ITT: People who don’t understand game mechanics

CC’s are hardly a problem in the way the people in this thread are describing.
Let me run this down for you based on a few different scenarios:

- First of all, you’re in a PvP game-mode. If you aren’t carrying any stunbreaks then you’re either an idiot or you are good enough to not need any stunbreaks at which point you would have no reason to be complaining here. Put some stunbreaks on your bar, seriously.

- Zerg/Frontline: You should have amble sources of stability, be it your own or from allies, if you’re trying to frontline in a zerg. Plus you know, stunbreaks. But hey, lets say your stab got corrupted or stripped, and you were already knee deep in the action and none of your allies have any stab to give you (so, bad gameplay is what I’m trying to say here). BAM CCs! Oh no, what do boss?! Hey remember those stunbreaks? Use one and dodge. If you do them at the same time, you will be evading and won’t get hit with subsequent CCs. Cool right!?

- Zerg/Backline (or even mid I suppose): But boss, I’m a filthy shoutreaper pleb who copied my build off some website after I searched Google for “gw2 epicz dps RvR lord of death xD” Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! First, remember that stunbreak and dodge trick? It works on non-frontline builds too! Woah! Another good trick is to well… be better at positioning so you aren’t exposing yourself to ability to get CC locked. I don’t have a passive-aggressive snarky way to say that, sorry.

- Roaming/Small scale: insert comment about how if you don’t have stunbreaks on your bar it’s your own fault stop being terrible, go back to afk zerg fights, the reason why " X thing is OP I got killed by roamers using it" situation occurs is because roamers are better players than you, improve yourself or stop complaining, etc.

- Getting focused: Multiple players used coordination to focus down a single target, by timing their abilities together to CC in succession and (probably) rip defensive boons throughout the process, using multiple cooldowns of their own to retaliate against your cooldowns. So you got 1v4ed or however many people it was. Okay. “But working together is OP!!! No fair!!!” Get out of your zerg then, by the same logic, zerging to kill other players is just as OP as people working together to target focus. You’re right, lets make it so any allies who get within 1200 range of eachother get removed from WvW, because it’s OP and unfair that people can work together.

- B-b-but X is OP and somehow I’m relating that to stuns for no apparent reason: That has zero relevance to the topic at hand, and is what is referred to as a straw man fallacy. I don’t care if you think warrior is "just too strong " because they can use Endure Pain or Berserker’s Stance and your condi shout reaper can’t kill them in 4 seconds by your own inability to dodge and mashing your utilities resulting in what would normally result in people dying with zero required skill on your part, but the warrior was immune and you’re angry. How the kitten does that have any relevance to anything here? Go back to Candy Crush if the game is too hard for you.

Anything else I missed?

And for the record, I’ve done it all. I mostly solo/duo roam, usually on base thief, with power reaper being my most played alt besides that, either roaming or occasionally following a tag. I used to command, I played in a guild comp/GvG guild as both frontline guard and zerker staff ele, and I’ve experimented with the “run three healbots and two condi reapers to afk kill groups 4 times your size with zero effort”.

Just getting that out there before anyone tries to say something about not understanding what it’s like playing as “insert metabattle build here” that honestly, if you’re having problems while playing anything from that website, then PvP game modes might not be for you.

Almost anyone can one-shot bad thieves with 11k hp.

Ding ding ding. And it took exactly 4 button presses to kill two people. All on something with relatively high defensive stats. It SHOULDN’T be that easy.

D/P 3 needs an init cost increase, a cast time increase, or a damage reduction (or a combination thereof)
So in that vein, D/P does need nerfed and other weapon sets buffed as well to allow for a more equal field amongst the weapons.

This however is assuming the other professions are nerfed/changed as well as to not completely push Thief out of viability.

As someone who has mained and exclusively played S/P (yes, Sword Pistol) Thief since release (since its my favorite playstyle and I’m not the type to reroll to something else simply because its easier to go another route), I find it laughable that any of you think you have any right to complain about not getting to be as strong as you want to be. I want base S/P Thief to be viable, which is a pipe dream at this point, but yeah I’m sure it is so awful for your alacrity to not allow you to have as many blocks dodges and invulns as you have now so you wont have as many ways to make up for making mistakes or not playing well. Oh how hard it must be.

Server loyalty

How about this:

  • You get rewarded based on years within your current server (like a character birthday)
  • Scaling reward based on badges/ranks earned (possibly not counting any earned through EotM)
  • Max reward threshold should be reasonably attainable for all kinds of play styles within WvW (players who zerg/guild group/etc. earn more badges/ranks than those players who play in smaller groups)

With this system, players who remain loyal to servers get rewarded as long as they are active and contributing players. It also means players who may have transferred at one point in time may still get rewards, just not as soon as players who have remained on one server.

I personally am a strong supporter of server loyalty, and have been on my original server for close to three years now. I understand people’s reasons for leaving servers and if that’s what it takes to make the game fun for a person than that is understandable, however sticking to one server (especially lower servers who tend to go through many rough times) is an accomplishment in of itself. Players who chose to stick it though and not take the easy way out do deserve some sort of reward in my opinion. Whether that means we should be getting exclusive skins I’m not really sold on, however something else similar to the suggestion of extra gold drop in WvW would be very reasonable along with a title perhaps.

