they haven’t. If they were really new players they wouldn’t even know unless someone told them. Please, in excruciating, drawn out, and dull detail (just like the new system), explain how this is in anyway fun for people who have been over this already? I just want to play my kittening characters. I want to explore the classes as I run with my accumulated knowledge of the game. But no, now with this kittened system we have the same experience every. single. time. Want to take your new asura to Wayfarer and level in the mountains for a change of pace/new feeling? TOO BAD kittenLORD YOU GOTTA FOLLOW DAT ARROW.

This sucks and there is no getting around that with any kind of wishy washy bs.

I’m not sure if this is directed at me as I don’t remember ever mentioning how fun the system is, but whatever.

New players do become old players. They’re bound to find out eventually that they were scammed out of an easier leveling experience. And I don’t think we should have to sacrifice them just to give ourselves an easier time…

Veterans with level 80s should be able to skip past the pointless gating.

If this were implemented, wouldn’t it just make new players feel like they were getting the short end of the stick?

If they had only bought the game sooner their lives would have been so much easier. That seems a little unfair to me.

Unless, of course, the first character to 80 would subsequently remove all time gating from new characters. That doesn’t sound like a bad idea.

Downscaling + new system is weird

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Theundersigned.4761

Theundersigned.4761

I know some people don’t expect this issue to change because the devs still haven’t fixed the new trait system the way players wanted, but I think these two cases can’t be compared.

The main gripe about the trait system is that everything takes too long. Level 30 unlock, map completion, etc. It’s really a matter of just not enjoying the feature. However, this issue right here is just completely bonkers.

While the new trait system makes basic sense as a game mechanic, this new downleveling effect couldn’t be more bizarre and backwards. I honestly can’t believe this is an intended consequence of lumping a bunch of stat bonuses together. It couldn’t be.

There might be a lot of things to complain about in this feature pack, but generally everything here makes sense. Everything has some sense of continuity and structure.
But this has to be a bug. It has to be. I don’t know why it was never fixed in China—maybe it was—but I have to believe this is a bug.

Theundersigned.4761

I’m probably doing a terrible job at explaining myself, but here it goes…

“Therefore, when ArenaNet does something that we don’t agree with, it’s perfectly acceptable to say that we aren’t crazy about it. It’s even better to explain specifically what we don’t like about it. However, the real problems begin when we butt in to where we don’t belong. Unless ArenaNet asks us what we would like in the game or how we think the story should pan out, we can’t assume to know any better, and we can’t assume that our opinion actually matters.”

It isn’t our place to tell ArenaNet how to act without its permission or petition, but that in no way implies that we can’t offer criticism. It’s often expected of us. However, we can’t think that we’re better and smarter than they are either.

Giving a suggestion for mounts, for instance, isn’t the same as telling ArenaNet that mounts should have always been in the game, all the other MMOs we’ve played had mounts (qualifying our suggestion), and any MMO without mounts is bound to fail. We shouldn’t believe that by suggesting mounts, we are smarter would-be developers than ArenaNet, just as we shouldn’t tell ArenaNet “how to write” because “we know better”.

It’s the whole “l2p” counter-argument.

An example many people could probably relate to: if I came to the forums one day and started talking about how thieves kept killing my mesmer in WvW, I would much rather someone say, “Well, this is what I do when I fight thieves…” than, “l2p moron. I can kill thieves blindfolded.” Even if the latter person gives dozens of viable options for killing thieves, that first sentence is completely unnecessary.

Furthermore, (unfounded) academic achievement represents nothing more than a college vouching for our abilities. It says absolutely nothing about our skill, only our dedication, wealth, disposition to the current academic format, etc.

A doctor graduating at the bottom of his or her class is still a doctor.

Theundersigned.4761

Isn’t the obsession with maturity a good sign that we’re immature? Reality check: This isn’t Teletubbies. A twelve year old could certainly not have written this. And it isn’t necessarily a bad thing that Guild Wars 2 doesn’t take itself too seriously.

