Dolan,
I see you eager to jump and bite without really reading the post.
It started by specifying many of the features I like about the game that are different than in WoW, and I like them as they are here.

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough describing what really bothers me.
I enjoy the dungeons to some extent, as well as that I’m not being forced all the time to play a specific role. I’d like to have a mixture of that, instead of the current state of mandatory zerg warr or go do fractals with your guild, since other dungeon groups are hard to come by.

And as I said, I’ll try out the guild event stated here by jski, and if it won’t be a satisfying enough experience, I will look into another game.

You don’t have to attack and bite. I do agree that not all games suit all people.
Perhaps, this one isn’t suitable for me.

Quick note people: LFG vs LFM

The thing is that since there is no built in game tool to form a group, you either have to be in the map the dungeon is in (and that limits you to the people in your server), in LA (again, limits you to the people in your server), or focusing your browser.

The people whispering you to form a group are the ones who probably doing the daily in ORR and want to do CoF, but they want to continue the daily while the group isn’t ready.
They see that you LFG and try their luck.
I think it’s them being lazy to start the group themselves.

Why do raids seem unattractive to people?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

omerk.2709

I think it’s a matter of personal preference.
I for one, miss raids in this game.
I don’t like PvP, and rerunning fractals over and over and over again is getting really boring.
With dungeon tokens provide specific gear sets, there is no reason to do dungeons you don’t need except for once to get the achievement or whatever you want from that particular run.

This game is totally missing end game group content. Camping orr waiting for a chapion event to start isn’t nearly as good as raids.

Before quiting WoW, I loved the pug raid difficulty, and while being close to the real guild raid thing, it still didn’t spoil the challenge of gruild raiding.
I miss that a lot.
I miss the tank-healer-dps roles which let you focus on your role.

Again, a matter of personal interest.
I find this lacking, some people find this an advantage.
I don’t see another way for someone like me besides finding a new game to play pretty soon, as I don’t see any real news with the future dungeons, nor do I see how they make up for the lack of raid content.

Class balances on Feb 26 ?

kokiman, it’s basicly correct, with one excpetion.
Suppose now a group of 5 full berserk exotic gear warriors takes down a boss in 60 seconds, and a group of 5 berserk reangers take the same boss down in 3 minutes, we wouldn’t want the 5 warrior nerfed to 3 minutes. We would like to see a group of people with the same gear output the same damage.

There will be differences as warriors outsurvive rangers by far, which is a natural difference, and the ranger far superior in ranged combat. The dps ourput should be the same for similar gear.
I belive that is all OP asks for.

Got 2 characters at level 80, a guardian and a ranger. I enjoy the solo combat with both.
I liked leveling a lot, it was a log of fun.
I liked not having to go to the quest giver to return quests, I liked the dynamic events while leveling, I liked the level adjustments, and the personal story.
I also liked not having to go through PvP with level 80 characters just griefing level 20 characters.
I don’t like pvp.

Mounts are missing totally. The waypoint system isn’t even close to be a replacement. It’s way too expensive to use instead of a mount, and you still need to walk from the waypoint to the target location.
I also don’t like is the dungeons system.
Starting with forming a group. You either need to in LA or the map the dungeon is on, or alt+tab to your browser for gw2lfg.com.
Not being able to play while looking for a group (suppose you’re runing dredghunt cliffs and want to do TA) since there is no built in group finder is a major downside to dungones.
Then there are the dungeons themselves. While the format of no tank and healer can be an advantage, in reallity it’s not really an advantage. It should have spared the endless “lf healer/tank last spot” with a tank char being the most wanted, but instead it made the berserk warrior a must have class in order to form a quick group.
When it comes to exp mode dungeons, the problem worsens, with tokens and gear being uniqe to to a dungeon, so again, if you like that type of content, better level a zerg warrior and look for running mostly CoF path 1.

