glittering weapons from Black Lion Traders.
Is it me, or does clipping hair + clipping glittering greatsword/longbow/etc… and clipping glittering wings look like real mess?

Serious, I wish they had the option to hide the weapon on your back to. when out of combat. Or maybe just do it like the Asuran’s, carry the GS on your shoulder. But what about the longbow and such then? :S

And I guess this is old news, but seems a real shame they put so much effort into stuff and you can’t wear it because it looks like a total mess. Not getting my money, sorry Anet.

Just a question: who does them?
I mean it seems absurd that for every new batch of weapon skins, you can do a collection.
Then again, seeing the cost of legendary weapon crafting in HoT I guess buying gems trough ingame gold to buy keys for chests would amount up with to the same cost (or even less?) for one to do, no?
And what about buying keys with gems you paid with real money?

Anyhow, what are your thoughts on this?

VB, Night Meta event to extreme?

First of all, this is not the kind of map where you can trust on others. Yes, you need a full map, but if everyone stands next to each other and looks at one person doing all the work, then you aren’t doing very much. (I’ve seen to many people rely on just commanders.)

Things you HAVE to DO on this map:

Taxi people in yourself. Again, don’t depend on others. Taxi taxi taxi. You have a party of three and you’re not sure if the map is full, refresh your LF group again. I’ve seen times that people say that the map is full, only for one to join my three player party again after a minute or two.

If you have a mentor tag, and know what to do, TAG UP. No matter if you are a commander or a mentor, when night time comes, go to a camp and tag up. This way people will know where to go. There are 20 camps in total. So spread out.

Keep map chat alive. Let people know where you are, what events are being done, how much percent, and what to do. Again, don’t depend on others to do this, because some people aren’t even used to using map chat. (my biggest fear is that they don’t even have it turned on…)

Spread out and HELP for supply runs. Sometimes a crash happens and there are loads of supplies. Pass it trough on chat where and how much. It helps to bring up the defenses. You need t4/t5.

A lot depends on YOU. As a player, as a participant.

Right:
“What I do is taxi in, leave the party so more people can taxi, and then make a new party with the people in my area.”

Wrong:
“PLEASE! Do something with night meta…. day takes too long, everybody leaves!!!!! THERE IS NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE PLAYING! EVER!”

Coordination and self effort goes a long way…
And yes, it’s a long event, but then again, those that sacrafice themselves to do another round and get fresh people in, to those I say: respect.
It would be perfect if some led the others for a cycle, do two cycles and then leave. While those others take their place for a new round of two cycles. So that the map stays active.

Then again, “LFG going for Nighttime t4 organized”… if there were as many of those as there were “SW 90%”, we’d be in heaven.

Give it some time...

WhiteFox.9432

Do you think the maps are active enough?

I don’t. I still think the game opens up new maps too quickly. It’s not that it’s quiet, it’s just not busy enough for the meta events to really have a chance, it seems.

Auric Basin is a bit of an exception though. It’s an easy meta event to understand and fairly unorganised maps seem to be able to complete it with relative ease these days. Tangled Depths and Verdant Brink never seem busy enough to actually get anywhere meaningful… and Dragon’s Stand…every time I enter that map there are 20-30 people standing around the start but no-one is prepared to go and wait next to the NPCs.

I’ll do like David in Prometheus did… repeat that one phrase that catches my interest:
“It’s not that it’s quiet, it’s just not busy enough for the meta events to really have a chance.”

Hence my worries for the future and my demand for time. I’ll go level up my Revenant in Tyria the old fashioned way for now and do my daily world bosses. Until I see or hear from an increase in either population or succesfull meta events in HoT.

I do hope we see some improvement in the next couple of weeks. Cause if not, more and more people are going to get bored real fast (seeing a topic or three pop up now, not a good sign), or frustrated. (more then enough of those.)

Let us pray to Susan…

Worries about the future of Guild Wars 2

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: WhiteFox.9432

WhiteFox.9432

I’m not sure about the future of GW2 for different reasons, actually.