This whole debacle reminds me a lot of when I was still a teenager six years ago. Honestly, I thought I knew everything there was to know about writing. I was embarrassed to be caught with anything that wasn’t worthy of Shakespeare. Everything else was full of silly plots and silly characters that made absolutely no sense. And silly things were for little kids. Me? I was an adult. An extremely precocious 14 year old.

I realize that criticism is an important step for growth, and it’s very admirable that so many people believe their opinions make a difference. However, enough is enough. Our individualism can only drive us so far before it becomes arrogance. We need to stop pretending that we’re tantamount to high-and-mighty college writing professors and accept that our rights as consumers only go so far.

For some reason, we are convinced that our role as gamers justifies everything beyond giving traditional feedback. We see ourselves as literary critics with an eye for only the most exquisite literature. But this isn’t the case. It can’t be. It is not our place to tell Arena Net how to do their job. Our role as gamers, as consumers, is not to tell ArenaNet how to work. Our role is merely the simple one of playing, testing, and giving appropriate feedback. Anything beyond that is either a mistake, an oversight, or an acute display of arrogance.

Our place is not to “teach” Arena Net how to do their job; our place is only to say, “I don’t like this. Here’s why,” or, “I like this. Here’s why.” We completely overstep our bounds when we say, “I don’t like this. Here is how it should have been done, and I want you to do it this way because I obviously know better than you.”

No amount of qualification will make this right. We can’t list all the complex, high-quality books we’ve read as proof that we know how things should be done. We can’t list all the examples of “good” story telling that we’ve seen or heard to qualify any sort of teaching degree. Unless specifically petitioned by ArenaNet to fill this particular role, we have no right to tell Arena Net what to do.

In this economy, the fact that we pay someone for a product demonstrates that we trust their competence. If we purchase something without first knowing their competence, then we ourselves are at fault for not knowing what we got ourselves into. In Guild Wars 2’s case, many people trusted ArenaNet to deliver a product with similar quality to Guild Wars 1. However, when these people decided that the two games were on different levels of quality, they became angry with what they considered “incompetence”.

Therefore, they have two choices and only two choices. They can either continue to trust the precedent set by Guild Wars 1, or they can choose to abandon their support for ArenaNet entirely. In other words, they can choose to believe that ArenaNet will deliver on their previously conceived competence, or they can choose to believe that it was some sort of fluke and that level of quality will never happen again. They are free to do either.

However, what they must do is keep their ego in check. They are not qualified to tell Arena Net how to become “competent”, and they shouldn’t assume that they know better or can speak for anyone else. They aren’t fit to determine who should and who shouldn’t enjoy a product. And most definitely they can’t think of themselves as the “savior” of either ArenaNet or any “poor soul” about to support Guild Wars 2.

Therefore, when ArenaNet does something that we don’t agree with, it’s perfectly acceptable to say that we aren’t crazy about it. It’s even better to explain specifically what we don’t like about it. However, the real problems begin when we butt in to where we don’t belong. Unless ArenaNet asks us what we would like in the game or how we think the story should pan out, we can’t assume to know any better, and we can’t assume that our opinion actually matters.

Simply purchasing the game doesn’t automatically give us a free-for-all pass to act as we please. Our role as consumers doesn’t mean that we are entitled to anything beyond our original exchange with ArenaNet. In fact, communicating with the developers is a privilege that many people never have. And by the very nature of a privilege, we ought to be thanking ArenaNet for this opportunity by observing a certain “consumer etiquette” in regards to our feedback.

Yay yin?

I always get extremely demoralized after reading posts like this…

If you don’t like Guild Wars 2 anymore, then there is a good chance that other people don’t like Guild Wars 2 anymore either.

And if other people don’t like Guild Wars 2 anymore, then there’s a good possibility that one day a lot of people won’t like Guild Wars 2 anymore.

And if a lot of people don’t like Guild Wars 2 anymore, then the game would one day begin to decline.

And if the game declines, the game can be shut down.