I played WoW for 4.5 years, and found the tank-healer-dps trinity to be pretty solid.
You needed to know your job, you needed to know tacts, what you can avoid and what not. You needed to know your class and when to pop cooldowns.
GW2 is all about knowing how and when to dodge. That’s basicly the challenge.
Gear progression has come in the back door with fractals.
While this is a nice dungeon, it’s still just that. it has the overall amount of bosses that a raid has, but it’s not a raid. It’s fun, but if you start your 2nd run of the session and get a fractal once again, it’s the same fractal and the same boss. Even if it’s now 1 level higher than 20 minutes ago.

So with gear progression in the game, and only 1 place to actually enjoy it, and with gear seeking limited to the dungeon that gives the tokens you want, you’re pretty much restricted.

This makes dungeons pretty boring to run, and for 2 runs, you’ll probably spend 2 hours including finding the groups.

You can also scan ORR maps for a champion event to become available, but that’s also gets boring when done the 20th day in a row.

There is no sence of progress.
The bottom line is I’m really missing a raid like content.

Is there anything else I can do appart from pvp that can make up for that?
I like the game, but it seems like unless a proper random dungeon finder is introduced, and many more dungeons (at least 3-4 new ones every 3 months), it’s pretty much going to be the same every time.

I looked into it and considered my budget. An upgrade will come shortly.
However, this does not solve the problem of having to upgrade every time a major patch is released.
The game worked fine before 1/28. It’s not playable now.
I can’t afford, nor do I want to upgrade every time Anet release new content.

Since 1/28 patch, the game is not playable.
The lag is horrible, and it’s not a network lag.
My machine is very old, but it meets the minimum requirements.

I concluded I need to upgrade my machine.
My question is if this is something we’ll encounter in the future?
Will there be another patch that forces a machine upgrade?
if so, this game becomes more expansive than WoW.

Before the patch, my ingame performance was pretty good. not the best image quality, but deffinetly good quality and fine graphics. no lags in dungeons. a good experience overall.
Since the patch I only do the daily and even this has become a nightmare.

BeardManly.2140,
I also considered AMD 8 cores for my next cpu due to budget issues.
I investigatd some and found the following problems:
1. performance. 4 cores intel perform better than 8 cores AMD in terms of FPS (when the GPU isn’t part of the cpu).
2. price. There is no big difference between intel i7 and amd 8 cores. At least in Israel.
3. motherboard selection. This also may be an Israel only issue, but the selection of motherboards for i7 and i5 is way better than for AMD. This also means that it’s more likely to find a board that has ddr3 1600MHz support as well as 1333MHz support for intel cpus than for AMD.
4. There is no real advantage to AMD cpu with an AMD GPU.

There is a test in tomshardware for guildwars2 compairing different cpus with the same Radeon GPU and intel perform much much better, almost twice the fps with intel cpu than with an AMD.

In addition to that, the system you linked has many flaws in it’s description, and the fact that it neglects to specify the motherboard and gpu makes me suspect that upon placing an order they assemble the board and gpu that is most suitable to them (price and availability), and not neccisarily your needs.

laggy on dungeon bosses since patch

omerk.2709

This is not a network issue.
The chat still works while the ui freezes. The graphics that I missed while the game was frozen get rendered after the freeze is released.
This, combined with the fact that not all party members suffer the same issues, makes me think it’s a graphic rendering queue issue.

Network Lag [Merged]

omerk.2709

Horrible lag starting at the first dungeon boss.
Everything except for my char is freezing, only chat works.
When it releases, I see everything I missed in a fast sequence.
Sometimes these lags end in dc, and sometimes not.

After the first lag has occured, the game will lag on and on till i kill it and restart.

EDIT:
I want to emphasise why I think it’s the client and not network.
The reason is that the chat still works.
Also, since I got to watch the whole time window I missed, I guess (I develop information systems, and have no knowledge in high performance graphic programming) That my client queues the graphics while they occur while the client is stuck, and then shows them all.
My guess is towards the queue mechanism in the client application.

laggy on dungeon bosses since patch

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: omerk.2709

omerk.2709

Since the 28/1 patch, I tried fractals twice.
Both times I experienced horrible lags. at times, it made me still see the combat while the boss was already down. Sometimes I get disconnected as well.
On the 2nd occasion, the group kicked me, and i don’t blame them, i made no contribution.