I think it’s funny how there are people saying s/p is easy or takes no skill. Against new players? Sure, but so is anything else. Against good players it’s easy? Lolno. Sorry but it’s far from “press 3 to win”, especially considering that 3 on d/p carries it just as significantly if not moreso. A thief playing s/p and doing well deserves far more props than a thief using d/p and doing well, d/p is by far the lowest skill requirement build thief has with incredibly high reward for the low amount of risk.

Fun fact, if ANet increased the toughness of monsters in PvE and lowered vitality, it would completely solve the issue of “we want to play low risk tanky condition builds but still do as much damage as full zerker players who actually have to be good at the game to get rewards”

T1 Roamer In Need of Transfer Advice.

I have two accounts, one on FA and I moved my other to Anvil Rock about a month ago. T2 is just a blob fest to me I guess and ques ques ques….What I like about AR is that I can sign in, enter any map I please, and just roam. You will get ganked from time to time by a wild group of blood thirsty thiefs, every server has them regardless of what tier you’re on, but it is rare from what I’ve seen down in T6 so far. AR is fully capable of taking 15 players, no tag and wiping a group twice their size easily. The players awareness is pretty impressive. They don’t use teamspeak much and don’t rag on you if you are not using it. What I like is that you can come across a small crew of 3-5 and just hang out with them without even saying a word to each other and take camps and towers.

I’m sure I’ll get hate from T2, but the fights down here are more fun and epic. I haven’t seen much blobbing tbh from the T6 crews. It feels like launch honestly, where fights were somewhat even and small guilds could pull off some awesome tactics. Battles at towers and keeps are amazing, I’m loving it so far.

And for my final insult, the roamers are better down here in my experience. I’m not sure if they are so use to fighting outnumbered or been roaming so long they just know how to handle their class, but then again my main is on FA and hands down they have some awesome fighters on that server so hanging around some of those guys you have a comfort zone that they’ll carry the fight against the other T2 groups.

RambitsHouse summed up AR pretty well. Outside of reset you’ll normally see a queue on 1 map during primetime, but even then a lot of the time there isn’t a tag up, just a bunch of small groups and solo roamers.

During NA prime you will see a lot more guild groups and havock squads but outside of NA prime is a roamers paradise. You will find plenty of 1v1-3 fights.

I do want to warn you, a lot of people come down from tier 1-2 thinking they are going to be hot kitten and end up getting their kitten handed to them. I’ve played on every tier and bronze just has a lot more action for solo roamers so the people you run into are going to be a little more experienced at it.

I can confirm, this is very spot on. One of the best things about lower tiers is no one takes themselves quite as seriously as up higher. You won’t find people demanding you stay in a tower all day to guard it and you won’t have anyone ridiculing or telling you you have to run specific builds. Play how you want, we are down here because we want to have fun and we want to have fun in the way we like rather than being bound to the expectations of someone else.
We do typically queue a map during NA prime and we have some very solid guild groups as well as many smaller roaming and havok groups. Action can be found almost any time of day, although from probably around noon to midnight PST is definitely the best time for roaming here with plenty of action nearly anywhere you go.

In reality, it isn’t nearly enough of a nerf and it will still be one of the strongest builds in the game.

That said, the way they are doing it is pretty dumb, it should have been a might duration nerf on the sigil and on blast fields. Lower duration means might becomes a boon more meant for bursting rather than a sustainable over the top damage source, aka enforcing the idea of risk/reward.

S/D no longer viable

Honestly I’m not entirely sure how they SHOULD have gone about with balancing, and I’m not going to pretend to be an expert on such either, but I think a better way to deal with the problem could have been through changes to air/fire when used in conjunction. Say they have their respective ICDs when used alone, but when used together they both have non-shared ICDs of around 10 seconds. It would mean that you would have less sustained damage increase through procs (3 air price per 9 seconds yields higher overall damage than 1 air + 1 fire every 10 seconds) but still allow for the small burst. Aside from that the only thing I could see is the removal of Strength runes from PvP. I think both those changes in conjunction would still allow a retaining of viability, but it would tone down the builds that abuse them for both high sustain, survival, and damage.

As for S/P, I’ve mained it since release and it is by far my favorite weapon set in the game, but the talk a while back of separating the stun from the flurry (such as how FS+LS are) would do a lot to help the set. It would really allow for setting up bursts better and just higher versatility and skill cap of the set to really allow for some combos that just aren’t possible now.

The change was for the most part justified. While it makes no sense that FS be blockable and LS be unblockable while requiring FS to hit, I think having the requirement of FS hitting is a good thing to help level out the damage of the set. I didn’t really have much of al issue with S/D until the 2/0/0/6/6 Strength Rune Air/Fire Sigil meta, in that it allowed far too much damage for the amount of survivability that acro/trickery together allowed when paired with S/D.

