This is level 80. Thanks for the replies so far.

I went to the trading post and typed in exotic, and the only thing that comes up is recipes for a box of draconic armor.

I compared what I have on (Berserkers it seems to be called) to what’s available and it’s not as awful as I suspected, but I’m not sure how to progress.

Hi there, folks,

I bought heart of thorns shortly after it came out, played for maybe a week, and then got busy and stopped.

I just got back and I have no idea what’s going on. I have a glider but can’t really interact with much of the world to use it. I have a story quest but I can’t progress because my glider doesn’t do what it needs to. I’ve tried doing events but I get just wrecked in the fights.

I assume my build is awful (I’m a warrior) and my gear is trash. I could really use some advice on a) how to get some new gear, and b) what would be a fairly good defensive build for a warrior. I don’t need to kill fast, I’d rather feel safe when I engage in any given fight.

Thanks!

Respectfully, Knighthonor, you’re playing the wrong game. In fact, you’re playing the wrong genre. You should go find some nice action adventure games to play.

again hate when people say this, because Levels wasnt always the Genre.

Playing with others in a world, was define this genre. not levels, since Character level trail didnt become popular until Everquest 1, and made standard from WoW which uses the same system as Everquest 1. those games were popular, but doesnt mean level locking mechanics is a good game design.

Okay, you are obviously trolling. Leveling was a huge part of RPGs well before computer games, and certainly before Everquest. Levels originated in tabletop gaming, and have been adopted by the vast majority of RPGs and MMORPGs have carried them along as a natural progression.

He’s not trolling, he’s just deluded. Note the points he keeps bringing up in his posts. FPS games. He wants MMO-RPGs to be FPS games with a fantasy skin.

What I don’t is people like him who play games they know they won’t like, and then complain about it. “I hate games with level progression. I’m going to play this game that has level progression. THIS LEVEL PROGRESSION IS STUPID AND THEY SHOULD REMOVE IT.”

The OP looks about as crazy as if I went to the Madden forums and demanded they introduce levels.

I am not trolling nor delusional.
Somebody at Anet also had the same reason of thought that I did. somebody at Sony also was thinking about this as well. the game becomes fun from day 1 when you have the freedom to make our own fun rather than be told what and what not is fun. levels tell us what we can and cant do, until we do a grind, that some people may or may not enjoy.

You’re right, they did think about it. And then, after thinking about it, they didn’t do it. Because it’s a bad idea.

You’re entitled to your opinion. But my opinion is that your opinion is bone stupid. And I’m entitled to that opinion.

FotM Dredge path needs a redesign

No matter what the game developers do, there will always be a ‘hardest’, ‘longest’ and ‘most annoying’ dungeon/boss. And people will always complain about it. If the developers nerf said dungeon/boss, then something else will become the ‘hardest’, ‘longest’, ‘most annoying’, &c., and people will start to complain about that.

At a certain point, developers have to put their foot down and tell the player base “No”.

Warrior LF Dungeon Guild on SBI

Howdy folks!

I hit 80 a few days ago, mostly by bumbling my way through events and quests as I wandered from story point to story point. It’s one of the most rewarding levelling experiences I’ve ever had, but now that I’m 80 I’d like to dig into some of the dungeons a bit.

I’m looking for a guild that runs dungeons on a regular basis, and is interested in having a new member tag alone. I haven’t done any of the dungeons, but I have a long history of dungeoneering in other MMOs, so it won’t take long for me to get the basics down. I’d just rather avoid pugging my way through dungeons the first time, because I don’t want to let people down.

Hit me up here, or in game (Gruklaar, on Stormbluff Isle).

Thanks!

Most efficient way to make gold?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The most efficient way to earn gold in this game is to take overtime shifts at work and convert the cash to gold.

I could spend a saturday farming like mad and make 100G or so. Or I could take an overtime shift and make 700G. That’s efficiency right there.

As has been said above, the best way to earn gold in the game is to earn money in real life and convert it. I could spend a saturday farming my butt off, and make 100 gold. Or I could work an overtime shift at work, and convert the money to gold, and make 700 gold or so (depending on the conversion rate that day).