This happens only in dungeons, and starts only at the first boss. From that point, other fights become laggy, and when I leave the dungeon, the world is also laggy.
The world lag is solved by killing the game and restarting it, but there is no point in doing so in dungeons, since at the first glance of a boss, this is going to happen again.

When the lag ends, I get a “fast forward” video of everything that happened while I was stuck as if all the rendering was waiting in a queue.

While the lags go on, and the game is stuck, the group chat works.

Please fix it, I didn’t do fractals before due to all the disconnects and lack of ability to get back, and I can’t do them now, untill a fix patch is released.

For me, the only end game content is dungeons, and without them, it’s pretty much game over.

How does that work for dungeons like CoF, that can be blocked. What if their server has the dungeon unlocked, and my server does not?

As the title states.

Instead of waiting for the group to fall on you, or wait in LA for the right chat message, be active and go to gw2lfg.com, and either find a post you like, or start one on your own.
When whispered, take initiative, start the group, don’t wait to find an already made group.

As for the built in tool. This is not very clear since not many ppl know it, and very few know it and use it.

Whenever you log in and in the mood to play with people, turn the looking for group flag on. this is done via contacts menu, and when you do that, you’ll see other people in your area with the option turned on.

This isn’t the best solution, but it’s still built into the game.

This, combined with the use of gw2lfg, should be more than enough untill a built in tool is implemented.

I suggest that the police will handle them criminals. They ruin the game.

Every time an ability is nerfed, the ones who did it at the initial difficulty begin to moan even though they will never do the low level again.

The key to survive is to understand you can do 2 things most MMORPGs won’t let you:
1. dodge. use it, plan how to use it so you have enough energy when you need.
2. cast while moving. appart from some specific skills, you can move while casting, statistically, that will get you out of the red circles at least 50 % of the time, before the damage hits the red circle.

Having said that, the 2 mechanics you need to learn don’t make up for knowing the mobs and understanding the fight.

Kohler can be pretty easy if all avoid the pull in mechanic, which is the only real danger in this fight.
If not, this is a kitten hard fight, with 4 ppl downed 80% of the time.

The packs in CoF will be much easier if you get rid of the bombers first.

That’s all require learning. you can’t avoid that.
Dungeons aren’t designed for a first timers group going in one shoting everything.
The learning curve isn’t steep though. it’s not too hard.

There should be some form of a penalty like in WoW, where if you rage quit before you wiped 3 times or so, you’re banned from lfg tool for 30 mins.

Arah Story

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: omerk.2709

omerk.2709

I was under the impression that Arah story exists only to let players get rid of the next personal story step indication at the top right of the screen, not for replaying it.

It is indeed painfully long, with cinematics that exceed the time it takes to watch the whole LOTR trilogy, and level 5 characters to 80.

However, it is needed to get the annoying story step removed.
You also get a rare or 2 for completing it, making it the longest ever farming for 2 ectos.

Having said that, I can testify that on Gunnar’s Hold, every time I saw the instance entrance event completes, there is at least 1 group forming up for Arah story.

Later tonight, around 19:30 server time I’m going to have a go with a friend of mine, since we’re both at the last step of the story on our current characters.
This will probably be the last run there ever, so if you need it, add me to your friends before that time.

At level 80, you have access to gear with 3 stats. although it’s scaled down to level 30 equivalent, still, 15 power and 15 precision, should be better than 15 power.
Traits go without saying.

However, a level 30 alt of someone who isn’t new to dungeons, and makes good choices of the gear, traits and skills they use is better than a no team player 80, as people said.

Also, keep in mind that lots of people start doing dungeons at level 80, so they lack a lot of experience, while the dungeons designers probably assumed that by the time you make it to level 80, you are at least familiar with how groups are managed and fight togather.
This also affects (psychologically) new players who see a level 80 in their party and think it’s gonna be a faceroll since that guy already seen it all, when this may be his first instance run in the game.

AC explore, for example is designed for toons at level 35 with a variety of gear, not neccissarily inline with their traits.
There is nothing easier than that. Everybody does that and pretty succesfull.
When you’re 80, and full exotic with the stats you want and all the traits, you don’t really need to know the dungeon, you just roll through things, but at level 35 with inferior gear and traits, you should know what your’e doing. It’s not hard.

