Next, someone is going to make a post complaining about eating virtual sugary sweets in a video game and how it’s disrespectful to people with eating disorders.

It’s not real alcohol being drunk by real people. It’s pixels being clicked on by other pixels. If pixel alcohol bothers you that much then sit at home and read a book or something. (Don’t watch TV or read the bible. TV has alcohol ads and the bible talks about drinking wine).

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

So you made a Wintersday achievement out of boozing. I really cannot say it amuses me in the slightest. Several of my relatives were alcoholics (past tense because they’re dead now… it’s not something that can be cured). I’ve seen what alcohol does to people and I think it’s just plain wrong to showcase the over-consumption of alcohol as something festive and desirable. Let alone in a game rated PG 12, when in many countries 12 is WAY below the legal age for alcohol consumption.

I have relatives and friends who are alcoholics, in various states of denial, and have been to the funerals of relatives whose bodies could not sustain the abuse.

Which is why I actually really like this achievement.
Because:
It points out that people do indeed use holidays as an excuse to drink, being relived that they don’t have to hide away or find other excuses to get drunk. Because it’s festive, riiight?

It takes a while (unless you have a lot of gold) so it keeps on reminding. Now that I think more about it I’d actually be offended if it were only the same amount as the candy canes. You can’t brush away alcoholism with toothpaste after all.

Until completion it locks away a desirable (for some) skin. Which if you want you have to keep drinking and keep being reminded.

I doubt this is an attempt to actually dissuade people from drinking too much real alcohol in real life. But maybe someone who is playing thinks twice before taking just one more drink and maybe make a relative or friend just a bit more sad.

These are just my thoughts, take from it what you will.
I think it’s a good achievement.

you really shouldnt play games, especially games where you slaughter animals and people by the thousand. Showcasing murder and slaughter is ok but in game collecting of drinks is not? going by your post history you actually hate just about everything you touch in GW2, ‘alcohol’ is the new one. You insult your relatives by using them to make a point.

I don’t think it’s possible or even beneficial for devs to think what might or might not offend people since we tend to be triggered by different things. Some people have lost their children to gunfire, some people have been beaten by their drunk father and in some cultures it would be blasphemy for women to wear as skimpy clothes as we can in this game. There were a lot of offended people when they announced the airplane thingy for april fools because of that one plane crashing.

You simply can’t please everyone and getting rid of jokes, booze, guns and skimpy clothes would probably make me and many others quit the game ’cos the game would just be so boring.

Offense is always taken on a personal level, never given to anyone.

I also have several relatives that have had serious health issues with alcoholism.

I hope your post isn’t a troll post OP, because in a way I think that would be far worse than some light-hearted cider-swigging in-game. But if you’re serious, I can totally acknowledge that you have been hurt in some way by alcoholism.

I agree with what Wanze said- if you think that alcohol is a bit of a raw spot for you, make sure that you check ESRB/PEGI ratings and avoid anything that contains it. If the warnings are there, it’s your responsibility to read them and censor yourself from such things. Scroll to the very bottom of this page and the warnings will even be there: “TEEN: Blood, Mild Language, Use of Alcohol, Violence”

For most people, alcohol is a fairly innocuous substance that just makes things a little more merry. The Festive Imbiber and Connoisseur of Confectionary titles are a little nod to the incredibly excessive alcohol, party-items and sweet titles in GW1. Binge drinking in-game is not harmful in itself- kids aren’t going to play the game and then think that’s it’s ok/normal to drink 10k beers.

Tl;dr: You cannot blame A-net for including a “hot-topic” that they have advertised/warned about. It would be like somebody with a peanut allergy complaining to a company that they had a reaction to their peanut butter, no?

Why this game will never have Legendary armor

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Luckily, Legendary armor isn’t relevant to most of the people playing this game anyways.

yeah really funny how they do not care about the shine armor set,s like they used to in

gw1 . in gw2 only thing they care about now is there bright shiny armor and weapon

skin,s for get about the stats just make sure the skins are nice and shiny and pretty and

glow . and wish to pay top gold for them nice bright shiny skins . which makes no since

but hey why care just give us them glowing bright shiny skins, and we all happy

campers lol

15k armor in GW1 didn’t have any better stats than that which you could buy at a vendor for lvl 20 characters.

We were happy about that btw because GW1 was more about how you played your build ( Buildwars) rather than doing a rehash of gear wars like WoW and other mmo’s do over and over. And personally if I wanted that I’d just go play WoW again.

