I don’t think Taimi is loved for a disability. Being loved for a disability would be being a token character, and such characters are degrading to disabled people for the fact that they almost always act as a sympathy receptacle as opposed to an actual human being, with a few exceptions.

The proposed idea would be a ridiculous amount of modelling and animation work for basically no payoff. I don’t know of anyone, and I know a person who required the assistance of a wheelchair for most of their life, who would want their character to have a disability. Ignoring the fact that the heroes of the game are fit and healthy for a reason (they couldn’t be heroes otherwise), it would just be way too much work, especially for the wheelchair option. How would one swing a greatsword with the proper momentum from a wheelchair?

AI heroes basically turned GW1 into a single player game.

No thank you. Stop trying to drag everything from GW1 into this game simply because it was in GW1.

That was the beauty of Guild Wars 1, that you could play it solo if you wanted to up to the Elite Missions, where you basically had to find a party. The design for this game was supposed to reflect that, in that party co-ordination was needed for larger, world events and dungeons, but you could also feasibly play by yourself and have dynamic groupings with other random travellers in the wilds.

Unfortunately the shrinking player base makes the latter not work in a majority of cases, except on maps with trains and whatnot. I can only hope ANet comes up with a decent solution to that problem that’s not just a stop-gap, and Heroes would be the optimal, if distant and improbable, solution.

Anet: It's time to move to paid expansions

Vermillion Hawk.9037

Secondary classes will probably never happen. That’s too much modification of basic game mechanics to ever see the light of day in anything but a complete re-release of the game. If they think new players had trouble understanding the systems in the game as they were, how do you think they’d make it “easier to understand” for what is basically an exponential increase of the number of class possibilities? That’s just PvE too, the impact to PvP would be fatal (Mesmer/Thieves, Mesmer/Thieves everywhere).

My point in my previous posts was that if the basic mechanics of the game are good enough, that will be enough to continually draw back players, or at the very least, it’s enough to continue drawing me back. If the base game doesn’t get “stale” to the point where I don’t have any motivation to continue playing, then any add-on content will only build on that base and make the game even more enjoyable, regardless of the nature of it.

That’s been true, at least for me, for the previous events. I missed out on Wintersday, but the first and second Halloween, as well as events like the Queen’s Jubilee and the Crown Pavillion all enticed me to not only continue playing the game but to try out the new and interesting events. I spent an obscene amount of time and in-game money trying to beat Liadri, and I enjoyed every hour of failure. So for me, at least, the sort of drastic change in content isn’t exactly necessary.

It’s only when they do stupid stuff like change the gem conversion process that I start thinking that they should make expansions, if only to prevent the microtransaction focus from consuming the game.

Well actually there’s a great example in that 7 years ago or so they did a slight remake of it which added a couple of new characters, side missions and two new jobs, and that did change the game and made it more fun, because they built off of the already-great base to add other features which overall improved the experience.

Before megaservers I’d have said this was an absolute necessity, and like others have said it was initially supposed to be a feature. Nowadays it’s not that necessary but with the apparent hemorrhaging of players, the megaservers are merely a stop-gap solution.

The Heroes of Guild Wars 1 were, in my opinion, one of the greatest additions to the games because you got a permanent party with customizable equipment and skills and various personalities (albeit only given through sparse idle/combat quotes). On top of that, there were also “Mercenary” Heroes which were basically what the OP describes, your own character as an AI companion.

I’d love to see Heroes return, even Mercenary Heroes, but with the way the game works as of now I don’t think it’d work out.

Third Soldier Class

As a class name, “Partisan” recalls more of an irregular fighter rather than purely a spear-user. A Partizan was a catch-all term for a spear or polearm at points in the Renaissance, yes, but it’s certainly not suitable for a class name.

That being said, I’d rather see something that looks like these guys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reiter

It would fit with the general pseudo-Renaissance air of the game while also providing for a unique type of heavily-armored class. You could rename them Cuirassiers or Gendarmes or anything like that. The main point would be they would be a melee class focusing on finesse in combat as opposed to brute force like the Warrior, how to translate that into the game proper would obviously be up in the air.

Their main weapons would be rifles, pistols and swords, whether or not to include dual-wielded swords in there is up to Anet. Obviously mounted combat is out of the question but there is a general quality to the fighting style of a Reiter that makes them unique even without the horse. In any case that’s the sort of class I’d like to see, and it doesn’t even require any additional work on new weapon types to implement.

