"No-grind philosophy"

Hey folks,

I just want to take a second to address this topic, because it’s something we state as one of our key philosophies – but don’t often clarify exactly what we mean we say it. And because everyone and their mother has their own unique interpretation of what grind can mean, it’s very simple for this to feel like we’re not following our own guidelines when we build and implement content.

When our company president said we have an anti-grind philosophy way back before Gw2 shipped, and when it has been repeatedly reinforced since then, our statement is simply: “We don’t think you should need to grind to get the best gear and stats in Guild Wars 2”.

So what exactly does that mean:

- The best gear/stats: This means to have statistically the best abilities in the game, you shouldn’t need to, by our definition of the word, grind. This goes for leveling and getting top gear (by our definition that’s ascended gear, legendary being an optional extra thing you can do, but don’t need to do.)

- Grind: To us, grind means being required to do the same boring activity over and over again. In particular, the biggest reference we’re talking about here in traditional MMO’s is having to kill the same creatures over and over again to farm for levels or gear. In Gw2, you can gain exp and levels from a massive variety of game play, game modes, and content types. Same goes for the ability to acquire the gear to build up your characters. Similarly, ascended mats can be acquired from a wide variety of content types and game modes to allow you choice and options so you don’t need to grind to complete those goals. Our new mastery system continues to this promise as well, which we’ll go into more detail on soon.

There are certainly optional activities in the game players can embark on that I think we’d openly accept fall into the category of our definition of more “grindy”. Earning certain unique skins, and in particular some titles absolutely qualify as things we’d put on this list. Legendary weapons have components to them that fall into this category, though we’ll be doing work in HOT to make this much less the case. We feel these are optional choices players don’t need to do, but can if they want, and because they are optional are acceptable within our statement that “Gw2 doesn’t make you grind to have the best gear/stats”. That doesn’t mean we can’t make those activities more fun as well, but when we say “no grind philosophy” we’re not including optional things you can do, but don’t need to do, in our definition.

Hope that helps a bit, that’s our philosophy and definition we’re going by when we make those statements. They may not align to your definition of grind, and that’s ok – we’re fine with that! It’s just important you know what we mean when we make that statement so you can make decisions about how you view Gw2 and judge us by our actions/words.

Thanks again for being so passionate about this topic and the game which ever side of the discussion you fall on. It’s something incredibly important to modern MMO’s and gamers in general, and we truly appreciate the dialogue you all are having on topics like this. It’s what makes better games for all of us.

antigaming path sellers

It’s unpopular to say it but the OP is right. Path buying is about maximizing rewards for time spent. Path buying is not about fighting through the challenge of a dungeon for the sheer fun of it. We do supposedly play these games for the fun of it and not just for virtual rewards that eventually become worthless when we quit the game. If people want to get dungeons done just for achievements and fanfares they could just play Farmland instead.

So if people want to buy, does selling cause a problem? Well the buying/selling does reduce the size of community that runs the paths for fun. In a massive community this is fine but in GW2 the fun runners are a small community anyway and for some paths they are almost wiped out. This can create a viscous circle where new players can’t get full runs, so they buy the paths, and this means even less new players making groups for full runs.

Intervention to stop players from selling runs looks impossible, in practical terms. It isn’t worth any effort by anyone. However I think dungeon sellers/buyers should realize that although their service improves the time/reward ratios for individuals there is an impact on the wider dungeon community.

The key point that you are missing is that “fun” is subjective and one persons playstyle does not get to dictate what is “fun” for another person. You might think it’s “fun” to kill everything in a dungeon, obviously not everyone enjoys that. Some people find it fun to push the limits and see just how fast they can get through something. Others find it fun to solo a dungeon, and as a small reward to themselves profit off their labor. This is a non-issue except that certain people want to enforce their ideals of “fun” on others.

Please understand that you are allowed to trade outside of the BLTP – but you will not receive replacements for lost items or gold. The same goes for selling dungeon runs. CS will not suspend or terminate you for selling runs. We will, however, take action if you take payment and not fulfill your end of the bargain.

Hello Michael, thanks for starting this thread.