My post will be flamed but I will say it. I wish t6 mats (in general) and the lodestones + giant eyes were preserved in terms of rarity. With these new map rewards, they are being handed out like candies. I am not asking map rewards to be removed but atleast lower the drop rates of these map rewards.

They are low.

And how about no. The fact that there’s now a reliable way to get them is good.

The point is valid, T6 mats are moving toward becoming trash loot.

Creating a fake scarcity is not the way to fix them being trash. Creating more avenue’s for usage is the right way to go about fixing the issue. The only reason blood and charged loadstone have any value is their relative usefulness compared to other materials.

More better to keep the “bad” activity in a virtual world, I say! I don’t drink much RL, being allergic to alcohol beyond a sip or two. Yet in LARPs and tabletops and MMO’s I’ve RP’d drunk characters. It didn’t make me wish I could really get hammered — the hangover before even getting tipsy is a fantastic dissuader.

I grew up watching Bond films and daydreaming spy adventures. I even played Assassin in college, for all of three days until the paranoia made it impossible for me to relax or study. Somehow I never developed a taste for real guns.

Entertainment is a way to vent off any violent or licentious impulses, not a trigger to make people imitate them. Unless they’re already heading for the behavior and just model the specifics on entertainment they’ve seen.

(PopeUrban, I agree with you, but still felt a response was warranted).

Lanfear, you know people don’t teach kids anymore. They dump um at the nearest daycare so mommy &daddy (or mommy&mommy, or daddy&daddy, or Idon’tidentifywithagender&genderstereotypesaresoooopasse) can continue their own lives. Also TV.

Besides, the real problem is obviously the extreme racial bias against skritt. It teaches kids that immediately resorting to violence and physically abusing people different than you is ok if its in the holiday spirit. (Note: While rewarding you for doing exactly what the skritt are trying to do)

It’s not just the alcohol that’s a problem. I’m extremely upset about having all the food pushed at us. What about the diabetics, the bing eaters, people trying to lose weight, the anorexics, the vegetarians? They shouldn’t have to be forced to eat sweets and meat to get the boosts. All the food in game should be low calorie, high roughage wholesome fruits and vegetables. Not this crap they’re forcing upon us.

As others have mentioned, once the official forums come online, the community moved here.
There is, however, the fact that GW2guru turned REALLY toxic shortly after the game launched. It quickly became where everyone that disliked anything, and sometimes seemingly everything, about GW2 went to go on long winded rants about the game. And God help you if you posted anything positive about gw2 or anet there.

I have no problems with grinding .. if i can choose what i grind and i have something
i can buy for that at the end.

However .. in HoT .. they force you to grind what they want you to grind and at the
end all you get is nothing or just an unlock for the next grind.

And really .. 3 total new armorsets in a fullprice expansion after a dev proudly
posted that we will get no more armorsets in the gemstore but instead ingame ?
Since we got only Carapace new in the last 1.5 years i really thought we will get
at least 15-20 new sets with HoT … but kittening whole THREE ????

At the moment i really prefer grinding in Marvel Heroes instead.

How do they force you to grind?

I don’t know what long terms goals you have for your own life, but there are people out there who aren’t actually happy to announce that playing some MMO is the thing they plan to do the next five years in absence of more fulfilling hobbies. Calling it grind puts the focus on the mind-numbing activity it is. Cook for 10k hours and you’re a chef. Play piano for 10k hours and you’re a pianist. Farm game for 10k hours and you’ve just wasted your life.

This is silly. Time enjoyed is not time wasted, and the idea of a more valuable hobby is an illusion. Becoming skilled in an activity, like learning the piano, is only worthwhile if the process of learning it and doing it is enjoyable… otherwise I think it would be hard to justify that the pride and prestige of finally being skilled are so pleasurable that, on their own, they were worth spending all that time on.

For many people, GW2 is an enjoyable, shared experience in the here and now. I think that obliging yourself to grind away at a piano or martial art when you would enjoy yourself more with another activity is problematic because it seems like a lot of people put an emphasis on these hobbies as a form of self-betterment, and judge each other based on each individual’s participation in such things. Therefore, a lot of the pressure to do those kinds of things results from a fear of being different, or a fear or people, or a fear of shame. These are unhealthy motivations.

The fact is just that everything is a waste of life. Spend it how you will, and don’t feel guilty about how you spend your time if you enjoy what you do.

