What's wrong with vertical progression?

on WOW do a lvl 70 dungeon with equipment designe for lvl 70 chars, and do lvl 80 dungeon with equiopment designed for lvl 80 chars, is the same experience! no real challenge. This is the trap of the vertical progression after the max level.

Is not a trap, players arent stupid to not notice that. People know it but they want that because it doesnt matter if its the same, it feels like your character is evolving. Its the same in everything else, in movies the hero does not go and kill directly the boss, he has to go through trash, mini bosses, get weapons and then kill the boss. Or in Gran Turismo and Need for speed game, you get a new, shiny car? great, now go and race against new and shiny cars.

Horizontal progression let you choose what do you wanna do. Vertical progression not so much. Both have pros and cons. One thing against horizontal progression, is that every dungeon you dont want to do ot every skin you dont like, means content wasted by the designers of the game.

There is nothing wrong with vertical progression, i played a lot of games with vertical progression in the past, but the problem is when you add vertical progression in a game that was advertised without it (or is better to say, without a mandatory gear grind).

If someone tell you that a new drink is the thing you will love if you hate coke, and then the new drink taste EXACLTY like a coke, someone will surely love it, but the original buyers the ones that thrust on the advertise, have all the rights to be concerned.

Well, thats a very good point I can’t disagree.

The potential bad part of vertical progression isn’t the progression part, but rather that “gating” is often associated with it, where a player may be effectively locked out of game content if they haven’t vertically-progressed enough.

I have stopped played WoW many times, for periods of 3 months to a year, and I always can find a group using their Looking for Dungeon Tools. In MMOs is impossible to stay locked out of the progression, because there will be always people at your level, or behind your level, or way ahead of you.

The idea of the entire server population progressing at the same time and leaving people behind is just that, and idea. In reality it doesnt work that way. I have never in all my life playing MMOs being unable to progress because “everyone else is already ahead of me”.

That’s true for WoW, because WoW has always been easy-mode (and even then, you couldn’t enter Serpentshrine without doing a lengthy key quest, even needed key for UBRS and Molten Core).

In EQ, on the other hand, you needed to be flagged, and since there were no instances, guilds would deliberately prevent other guilds from being able to get flagged. Lineage-2 had an explicit lock-out system that was pvp-related, if you’re in the wrong clan you can only feed the enemy.

You dont need keys in WoW anymore, and I dont talk about how easy is the game, im talking about how easy is to find a group to go to a dungeon to get gear to stay ahead of the leveling progression in WoW. I SWtor is the same, and its the same in every other game. Right now, I can create a new account in Swtor, DDO, Lotro, even GW1 and start doing quest, dungeons or whatever is required to progress vertically.

(obviouslly in GW1 the “vertical” part of the game is over in a week or two)

Players who hate vertical progression are just those players in the wrong group. They are players who favor action-games than rpgs during their console-gaming phases in life.

There are reasons why RPG-fans like me hate games like Tomb Raider, Ninja Gaiden and other action-games. If people realised, Tomb Raider isn’t a RPG-genred even when you role-played as Lara Croft. RPGs isn’t just about “role-playing a character” but the progressive nature that develop the characters. RPG = Dedication > Player skills.

I like to progress the character like in storybooks than having a non-progressive character that makes stages harder through progression. At the same time, I want realism of the world. The “best items” have real rewarding functions. The “philosopher stone” in Harry Potter and “ring” in Lord of The Rings novels are not just aesthetics.

RPGs are about vertical progression, Dungeon and Dragons, the father of computer RPGs, has, along with a very nice journey, vertical progression through levels, XP and +items. And when you think you reach the top in D&D you start gaining epic levels, and then divinity.

No dont get me wrong Crysto im just wondering but i must also counter your argument if you consider lore then ore doesnt have a animal and monster atrraction property either.

Yes it does, at least in Dungeons and Dragons, where dragons have lairs with huge piles of golds. They also keep a lot of treasures like the armor and weapons of the adventurers who try to kill them or steal their gold.