It looks like ArenaNet doesn’t know what they’re doing.

First, they would continue GW2 with the model of a Living World, telling a story in real time as the world would change to make players feel like they saw history as it happened. They even said that, if they did the LW right, GW2 would not have an expansion. Yet the season 1 was a failure, after players complained about all the temporary content that made people feel nothing had really been added to the game.

Then ArenaNet tried a different model with Season 2; it was far more timid, world-changing wise (other than adding a couple new maps, it didn’t really change the existing GW2 world that much), and was focused on instanced, soloable content. They also monetized it more, by making people to have to buy it if they didn’t log-in when the content was released.

Yet, that also failed to increase GW2’s earnings. Not only it didn’t increase the earnings like the spike of an expansion sale, but it also barely stopped the earnings from falling.

So then ArenaNet went in a third, different direction, and stopped releasing new content for the core game while working on an expansion. We are seeing the results of that now, with HoT…

…But the expansion hasn’t been all flowers, either. It’s clearly unfinished – content ArenaNet said would be there at release isn’t (the first three new legendary weapons, the new squad system, the Fractal leaderboard), not to mention the content that ArenaNet promised would come “later” without any tangible release date (raids, the full set of new legendary weapons, and etc).

The hurried release of an unfinished expansion, together with how they began to sell HoT – before even announcing a release date, asking people to pay full money for it, and before they actually made most of the announcements that would later make the community erupt into surges of rage – hint that ArenaNet was kinda desperate for money.

Now, we don’t know what will be the result of this third model (after the LW season 1 model and the LW season 2 model). The empty HoT maps are not encouraging.

Now, what else do we know?

  • ArenaNet had basically to make server merges with the megaserver thing, due to how empty the maps were. This doesn’t exactly scream “look how healthy the game is!”.
  • GW2 became free to play, and we know that no MMORPG went free to play when its previous business model was being a success. This is a big hint that GW2 wasn’t being that successful as Buy to Play.
  • NCSoft, which completely owns ArenaNet, has distanced itself from GW2. We have been told that it’s ArenaNet who’s publishing GW2 now, instead of NCSoft; the lack of advertisement about HoT is a very clear sign of how few resources ArenaNet has as far as publishing goes when compared to NCSoft itself. And when you go to the NCSoft website and hover over the “Games” title in the site’s top bar, the site shows Aion, Blade & Soul, Lineage 2, WildStar… But no GW2.
  • Lots of important people have left ArenaNet this year:

Jon Peters, former Game Design Lead? Left ArenaNet a few months ago to join Amazon.

Eric Flannum, former Lead Designer for GW2? Left ArenaNet to also join Amazon.

Kristen Perry, the main artist behind the Sylvary look? Left ArenaNet a couple months ago.

Not to mention Chris Whiteside, who was the one doing all the CDIs with the community. Notice how many of those left ArenaNet a few months ago. Does this hint that everything inside ArenaNet is sunny and happy? Nope, it doesn’t.

  • There are many complains about how empty the HoT maps are, just 2 weeks after release.

We will see what happens after HoT. It’s possible that ArenaNet will grow with the earnings from the expansion… Or it’s possible that HoT won’t be big enough to fill the hole in the sinking ship, and soon the layoffs will begin. Time will tell. But really, I wouldn’t be exactly hopeful about the future of GW2 right now.

I have a feeling you are right. I had the luck of playing on HoT maps that were active. Not always full at that. And I was expecting to be swarming with players, mega events being completed most of the time.

It’s just the oppesite. It’s alive, but barely. It can now either go two ways: keep diminishing or grow. The coming weeks (and patches) will be vital.

It’srather funny to see players from WoW got out of there because it became to easy. And now we have GW, trying to overthrone WoW with more difficult stuff…

For the love of god, give Anet some time to clear things up, patch a few bugs, leave people that want to grind events for masteries grind until their hearts content.
It’s been only out of a week or so, and I just completed my first endgame boss event. Why? Because only now they got their heads around the best way to use a mechanic that doesn’t involve standing about defending.
I don’t even think the developers saw this tactic coming even. But it works, after so many days, it works. That is, if people step up and start organising.

