That last part is the most important. Reasonable people view someone sitting in a map chat shouting spoilers for a movie that just came in theaters on Friday, not all the world’s population has seen, and was locked out to large parts of the population due to ticket/seating limits, as nothing more than rude trolling. Ruining a good time for everyone else.

Forget, for a moment, the 5-10 people in the map that do not care or have already seen the movie. What about the other 90-190 that DO care and/or haven’t seen it? And even flipping those numbers to assume only 5-10 haven’t seen it while the other 90-190 have, it doesn’t matter. The fact of the matter is that purposely trying to ruin something in-game for someone else is against the game’s Rules of Conduct is punishable as such under the execution of a Customer Service/GM decision.

By your argument, why is this ruling only brought to the new Star Wars movie but not Citizen Kane etc. as mentioned in Gaile’s post on page 3? What about those 5-10 people who haven’t seen it? How does it ruin something in-game less than the new Star Wars movie spoilers? I’m not asking you directly, I’m just trying to understand Gaile’s posts from page 3.

Using such serious words like sadism and harrasment in such trivial context devalues them. What kind of a jelly-spined creature are you if you can equate this with sadism?
Your feelings are not measure for the rest of the world.

Actually I find “trolling” to be the word the trivialize and tries to excuse the basic, fundamental fact that this is a person who derives pleasure from other people’s discomfort.

Would that categorize pranks as well as form of sadism? Since it’s so black and white issue I can almost see no difference between deriving pleasure from torturing people and throwing a water filled balloon…

so, leeme get this straight: instead of reporting and banning instance hijackers or genuine map griefers, you want people to report other people who spoil a MOVIE that’s not, in any way, shape or form related to GW2, to CS so you can ban them.

uh, really? are you really sure THAT’s what you should have CS be focusing on? Actually, There’s an idea! You guy’s didn’t ban ANYONE when they were trolling in map chat by spoiling HoT’s story. Why didn’t you ban them?

Pathetic how this thread got even started and is still going on. Like your life is gonna take a dark turn after you hear a spoiler from the new Star Wars movie. Even so, if spoilers from the new Star Wars are okay to be reported, then all spoilers should be. What privileges the new Star Wars movie from other movies?
Sad how this community turned to be a bunch of easily offended whiners.

The silly part about this whole thing, besides the fact that the most active topic in a game’s forum is about movie spoilers…is that it’s always been going on. People have been spoiling stuff…always, including HoT’s story. There was never a huge explosion of QQ over that. But because it’s THIS movie in particular, everyone is now all up in arms about it. I haven’t seen the movie. I have seen some of the spoilers. I didn’t crawl under the desk and sob. I honestly fail to see what the big deal is. If someone is THAT huge of a fan, I’d think after a week they would have seen it already.

This could be a slippery slope, as others have said. From now on if anyone spoils anything that I don’t want to see being talked about, I can and am encouraged to report them for it.

The censure is getting serious here.

No. They hysteria is getting serious.

Support has ALWAYS kept its own standards fairly secretive. We’ve been told to let support know when this is going on. Whether they will act at all, what the consequences will be, and what threshold of raw jerkishness prompts punishment is something we WILL NEVER KNOW.

The basic practical rule is in effect: if you’re afraid of Support’s scrutiny, maybe you shouldn’t do it. If you can’t self-moderate, there’s always the possibility they’ll do it for you (and to you).

Banning someone because they spoil a movie is beyond unacceptable and it should be punishable by law when it comes to game that you payed for.

If you are so destroyed by spoilers then close all chat windows and be done with it but don’t turn spoilers into the worst kittening thing you can say to people.

Spoilers are bad, okay, i get it. But its by no means a reason to ban anyone. I dont remember anyone getting banned for spoiling GoT. SW has nothing to do with GW at all. This thread has no reason to be here, everything else that wasnt related to gw2 would be deleted already. Its just pure bs.

i don’t necessarily enjoy or support people who are jerks in map chat. the game would be better off without them.

that said, please don’t use valuable resources on issues like this one. it’s a civil case and this game is littered with bigger problems that anet can address more appropriately.

Srsly, banning people that does it while people that grefing, hacking, afk on matches, exploitings bugs runs without any consequences? That must be Anet new standarts. I dont even know why i still play at this point. It is by far the most kittened thing i have seen in my “gaming life”

What next? Using chat to say that you dont like x president will result in a ban as well? The censure is getting serious here.

Something everyone on this topic should watch.

This is an excellent video and get to the point of “Where does this begin and end ?”

As one of the people say in the video, “it is up to the individual to protect themselves, as there is no clear definition of what even begins to be a spoiler”

Let me also state here that i have ZERO sympathy for those individuals that intentionally and not in the context of a chat discussion just shoot out movie details.

even tho this has noting at all to do with the game or any thing at all . and the fact it bored me even more . watching these videos honestly has no point at all to video games or even guild wars 2 at all . wonders how long before this topic is now locked and hope fully the cs team makes it clear to all on this topic what the rules are for matters like this .

