I agree with SoggyFrog, with after-hours parties involving games such as “Are you dumber than Skritt?” Or Drunken Golemancing, in which krewes must elect a member to drink from a bottle of mysterious ooze, not knowing what the side effect may be, and then assemble a golem that must fight against other contestants in the battle arena.

Will all levels be able to fully participate?

@Darth Danny, I think the issue most people have with what your requesting is that you assume that being level 80 is the only indication that you’ve invested time in the game, which isn’t necessarily the case. Just as a personal anecdote, I also have been playing since the first few minutes of head start release, played in several of the beta weekends, contributing to bug reports, etc. I have purchased gems with RMT and in-game gold both, but I do not yet have a level 80 character, nor even any over level 50. What I do have are 5 characters in the level 35-45 range, as I am playing them as a krewe and trying to keep them within a relatively close level range. This does not mean that I have played any less than you or contributed to the game or to the company any less than you, and yet you feel that I am not entitled to the same things that you are. Granted, it was by choice that I have not played any character exclusively to reach level 80, but it is possible that I have put in more game time overall, and it would be appreciated that all of my characters are able to participate in the festivities.

Wouldn’t you agree?

There have been a lot of helpful tips here, but I will add a few more. As was mentioned, open up your Hero panel, [H] by default and look at the Skills and Traits tab. Read through each weapon abilities description. Remember which ones mention Combo Fields or Combo Finishers, because Combos are good! (Especially the Pizza/Pretzel ones, mmmm)
Also while you are there, make sure that you are utilizing all of your earned trait points. The trees that tend to help the most with survivability are usually the 3rd and 4th tree line, or the ones that have a Heart and a Shield next to them.

Now, once you see which abilities lay down combo fields, practice using those, and then follow them up with the abilities that are labeled as combo finishers. You’ll know you are doing it successfully if you see a greyscale heart above your head after using the ability that looks like 2 puzzle pieces assembled. When these abilities are used together like this, they tend to create much more powerful effects that can be beneficial in killing an enemy before it kills you.

Additionally, look at your options carefully for utility skills, mobility and damage are fun, but until you get the hang of combat, try taking utility skills that provide you with boons such as Aegis, Protection, or Regeneration. If you don’t have any available to you, are there any that apply conditions to your foe? Particularly look for Blind or Weakness/Fumble as these will assist your survivability the most.

Keep your armor and weapons upgraded! I made this mistake on my first character, and its easy to do because you don’t always realize how easy it is to level in this game. I kept dying the further I progressed, and realized that I was level 30+ and still in lvl 14 ish blues. You can typically get nice gear on the Trading Post, and it lower levels it is just a few silver for a full wardrobe. Try and prioritize Vitality and Toughness on your gear and Power/precision on your weapons (depending on class and play style, of course) but this will usually give you a decent balance of survivability and damage output.

Be social! I’m not saying to pull a Baby Huey on random strangers, but if you come up on an event and it looks like there are some competent players involved, try to keep pace with them after it is completed, explore with them, watch how they play and see if you can synergize. Use combo fields! This will not only give you additional avenues to learn through observation, but it will increase your survivability having people close by that can help you rally if you need it. And you might just make some friends!

All that being said, if you’d like to tag along in game sometime, I am available most evenings on the Sea of Sorrows server, and I’d be happy to help you out where I can. Name is Trïkk, or Trikke. Guardian and Thief, respectively.

Best of luck to you!

They don’t need to be impractical in size, but I find it difficult to believe that Asura are intelligent enough to build a gigantic floating city and master the art of golemancy and numerous other alchemagical endeavors, yet can’t seem to be able to create a simple counterweight to allow for larger weapons. Even a magical solution would not be out of e realm of possibility for them. I’m not looking for ridiculous anime sizes here, I don’t wish to swing around a greatsword the size of a Mack truck, but perhaps a greatsword that is larger than a Norns dagger, or a hammer that doesn’t look like a stole a toddlers rattle.

I personally liked how RIFT handled the ui. I only played for a few months and don’t recall there being 3rd party addons. However, the default up was completely customizable in that anything could be resized or moved or attached or detached to other components or frames. This was a fantastic method of control, and could allow ArenaNet to keep the beautiful art assets but allow some freedom to adjust to individual play styles.

I would personally love my target info in the bottom center of my screen, where currently my own vitals are displayed, but to each their own.

“Geez i really wonder why everyone makes smallest asurans in game ?”