If we are allowed to trade items outside of the BLTP, effectively bypassing Evon’s tax, why do we still (after two years) not have a way to securely trade items, as seen in most other MMOs, a popup window where you can see and double check any items up for trade (including gold). The trade only actually happens once both players confirmed and accepted. There should also be an option to deny incoming trade invites right away, to prevent being harassed.

They don’t WANT you to bypass the 15% fee (for economic reasons) and have no intention of making it easier for player to do so. I have yet to understand why those that continually request a player to player trade feature can’t grasp this concept.

BLTP gets you access to EVERYTHING you could get via player to player trade and is an invaluable gold sink for the entire game. These leaves you with 2 reasons to want a player 2 player trade:

  1. To Scam an unwitting player for a lower than market value price.
  2. To bypass the NEEDED 15% fee (gold sink).

If you want a discount trade with someone you trust, the mail trade is there….use at your own risk (the actual subject of this thread).

Care to explain why you’re going in the opposite direction with PvE (specifically, collections)?

PvE is not competitive. And it is not time-gated.

With a tournament theres no time to lose. Every slot used by someone who is more interested in getting AP than having their team win may be a wasted slot.

In PvE that problem simply doesn’t happen. Even more so now that living story is becoming more permanent. You just get to it when you can.

Chris, you may be proud, but there’s been an uproar lately with the latest changes. You’ve also ignored the many complaints about the last ‘feature pack’.

I know you’re required to say those PR things, but are you honestly proud of the amazing team? These guys haven’t even put out half the content other teams managed to, and that’s having taken into account the many skins from the gemstore.

Yes absolutely I am proud of this team. I am sorry that you don’t agree.

This group of ladies and gentlemen has put out amazing content at an amazing rate.

And no i am not talking any PR I am a developer.

So to be clear, yes i am proud of this team, i am proud of our work, i am proud of how we support each other, i am proud of how much we care for the game and the community. You can twist that statement as much as you like but that is my stance.

2 years is a long time for an MMO not to release anything.

I think you are mistaken. We have released content and features in the last two years on a fairly regular basis. Just because the content and/or features were things that you personally did not particularly care for doesn’t mean we didn’t release anything.

Please don’t trivialize the efforts of our design and development staff down to “nothing” because you didn’t like it. It’s fine to comment that you didn’t care for what was released, but don’t pretend like we’ve done nothing here for the past two years.

Market conditions change all the time. It was rare before and now can drop from bosses. There’s been no change in supply on the market, just speculators getting out ASAP while potential buyers are lowering their asking price.

As for those who bought it when it as a rare chest drop, it’s tough to be on the bleeding edge. When CD/DVD/Blu-ray players first came out they cost hundreds of dollars. Now Blu-ray are like $70 and connect to Netflix and Hulu now over wireless.

Going the Diablo III method and nuking the TP while simultaneously super-buffing drops? It seemed to work in that game.

Might be more fun to remove weapons and armor from the TP and turn it into a commodity exchange for crafting materials and the like. Minis, skins, consumables and other stuff can probably stay too. I like to be able to find my own stuff, as long as the chance is reasonable to find it.

I guess if ANet did the same for precursors by making them easier to obtain and cheaper then they shouldn’t call them ‘Legendary’.

I’m sure ANet knows they’ll lose a lot of revenue from making the contracts easy to obtain and what not. That’s the point. You play this game to try to get these cosmetics and items for your account.

I think it’s a good time to sell them now?

You’re close.

Think of the gem/gold exchange like this:

There are two boxes. One has gold in it, the other has gems in it. If you want to take some gold out of the box, you have to put gems in the other box. If you want to take out gems, you have to put gold in the other box.

You can’t put something in without taking something out, and you can’t take something out without putting something in. How much of each depends on how full the boxes are. Right now there’s a lot of gold in one box, but only a few gems in the other box. So in order to take out one gem you have to put in a lot of gold. But on the other hand, if you put just one gem into the box you can take out a lot of gold.

It’s funny seeing you people put this article down, because I read it and found myself nodding my head to a lot of it.

