ArenaNet: As a new player...

These changes greatly dishearten me (bloody 40 character title limit e.e)

I am not an idiot, nor are the vast majority of MMO players. Basic skills on a skill bar do not overwhelm me or any other MMORPG player save for those playing an MMORPG (not GW2 itself) for the first time.

I do not need training wheels added to my basic levelling experience, not do I need my hand held through learning how to press 1-0 on my number bar.

What I do need is; better introductory explanations of advanced features like traits, crafting, living story, dungeons, events, WvW and COMBOS - possibly one of the most unique and interesting aspects of GW2 combat that has 0 acknowledgement within the game and no introduction or tutorial (rather than them just being “there” and having to ask my guild for details), a better directed levelling experience (where to go, what to do. now that I will need to wait 10 full levels to actually begin my story, this worsens the problem) and more reason to effectively learn my classes ins and outs.

This new experience seems to treat you like an idiot who can’t press number bar keys and seems to give progression a gated, “pat-on-the-head” mentality (awww, you hit level 4? There’s a good boy, have a skill). I enjoyed being able to unlock skills through the active use of a particular weapon, and also to be able to have all skills available at level 2 if desired. Now from what I understand, to gain access to my entire skill bar I need to be level 20? Absurd and silly.

This is my own, personal opinion, but it is also that of someone who bought your game a little over a week ago and who has very little experience with the game itself, thus I assume would qualify as the target audience of a “new” player.

Honestly, this hand-holding, casual mentality is insulting, causes gameplay to be frustrating and gated, rather than rewarding, and just kind of seems totally and utterly counter-intuitive to making the new player experience a “better” one

TL;DR: As a new player I don’t need my hand held and my head patted while I’m spoon-fed basic game features at a snail’s pace, I need clear, concise direction and knowledge regarding the advanced features of the game like traits, dungeons, crafting and WvW, which currently has little/no in-game tutelage and requires wiki research or pestering guild members to learn about properly.

Maxwell.7843 Expertly summarises my feelings here.

“GW2 was my fist mmorpg.
The game did feel overwhelming during the first hour or so, BUT not because I had a skill bar! To me the quantity of skills was never a problem, and I remember that when my character was low level I wished I had more utilities unlocked, to make the fights more interesting and varied.
What made the game overwhelming was the huge amount of stuff not covered by the tutorial, stuff that I could figure out only thanks to the wiki.
This update “dumbs down” things that for me were never difficult to grasp, while not addressing the things that actually need a Google search.
So, to me, the game now is actually less accessible: not only it still lacks a good and complete tutorial (that was what it needed in the first place), now leveling is a worse experience too.

Fashion and what looks “good” are incredibly subjective.

As for Aion, ArenaNet and NCSoft are entirely different companies and Aion is a korean port game. NCSoft is the owner of ANet, doesn’t mean anything has to be similar.

I for one enjoy having a game where not every armour makes you half naked and glowing with about 100 different particle effects and auras.

We’re all gamers, whether we drop in for a few hours in a very busy life schedule, or play for 12 hours a day religiously. GW2 has found a great balance for all, in my opinion.

The Skin vs Outfit divide. Anet pls

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: rapthorne.7345

rapthorne.7345

So as can be seen in the numerous threads regarding Balthazar’s regalia and other outfits released previously, there’s a huge divide in the community over releasing armour skins vs releasing outfits.

A simple solution is proposed and seems to me to be the clear and easy way to keep as many people happy as possible: Release these in the gem store as both costumes AND armour skins. I’m sure that not only would it keep a larger portion of the community happy, but it would also be good for gem sales, too.

If there are technical limitations or reasons as to why this solution isn’t viable, it would be great to get detail on this, as many community members are getting frustrated over the lack of armour skin releases in comparison with costume releases of late.

Time to refocus and clarify GW2's goals?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gaile, I think most of us (on the forums, before a certain someone comes at me with an unwelcome passive-aggressive response) just want to cut through NCSoft’s (and I know it’s NCSoft’s, ArenaNet can’t have changed that much since GW1) PR crap and just want to be given the information that so many other titles go completely out of their way to deliver to their customers (Because each and every one of us is, after all, a paying customer).