Jesus christ this. I remember making my Asura a tick below the max height and I have never seen any other Asura as tall as mine. People defiantly do this solely for the competitive aspect.

Yes, only for the competitive aspect, not at all for how we feel our character should look and be portrayed. Just like every Norn or Charr make the largest hulking figure for competitive play, not because they want to look a certain way, but so they can intimidate other players. I really don’t get this argument, as there is perhaps a fraction of a percent of people who play this game that roll a tiny Asura simply for a misperceived ‘competitive’ pvp advantage.

Regarding invisible armies in WvWvW

in Suggestions

ozymandias.5317

I am by no means a programmer and have limited knowledge of how most of these system work (though the reporting/culling, asset load explanation on the Reddit stream was VERY helpful)
So, with that basic understanding, wouldn’t a potential quick fix be to only load silhouette information of characters as a priority? That way, the client would at least be able to get an idea of positioning and numbers of attackers and can react accordingly. It seems like a silhouette wouldn’t take as many resources transmit to load, compared to say, a character in full blown exotics and a rainbow of colors. This would be especially true in the situations causing issues when there are dozens of enemies present.

I realize its not the most elegant of solutions, but I’d be much happier fighting a silhouette outline of a character than I would be dying to an invisible enemy.

What say you Tyrians? Would this be an acceptable solution to you until the resources can be dedicated into cracking the difficult optimization of full asset loads?

Unforgettable...

One of my favorite moments came after finishing an escort style DE into the middle of a swampy area. On the way back out, I noticed a flashing warning sign at the base of a mountain that read DANGER, as I walked up to it, naturally, I noticed another sign a little further up the mountain. Ooh! This looks exciting. I continued searching, finding sign after sign on my way up this mountain, building anticipation. “What could possibly require this much warning for adventurers? It must be something epic, I’m going to have my kitten handed to me!” I finally reach a clearing just below the summit of the mountain, and I notice the entrance to a cave tucked away behind a boulder. “This is it, moment of truth, adrenaline pumping, weapons at the ready!” I charged around the boulder and… There before me was the cutest little Asura you can imagine, completely surrounded by rabbits. I just about died laughing, because here I was prepped for a battle of epic proportions, and I discover this little nook hideaway belonging to a sweet little Asura with a very touching story about her rabbits. I sheathed my weapons and just sat next to her, enjoying the conversation and watching the rabbits hop around.

I love the moments this game provides.

Please rename "Retreat!"

Posted by: ozymandias.5317

ozymandias.5317

My Asura uses it as a mind game. Shout “Retreat” and then charge into the enemy lines. They never see it coming! Unless of course, they see you coming.

Picture the scene from Night at the Museum, with Custer going over battle strategies about when to shout attack, and that is pretty much my Asura, with less debate and more action.

If it were to be altered, I would enjoy race themed exclamations, so for my Asura, something like “Strategic Repositioning” would be fun.

For Norn, “Don’t run from the fight, run to it!”

Humans could shout “I have to save Queen Jennah!”
Kidding, maybe.

For Sylvari, something nature related, since that seems to be a recurring theme in EVERY phrase they have. “Swift as the wind!” Or “Uproot” or something.

For Charr, I just imagine a very guttural growl.

In Game Marriage

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ozymandias.5317

ozymandias.5317

I don’t see how an in-game marriage or family system would add anything that can’t already be achieved with the in-game guild system. Since you aren’t restricted to a single guild, you can create a union of players in your own guild. This gives you shared storage, unique identifiers, etc.

And just bcause guilds are capable of being massive, they don’t necessarily have to be. Remember, ’Destiny’s Edge’ is technically a guild consisting of 5 people.

So, in my opinion, no in-game marriage system needed, as it already exists.

Checking www.gw2db.com a quick search for dye produces 439 results, subtract the generic “Unidentified Dye” of which there are 34, and the 1 dye pack listed, leaves you with 404 colors. I didn’t take the time to see if any are duplicates, but perhaps you could cross reference your collection and see what comes up short?

Just checked the same thing on guildhead.com with the same results.

So I will go with 404 colors.

Maybe roll one of each race to see if there is an exclusive starter color? Seems like different color choices are available in the starter palettes which may be why you are short.

Solution: From the surface of the water, jump forward; mid jump, hit your swim down key bind while holding your forward key bind. This usually will provide enough momentum from the jump to break the surface and get you underwater.

It’s annoying, but seems functional enough.

