Taking Grind to a whole new Level

Don´t punch me with a dictionary please, but in my perception something that is monotonous is an event, an action or a move that you do over and over again.
A monotonous action is for example to put barbie dolls into boxes. It is so monotonous that it is done by robots, who would surely be frustrated too if they could.

So a raid is not monotonous if you do it one time. Maybe it is not monotonous if you do it 10 times. But it surely will get monotonous if you do it for the 50th time. As raids require practice to succeed they are bound to become monotonous, especially if you hit a brick wall for a longer time.
If it engaging or not makes no real difference. Try listening to Beethovens 9th symphony for 10 hours straight and you will find it monotonous to listen it again the next day, despite it being an acclaimed masterpiece.
And I have to agree with Ohoni on the idea that engaging is really subjective and can quickly turn into frustration after some attempts. I already know that I will be frustrated with raids very quickly, but Anet leaves me no choice if I want a versatile armor.

You took the Wikipedia article out of its context. Original Grinding was not just repetitive tasks, it was singular, you did one thing all the time for what you wanted to get. There were no alternatives, no different other methods, no flexibility other than kill this particularly named mob for a very rare drop for hours or take this item and walk with a speed debuff for 15 minutes to the repeatable quest turn-in vendor.

The absolute worst part of Grinding was that it was monotonous and not-engaging. There was ZERO enjoyment in it, but if you wanted something special or worse, something REQUIRED for other content in the game, you HAD TO DO IT.

So, like raiding?

Nope. Raiding engages you always.

Fortunately for me there are enough fun things to do in GW2 that I can ignore the ones that aren’t.

So, just like I did with old legendaries, I look at the requirements for HOT legendaries and simply say, “nope.”

I won’t have legendaries, because the grind to get them is not what I consider fun. But I’m OK with that, and happy to let people who do want that sort of thing to have at it.

Although I am sorry to hear that you don’t like the path towards Legendaries, it is very refreshing to hear someone not complain since yes, there will be quite a lot of other content that can deliver fruitful rewards for those invested into it.

I sincerely hope there is plenty of worthy skins from HoT we can all appreciate and participate in.

So when you say things like GW2 is too grindy, I cannot understand. There are almost nil instances where you had to do one task to reach an objective in this MMO. Everything is nicely wrapped into different things, you progress at your own speed however you wish. And once again, there’s no pressure on you as a player to keep up with everyone else, there’s no true vertical progression where you will fall behind on if you skip a few weeks of the game. I can’t think of another MMO that has done such a good job on not letting players fall behind on content.

So no, this game isn’t a grind. If this game was a grind, Heart quests wouldn’t have many tasks to do, just one, and there would be more of them to split the hearts out, and there would be kill only quests, fetch this stick quests, etc. If this game was a grind, there would be much rarer drop rates than now with any kind of gear, Precursor drops would be almost mythical and certain precursors would ONLY have a chance to drop from very FEW mobs which would be camped everyday. Even with the shared loot system, getting a tag would be a hell of a challenge, oh and the mob would spawn every hour or so…

There is no Grind unless it repeats ONE task and the task is NOT-ENGAGING. If there are other ways to work on something, it is not a grind, its a goal.

You have zero idea what grinding is.

The majority of the players don’t know what it is.

If we’re talking about an unnecessary grind how about people like me that meticulously did world completion to level a class that felt awkward only to look forward to more grind to unlock the elite spec you were shooting for because you will only have half of the class you want to play made available; I didn’t want to play half a Reaper this Friday I wanted to play as a full Reaper.

I want to be 20 years younger and twice as rich, but we don’t always get what we want. You can unlock the greatsword with 60 points. That’s the start of the reaper. Hell I’ll have the track half done by the time the game launches, because I have over 200 hero points ready to go on my necro.

Since you don’t know now how much more you’d need to get all the skills and traits, you’re at the very least complaining prematurely.

Now I’m hoping that I find an exploit, so I can compose a limerick about it.

there was a farmer in orr
who had a goldmine galore
he exploitet the beasts
but was caught at least
his body soon washed ashore

There’s always a failtrain in Cursed Shore
Farming Jofast galore
They kill all the champs
Then fail the camps
And exploit the reset timer for evermore…..

Ahh my fist Limerick.. this is easier than shelling peas

No. How does buying your way through a game make it interesting at all?

The game might as well play itself if everything has to be bought or served with an easy button.

No matter what time they release it will not be a good time for some player in world. Should be glad arena net will probably be up all night their time work on patch after release. Think of how they feel be up all night so you get less bug when you get home from work to play.

If you have work/school then I’d say that release time is great for eu players, since most likely there will be problems at start (“Never play on release/patch day”). When you get home you hopefully get to play somewhat fixed game.

yes pls. i’d even drop 20-30 bucks for that.

No, the gem store only offers cosmetics and convenience items. Changing that would change the game and not in a good way.

if exp boost is a convenience, how is a masteries unlock not? it only cuts the time. i’ve been told by everyone on this forum for the last 3 years that this is not pay to win whenever i brought it up.

sigh

Why do you bother playing if you just want to purchase your way to the end? You miss everything.

So..no.

what you miss is tons of pointless grind that has no substance to it. for me this game begins at the moment that everything is unlocked and i can start playing at full efficiency. everything before that is a chore.

Yes… because absolutely nothing is happening around you as you make your way to that HPC. Gotcha…

i’d rather experience that with my masteries unlocked. not everybody enjoys your particular play style.

Yes, I’m well aware that not everyone enjoys playing the game that they purchased to play. They just expect everything to be handed to them right at the start. Specs. Masteries. Legendaries. And then they kitten that they have nothing to do.