I also believe the developers tried to take a step into something new, something bold. Maps with hundreds of players constantly doing events. Their “dream”.
But… I’ve yet to see a map that holds two guilds working toghether along with the rest of the people on it do make things work. (for example) Cause in my eyes, that’s how the game is designed. Bigger, faster, harder.

I guess, we both need time, the players as well as the developers. But I’m certainly wondering if things are going as planned. If I should log in today and try to keep this game alive or just leave it like it is, until they patch it up (HP’s being bugged, NPC’s en events bugged, getting thrown out of the game, etc etc..) and come come back to see those hundreds of players/guilds being active again. Don’t get me wrong, it’s active alright, but not that active to complete a night tier 4 on Verdant Brink for example. Nor do I see a lot of people running around with high number of masteries. (hence my topic title.)

This is a new kind of thing in the world of MMO’s…. Mega events. Silverwastes and Drytop was just a prelude. And it worked, somehow. Now they pushed the limit once more with more maps, bigger meta events, harder enemies.

So I guess I’ll give it some time to let itself point out if this thing will work or not. For now, it’s still rough around the edges to me. It’s fun, there is lots of stuff to do and masteries to get.

I hereby close my rambling with a few questions for you all. Even the developers:
Do you think the maps are active enough? Should there be more players already in these first few days that every meta event should work just like that? Or should we give this expansion more time to let itself solve it out? And is this mega event mechanic a good thing for the future, when people will be bored again and hard content will be left aside, only for new players to be unable to finish it properly? Are these things thought trough enough?

edit
I’m not giving up on GW, just have my doubts about HoT. I’m always in for a world boss or two. (or more)

Outcry for Change

WhiteFox.9432

This game is not a mess, just that it needs some more polishing. There are still bugs present (such as an NPC collector at one event that doesn’t always allow you to give your stuff to him unless you drop it and then collect it again, wasting precious time before the nightfall begins timer runs out.), some rewards for certain tiers are either to high or to low (crowbars for a tier 3? serious?) and more then half of the people are still busy leveling.

To me, this isn’t a hard game anymore, even as a solo player. It’s become a drag doing the events on one map over and over and over and over to get to a tier to get a small chance at an armor box. THAT… is what is turning me away from the game right now.

Once you explored the stuff, it gets boring real fast. Sure, a lot of events, but not enough to make it appealing to grind those masteries, as they become very natural after a few hours.

I do agree that the game contradicts itself at some points. Atleast, that’s how it feels…
I think I’ll take a break and come back when some things are smoothened out. (or nerfed.)

Was a great journey over 3 maps (I don’t count the last as a real map as it’s so small you basicly are “camping” out for the meta event to start out, semetrical (sp) maps in PvE are a waste in MMORPG’s.) but I’ve seen it all, don’t half of it (never saw any of the end meta events on the maps completed except Tarir sometimes), gg.

Felt even shallower then Factions at the time. Same rushed based stuff, more crowd, less completed bosses. Semi wasted money. (nice designed map and graphics, beautiful soundtrack… to bad the rest can’t cope.)

Also, there is a chance at a chest containing bladed armor at the end of cycle 4 during the day, but so far… nada.

Pfff, this game still has some things to polish up it seems. Oh well, we’ll get there. Another 5 years or so…

This. 2 chests per tier, 4 tiers… Always a bag, 3 crowbars and xp.
Now I do understand that one needs crowbars to open those cargo barrels… but that many?! You can only use one to open a cargo barrel, so what gives?

Also, why not better (rarer) rewards for higher tiers? Especially at night, we get three tiers and (supposedly, I have never experienced it) on tier 4 we get a “chance” at a rare armor piece? What? Did crowbars ran out of stock suddenly? /sarcasm

Seriously… what do you think about rewards/crowbars? Is it balanced according to you? Or just things to be a placeholder until patch up/balance out some stuff?