MMOS:

WoW classic since launch, BC, lich king, Cata, Pandas.- addicted for 7 years. Dont play it anymore.
Swtor since launch— love it for two weeks… got tired after two months.
DDO— love dungeons and dragons but the game wasnt good for me.
Lotro— clunky interface for me.
Eve Online— its excel.
Warhammer— played for two months. Boring after initial zones.
Guild Wars 1— fun gameplay but I was addicted to WoW at the time.

love or hate: I love GW, even with the new direction (I stayed at FotM lvl 3 for the moment), I have been left behind in the leveling curve in WoW and other games, and really its not the end of the world as some people want us to believe.

That’s not the problem I really had, guess I didn’t convey it. Yes, I understand why we can’t target PvE mobs from safety, free loots all day, yeah, I know and understand that, what tic’s me off is I WAS on the same ledge as the Vet and I got invulnerable invulnerable invulnerable or Obscured with clear line of sight.

Im sorry to add confusion to your initial post. I know you are frustrated and I dont want to make you feel annoyed or angry.

Lets all hope Anet can fix it soon for the sake of our keyboards, who sometimes are the victims of our frustration ( I have replaced a lot of keyboards and mouses)

I just don't Understand

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

luchifer.6401

Its because some mobs cant reach you, and its to avoid exploits (shooting a vet from a safe spot he cant reach). The problem is that sometime interferes with fair gameplay. I havent found myself in that situation very often, and when it happens, I just change to my sword and attack the enemy from closer range, or just try to realign my character.

I know its frustrating, but if they havent implemented that we could use some vets as pinhata loots instead of getting a challenging fight.

What's The Point of Guilds?

Given the ease of finding groups by spamming “LFG”, the mediocre upgrades from influence, lack of end game raids and the ability to have cross server members. I ask this.

What is the point of a Guild in Guild Wars 2 other than a convenient chat room?

Exactly, its a chat room with friends… just like every other game where, believe it or not, not everyone raids.

Sounds and notifications are going to cause problems with Guilds.

Guilds can have hundreds of people, so that means you can expect one to log in or out pretty much once a minute or more. That is already plenty. But what about if there’s a timed event, like the Lost Shores? You would literally have the game crashing because hundreds of your friends and guildies would be logging in seconds from each other, if not at the same time.

Never had been a problem in WoW, and that game has 14 million people playing it.

Guild Wars IS an MMO

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: luchifer.6401

luchifer.6401

It all depends on the viewpoint.. in GW2 if all you do is your personal story, running to instance to instance not even looking the general chat and having no guild, avoiding people on purpose.. then yes, is not an MMO, its a single player online game.. but if you do W3 all day and play objectives with a lot of people, or just play in the outside zones… then sure its an MMO. .

same applies to GW1.. except replace W3 for guild activity.

1. let us use sword in off hand too.
2. let us heal the pet with our attacks (a very small healing percentage with criticals for example)
3. pet rally when we kill the enemy that killed our beloved companion.
4. lower aoe pet damage when fighting bosses.
5. let us control our pets for fun (like “eyes of the beast” in WoW), so we can use the pet instead of the character.. especially useful if we could control a raven to scout a place… of course this would leave our bodys vulnerable to damage and it would have a range restriction, so we wont travel long distances as our animal companion.

Hi, I want to know if there is a way to counter the inmunity of some bosses or even regular enemies to physical abilities, because its rendering my build useless if I cant kick or stomp a boss or a veteran enemy and some regular enemies are inmune to it too (PvE wise). And I dont think its because the mob granted himself stability because I tried my abilities everytime they are off cooldown, and I can move a boss with a kick 1 in 10-15 tries maybe.

edit… world pve isnt a problem (except for some elementals), but dungeons are a pain for my build.

Actual Raids or Mindless Zergs? Whats better?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: luchifer.6401

luchifer.6401

Mindless zergs allow people to kitten out…go mining nodes…stand around do nothing except tap and kill a few enemies and get the reward.

Thats the other thing thats bad about this system, lazy people not doing their share. Raids at leat do better to fight this part.

Typical type of comments I left WoW for.

You tell people to try to be grown up.. and yet you spout of something like this. Don’t get the logic.

I’d rather not have WoW-style Raids here. I prefer the ‘mindless zerg’ as you call it.