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied. I did my first story mode dungeon, and I think it went fairly well. The group was more than happy to explain things to me, and understood when I screwed up.

I do have one more question though. I found that I was dying a lot. Now I know that’s normal for a first timer, but it wasn’t due to me standing in the fire. In a lot of instances, I’d hang back, we’d engage with trash, then I’d charge in and use hundred blades. My health would immediately drop to 0 because everything decided to hit me at once. Should I be hanging back with a longbow? Is melee a liability? Do I have defensives on my warrior I’m not aware of?

shaidyn.4016

Hi there, folks!

I just recently hit 80, by bumbling through my story and whatever hearts/events happened to cross my path as I explored the world. (One of the most enjoyable levelling experiences I’ve ever had in any game, I might also mention.) Now that I’m max level, though, I’d like to explore some of the dungeons in the game.

I’ve done a bit of research, and from what I’ve heard the dungeons are quite challenging (good for me), and the community has little patience for noobs (not so good for me). I’d like to prepare myself as much as possible, so I don’t look like quite such a schlep. In no particular order, my questions are:

- As a warrior, what are my responsibilities (if any) likely to be in a group? I looked into a good build, and it has a few group buffs that I expect to cycle through as needed. Anything specifically that people expect warriors to do by default?
- My gear stinks. I know there are no raids, but is there a gear progression I should do before I jump right into the dungeons? E.g, scour the AH for level 80 greens, then get some rare gear, then exotic gear? Or do I just go in with crap gear and work on obtaining the best stuff asap?
- I know I have to do any given dungeon on story mode before I can move on to explorer mode, but can I repeat story mode (to get more comfortable)?
- Is there anything I’m expected to bring to a dungeon? I’ve mostly ignored consumables in the game, thus far.
- If I’m upfront about my noobness, will people be accepting or simply kick me? Should I pretend I know what’s going on and fake it til I make it?
- Dungeons scale with my level, so I can’t brute force them. But is there a generally agreed upon ‘ranking’ for dungeon difficulty? I.e., start here, move here, &c. &c.?

That’s all I can think of for now. Any help, tips, or random advice will be much appreciated.

Hi folks!

I just dinged 80, and it’s about time I polished up my gear and my build. I levelled using a greatsword/rifle (switching out for long bow when an event needed AoE), with full signets.

My goals are:
- Do a lot of dungeons (I’ve done none so far).
- Help in world events.

What I’d like to know is:
- Can I stick with a greatsword?
- Should I pick up more slot skills that will help the team? Banners and what not? If so, what are a few solid picks?
- What stats should I pump up? I’ve focused pretty heavily on precision and crit damage so far, but should I be aiming at more vitality?
- What traits should I max out? I went 30 strength, 25 arms, 15 defence so far.

Thanks!

Why are there so many contested way points?

Taking the advice in this thread, I tried to clear out a waypoint. I had catapults pinning me from either side, mobs that respawned constantly, NPCs that died as soon as I rezzed them, and a 5 minute run back every time I died.

I get the feeling the game is tuned to have about ten times more people running around than it has. I can’t imagine I’m supposed to be doing this alone.

Why are there so many contested way points?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: shaidyn.4016

shaidyn.4016

It’s becoming increasingly frustrating to play the game, as I level. I can’t teleport anywhere near to the places I need to go, and dying sends me a solid 10 minute walk away from my body. I just died moments ago, and the four closest waypoints are contested.

The other day I got tired of it and cleared out a way point I knew I’d need to get back to shortly. It became contested again no more than 5 minutes later. No matter now often I came back and cleared it out, more mobs would spawn and pile in.

What’s the point of having teleport points nobody can teleport to?

I do my fair share of trolling, but if someone wants to have a logical discussion I’m more than happy.

I don’t think you can keep falling back on ‘subjective’ as a defense. Everything is subjective. But if I say it’s “raining” out, and someone says “raining is subjective”, well, that’s true, but it’s also pointless. They’re still going to get wet.