“Not wanting to raise expectations” is a terrible, terrible excuse for not delivering information. Staying completely silent has a far more adverse effect on the community than a few idiots getting bent out of shape because something mentioned as a development possibility didn’t happen.

Any producer of content, across any industry, absolutely needs to keep their clients/customers/investors/etc informed of their content directions, lest they run the risk of losing those potential investors (which isn’t as much of an issue for GW2 admittedly, with it being buy to play).

There’s absolutely no valid reason for the silence, and if it is your company policy, then that policy needs to change, and change swiftly.

I’m in love with GW2. It’s a beautiful game, an amazing concept, and most importantly an amazing community, but I am quickly losing faith in the developers.

I appreciate Gaile’s input when it happens, but (Having worked in PR myself) I recognise that what Gaile is doing isn’t really communication, rather than attempting to give the illusion of communicating to try to calm the playerbase, instead of actively working on solving the communication issues.

We need to know what direction the game we love is going, plain and simple. If that comes with a few disappointments, then so be it. Following a lit path is much better than being lost in the dark.

Trying to convince my friends to buy GW2 and listing off everything that makes me play GW2 over any other game has made me realise just how much I adore the game.

  • Amazing quality graphics
  • Great gameplay experience
  • fast paced, fun combat mechanics
  • Absolutely no pay to win aspects in terms of competitive advantages
  • Amazing, friendly community (for the most part)
  • diverse and fantastic lore
  • casual enough to please weekend warriors, but with enough content to keep most people busy and engaged
  • fun and well balanced PvP
  • I could go on and on
  • Played practically every single day for 8 months now and still find the game as fun as I did on day one

Thank you, ANet, for making a game I can truly be at home with. It’s easy to tell Tyria was crafted with passion and care, and I’m so very thankful to the person who convinced me to start playing. I just hope I can keep convincing more people to play every day.

Ranger or Guardian: Best DPS In PvE?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

rapthorne.7345

Ranger has the highest dps of the two if we’re talking flat damage in full berserker set ups.

Having said that, if I was given a choice between having a guardian in my party or having a ranger, I’d pick the guardian every time, due to the sheer amount of party support they offer.

Every class can dish out a hell of a lot of damage if built for it, and guardian can offer far more to a party than ranger can.

I also actively play both guardian and ranger, and can vouch that guardians are far more useful in parties

GW2’s music is absolutely bloody amazing, and I could never imagine playing the game without the music on. Every region has it’s own musical flair that lets you know exactly which part of Tyria you’re in.
Every track is memorable to me because of how well they portray what they are supposed to, from the relaxed, soothing music of the shiverpeaks to the intensity of combat, I love it all.

HoT After the Hype

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I have to raise one major point of concern with the expansion:

Once the hype dies and map activity isn’t as high, players seeking to complete HoT content are going to be facing an absolute nightmare unless they can get other people to help them from their guild/friends list. Solo unfriendly events, champions at hero points and poor low population scaling on just about everything will mean people that start HoT in the months and years to follow will be in for an incredibly tough time ahead.

Will anything be done to address this for the sake of the long term health of the HoT content?

Chronomancer gets an entirely unique mechanic added to the game. Dragonhunter gets recycled ranger mechanics and a jumble of things that just feel out of place. I love guardian as a class, and I guess I was just hoping for something… more?

Proposal Overview:

  • Individual Guild Member Influence Shops

Goal of Proposal:

  • To offer members in a guild incentives to gather influence, rather than just have it as a collective thing there for the guild

Proposal Functionality:

  • Include in the world several shop NPC’s which allow you to spend your individually contributed guild influence on various personal rewards, perhaps gear, or skins, etc etc. something nice (similar in function to our current Karma vendors)
  • Allow each guild member to check and monitor their influence gains and individual influence “balance” in the guild interface
  • Gives a reason/motivation for gathering influence
  • Ensure that spending individual influence points does not detract from a guild’s total influence (for example, have a total:available style balance)

Associated Risks

  • I imagine those who have been in one guild for their entire GW life may have mountains of influence to spend, but this can be allieviated by making items gained from these vendors untradable and unsalvagable/forgable

Criticism locked without response or reason?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

rapthorne.7345

Why are topics with valid, constructive critique getting locked without so much as a moderator response?