While I agree with you on the point about other things in the game more worthwhile discussing in the forums than this topic, this topic was made still and I shared the video only to try to contribute to the discussion.

And your boredom interests those invested in this discussion as much as this topic interests you.

What I’m saying is, if you have nothing to contribute to the discussion, you’re free to refrain from it. Your disdain is important only to yourself.

I say that being somebody who cannot understand the appreciation of the millions for a movie franchise that has little to offer beyond amateur direction, cringe-worthy acting, and the most banal dialog (not including Episode VII, I haven’t watched that one yet).

can i report someone for this cause that kitten is NOT COOL

Let me be clear about my earlier comment. At this point, I recommend that players who witness this do report the player who is posting spoilers using the in-game tool. In my opinion, spoilers are beyond rude, they’re intended to cause distress to others. I’ve asked CS for an official position, but I would recommend that you flag and report spoiler-ish comments and let the CS agents make a determination.

P.S. This applies to the current topic — Episode 7 — and does not include “Someone is someone’s father” or “Rosebud is…” or “Soylent Green is…” or any of the classic spoilers of days gone by.

What is with the about face, Gaile? You guys didn’t seem to care when I reported people for spoiling the Karka locations in LA mapchat up to 2 weeks after release. That is WAY WAY worse.

Everyone’s opinion has value.

I simply believe that our rules against harassment encompass this sort of situation, where there’s no legitimate reason to shout spoilers in game and that the only motivation would seem to be a desire to cause distress to others. That would seems to make such activities reportable offenses that our CS agents will analyze and react to, as appropriate. (And let’s be clear, this was not a conversation, this was merely one person trying his/her best to spoil the movie for as many players a possible. Some sort of warped sense of power, perhaps? Who knows??)

As we have always said, players are welcome to report questionable chat or comments about which they have concerns. And as Elden Arnaas mentioned, each situation will be reviewed and acted upon, or not, after an analysis by the team.

As to timing, with theatres sold out for days and day, even those with a heavy devotion to the film series may simply not have been able to see it yet. What’s a good shelf date for “No spoilers, please?” (And remember, I’m talking only the very current spoiler, not the ending of Anna Karenina. ) I’m willing to ask CS, and I’d like to have opinions here. Maybe one week? Two weeks? What do you think?

To be fair, there are very very few movies that have such a zealous following as well. That being said, while I agree with what you’ve said, there are those who will report genuine discussions just because those involved refused to take it to less global channels (which they arent exactly required to iirc), and the reporter refused to turn off map chat for a while or to block those involved in the conversation.

edit: for the post a few above, just because an opinion has value, does not mean it needs to be respected.

I am sorry but i have a big issue with this “Reporting Policy”.

So we are now going to start reporting everyone for anything that “may” spoil someone else life ? Whats the next movie or event we will pick to do this on ? Are political and religious events included ? What about cultural issues ?

Where does this end ?

Yes. I agree that its not “morally” right to be doing this, but whats next ?

“ANET, please put a gag order on everything and anything on the game because it will spoil my life !”

The whole internet, radio and TV is full of spoilers for the new Star Wars movie.

My local TV here in CT was discussing certain major events in the movie 1 day after it showed !!! Talk about spoilers there on 6 pm news !

I say “live and live”.

Like someone else said, for those that do not want to be “spoiled” set your chat to your guild, assuming you have no idiots there and leave there until you see the movie.

This “eye for an eye” approach is getting ridiculous.

Some common sense would go a long way, and some “under-reaction” rather than “over-reaction” would also help.

My 10 cents…

Not a chance that CS would make spoilers bannable, then they would have to proly update their EULA and add a line “Writing about any kind of spoilers related to newly released books, movies, games, etc… is not allowed and will be inspected and punished if deemed as breaking EULA.”

Or something like that, what I think is really stupid, that movie was bad anyway if you are a fan of starwars. I personally never cared about spoilers, I like them and welcome them.

Everyone have their own opinion, so next time just block that person, or dont read what is he writing, instead of crying that you saw spoiler.

I doubt movie spoilers belong to excluded category of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech_by_country#United_States

when some one says this is It’s completely ridiculous. you can only see where they are going to next. and some times some are just too hard headed to see the light like i said before and this is how i think it should go in these cases . frist time 60 day bann second time a 90 day ban . and the 3rd time prema bann. and i hope the cs team posts on this saying it clear for others to get there heads around. and it is cases like this why i keep my chats turned off .

So you think it’s entirely justified for someone to lose their account for two months, perhaps three, for discussing a movie?