This is not an easy game. It’s been made clear before launch, and now that the game is live it’s even more obvious. If you’ve been reading the information coming from the developers, it’s pretty obvious they’re happy with the level of difficulty. And so is a significant portion of the database.

Why don’t you see more people on the forums saying how happy they are? Because they’re all in game, having fun. The only reason I show up on the forums so much is to be a voice of positivity for the developers. I think they’re doing a good job, and I want them to know it.

A fair point. I’ll put it this way.

Some people think easy games are fun. That’s fine. Some people think difficult games are fun. That’s also fine.

What is not fine is people who want an easy game, playing a difficult game, and complaining that it’s not easy.

Ah, good form – insult people while claiming they are the whiny, entitled children. You must see the misstep in logic there, eh?

Back to the point: Some people have a lot less fun when dying. Some people want a game to be easier. Tiered difficulty systems can handle this. And guess what? My $60 dollars was just as much as yours – we are both entitled to provide feedback on our experience.

None of that makes me a “whiny, entitled, child”.

I call them like I see them, champ. If someone says, “I want to play a video game without worrying about dying,” well, my opinion of them isn’t going to be high.

So just checking – but you think its acceptable to die four times in the very first, story mode dungeon in the game? Presumably, this should be the easiest dungeon and easiest difficulty in the game, and your perfectly happy that on your third run-through, not your first, you ate dirt 4 times?

Sorry, but that is just not fun for everyone. Glad you enjoyed it though, more power to you.

So, just checking – but you think it is acceptable for people to expect to go into a dungeon and NOT die?

I sometimes think that the only way that Anet is going to be able to make people stop crying is to invent a time machine, go back 20 years, and kitten slap half the playerbase so they don’t grow up to be whiny, entitled children.

The dungeons as they exist are perfect for casual players. If I have a bit of free time, I can hop online, ping the guild, make a group and get it done.

The dungeons are NOT for bad players. If you lack skill, you will not enjoy dungeons. And Anet shouldn’t be catering to bad players.

I move over to the nearby heart; bugged.

Move to another heart; bugged.

A new event pops up; bugged.

Like many of my brethren, I’m levelling as a glass cannon warrior; greatsword with offensive traits and mostly signets. It works great for events and heart quests, so I can’t complain. But I know that it’s not going to cut muster in a dungeon, so I’ve been avoiding them.

What is a good combination of traits, weapons, and slot skills for being a good group player? I think my traits are 10 strength, 20 arms, 10 discipline right now (level 50), so those are the trait passives I’ll have at my disposal.

“As for the question about PuG’s for explorable dungeons, we’ve said all along that explorable dungeons are intended for highly organized/skilled groups of players.”

Oh, so this is what separates the middle/lower class from the upper class?

So basically you’ve made the dungeons for elitists and/or special guild folk. Or wait, better yet, BORED GW1 players! I would bet that a good half of your players, like myself, are just plain ‘ole PuG people that are new to your game and are looking to contribute to your franchise and have fun, but are feeling a tad displaced particularly when I am on the ground dead in a dungeon….oh, several times over…because I was one-shotted. Where is my one-shot? How come I can’t shoot people behind me without looking at them? Why can’t I walk through walls?

How about this: While I’m learning how to become skilled and organized (because that’s a process, right?) that you reimburse me for my armor damage costs?

Or, how about just starting all your dungeons at Level 80? That way, by the time everyone gets to 80, they will be ‘highly-skilled and organized’ from learning through difficulty-tiered dungeons that start at 30 (should you create them)??

I can fairly guarantee that most everyone who is telling you to not change a thing, has come from GW1. But in your error, you are not being fair to your new players. An even distribution of learning would seem an amicable solution.

This is the biggest load of entitled kitten I’ve ever read in my entire life. And that’s saying something. I don’t know how you’ve managed to not starve to death, since you obviously spend your days waiting for someone to spoon feed you.

The only thing separating the player base is SKILL. And Anet cannot give you skill. Ever. They can’t do it. You can’t patch stupid. The only way you are ever going to fully enjoy this game, is to improve yourself.