And if the game is shut down, then I won’t be able to play it anymore…

Yeah, you don’t have to be an Asura…but it sure is hard to be anyone else. I’ll tell you what’s impossible to make ugly: Sylvari…

Most of my attempts at making “ugly” characters (or even “old” characters—old people aren’t ugly :[ ) have resulted in semi-unattractive, attractive young people. The only advice I have: when in doubt, go square. Stick with extremes, like stretching out their faces. As much as possible. Make them look like frogs.

Also, psychologically, angry/mean = ugly. Studies have found that people tend to associate unpleasantness with ugliness. So get your frown on >:[

All this said, check out some of the NPCs I found with elderly faces. Shame players can’t use some of those. (The human with grey hair was my vain attempt at trying to make someone look old.)

Sorry for all the pictures…I experiment with this a lot.

Mordremoth concept art

Posted by: Theundersigned.4761

Theundersigned.4761

I see a couple interesting points that should be made about these examples…

Both styles have their merits; a more impressionist theme requires just as much artistic skill as any other.

Maybe Ruan Jia is just trying out something new? Artists do that sort of thing all the time.

Or this particular art style could be part of his job. ArenaNet might have asked him to switch things up for the purpose of the Living World.

I wonder what people would say if he confessed to enjoying this style more…It could be…

But honestly, I haven’t seen many disparities in the art style of Guild Wars 2. The Living World may adapt a stronger kind of impressionism more often, but I think it generally fits with the “painterly” motif of the game as a whole.

And since we’re sharing opinions, I really like that Tequatl picture much more than the scaly beasty next to it. Not only does it seem to fit better with Guild Wars 2’s theme, but it also just looks purty.

What are we supposed to do about sabotage in WvW? None of the options under “report” really fits, and we’re told ArenaNet generally focuses on the chat logs, not “unsubstantiated player reports.”

So, are we supposed to sit back and watch? Or is there some way to get these people to stop?

Anyone have any experience with this?

In this case, there is someone spamming ballista all over our keep and using up keep supply. Granted, this isn’t the most damaging sabotage (yet), but something about it doesn’t sit right with me.

I mean, the horns aren’t bad. I guess I can understand why they made them float around instead of sticking out of your head. They probably would have had problems with helms and hair and stuff. Probably wouldn’t even be able to see them. And what else could you have floating over your head that represents thoughtlessness?

I suppose they could have made the horns bigger or longer and stuck ‘em on the side of your head. I don’t know. That could make them more noticeable, but would that make the halo people angry? Plus there’s the whole parallelism with two floating items.

Yeah, the horns aren’t bad. But I’ll stick with the halo anyway. Something just feels awkward about walking around the refugee camps with devil horns…

Gotta make sure each post adds to the infinite tool discussion instead of focusing on individual posts or people’s attitude.

That said, as more time goes by, I’m interested to see how much this will affect things. We’ll have to wait until sprockets are either sparse or gone from general PvE at the very least, but afterwards, I wonder how this will affect things. Post any firsthand feedback here! :]

Beyond people’s frustration and beyond people’s indignation, I wonder what will happen to the economy, the idea of elitism, the player population of the game (I sincerely hope this won’t change it that much), and any other unforeseeable consequences.

Also, the question arises: will ArenaNet consider using sprockets in other crafting recipes? (I’m ignoring the “precedent discussion” as this has been talked to death.) Would they reason that this pumps enough sprockets into the auction house to warrant new recipes? Very possible.

At this point in time, sprockets aren’t used for much. How would a new (really good) recipe affect the demand for sprockets? (Probably increase it.) So, would this warrant more sources of sprockets (assuming PvE sources are removed in the future)? I doubt we can truly know until we see the changes in sprocket availability, but it’s interesting to think about. As it stands right now, I doubt the node and the pick could keep up with real heavy demand for sprockets.

Or, would sprockets become an event resource like snowflakes and candy corn? Yearly Queen Jenna’s Jubilee, filled with sprocket-full machines for example. (And would this be enough to satisfy the hypothetical heavy demand?)