Is it taboo for players to suggest how things can be done better, or point out flaws in the way ANet does things? Only bad companies attempt to suppress and silence criticism, rather than act on it.

Players post here to vent frustrations because we have no one from ANet to reliably communicate to about issues (even though we supposedly have a dedicated forum communications team, HA!). By blatantly locking all potentially critical threads and posts, all it does it end up looking bad on ANet as a company, implying they simply don’t want to hear what they could be doing better and that their customer’s opinions do not matter.

Dragons are beings of magic. Look at the shatterer, a creature made almost entirely of solid crystal, yet he (and all the other, lesser dragons seen in the sky over blazeridge) can fly.

Tyria is a world where asura can float while swinging a sword as tall as they are, thieves can teleport across sizable distances, bows and firearms never require knocking with arrows or reloading and a great deal of things deemed impossible in our world happen on a regular basis.

Just because the Tyrian world is governed by similar forces such as gravity doesn’t mean that other, contradictory, forces aren’t also in play.

My advice is stop over thinking a fantasy setting and simply enjoy it.

General Reaper Feedback

in Necromancer

Posted by: rapthorne.7345

rapthorne.7345

RS2 needs to either stop advancing when a target is hit or drag the target with it like the revenant staff skill does. how it is right now makes it horribly unreliable and incredibly clunky for skirmishes

Overall greatsword feels far too slow for it’s damage, it’s too easy to evade the attacks in pvp (as predicted) and the damage is very underwhelming for the attack speed, either up the damage or (ideally) increase the attack speed to be on par with other greatsword attacks.

RS in general feels weaker than it should be, even when using the attack speed booster mastery, the damage just seems underwhelming.

The elite shout just isn’t very good at all for the cooldown it has.

I feel that there should be some sort of passive damage mitigation within reaper’s shroud, as HoT mobs pack a serious punch, and being a light armour class all we really have to mitigate damage as a melee front liner is our HP pool, we don’t have the regen of the warrior, evades of a thief or mitigation of a guardian, we need some sort of passive defense mechanism

Is the intention to deincentivize dungeons
Yes

That response is all I need to know that ANet are on the very wrong path.

You should NEVER deincentivise the use of content created in the game in such a way.

What you should do is redesign the dungeons to be worth the reward they offer.

Is it a long term,. high effort solution? Yes, but it’s a far better solution than just giving a giant “kitten you” to the dungeon community.

It’s an absolutely terrible design direction to simply abandon such a huge chunk of lore based, story-centric content just because fixing the issue requires effort and because you can’t think of any other way to incentivise fractals and raids over dungeons.

Fractals are seeing a revamp, why can’t dungeons?

over the top cosmetics are what bring in money in an F2P business model. GW2 has shifted from game sales to gem store sales being their focus. for them to honour their “cosmetic and convenience” only gem store approach, the items in the gem store have to be flashy, visually appealing and make people stand out from non-spenders. this is what gets people to open their wallets in an F2P game where buying your way to the top of WvW/PvP isn’t really an option

Alrighty. I’m really enjoying my ranger, lots of fun and cool pets to go along with it, however one thing I’m not fond of that seems to be (unless I’m mistaken) a huge trend is the large number of “trench coat and feathered hat with a face mask” armour sets that all look exactly the same.

On my guardian, all the armour sets in the game I obtained as I leveled had their own unique feel and look to them, but all medium armour looks exactly the same (and in my own, personal, opinion doesn’t look very visually appealing). Are there any higher levelled medium armour sets that don’t look like this, or will I have to suffer looking like a tit until I can get skins or an outfit?

So basically the op wrote 8 paragraphs about how people are mad that the devs are not releasing new content while they are working on new content?

Interesting.

What would you prefer, having one unique meal a day and nothing between that one meal, or having a repetitive but regular source of food.

Just because they are working on new content does not mean their handling of things has been good. at the very least they could quite easily enable SAB (something the community has been demanding for a long, long time), but they don’t.

This is a double kick to the genitals of the community because not only is it well within their power to give us this content with little effort (people are just asking for rereleases, after all, nothing new) but they are consciously denying people that content despite knowing full well that the community want it. That is what I dislike about how they are handling HoT’s lead up.

This is supposed to be a time of hype and activity for GW2, but it’s driving my guild members and friends away and even turning them off of the idea of buying HoT too.