No gear score checks. No listening to ‘OHMAGAWD MY DEEPS YO’.

Just good ol’ fashioned fun.

I came to Play. Not to Work.

They could divide the island into hot spots and assign players diffrent tasks, thus having fewer people on one spot. A massive zerg is just no fun. A raid of 20 people (no gear score) with tasks to do, beats a mindless zerg.

Cool… Hardcore player playing a casual game with the only endgame having game breaking issues and the dungeon fights being poorly designed.

So play something else? I don’t know why you expected this to be hardcore.

Because its an MMO and most MMOs have some decent content for non-casual players? Honestly I’m not even an “hardcore player” I’m just a person who likes to get on for more than an hour and a half twice a week. Why don’t casuals go back to playing farmville or ipod apps instead?

I love guild wars 2 and think it has great potential. I’m just bored atm because theres not much to do now that im level 80.

Ranger Vs Warrior Ranged...

in Ranger

First, ranger isnt the same as ranged class… For example, Aragorn from the Lord of the Rings was a ranger.

Second, yes the rifle is powerful, but you are only taking the weapon into account. The ranger has traits and skills availiable for ranged combat, while the warrior is pretty limited in that aspect.

Third, Anet is changing some of the ranger abilities, so who knows what will happen in the future.

Maybe its not that different after all.

I prefer paying subscription cause then devs at least worry about their players quitting, feel like anet is just gonna try to make their next expansion look awesome and then forget about players for another year. Im still patriotic about anet beeing best devs but i cant keep lying to myself forever… I stopped PVE once i understood that tutorial bosses are best bosses in whole game, stopped wvwvw when i understood that nothing matter cause the best server will always be with most players at most times, and now PVP is starting to let me down cause it starts to become build wars.

Build Wars? I suppose getting epic raid gear to steamroll players is the best option, like all the other MMOs do?

Guild Wars was always about finding the build that suit you best.

I wont even comment on the tutorial bosses…

Well, if the guildie responds to you like that, the system doesnt have anything to do with that.. in fact, thank the system because it let you found someone undesirable at this early stage of the game and not when he is promoted to be an officer. Many guilds in other games have been destroyed because of people ninja the guild bank or similar things. I for example, am not a bad WoW player and some guilds wanted me to play with them, but as I played with real life friends, I never leaved my guild (I run raids with other people but still in my guild). This system allows me to run a dungeon with other guilds (having asked permission to my GM of course), and represent their guild while doing so if they want (especially usefull when you are doing some WvW and your beloved guild is focused on PvE content).

More abilities for each weapon

luchifer.6401

What difference does it make if he is level 14 or 80? the game could use more skills. Yes, you can attune as an elementalist, but why should if the traits encourage you to stay in one element? If you guys want to ask for dungeon content and pvp balance, create a topic and post about it. The OP is about more skills per weapon (and by the way… that belongs to the suggestion forum).

Having said that, try to find a weapon that you enjoy, or a good combination of skills. For example on my warrior I also have kick, bolas, and stomp as secondary abilities, to have more abilities to use and it rocks. In general, try to use less situational skills.

edit.. by the way, by level 30 you will have all the slots unlocked except for the elite ones, and that even depends if you have been hunting skill points.

Why can't I get myself to play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: luchifer.6401

luchifer.6401

One thing I would add is some kind of “traditional” quests along the hearts and dynamic events (I dont know if they are already there in our personal story, im currently level 32 and havent choose my allegiance between scholars, whispers and vigil).

For example, currently we can talk to someone to escort him from point A to point B. It would be nice if we receive a mail from someone in distress, and tell us to escort him or to kill 10 skritts. perhaps in a daily basis and according to our level, for people who are used to the “traditional” style.

And one thing I did not enjoy is to use weapons or having a skill to run faster, they should get rid of that and give us a passive speed bonus either according to our level or via upgrades in our gear. So we dont “lose” one of our slots. This way we wont see warriors running with their banners, or thiefs jumping with their skills, etc. I dont believe Anet wanted us to do that.

And, last, I want to congratulate the game designers, because even if the world is MASSIVE, I always see people even in the least visited cave under the ocean.
