No thank you.

One of the major things I love about GW2 is that they’ve captured the action element of combat without resorting to an action-style combat system. The main thing that kept me away from Tera is the FPS style aiming and combat system

[Suggestion] LWS2 Laurel Vendor Addition

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

rapthorne.7345

rapthorne, I’m not discussing items offered through the actual Living World Season 2 content. What I’m making mention of is the items offered through limited-time events, such as the Christmas one, which offered an additional home instance node as well as the Star of Gratitude, which I explicitly mentioned. These items are just as unavailable as those that were offered in Season 1; gems are not a factor in any way, shape, or form.

Seasonal content will return, I’m certain, during the appropriate season. For example the candy corn node returned last year when it was previously believed to be only available for the Halloween content of 2013

CDI-Guilds- Raiding

in CDI

Posted by: rapthorne.7345

rapthorne.7345

Raids should absolutely not be guild content. This forces the idea that to successfully complete an event, you HAVE NO CHOICE but to join a huge guild.

There’s already some element of this with tequatl/triple trouble, in that it’s very difficult to get credit/even get on a map without joining a specific guild that only does these two events..

Should raiding guilds be viable? Absolutely. Should they be mandatory? No.

Article about Game Dev myths.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: rapthorne.7345

rapthorne.7345

This is a bad article for several reasons.

It takes broad, sweeping generalisations of negative feedback about certain areas of game development, and just supplies the PR from the game company that is designed to reduce the impact of such criticism.

Every game company is different, every game suffers from it’s own issues, every development studio does things in a different way. The issues of one studio (EA: Greed, poor QA, constant DRM pushes) are not universal (ANet: Lack of decent developer/community interaction until the HoT lead up), so getting some random PR response to generalised criticism/misconceptions about game development really doesn’t do anything useful.

But then that’s why I pay no attention to anything Kotaku publishes

Starting to hate Guild Wars 2 [RESOLVED]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

rapthorne.7345

I’ll forgive your high expectations as you said GW2 is your first MMO, but I’ll say this.

As someone who has been playing F2P games for over a decade, I can easily and without hesitation say that GW2 is by far the highest quality MMO on the market today.

Go check out some other MMORPG’s around, and you’ll be able to see just how good we have it here.

You think the crafting grind is bad? Check out other games where every aspect of them is a grind.

Crafting above 400 (ie, ascended) is designed to be a long term goal, not something achievable in a matter of weeks.

I will agree with you on the game’s lack of guidance and help, this is probably GW2’s major flaw (and the thing the NPE should have, but did not, fix).

What I think you’ve done here is burned yourself out on GW2. Played it too intensively over a period of time.

Take a break from things, chill out a bit (go play some other games for comparison’s sake – you’ll appreciate GW2 a hell of a lot more) and try to just take things slow

Guild Wars 2: The Second Year in numbers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: rapthorne.7345

rapthorne.7345

Of course they won’t release any statistics be cause they would show how abysmal the game performes compared to the first year. Even the first year numbers were presented in a shady way (max players who played at one moment in this year, oh btw it was something with 400k people, compare this to Destiny: 3.4 million).

Fact is: WoW still holds 6 million people who pay monthly while GW2 is free and is played by a couple of 100k people.

WoW has always had the resources of a major game developer at hand, a staff of several thousand, and worldwide brand recognition/loyalty to keep players in. GW2 is supported by a small team crushed under the boots of NCSoft’s demands.

Destiny is also a cross platform game, which allows it to reach an incredibly large audience (The vast majority of Destiny players are console players, I believe), whereas GW2 is pc-exclusive. On top of being an FPS (one of the most popular next-gen game genres)

If ArenaNet had a larger team and NCSoft was not a part of the picture, the game would be a booming success and likely dwarf other F2P games.

That’s the other aspect of GW2 that affects it. GW2 is in it’s own niche of Buy to Play. Once you have the game, it’s yours for good. No subs, just gaming. Games likw WoW compel you to play them to get your money’s worth from the sub, whereas GW2 seems to be more aimed at a casual experience. This also keeps away the F2P gamers who may not be willing to invest in the game before being able to try it out (one of the reasons WoW implemented a perm free account option to allow players to play up to level 20 under restrictions)

GW1 and GW2 are very different beasts.