Voice talent generally not so… talented?

in Audio

Posted by: ozymandias.5317

ozymandias.5317

I don’t understand the people saying Zojja’s voice work by Felicia Day was terrible. Granted, I haven’t played a personal story past level 35 or so, but I have 2 Asura in that range and all of the beginning level stories were voiced perfectly. Inflection, emotion, punch lines. It seemed like everything was delivered perfectly. Maybe once she starts getting into more Destinys Edge situations that changes? But from what I’ve experienced, I think Zojja is one of the better voices in the game.

Actually most of the Asura voices in general seem to fit really well, with one minor annoyance: not all of the exclamations seem to be using the same voice actors, or if they are, they’ve been sampled dramatically different. A single NPC sounds like they have 2 or 3 voices when interacting with them for any length of time, and it is a bit jarring. I apologize I can’t offer specific examples because I haven’t notated them as they occur.

Overall I’ve been fairly impressed. Thank you, ArenaNet.

WvWvW - Grossly disproportionate server outcomes

in Suggestions

Posted by: ozymandias.5317

ozymandias.5317

While browsing through the WvWvW forums, I noticed a number of threads claiming that the issue of having one dominant server was making the system not enjoyable for any team. The two losing teams are losing by such a gross margin that they become disheartened and stop playing, and the winning team really just needs to win the first day or two and then just sits back bored while the points rack up over the next few days.

My suggestion for alleviating this issue is to create a point cap for the leading team. It can be some arbitrary number, my example would be 5,000 points, that the leading team can never exceed that much of a margin over the 2nd place team.

This could still allow for a clearly dominant server to achieve victory, but it would encourage the other servers to keep fighting, because the margin is large enough to provide a buffer for the winning team, but not so large that it could not be overtaken by one of the other servers. This keeps the tension higher, the potential for the outcome to change is always close at hand. And it encourages the other servers to keep joining and fighting, as they aren’t opening their WvWvW menus and seeing themselves in a 100,000 point deficit with no hope of climbing out of that.

Of course, the reward levels could all be adjusted accordingly, as ANet appears to be adept at running dynamic systems.

So, in brief:
Point cap on winning team to keep them from running away with the victory.
Encourage more participation.
Encourages continued fighting for the full duration of the match.
Players have a chance to turn the tide of battle.
Keeps tensions high, and necessitates continued fighting.

Please offer criticisms and suggestions, preferably with supporting arguments. Thank you.

The "Self Balancing System"

in WvW

Posted by: ozymandias.5317

ozymandias.5317

Potential solution: place a lead cap in the game. Make it impossible for the first placed team to develop a lead of greater than some arbitrary amount of points. Something like 5000 pr so, so it can be a small buffer, but not one that is completely insurmountable that the other two teams have no chance of catching up.

This can still favor a clearly dominant server, but it will also bolster hope in the other teams and allow them the potential of swinging the battle in their favor. And it is not a large enough buffer that the winning team can just sit back and kitten themselves while they coast to victory.

Keeps tension, keeps excitement, adds a level of unpredictability.
Can anyone see a negative to this suggestion? I’m certainly open to accepting criticism.

Edited for grammar. Apparently auto-correct never successfully completed basic English.

I would like at them more as prideful and patriotic. They tend to have a sort of Manifest Destiny complex, which is hilarious. Think of them as Tyrias version of the all-mighty Irken from Invader Zim.

Scientifically speaking, they aren’t racist… they feel they are superior to other species which is the same as saying Humans feel we are superior to chimpanzees, or dolphins. These animals are recognized as highly sentient, and yet we see ourselves as clearly superior. This is the same as the Asura. Charr, human, norn and sylvari are like sentient animals, cute for pets and labor, but clearly inferior to the Asura. (And golems are more reliable, anyway.)

The flavor text in this game...

…is absolutely masterful. One of the main goals of any RPG is character immersion, and ArenaNet succeeded brilliantly! Having the NPCs carry on conversations amongst themselves is really a great way to make the player feel like they are part of a living breathing world, and it is inspiring in a way that makes me want to go and talk to them, or stand near and hear what they have to say. Some of it is revealing of lore, which is a cool way to learn backstory, some of it is insightful into the goings on of the region, and some of it is downright hilarious. Knowing that there are characters like this in game really gives a sense of what it is we are fighting to protect in Tyria. I’m just really appreciative that a company took the time to add in bits of flavor text that can make me smile or laugh or have a poignant moment as I travel through the world they created. Event Participation Problems In Large Groups

in Dynamic Events

thank you sir! loving DE’s btw, they just need to be a lot more challenging for larger groups.