Agreed. Not even new players, but players who don’t know or don’t care. I didn’t even know it, so I never bothered to try to do my best at events.
Now that I know, it seems impossible because I have never even seen a tier 4. Don’t they realize they can’t force people to do stuff? 70% doesn’t “care” (to much work, so meh), 20% doesn’t know, 5% tries hard en harder, 5% got lucky.

Wait, there is a tier 4?
I haven been playing on that map since like 4 days ago, each time a full day and night cycle and I’m really really surprised there is a tier 4. I’ve never seen it go above tier 3.

So I hope they give this to a mastery vendor, with double the requirements. As it stands now, it’s only going to bleed out as even less en less people will try to get as high as possible.

I’ll wait till they patch it. Half of the content in this game isn’t even played. It’s a shame the artists put so much work into the mechanics and visuals, only to not be seen by more then half of the player population.
(after 4 days of playing I only got to see the matriarch Wyvern, and once the hardest part commenced… poof no one around anymore. That doesn’t bode very well for the future…)

WhiteFox.9432

I’m not against hardcore content and large group play. I’m also not against solo play, each has it’s place in a game like this.
In fact, I believe you can’t have one without the other. Casual players keep the game alive, hardcore players keep it active. There’s a difference.
Now this is where they dropped the ball. I don’t know why they made it like they did, but as time progresses, they’ll either patch it to hell to make this expansion more accessible or they’ll keep it and try to attract a (small) group of hardcore players. Cause admit it, the largest part of players are casual/semi hardcore.

With all the gating and stuff, this game feels like a mess. They pumped all their energy in the music, environments, storyline that they forgot how to make the core game mechanics appealing to everyone. They want a hardcore online multiplayer RPG game (hence this whole event thing so central in the maps), not an all round MMO. I wish them luck on their current path.

I’ve never seen them make huge maps either in their expansions. It always revolved around 4,5 areas, and always involved grinding titles/unlockable stuff, etc..
(Nightfall being closer to the core game then Factions or this expansion ever was)

I wonder, in another five years, if they make another expansion how the hell are they going to keep events on maps alive if this keeps up…
I think I’ll just leave the game for what it is and turn back in another year. To see if it’s still as gated and thus almost abandond or patched and accesible.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the current “difficulty”. I just wish it had more people and if that’s not the case, more stuff you could do on your own (with less difficulty). Right now it fails in both.

WhiteFox.9432

Well, they are throwing all their work forces on/at the expansion, so it’s understandable that it’s rather calm right now.
To tell the truth, I find there are still enough things to do. Repeating dungeons for easy cash, collecting “stuff” (weapon skins, armor), crafting ascended armor and weapons, leveling characters, doing the occasional PvP (yuck, but hooray for the reward track), crafting mawdrey, trying to get some achievements in jumping puzzles, slayer and living story season 2, and roaming SW and DT for mats and stuff, doing world events for that chance at that one lucky drop.

But is there anything new? Nope.
I think we are spoiled by other MMORPG’s that require a payment per month to play. Of course they have to provide new content, you pay them to! Here, you can thank the gods on your knees if something new comes out.
Don’t treat this game like an old toy, that you are bored off and just throw away. Instead put it down somewhere in your room, on a place you walk by daily and maybe pick it up now and then. That’s the trick to keeping it interesting.

That’s one thing I hate about PvP…
You read the map stuff, you get a few seconds to explore the map, then the timer counts down, I rush in and everything, almost everything I just red, suddenly packs up from my brain and goes “bye bye, you’re on your own now!”

It’s so fast, my brain has trouble keeping up with all the info.

Hmm, maybe at a slower pace (read, no hopping around/running skills), with NPC enemies (bots as they used to call them in Unreal Tournament lol)… idk, something like that.
Maybe, like someone mentioned, the system Heroes Of The Storm uses.