GW1 was essentially an RPG with multiplayer lobbies, whereas GW2 is a full scale MMO. with that MMO transition, there’s always going to be a loss in personalisation and character importance (I mean let’s face it, in the GW2 storyline, you’re not even the star, just a supporting character)

Tomes of knowledge still exist, and if you tome yourself to 80 (thereby avoiding the “repetitive grind” you seem to dislike) you will have enough HP to unlock absolutely everything in the core class. every skill, every trait, just by being level 80.

This is vastly superior to the old system, where you could tome to 80 and have nothing unlocked at all, and still have to shell out gold and skill points for traits.

Now just by virtue of being level 80, you can get everything currently available to your class at no extra cost.

Everyone talking about modern engines seems to be forgetting that GW2 was built on a modified version of the GW1 engine. Obviously it will not have the features of more recent engines, and to suggest that ANet should invest exorbitant time and money in completely replacing a satisfactory engine is ridiculous.

But ANet have clearly shown that they are willing and able to add new features to the game engine, as can be seen with several revenant skills and the hang glider mechanic, among other things.

ANet developed the engine themselves, after all. thinking they can’t/won’t expand and update it as the game grows is a bit silly

Dye frustration

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

unidentified dyes are pretty common in champion bags, and you can unlocked the full range of common dyes for a little under 8g if you buy direct from the TP.

Some dyes are very expensive either because they are very rare or very desirable (For example shadow abyss is so expensive because it is the only dye in the game that appears pure black on every single armour material variant).

Given that GW2 dyes are account wide, permanent unlocks, I feel their pricing and availability is very reasonable. Other games would have you pay $5 or much more for a single use customisation

I could go on and on.

About the only good thing about the current forum is the design looks pretty sleek, but the actual functionality is abysmal when you take in to account the fact that free hosted forums have many times more features and functions than a professional B2P game forum that requires game purchase to even participate in.I mean heck, GW2Guru has an infinitely better forum in terms of ease of use and functionality and it’s a fansite.

Assuming we can use Southsun Cove as an example (as, in regards to Anet creating content that is specifically designed for grind, it is rather similar) the answer is: No.

This ship is sinking and most of the players that loved Guild Wars left a long time ago. The rest of us will be leaving soon as well. I’d say the rats should flee the sinking ship, but Anet has them all hooked up to Skinner Boxes.

That seems overly negative. GW2 is consistently rated as one of the top MMORPG’s in the world and has a good population.

My point was mainly aimed at the natural progression of the player population. Sooner or later people will move on to other maps and the champion hero points are pretty much impossible to solo, as are many of the events in HoT

Disappointed by the leveling experience

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: rapthorne.7345

rapthorne.7345

I just got my first character ever to 80 (started the game a week ago or so) and I have to express how utterly disappointed I am in the levelling experience. The lack of direction and sheer monotony of map grind to fill the massive level jumps between personal story quests (most dynamic events/heart quest things involve kill this, kill that, defend x, etc – always the same thing) lead to me simply running laps in the WvW map Edge of the Mists. What’s most disappointing is that this non-stop follow the leader is the leveling method pretty much everyone has recommended to me as the main way to reach 80.

I can’t help but feel disheartened and disappointed by this. I’m hoping that now I’m 80, the game will fully open up, and I sincerely hope that the leveling revamp coming at some point soon will make the grind up to 80 far less monotonous and mind-numbing, as I aim to create a necromancer after it has been implemented

Can the Community Team Refrain from Politics?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It saddens me to see how many people are split on this issue of treating people as equal to one another.

Perhaps society hasn’t advanced all too much in the past century, after all. Everyone should have the right to have their love and relationship recognised by society and now, at least in America, that will happen. About bloody time, I say.

As for this being about politics: it isn’t. It’s about narrow religious beliefs and, fundamentally, Church and State are supposed to be separate so let’s be real here; this is not about politics, it’s about people of specific religious views being offended that something that goes against their religious belief system (regardless of how biggoted and narrow minded it is) has been recognised by society and is being supported across the country by a multitude of companies and corporations. Even facebook and twitter are letting you publicly show your support for this great victory in the battle for equality for all.

Now if ANet had tweeted something to do with confederate flag, that’s something I’d be entirely against. As it is, Anet simply tweeted their support of equality for all. Good on them