Putting it down because the perspective of a hardcore, experienced MMO player would NOT be to QQ about how hard it is to get a legendary … and QUIT over it since it’s mostly just aesthetic. Sounds more like the credentials of a hardcore RPer.

Consider there are games a decade ago that most hardcore MMO players would have played where they literally had to raid for hundreds of hours to get a BiS bit of gear; a legendary pails in comparison to what any real hardcore, experienced player would have experienced.

This game was marketed as a no-grind game (because Anet doesn’t make grindy games), with horizontal progression for cosmetic rewards as end game. I bought into that hype and I’m not at all happy with the direction this game has taken since then. Everything, absolutely everything has gotten more grind as time goes by, and we’re still stuck with either RNG your mats away to obtain a precursor, pull out your credit card, or grind your face off.

But, legendaries are largely cosmetic. Admittedly, that has become slightly less true now that they are account bound, but you can get the same level item with way less grinding. Legendaries have always been there for people who like the grind which is why you can get everything except the cosmetics elsewhere.

Free teleport on bank and back ? No thanks

It’s almost like you can already do that using wvw maps and their crafting stations and guild npc’s.

wvwvw=queue, sPvP=without queue

How many servers do you know of that regularly have queues for all 4 wvw maps? Or ever, for that matter?

There are a few. And wouldnt this queue-less thing be a nice advantage for lower pop servers? All the more reason for people to roll on a lower pop server i say.

Bank and TP aren’t in the HotM not because people don’t want them to be there, but because too many people would like them to be there!
If bank and TP were in the HotM then there would be no cost of traveling to LA to gain access to banck and TP.
Moreover, Bank Access Express, TP Express, golem bankers etc. would lose all their value, meaning even less money to Anet.

Given the fact that traveling to the mist is free, just place your character in LA and then queue up from there. Or just stay in HotM and then take the portal to LA.

Simple test to verify critical chance scaling:

1) Go to starter area (~ level 5) with about 10 critical chance. Attack level 1 white critters. Notice how most of your hits are not criticals.

2) Go to high level area (level > 40) with about 10 critical chance. Attack level 1 white critters. Notice how most of your hits are criticals.

Is there a way perhaps the living story could not change the maps within the story missions? There is nothing to fix as It’s not “broken” as is evidenced by many players that actually have them.

Now if you want to request that they change the method (or add another), that is a valid discussion.

TBH, if casual “poor” players (which includes me) could get a Legendary easily, they would not be very “Legendary”.

Work as a sound designer

Sound Designer

Next

Hi there Johan. Name’s Cody, I’m a sound designer here at ANET. I’m glad you’ve got the big dream to work at a sound designer, and that’s exactly what started me on the path to audio department and working here for Guild Wars 2.

How is it to work here? Well, it’s wonderful to have the creative freedom to do my best to enhance the game through sound design and implementation. Speaking for myself, on an ordinary day I’m either designing and integrating new content for the game, planning for the future, enhancing existing game content or working closely with my team and with our awesome audio QA (Keenan) on how best to achieve our design goals.

Unfortunately, I’m still rather new to the team, and thus I’ve never been in a position to hire or make any decisions in the hiring process, so I’d have to leave it to someone else on the team to chime in on what they’re looking for when they’ve expanded our team.

Personally, when I was in school for audio, I was interested in rounding out my base knowledge of digital audio: signal flow, sound reinforcement, recording techniques, acoustics, analogue to digital conversion, working in a DAW, DSP and side-chaining, mixing, editing audio tracks, mastering. It’s been invaluable to me having an understanding of these things as a foundation.

The part I couldn’t learn in school was the problem of taking audio assets and getting them into the game. Doing so has got to be different everywhere you look, so not only can I not get into it, but it might not do you any good anyway.

What got me working here as a sound designer wasn’t necessarily my background alone—I actually started out as quality assurance here. Being familiar with testing, and getting in there and digging up and filing solid audio bugs was what finally led me where I am. So if nothing else opens up for you, that might yet be a viable option for you to realize your big dream!

Thanks for writing in and showing your interest, Johan!