WhiteFox.9432

I agree on a few key points here. Ele and Engi don’t have weapon swap for good reason, they have plenty of options without it. Revenant does not feel the same way. It feels very limited on options. On Ele and Engi I am never forced to either melee or ranged combat. With Revenant I feel that I am forced to range with hammer and forced to melee with staff or mace/axe. There’s limited flexibility.

This.

It all feels so “clunky”. This is one new profession and they’re like making a jack of all trades with everything turned up side down, and for what? What are they going to do with future expansions then?
I don’t know, but I have mixed feelings with this class and so far they aren’t many “I like it” mixed feelings.

But then again, let’s wait for the full expansion, when core classes will get other weapons to play with and such.

So far: It’s not not fun, it’s more “meh” for me.

… I’ve seen creatures of metal and steam.

That’s what an NPC in Hoelbrak (Kristyna Sohnstag: Trade Commons) is shouting out the whole time.

So I checked out Lornar’s Pass and she’s right. Who built those portals/structures there to let them out in the first place? (They fold into themselves when destroyed.)

Now I also know appear in the personal story line of the Asura.
I’m almost there to start the main phase of that part with my Asura. (I think…)

I understand they ALSO appear in the Thaumanova Reactor to. Is there a story line or quest that connects to this building? (minus the fractal they are going to add.)

One thing I do notice is that the “native” steam creatures coming out of the portal in Lornar’s Pass are rather “normal” looking. While those that are invading now, have greenish parts/glows to them and look a bit different and more agressive. Separating them a bit from the ones in Lornar’s Pass.

So I’m really wondering if Scarlet is truly shaping another possible future or things are going the way they are supposed to be?
I’ve seen groups of Steam Hulks to be defeated and they appear to be a piece of cake compared to her more “advanced” troops like the twisted nightmares. (haven’t been paying attention to the colors.)

-Exactly WHAT did she she PAST the vision of the Pale Tree, when she said: “So be it…”
-Why US? Why attack humans first, why build her lair (such an ugly word) in DR?
-Still doesn’t explain how she acquired the help of the Molten Alliance and such.
-Does it really tie in with the whole beginning of the personal story that you play, or just one branch of it? (the time portal and such)

The one thing I don’t like about this lore thing: they are taking away the magic and are placing themselves on thin ice here.
Granted: eternal alchemy, steampunk enemies, invasions… All very nice and action packed, but…

This IS still Guild Wars right? About gods and dragons, about heroes and long forgotten magic?
This isn’t turning out to be Dishonored online or something, is it?

Let’s actually take an additional step forward with the healing mechanic someone mentioned. Let’s say there’s a dungeon where every enemy is mechanical and any trash that you decide to skip will become spare parts for the last boss. In other words, the trash you skip will converge on the boss from all corners of the dungeon and sacrifice themselves to the boss in order to heal it. This doesn’t mean skipping trash won’t work because you can still kill them before they make it to the boss but it does produce a risk/reward kind of situation. Do you kill trash for a shorter boss fight or do you skip them and risk a longer boss fight?

I LOVE the idea, but sadly, I don’t think with the current game mechanics that is doable. But you could be on to something. Maybe one designer can get inspired by this. Cause I …hate…skipping… (died to much doing so.)

Am I the only one who like the intro movie (the part where… well, when all hell broke lose) very very much?
I hope they bring in more of these types of “dynamic” movies. There is one moment there, that I thought was so cool/funny that it’s still stuck in my head. (Without spoiling to much.)

I “like” her. I admit it. So there.
She has totally lost it. Totally. I don’t need a super villain who says: “All your realm shall belong to me, you fools!” It’s been done before in plenty of games.
So has the seducing seductress. And the cool macho. Or the old dark and sinister caped wanderer.

She lost it, it’s that simple. And we all know how crazy pure geniuses can get. Nutty professors ftw! Unless they turn evil, like Scarlet.
And it’s kinda scary, because we don’t know what she’ll do when she really gets mad. There are nu rules, no boundaries, nothing to crazy.