So you’re not a gamer, why are you even here? Playing a game for 10k hours seems just fine by me if I was willing to do it for 10k hours in the first place. There’s nothing in this game, though, that takes even remotely that long.

- I am a gamer. I’ve played lots of games during my life. Most of them were good experiences. 20-40 hours of high-quality content for a fair price. It used to be that developers would strive create an experience or a challenge for players to face. These days there’s a talk of “player retention”. What a bizarre concept. It sounds like some drug dealer wanting to hook up his customers so they come back for more. All the “dailies” and achievements are just there to hook you up once the game has lost its appeal. Sometimes it’s hard to see what the core of the game is with all the fluff. What if there was no items? What do we need them for? The slot machine effect, that’s what. Reinforcement for player to keep on playing indefinitely. Minimum effort for maximal player retention.

Is this what “a game” means to you?

I think perhaps you don’t understand the concept of an MMO. MMOs are supposed to be a mainstay game, the kind of experience you can spend thousands of hours on over the course of years. They typically have a story to beat, but that isn’t what the game is fundamentally about. MMOs use extrinsic rewards (e.g. shiny armor and weapon skins) which are only achievable after repeating content to keep players playing long after they’ve done everything.

So your evaluation of what GW2 is trying to do is pretty accurate. Your mistake is thinking that that’s a mistake. If you don’t like it, then perhaps this isn’t the right game or genre for you. There are plenty of other games out there you can play for 20-30 hours before moving on to another game. GW2 isn’t one of them.

Actually, many people simply want to be able to use the Elite skill the HOT ads made a prominent feature of but failed to mention the huge time it takes to actually be able to fully use it.

Huge time? What huge time are we talking about? Even if you have no Core Tyria hero points, getting the 25 needed for full Elite from the HoT maps really doesn’t take long.

You can’t NOT GRIND if you want to progress in the maps.

I must be playing another game them … I refuse to grind, and I haven’t perceived any need to do so in HoT so far. I’ve casually completed a couple of maps, played all kinds of events (but by far not everything yet), and enjoyed the new maps with several characters. I could’ve sworn I’ve progressed my account and characters a good bit since the release of the expansion.

If I hit a road block, I go do something else, and eventually I’ll find I’ve progressed to the point where the former road block is gone by itself. No grind required. It’s really not much different from me trying to run a level 20 elementalist to the Gates of Arah a while back. I tried to get as far as I could, then after banging my head against the wall (aka mobs beyond Fort Trinity in the Straits fo Devastation) a couple of times I turned to do something more fun. I’ll get back on the road to Arah with her eventually, just like I’ll get to pick up the mastery point in Tangled Depth that requires Leyline gliding one of these days … I’m sure it won’t go anywhere while I progress in other parts of the maps without grinding.

Heart of Thorns is NOTHING BUT A GRIND.

You can’t NOT GRIND if you want to progress in the maps. You have to MAX OUT THE GLIDER to use the edy currents in Tangled Depths! Unbelievable. Took a perfectly good game and turned it into a grinder….thanks a lot…and what sucks even worse is that you end up in Verdant Brink with everyone else who has to grind to progress because those are the fastest missions….thanks again.

I think you do not quite understand ANet’s definition of “no grind” – it’s meant to get to the highest level and to be competitive in the game. They kind of broke that with their Ascended Weapons and Armor (because that is a grind to get those things done) but as far as HoT is affected …

You will get by with Gliding up to updraft and the jumping mushroom – certain areas of DS are a no-go unless you also master the poison lore. So with about all traits unlocked with about 50% you’re still good to go. And if you use a bit of buff food, do the storyline and do a few metas on each map you’ll be there really, really fast.

Now go to ESO and start a new character – see how long you need to get to veteran rank 1. Go to your newly unlocked campaign and see how long it takes to get to veteran level 6 – and you’re now even there halfway! THAT is grind … spending a week in GW 2 HoT to max out masteries is not.

More dances would be fun, as would some of the previously mentioned emotes (e.g. /shoo). This game has such great visuals, a little fun in the form of emotes, something available in heaps in practically every MMO, here and there would be nice.

No, I am sorry, but I never understood this logic. Basically all MMOs have multiple races and also TIMES more emotes.

I agree with the OP, the amount of emotes in GW2 is pitiful and was one of my first disappointments when I started playing the game. Sure, it’s not a big deal or a game breaker, but emotes really help me immerse myself in the game and I actually use them constantly. Or used to in other games, in GW 2 aside from the occasional wave at a guildie…