<3

Ok, please let me address this.

I am a GAMER. I consider myself to be the top echelon of gamer. I play every type of game, and i play them a lot. I also have my MBA, design games in my spare time, and program. I’ve been hardcore, and casual, often times in the same game.

This gives me a very different perspective on games when I look at them.

Players do not want ‘difficult’ encounters. They want ‘challenging’ and ‘engaging’ encounters.

Do not make the same mistake as Jay Wilson and D3. The fight mechanics in this game (and in most games) leaves only a bit of leeway into how challenging an encounter can become without becoming frustrating.

Watch that line carefully!

Combat difficulty is NOT the answer to making DEs more engaging. Similar to WoW raids, the difficulty should come in organization and strategic positioning. That is the entire point of a group based quest system is it not?

Thus, when seeking to increase the ‘challenge’ of DEs, you need to:

1) Split the zerg
- This can be done by having multiple objectives within the same DE.
Something like, “You can only attack the boss when these 2 points are controlled.” Where 2 nodes act as ‘shield removers,’ and are continually blasted by waves of minions that need to be killed. This splits the zerg into 3 groups, 2 at each of the nodes, and 1 killing the boss.

2) Brute force isn’t the end all be all
- Failure does not indicate the end
So maybe the DE arena is sealed off. Players run into an area and the doors close on them. You die, and youre out. Maybe there are no enemies at all and only spikes/megalasers that try and impale/toast you. Maybe the floor crumbles over a lava pit. Maybe only 1 person needs to survive for you to succeed. In circumstances like this failure is expected, but the quest goes on, just in a different way.

Give players a chance to fight back and reclaim their honor. Keep events moving. I made the suggestion for cyclical DEs…that NEEDs to be implemented. Its just good game design.

3) Hold the fort
- Increase wave difficulty until defeated
One thing that I haven’t seen is a ‘hold out’ DE. Lets say you get to the end of the quest chain and you finally take over the enemies Keep.

Well, aside from whatever bonuses we get (perhaps access to a unique karma vendor, or some unique banner buffs that you can activate), you are constantly being attacked by wave after wave of minions. Thing is, the waves get tougher and tougher, to the point that you will inevitably be kicked out, and the chain goes back to the start.

All these things increase the difficulty of DEs without making them frustrating. Increasing health pools, minion # and attack power is THE WORST idea. Unfortunately, its the EASIEST method.

Do not take the easy way out. This is your game…be proud of it, and do something thats memorable with the awesome system you created.

This last idea is brilliant. I would love to see a survival mode dynamic event, similar to the Wychmire Swamp thing but on a much grander scale. Reward chest loot could increase in Quality/Rarity the longer the team is able to hold out. This could even be done inside of WvWvW with environmental creatures trying to take over an objective point. Would be a lot of fun I think.

“Nearby allies gain +30 toughness.”

Does this passively give the guardian an additional 30 toughness as well, or is it an aura that only effects allies, and what is the approximate range? Normally I’d check the wiki but it doesn’t have this info listed.

The end game reimagined. Thoughts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

In my opinion this wave of complaints about “end game” are coming mostly from the hard-core “gotta-max-level-asap” crowd who rushed through a game that wasn’t designed to be rushed through.

It’s like opening the box to Monopoly, picking the race car, stacking all the money and properties in front of you and placing hotels all over the place and then complaining that the game is completely lacking in substance.

End game is just PvP, that’s all it is. It’s funny because the “hard-core” gamers you’re making fun of are the ones revealing the actual problems with the game early before the casuals get to it. Most people at 80 are losing interest and you’re in denial if you believe otherwise

End game isn’t just PvP for everyone. Even in other games, look at WoW. How many people in WoW went crazy for achievements? Exploration, titles, collecting. These are things that large portions of the player base find enjoyable. Kittens, even the mini pets had such a huge following and subculture that one of the grand highlights of Blizzards new expansion is a Pokemon style arena fight specifically tailored to leveling up your mini pets.
But yes, you’re right that the only thing to do is PvP. ArenaNet created the entire beautiful world of Tyria for us to spend all our time in 4 instances maps to fight against 5 other players, or on a (admittedly epic) battleground vying for points.
I’ll enjoy PvP, but I’ll enjoy the rest of the wide world as well. I’m interested to see how things will dynamically change as populations shift and events are allowed to run through some of their chains.
I’ve already witnessed a major change in a Sylvari area where the first time through there I was fighting off a Nightmare invasion. A week later, there clearly hadn’t been enough people to fight off a subsequent attack because where there had once been a lush green garden land was now covered in Nightmare, with darkness and fog. This created a completely different play experience.