The only other thing I’d like to mention is that even with all this “S/D and D/P unplayable so bad not viable” talk that is around, how do you think it is for people who prefer S/P, which was already borderline unviable before the patch. S/D and D/P still have it easy compared to S/P – just food for thought.

You can’t, the stairs to a tower wall are a complete teleport dead zone and a “break” in pathing purposely so you can not just teleport up tower/keep walls from the outside.

What Runes Do You Use and Why?

S/P I use Pack in WvW and Ogre in PvP
Pack for the extra swiftness and for the AoE boons for my group when in fights, along with the precision boost helps a lot. I use Ogre for the damage bonus as well as the rock dog helps give some minor additional damage plus it soaks up some incoming damage.

For P/D I use Krait for the bleed duration and the extra conditions on elite usage helps a lot for condition bursting and covering up bleeds.

Been on AR since release so I may be a tad bit biased here, but AR truly is a great server to play on.

If you are someone who enjoys smaller groups, doesn’t mind the lack of zergs, or who just wants to get away from the serious business attitude of larger servers, then Anvil Rock would make you an excellent home.

My own guild’s personal views are more towards the idea that we hate meta, we hate the easy builds that everyone runs, we hate people who run the specific guild comps (and require them) and who aren’t willing to fight outside of the hive mentality.

We value the players that think for themselves, who show initiative to get better through increasing ones skill, not by running an easier build. We value the players that prefer to stray from the meta in favor of playing what they like and what they think is fun. This doesn’t mean we can’t or won’t play strong builds, but our playstyle and personality doesn’t revolve around running the current “best” spec. We value the players who are helpful to others, who are friendly and kind to the people around them and who don’t take themselves or the game too seriously. If you die, who cares it happens! We aren’t perfect and we don’t expect anyone to be perfect, all we expect is that you put out your best fight and have fun doing so.

If you are one of these players and that describes you, then Anvil Rock would gladly welcome you. DSCM may only represent a small portion of the server, but I’d like to think that the rest of the server feels the same way about what our server represents, which is having fun and being yourself over being a tryhard and forcing yourself into a mold of what is “best”.

AR and proud, as I always will be.

I had been messing with P/P venomshare for a little while and it worked decently for getting them out fast. You can combine body shot with unload to help ensure the venoms land, as for the healing venom if the one second cast time is correct, that won’t really help quite as much

Okay, honest question here, but how does one go about getting those who use exploits (such as hacks) to get what they deserve, since there isn’t a report function in WvW for that and we can’t say anything here on the forums that are accusatory?

I feel like there should be something in place for taking care of such issues.

Well AR and GoM i’d like to say this week was fun, but it wasn’t.

However your towers and keeps got my upscale leveled up, so thanks for that. Best fight we’ve had all week was today in AR BL at SW tower. Great job there, that was a lot of fun.

10/30/0/0/30 – S/P in sPvP, but I also have a bunch of other random hipster builds that I use, just less often.
25/30/0/0/15 – D/D in WvW, sometimes change around with D/P and S/P, but WvW is so hilariously broken that D/D burst is all I really need to drop the majority of people I see in WvW.

PvE I have same as WvW, but I use S/P alot more.

S/P is very powerful once you understand the GroundLock feature (glues the player ot the ground until animation stops) and teleporting. S/P is can be very difficult for some, that’s why many Thieves do not play it.

I have played S/P since release, but ArenaNet continues to nerf viable aspects of S/P to tame the Dagger thieves while never thinking “Oh yea, we forgot 1% of the players play S/P. Oh well they’re get over it”.

In all honesty, just do what all the other thieves do: use a Dagger — because ArenaNet isn’t done screwing S/P players. I joke not when I say: they do not care about S/P setup because it is the “1% Build” in the game. There for no time will be invested into the setup, or even given a second thought.

Sword/Pistol. How we love you so, but your creators didn’t love you back…..enough.

While a good enough idea in theory, this trait seems to get you killed more often than not when playing against other players. The fact that it can proc in the middle of an attack, or when the revealed debuff is up makes it borderline useless unless your strategy involves just standing around taking hits. Combined with it being a minor trait, so out of your control, it makes it even more detrimental.

So how can we go about fixing it? I have a couple ideas.

1) Make the trait unlock a secondary profession skill (f2). Instead of the skill proctoring automatically, when your health is dropped below that 25% (while traited of course), the skill would become available. This way, you could activate it when you want to, as long as the conditions are met (it being off CD and health being low enough).

2) Give it a separate stealth stack. Certain skills such as Mass Invisibility from a Mesmer give a different stealth buff than what we utilize, and if Last Refuge were to be made into a separate stealth buff from normal stealth, it would allow us to enter stealth regardless of the debuff.

I think that combining the two would be the best choice to fix the trait. That way it would actually give us control over our trait, plus it would allow for the trait to be a useful method of escape/stealth, which is what it is meant to be.

On the idea of it adding a profession skill, other traitlines could also utilize a similar concept, where depending on your spec you could have different profession skills. I think that sort of revision on the class would be a breath of fresh air and could really help make us more useful on separate fronts than the few cookie-cutter builds we have.