Where did the term 'toon' come from?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vermillion Hawk.9037

Vermillion Hawk.9037

The Oxford English Dictionary has no entries for rig that even come close to justifying the colloquial utilization of it in relation to a computer. The best it in particular comes to that is in describing an amateur radio operator’s equipment, which is what I can only imagine our modern slang term evolved from. Still doesn’t change that it sounds stupid and if you use it in a conversation with me I’ll likely think you’re an idiot.

The issue with “toon”, as with “rig”, is not so much the fact that it’s an incorrect colloquialism but the fact that it just plain old sounds ugly and not only that, is largely irrelevant, and associated with an almost completely different medium. An episode of The Simpsons could be rightly called a “toon”. So, apparently, according to you, could your character. Not only is it ugly, it’s also obfuscating. Ultimately a pointless affectation of a phrase and, like “rig”, one which will, for me, call into question the intelligence or linguistic skills of the one using it.

Most contractions and short forms have a purpose. For this reason I’m okay with shorthand and contractions, for the most part, since they, for most people, facilitate writing in an online environment. There terms in particular, however, have no discernible usage beyond being literary curios, words that one can use to appear to belong to a certain group that might seem desirable to one. Thus, not only are they worthless, they are annoying.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vermillion Hawk.9037

It’s one of the most annoying words among the gamer subculture for me. It’s not “cartoon” in the colloquial sense, and only by the most literal definition could you call it that, so using a contraction, an incredibly colloquial device, to give an incredibly literal definition basically defeats the purpose of using a contraction and just looks stupid altogether.

It’s like “rig”. It’s a computer, not an 18-wheeler.

And for the record, both character and avatar are acceptable (and moreover, not antiquated and foolish) substitutes, and unlike someone has already insinuated, character can in fact refer to your on-screen personage as opposed to purely to your own conduct. Example: Darth Vader is a character. xXxDVadezxXx is my character.

Server Population and PvE

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Vermillion Hawk.9037

Vermillion Hawk.9037

This is something which is, in my opinion, a major problem and something which has prevented me from enjoying the game to the extent which I feel I could. As the title says, server population has become a major issue for me.

I started out this game in August of 2012 playing on the Isle of Janthir server. It was pretty average then, given that almost all servers were experiencing high numbers of players at that point in time. As time went on, however, the number of players started dwindling. Whereas I’d be seeing groups and individuals occasionally stopping to help with events in just about every area, now, in November of 2012, I was starting to see only the occasional individual roaming about. Now, in January 2014, the only place I ever see people is in Lion’s Arch, and it’s a massive surprise to encounter anyone outside of a living world event.

Attribute this to your preferred cause all you want, but the fact remains that many servers, mine included, have a despicably low level of population, whereas servers such as Blackgate experience massive influxes of players and guests daily, enough to make co-ordinating with my friends a hassle due to having to deal with overflows and the like when we guest there, not to mention ruining WvW for the server.

The biggest victim of this, however, is PvE. PvE is nigh-impossible in a ghost-town server. Aside from occasional trains running through the tried-and-true areas killing champions, there’s nobody to do events. Forts are left overrun, NPCs are slain at every outpost they can be slain at and meta-events rarely progress to the final stage.

As such, I’m proposing this – that ANet focus on PvE, at least for a single update, to at attempt to try and get some modicum of balance present for PvE. As it is right now, combat events (which are 90% of events anyways) are nearly impossible to complete without a horde. One or two or even five people often cannot take on events which are relatively small in comparison to the larger events, which require a seething mass of humanity to tackle at the very least.

Adjust the event scaling, increase the usefulness of NPCs, whatever it takes – just please try and ensure that people stuck in these servers aren’t left in the dark.

I called you a fanboy because of this, which is a feature that all fanboys have.

Taking it too seriously and emotionally? Now you really do show your ego. If you think I’m feeling anything but amusement as I interact with someone who holds such negative feelings towards the developer of a video game, you are deluding yourself.

vermillion , there are like what 20 legendaries? it’s not that hard to make these ‘legendary’ weapons have no clipping issues on 5 races >_> this is just pure slacking and garbage

It’s not the legendary weapons but instead the weapon types themselves, and the issue comes not from “pure slacking” but from the fact that the sheer amount of customization options available to the player and all the possible permutations of such make the task an incredibly difficult and resource-consuming one to ensure every weapon does not clip with some race or another. If you have any suggestions as to how ANet should modify the weapon-holstering system in order to better accommodate this, go ahead and make them.

Dynamic Event Readjustment

in Suggestions

Posted by: Vermillion Hawk.9037

Vermillion Hawk.9037

Now before people start freaking out let me say that I am not some hater or detractor of the game, but neither am I blind to its flaws. Yes, there are some in the game, such as the ones which I will now point out.