There is a bonus to low level and low level gear when learning – repair bills are way cheaper than at level 80 with full exotic gear.

omerk.2709

I have a guardian and a ranger level 80. Both decently equipped (not great, decent), with the guardian almost full knight set.
With the ranger I do much more DPS than with the guardian.
However, whenever I’m in a grp with the ranger and see the grp has enough ranged, I asked it I should go with my less dps guardian, and I say that DPS is lower, they ask me to change.
This never happened the other way around. There are never 2 many guardians in a group.
In fact, one time when I was in a grp to CoF path 1 with the ranger, and we were looking for the last 2 memebrs, ppl kept leaving the grp till I logged my guardian. Then the grp got full with no leavers.

Support is great since it buffs the group, and it removes the need to look after you since you can survive by yourself.

My advice to you is to stop trying to join the groups who publish like “lf1m warrior/guardian for CoF p1 speedrun farming”.

the class balance in dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: omerk.2709

omerk.2709

I play a guardian and a ranger, both level 80. Both mediocrely equipped.
The guardian indeed is a very good survivor and support class, while the ranger is better in rapid burning of foes.
I’m still learning to play with both, but my impression is that it’s easier to learn how to benfit your party with a guardian, since lots of the class’s abilities are towards support.
The ranger can assist the team, but the usage of these skills is less obvious.
For example, using a revive ally skill for my pet can make a huge difference, but it should be timed correctly.
Another, is that while with my guardian I can go in the mayhem, and revive an ally while taking damage, with the ranger I’d probably die doing the same, unless I wait for the downed player area to clear.
The weapon choice also helps that with the mace being a self healing weapon for example, in which case, there is no other skills I need, it just heals me while I fight. There is no learning to do there.

However, the guardian does significantly lower damage than the ranger, since my build and armor are directed at survival and support.

I think that in terms of support, there is a balance. If a party of 5 rangers, 3 out of which use a bear for tanking, and the other 2 use healing pets and mix up the abilities for support and damage, they can perform well.

Getting back to the post, there is no balance in the learning curve. Guardians are very easy to learn.

I know it’s a disgrace to post here that a group actually failed this path, but it happened.

I went there with a not too good group, to say the least.
Anyway, we managed to get to the last boss, where the general stands with his group and we attacked them.

We wiped, and when we regrouped, the general was missing. we looked all over the place, he was just not there.
The npc was with us, talking to him didn’t change anything.

We weren’t able to complete the instance and broke the group up.

I know that it’s rare for a group to fail this path, so this may have never been encountered before.

Is there something we missed, or is it a known issue?

in Personal Story

Posted by: omerk.2709

Indeed the story only worth while leveling is experience.
At most times, if you also do dungeons while leveling, you won’t need the items.
After you hit 80, the story is only good to motivate you to explore Orr, to complete Arah story mode, and the best thing I found about it is the removal of the current story step from my upper right corner of the screen.
With my 2nd char it’s even worse. I hit 80 at the step of level 70, and the story is totally worthless.

I don’t see a title as a reward since all characters should have it eventually, which will make it also pointless and none unique.

I cleared a map with a friend while we were in a group togather, and when i got the 100% on the map, I was level 12. After crafting with the mats I collected and doing the personal story, I was 16.

Yesterday I got my 2nd character to level 80. I was 74 at 9pm, and 80 at 12:30 am. The major experience boost was crafting and personal story, not the hearts.

I, for example, enjoy the melee range while being able to get hit a lot, which is why my main is a guardian. I also enjoy the occasional ranged combat while I have my personal support, which is the reason for my first alt being a ranger.

A friend of mine likes the magic type of ranged fighting, for which elementalist, mesmer or a necromancer get their spots.

As stated above, it’s about you, not the class.

Averaging MF isn’t a bad idea, when you think of that.
In fact, it will probably decrease the usage of it.
Being a selfish stat, MF users don’t really care about the performance of the group, they care only for their own drops. If you average it, these people will suffer stat lost, since they won’t get a share of the precision on other people’s gear, therefore will only benefit the group drops while loosing a combat stat. They will perform poorly, and eventually will either get kicked or replace their gear.