If other people can clear the content, YOU can clear the content. If you can’t, then you’re not good enough, and you don’t deserve it.

Greatsword feels mandatory for questing

in Guardian

Posted by: shaidyn.4016

shaidyn.4016

I’m really happy this thread got such feedback, because it’s shown me a lot about the class.

I guess my original thinking about the greatsword was that it sacrifices defence for damage. Every other weapon or combo focuses more on either buffing you, healing you, or defending you. And that can be great. But so far while questing my experience has been that you don’t NEED any defences. The mobs hit like kittens (I actually typed kittens, I wasn’t swearing. ). So I can forgo all the bells and whistles of the other weapons, slap on a greatsword, and cleave my way through the game. It’s just the best choice for getting to 80.

Inside dungeons and during events, it’s a totally different story, and I certainly wasn’t going to comment on that until I have more experience.

Again, thanks for all the input!

GW2 actually has this structure. For hardcore players, there are dungeons. For casual players, there’s “the rest of the kitten game.”

I have no beef with casual players, I’ve been one in many games. What upsets me though is that they seem to feel that if any content is denied them due to its difficulty, there’s a problem.

This is perhaps the most accurate description of the lifecycle of MMO RPGs.

I can only hope that Anet is banking on the fact that there are enough hardcore players out there that have been shunted out of their original MMOs, that they’ll stick with this one and survive the loss of casual players.

But seriously. Great post.

Frankly, 5 man dungeons ARE level 80 raids.

Except you do get gear from dungeons in the form of tokens.

I think his point is, expecting “better drops” is foolish, as that’s not how the game is designed.

Greatsword feels mandatory for questing

in Guardian

I’ve been levelling a Guardian, and though he’s low level, I feel kind of disappointed. It’s not that I dislike the role of a support character (which the Guardian nicely fits), but I feel like my options for questing are limited. I can put on a greatsword, or, I can autoattack mobs to death with another weapon.

Are there any other good weapons or weapon combinations that I’m missing, the primary purpose of which is to kill mobs, rather than to provide assistance to a party that I’m 99% of the time not with?

Because Anet has this magical power that lets them detect the number of runs people have done? Interesting.

But that does make me interested if they have an actual hidden statistic that tracks total dungeon runs.

If they didn’t have analytics tracking the number of instances entered, and the number of bosses downed, I would be shocked. It’s not a particularly difficult counter to add to a game’s code.

People need to stop walking into dungeons that give tokens for orange 80 gear in all green/blue gear

Bingo.

I can’t count how many great sword warriors I’ve seen jump into pug dungeons with their full glass cannon build and rage when they get wrecked. 5 signets and all traits/gear pushing damage. They charge, hit hundred blades, and get theirkitten handed to them.

Then they come here and complain that the dungeons are too hard.

but at what cost.. no one wants to die and die again.. having to waste money on repairing…

People who don’t want to die in dungeons should stop going in with glass cannon builds and face pulling every pack.

The dungeons are completeable without nearly as much stress as people are having. Instead of begging Anet to nerf the content, people should learn to play the game the way it was meant to be played. Throw on some gear that makes you tougher, a few defensive abilities, and some group boons. Pull cautiously and dodge intelligently.

It’s not rocket surgery.

You know why there aren’t many posts from people saying how much they love the dungeons? Because those people are too busy playing and enjoying the game to come here.

Just because all the whiners make the most noise, doesn’t make them right.

The reward isn’t the fancy pixels at the end of the run; the reward is clearing the content. And the harder it is, the more rewarding it is.

Adressing a split in the community

I can guarantee you that it’s not a 50/50 split. The people on these forums who yell that dungeons are fine are a minority.

The reason most of the voices on the forums are calling for nerfs, is because the people who think dungeons are fine are spending their time happily running dungeons. They think everything is just peachy, so they don’t want to spend time coming to the forums.

To quote PopeUrban.2578:

Hold alt and click any spot on your map to place a personal waypoint. Alt-click it again to remove it.

Hold shift and click on the map to ping points for teammates or draw lines on the minimap like you did in Guild Wars.