Let’s face it – Dynamic Events are great. They’re fun. Unfortunately, for the most part, they don’t quite work as intended. In areas where few people other than completionists such as myself go, Dynamic Events can in fact be something of a hindrance to gameplay. One recent example came about when I was 100% completing the Iron Marches. There was an event which occurred where the flame legion attacked one of the towns in the region. I figured I’d go out and give it a shot. Unfortunately, myself plus the NPCs was not enough, and the town fell. When I returned to town to try and liberate it, I found that even having revived all the NPCs in the town the Flame Legion enemies just kept spawning too fast for us to deal with. I put out a little advertisement for the event, yet nobody responded, and the town remained firmly in the grasp of the enemy.

Now, I realize that ANet is currently doing work on trying to get more players out into the open world, and I highly appreciate that. Even if it works though, it’s not going to solve everything. Even in areas of moderate population, where you’ll see several fellow travellers wandering about, events often go uncompleted as people just waltz by them, not taking time out of their day to stop and help. This is why I propose a few changes to Dynamic Events, and the solo explorer’s experience in the open world.

The first change – increase the power of allied NPCs somewhat. This is something which I believe is crucial to many events, and has significant bearing on personal story missions as well. Let’s face it – your NPCs often do jack kitten all in a fight against enemies. The best they can hope to be is a meatshield, or, in the case of some engineer NPCs, a meatshield which spawns more meatshields. Most, if not all the damage dealt in a fight will come from the player. Allowing the allied NPCs to become combat viable at the very least would be a welcome change. I’m not saying make it so that they can hold off assaults on their own – I’m just saying make it so that they actually do something.

The second change would be to scale the events better in accordance with how many people are present. As it is now, the events do change depending on the number of participants (I think?), but it’s a limited scale in comparison to the fluctuations of people participating. Sometimes you’ll get the feared zerg rush event, especially in the dragon events – so many people clog the screen that the enemies die in seconds. Other times it’ll be you and maybe one or two others, futilely trying to stem the tide of enemies. An increase in the variation possible for events would go a long way in helping this.

The third and final change is something which will likely never be implemented, and that would be reintroducing the hero system, which itself opens up a new can of worms, and I’ll not elaborate further as it is unfeasible.

Can you and the person above you post exactly what you’re doing then, to have said gold without “repeating anything at all” ?

Bold claims

It’s not a bold claim – here’s exactly what I do. I roam around, get 100% on various zones and sell most of the stuff I pick up from events, material-gathering, loot and completion rewards. I really only buy gathering tools and new armor every so often, weapons tend to come pretty easily. I just go around, explore and do events if they interest me. I die every so often, but I make more than enough to cover it.

It’s certainly not the most efficient method of farming gold, but I’ve got about 50 gold in the bank now from getting 70% world completion, counting all the stuff I’ve sold, materials including.

Well dungeons are in the process of being rebalanced so that you don’t get the so-called death fest, but if you feel you have nothing to do at endgame, there’s no remedy for that. Also since you’ve been away there’s been a new addition of dungeon called the Fractals where you can do what are essentially a bunch of little mini-dungeons, at increasing levels of difficulty as you progress.

Other than that, what is there to do at 80? Everything. The content is not so heavily gated in the degree you see in other MMOs. You could go for the 100% exploration, get into a guild that does stuff often, try and get a legendary… The list goes on.

It would be both a great balance for stealth skills and a great increase to the usefulness of the Ranger for them to have some trait that could detect stealth with pet, or maybe a skill to detect stealth.

Opinions on player ability to get gold?

You can play the market for a ton of money as well, with some decent economic sensibility.

Even selling crafting materials to the market gets you tons of cash, and all it takes is stopping around on your travels to mine a few nodes or chop a few trees.

I’m sure Cantha will definitely appear in future expansions. I’d guess probably not the first though, maybe more around the third.

It’s not difficult at all to get more than enough gold to cover any possible expenses (repairs, tools, etc.) and then some. I’ve never had to grind for gold.

Apparently actual player housing is on the drawing board for future updates. It’s still quite a ways away though, I’d imagine.

Is guild wars 2 dead?

It’s sad that this thread still exists. Is the game dying? No, but what is dying is the tightly-knit community which has gathered in this forum, united by their hatred towards this game for shattering their overzealous expectations, and slowly withering away as they each take turns convincing each other that the game is finally slain.

Unfortunately, in this case they can’t die soon enough.