That title states you paid 100 gold, which means that at some point you had 100 gold. In order to get 100 gold, you play more than me, and probably better than me. I usually try to watch and learn.

However, if someone starts bossing me around, simply because he feels he’s the leader without being asked or in a rude manner, then my real life military experience kicks in, and even there, you had to prove yourself for me to follow you.
If that happens, I’ll start pulling more enemies to the event, and see how this leader can really lead.

Is it fun? The biggest lie of 2012 in gaming.

I’m having fun as well.
If it wasn’t, I’d quit.

If I fail to dodge every time Kohler pulls me near, I ask myself what am I doing wrong, not the devs.
In fact, I’m pretty sure the devs agree that failing the same thing over and over isn’t fun.

If you fall down, try a different approach and it works, it is fun.

I mostly encounter groups in which at least one knows what to do and has the patience to guide the rest of the group through it.
When people listen, it’s faster and more fun, when people don’t know what to do, it’s no fun.

The only time I encountered an “impossible” battle was the first golem of SE explore mode path 1, due to the tons of adds spawning, and the group not having enough dps to down them quick enough, and not enough survivability to sustain such high damage.

We reset, and went to path 3, which was way easier.
I’ll get back there in 2-3 exotics.

While I agree there should be both a global LFG chat channel, and there should also be a personal option to filter out messages, I don’t understand why you go to LA to chat.

When I do that, I call a friend, and we go to have a beer, watch a soccer match, and chat some. Much nicer than roaming through LA for that purpose.
Just my opinion.

Hehe, this reminds me a scenario in WoW at the level 70 instance of WOTLK, as heard on TS:
I asked: “Jacob, where are you?”
Jacob answered: “One of these flowers killed me”.

Famous last words.

Crafting is not profitable

You can make money crafting.
You can hold on to the mats till the items that you can do get a good price at the TP.

However, there is an easier way to make money from crafting, and that is to make money from other people who are crafting.

My method is simply use the mats I need to level, and sell the rest on tp.
Chasing my personal story, as well as some hearts I needed for a particular map completion, while farming all the resources I encountered yielded some nice stacks of mats. Iron ore sells nice, soft wood logs sells nice.
At the end of a run like that, which isn’t long I’m at least 1 gold better than before that, and I enjoyed it. If you completed the map, there’s even more money and a stack of 40 of a resource, which if is a tailoring resource, you’ll get more money selling these.

Also, while going for map completion, I gather mats which I don’t need, and selling them wouldn’t be profitful, in which case, I use them to level my alts’ crafting.
I have an alt at level 11 that never left it’s capital city. I don’t even have skill points to fill in the slots.

grinding Orr maps for completion yields ton of mats, all of which sell nice. I gathered mats and rares for several pieces while farming for my own knight’s gear.

need guidelines for a guardian build

As stated, I hvae a guardian at level 80, which i’m now past my personal story, and it’s time to start learning to play.

I mostly play PvE with dungeons being the vast majority of it, as well as some Orr solo farming.

What I had in mind is a build based on the knight’s set from SE explore which balances good survivability with moderate damage output. I don’t expect to be as hard as a tank, nor to out dps the dps focused characters.

I want to be able to survive through more attacks than others, but not to lag too much behind in damage.

My point of origin is 4.5 years of WoW tanking, which I loved doing. In most raid encounters I out dps’ed the low dpsers.

I’m still new to GW2, and I would certainly consider changing the way I think (such as trying a different than knight concept, more healing, etc.).

What I ask is guidelines for a build as well as gear focus. I mean what set should I go for with what build, what will it benefit, and such.

Thanks in advance for any tip you may think of.

A new concept introduction:

Do what feels the most fun at the moment.
This is a game, it’s meant to be fun.

You want to do dungeons? go ahead.
You want you personal story? do that.
Map completion? also a very valid option.
try WvW, sPvP, or, which is also a very revolutionary idea – alternate between all/part of the above.

Just do whatever you like. Have fun pal.
I alternate between map completion, dungeons, personal story, and leveling an alt with friends.