I tried looking up the portals, but only saw some weird looking industrial structures. Hmmm. I hope she’s not an alien in disguise. hahaha (Now that would really be a failure.)

Oh, and I love the way the enemies are shaped. Congratz to the designers/artists and whoever worked on them. They are kinda scary. Reminding me of War of The Worlds and The Matrix and The Fallen Transformers. Awesome.
She on the other hand could have looked more menacing. Keep the crazy lit eyes, but change her head a bit…

I look forward to put that crazy twig down for good! If only to shut her up. hehe (Unless she comes back with every anniversary event. :p)

Good job team! Room for improvement, but overall, give yourselves a pat on the back. You can’t satisfy everyone, but if you can satisfy more then you let down, that’s a good job.

So... everything in this patch is temporary

I’m glad to read that they will look into ways that will allow players to experience the story sequences that will go away as the story moves forward.
It shouldn’t be hard to do… just created (different?) NPC’s in an instanced area that allows you to view small GW2 style art movies about the story.
A bit like the scrying pool in GW1 HoM perhaps?

Just keep in mind that Christmas events, Queen’s Jubilee (every anniversary), and Halloween are set in stone. So… I’m not really complaining.

What I am afraid off, is with the announcement that there probably will be no expansion packs, that they will take the easy way out: recycle parts of the models or story even to create new area’s.
But so far, this hasn’t happened. I would just love to see a world shocking event, that opens up the desert and let’s you play a new dungeon and new area’s and enemies. (A new dragon even!)

Maybe that will be possible next year, when they have had enough time to work undercover, while old events return.

All in all this feels like they are saying: “We can do better then WoW: Cataclysm. And we can prove it!”
So far, things are going slow, I have yet to see a new/changed region that replaces an expansion pack.

But for now that’s ok. They have a year or two, give or take, before I will get tired of the “state” of this game.

Token Wallet! Thank you a-net!

Good news! Hoozah!
And although I have red some valid points about gold issues, I must say I am generally very pleased with the change.
It’s things like these (the support and implementation of idea’s) and the “living world” that is starting to set GW2 aside from any other MMO.

Keep at it!!

Why, it all makes sense now!
As leader of a unified group, he’s the one lacking emotion and depth, because he has to make the decisions. He can’t be bothered to get emotionally involved.
Only his Wyld Hunt matters to him!

I do agree on many of the replies posted here.
Besides, he’s a plant, what do you expect? (/sarcasm)

I agree on the bugs.
As a casual player (level 40) I was very anxious to enter this new “improved” dungeon.
Well, we got swarmed aaaalll the way, a guildmate got rooted forever (had to log out) and I got small spikes of lag (partially due to the crowd that was on I think…)

I’m just a casual player and when something doesn’t suit me or I don’t like it, I go do something else. But you guys should open up a bugs topic, where people can report bugs they encounter.

I’m back to leveling to 60 for this weekend. So I can buy some stylish gear.
Good luck with the event still! (and thanks for letting me join by making me level 80. :p)

(btw, I like it when there are no respawns. Why? Feels like a weak mechanism to expand playtime. At least, in a controlled environment like this dungeon…)

Wait or do?

There’s a question pondering my mind for some time now. And I think it’s time I asked it…

Is it best to wait until I reach a high level to start crafting or should I craft along the way and make sure my level is appropriate for my character level?
I know I still need to uncover high level area’s which contain higher level ingredients/materials, but is it worth the hassle (xp/selling/equipment) to craft along while you level up?

Right now I’m almost level 25 and my crafting is about level 23.
And I feel like I should either go full out on crafting and gather/buy materials for a few days or I should wait until the money/resource flow is big enough.

What did/do you do or suggest?

(ps, I choose armor smithing as one of my crafting proffesions and so far the things I can produce are less sufficient/good then the stuff I am getting from rewards or merchants…)