This is what they mean when they say that endgame is reimagined. It isn’t something you work toward, it’s something that you play through. The entire game is endgame.

I remember an interview very early on where ArenaNet said something to the effect of ‘the only reason levels are in the game is because it would be too much of a shock to players to not have that numerical sense of progression.’

While I see their point in this mentality, I wonder if it would have been better to not include the numerical levels just to avoid these people thinking that there is an endgame when it is really just a game. Since skill points still accumulate after 80 and all content is still viable at 80. People just seem to think that once that number stops increasing they should be progressing in gear.

I wish I could offer a suitable alternative to the level system, perhaps just by number of skill points unlocks new thresholds of equip able gear or something. Either way, fantastic game ArenaNet, thank you for what is sure to be years of enjoyment from myself and my wife, playing at our own pace, while I laugh at my friends who can’t go out on a Friday night or else their leet raiding guild will leave them behind and they won’t be competitive anymore.

Guild wars 2 content update

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hi Basen,

I think it’s important to ignore your numerical level in this game and focus more on the content available. There is no real “leveling too fast” because your level scales to the zone you’re in. So if you hit level 80 you can still go to a level 1-15 zone you haven’t gone to before and work on the quests, vistas etc without being very overpowered for the zone.

The main focus of this game, at least to me, is exploration. I know that will take a fair amount of time for me, and then once I’ve hit 80 with one character and seen all that I can, I’m going to roll another and do it all again. I know that may sound boring to some, but for me, I have no problem repeating content as long as there’s something new. In the case of this game, it’s a new character’s story that will keep me going.

Small content updates could be possible but I am very much against mounts for this game- they serve no real purpose. With fast travel on your map, you can get to locations fairly quickly and mounts only succeed in creating annoyances i.e. people who stand on top of vendors with their mounts so you can’t see the vendor.

ArenaNet’s usual business model (at least, for GW1) was to release expansion packs, though I can’t quite remember how frequently they were released. In my opinion, with how I play the game, it will take me a long while to see all there is to see between vistas and each character’s story.

The beauty of this game is you can enter and leave as you please since their isn’t a monthly fee. So if you finish the game and get bored, you can go play something else till they’re ready to release an expansion pack. Then you get to revisit the world all over again.

This is just my two cents/euros (what is the exchange rate these days, anyway?) :o)

Cheers!

This right here sums up much of what I enjoy about the game. And why I appreciate the ‘no sub fee’ aspect of it. It reminds me of when I was younger and I would play platform games over and over again. I could do a full playthrough of Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES in under 4 hours. And I would do it over and over again. Talk about there being NO ENDGAME. This is at least a dynamic world, which provides endless levels of enjoyment for people like me. This really does bring out a lot of RPG elements, mainly in the sense that there is so much to do if people just used their imaginations a little and didn’t expect everything to be handed them in a nifty package. Its not hard to see all that ArenaNet has given us in this game if people just actually took off their ‘Generic MMO Glasses’ and took a look around.

I love it when I run up to a oversized Norn and stop, almost falling over, only to be eye level to mid-shin or so…lol, every time I feel myself wanting to say, “Hey, watch where you step, I’m down here!!”

One of my favorite game quotes from WoW was the gnome greeting “My, you’re a tall one!”
Disliked most everything else about the game when I quit, but I still loved my gnome.

Sea of Sorrows here, it seems about 30/70 when I join if we are doing well or not. One thing I think might help would be to add more waypoints to the maps that can be taken over and defended like other structures. Simply because if you have a small group trying to capture a fort or something that happens to be near the outskirts of your map and end up all dying, you have to spend another 6-7 minutes running back to try again, which can be disheartening. I realize that there is strategy involved, but if you are trying to help your team to take a point, and you spend 5 minutes or more trying to reach that point only to get stomped by 2 or 3 players plus the NPCs that hit like a freight train in less than a minute, is really stupidly frustrating.

I’ve seen multiple people stating that this ability causes the virtue to recharge when a mob is killed. Is this a bug? Because the wiki tooltip states it allows it recharge when you rally. Which, I realize killing a mob would cause you to rally, but that’s not quite the same. I am at work and unable to verify in game, but is this how it is worded in game? It would seem a little overpowered to have a group aegis for every mob you kill.