And then you suggest they PERMANENTLY lose their account? An account some have spent THOUSANDS of hours on, because they mentioned something that has absolutely literally nothing to do with Guild Wars 2? This is simply preposterous.

Okay, okay, okay.

Everyone calm right down.

It’s. A. kittening. Movie.

Okay?

It’s just a movie, that has nothing to do with Guild Wars, absolutely nothing. Yet people are DEMANDING others lose access to their accounts and hell, Gaile is supporting this.

Where, exactly, in the ToS does it say that posting of spoilers in chat is disallowed? What does this apply to? Where does it stop? What about the new James Bond movie? What about the Heart of Thorns story itself, something GW2 related?

Hell what about bloody Twilight?

This is ridiculous and you should all take a long hard look in the mirror. You’re suggesting and encouraging that people lose access to their accounts because of A MOVIE.

Where does this policy start? Where does it end? What if you GENUINELY WANT TO TALK STAR WARS? Are you going to get banned for talking about something you love?

What about a new book?

How LONG after release do we have? What about Game of Thrones?

I’m sorry Gaile but you’re being unreasonable, as is everyone else and I seriously hope someone at the CS team tells you this. It’s completely ridiculous.

This thread makes me not want to talk about any new movies in map chat now because I might get reported and banned.

Thanks, Gaile.

You’re being deliberately obtuse. This isn’t about casual conversation where someone accidentally lets slip a spoiler for someone else. This is a clear case of griefing that has no point and the player engaging in this should at least get a temporary (1 week or so) suspension.

The point 9is, you can’t police to prevent spoilers.

Say you start taking harsh measures against those that spoil on purpose, but not casual conversations. The trolls will simply start simulating conversations. Get a F2P account, go to a world boss in an starting area, and stalk talking to each other about the movie. So you will then start punishing casual conversations too?

And what about people making up fake spoilers for fun? They are not spoiling anything. But whoever hasn’t seen the movie doesn’t know they are spoilers unless they are very obvious fakes. Then you will punish those joking around?

At the end what you’ve done is setting rules that punish lots of innocent people because of the actions of a few dolyakasses.

No. When it comes to something like this, it’s each player’s responsibility to avoid getting spoiled. You can’t censor the entire world because of a few people that mind so much spoilers they’ll make such a big deal of something of no importance. It’s precisely the fact of people making such a big deal out of it what motivates them trolls to troll with it.

Trolls are like Merlin’s Queen Mab. Turn around, don’t look at them, don’t let them have power over you, and they disappear.

Cause distress within reasonable bounds of tolerance. My point is that this is becoming day by day outside of those reasonable bounds of tolerance.

Trust me, people are not banned for simply distressing another player. That’s evident from these very forums, this thread and in game.

perhaps online games aren’t for you then? If you can’t simply ignore others why put yourself in the middle of a mass of people…. just seems like a setup for failure :I

I’m actually not happy about some of the fractal changes. Sure, the increased gold yield is nice. But there’s also the following:

First they offer the opportunity to buy fractal weapon boxes for 20 pristines. So I buy fractal weapon boxes. Now I have the fractal skins, and they start dropping random fractal weapons almost daily for me. Instead of the Stabilizing Matrices that I need lots and lots of.

When you’re cursing your luck for getting a fractal skin instead of a measly single Stabilizing Matrix, it’s obvious that something is not right. These skins should drop in addition to the regular reward, not instead of it, because they’re drops of limited appeal. Even if you enjoy occasionally getting one of these skins as a drop, that elation will quickly pass when you keep getting skins you’ve already unlocked, again and again. Especially when you need hundreds of the drop they replace.

I do not agree with you. First of all these boxes are available when you complete lvl 50 fractals. Which means that you already are a high lvl player. At this point Rewarding you with a fractal weapon seems fair.
Then stabilizating matrice can be bought everywhere, TP, daylis…

Finally are you seriously crying about having awesome rewards?
That is really weird my friend.

I am actually really thankfull towards arena for finally giving us back good rewards in 5 man group content. It took some time, but in the long term we will all forget the 2 first months

You may think it’s stupid but that’s how GW2 is designed, so how stupid it may seem to you is irrelevant. Actually, it makes tons of sense for this game to implement a system where I can buy mats I need because of how you get rewarded in it. The cost of these items, or any other, is of primary importance to the way GW2 works. Anet has changed things like recipes because of it.

So while you sing your mantra of how stupid it is because it’s not what you think it should be, be aware that GW2 works this way for very fundamental reasons. It’s like this by design, intended to work this way and will continue to do so and influence the way the game is designed until the servers shut down.

I don’t see a problem with a system where you get something you don’t need but have a way to convert those items into things you do while benefiting other players willing to sell them at the same time. I don’t see any stupidity in that.