Go figure.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

buying the 400 hero points with gems

first idea i had after reading elite spec will cost 400 hero points,
is to let me buy them with gems (aka real money after buying gems)

or maybe put the elite spec unlock on TP

what do you think ?

Did you ever wonder why we have that many currencies in this game? And why there is a new currency each time there’s a new event?
It’s so all participating have the “same” prerequisite, with veterans having advantages from time to time, but they’re never able to just skip that event and get to the goal at once.
The same is what happens here and why you still have to get ~200 HP to get your elite.
So maybe this “grind” has a reason, although it would be nice if there was a solution for pvp and wvw players, I agree.

Edit: Typos and stuff.

Ranatoa brings up a great point: an addition like this would make it pay to win. Considering the huge backlash that something as simple as the Watchwork Mining Pick go (getting labelled as P2W), this would be even worse.

Moreover, why would you want to pay to skip part of the journey behind getting Elite Spec? It’s meant to be difficult/time consuming. If you really want the elite spec, it will mean you’re more invested in the game rather than unlocking it instantly- A-net want that, it means people are more likely to play for longer trying to unlock all of their favourite elite specs.

Surely the allure would be far smaller if you got the elite spec without any effort?

How to summarise the HoT mood

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Akachi.1352

Akachi.1352

Well this mood for HoT is definitely different to what I expected. From what I’ve seen so far you have a few camps:

1. “Errrmaaaguuurd I have to play the game to unlock stuff!?!?”

Did you seriously think buying the expansion would automatically unlock everything for you? If this was the case, you would be back on the forums within an hour of launch saying that HoT was a waste of money.

2. “I assumed all this stuff and now I’m annoyed none of it is true”

Well you know what they say about assuming…..it makes an kitten out of u and me. You’ve only got yourself to blame.

3. “400HP is too high! I demand less!”

They’re called ELITE SPECIALIZATIONS for a reason, not every Tom, kitten and Harry has them. Just look at all those thousands of Lamborghini’s you see everyday……oh yeah you don’t, and that’s why they are considered high end vehicles. Not an exact comparison but close enough for you to get the idea.

4. “I want a refund because XXXXX is not available at launch”

Wouldn’t you rather everything was tested than buggy beyond belief so that you couldn’t complete it? If it was release with a load of bugs you would complain that they didn’t take long enough testing it ask, and say you want a refund for not getting what was promised.

At the end of the day Guild Wars 2 wasn’t exactly a challenging game/never required a long period of effort put into it, so stop complaining that areas of the game are the opposite of that now. If HoT was made easy you would ask be here in 24hrs complaining about that too.

I for one welcome the challenge for getting elite specializations across 13 characters, forging the new legendaries and prepping for raids.

Congratulations CoJo and pals for making a game that challenge the best of is and not just be completed in 3hrs! Hopefully Guild Wars 2: Cogs of War (GW2: CoW) will be just as challenging

We talk here about 7.50€ (or about 126g to buy), that’s one beer where I live, in other countries maybe two. But really, don’t you have other priorities?

Where I live, for €7,50- a homeless person can sleep 3 or 4 days in a shelter on cold winter nights…

Man what a comment… -.-

You can’t compare that. We’re talking about persons who can afford to buy a computer, the game and pay their electricity bill. That has nothing to do with “look at me I’m so rich”.

I do love ready through threads like this, with people expecting ANet to be able to do it with ease. Not to mention people don’t want to work for anything anymore. Just want it handed to them.

You say People who have done 100% Map Completion like 5 times don’t want to work for anything? Are you serious? How often have you done it? Sob off with that old man MMO player attitude. By the way it would be easy, Beta Characters had full Map Completion except for hearts. Your point again?

So it’s stopping you from leveling alts, that’s your problem, and yours alone. You don’t want to do it, but you want all the benefits that come with it. Again your problem.

Of course it’s my problem, not yours. So? You think only your problems and views matter?

There are lots of things I don’t want to do in this game. But I do them as that is how it’s designed to work. At the end of the day there will always be something we as players don’t like, but you can’t make everyone happy.

Well you are aware that designs can change, especially when they become obsolete for veteran players. And you can kitten well try to make everyone happy.

Sure people don’t want the rewards now, but what about down the line, ANet could add something that might require map completion. Then we’ll get QQ ANet I need my map completion back, QQ.

Why would they add something to an old, obsolete aspect of the Game? Also if it’s an optional unlock on character by character basis, the QQ aspect is eliminated. Easy.

You are comparing a Beta character, one that is designed to test things with a normal account? Yeah because they must be the same right? Sure they are………

Nothing about the core game is obsolete, you will need all hero points in the core game as well as the ones from HoT to get the elites. ANet are good at making things matter, they want every map busy. Why do you think they did the whole mega server thing? So every map would be busy.

As for how many have I don’t it with? Seven, and I’ll be doing it again with my rev.

But hay, lets ask ANet to make the game easier, then complain about how easy it is.in the next breath right?

I work full time and can only play 2-3 hours a night.

30 minutes of map comp, rest of the time spent in fractals (or doing whatever it is you like doing in this game.) I’ve done map completion 10 times with this schedule, despite the fact that I hate map completion with a burning passion. Nut up and get it done or live without it.

Honest question: why do you guys argue about/discuss changes like this, that any rational person can surmise will never, ever happen….ever?

It doesn’t matter what you like to do. Because you enjoy it, everyone has to? No. It could be optional and you’d not have to do it, others could if they want, done. You can not counter this with any argument, period.

And how do you know it won’t ever happen, are you the CEO of ArenaNet?

I…don’t….um…..what?

Did you even read what I wrote? I HATE map comp. Despise it. Yet I do it for world completion to make legendaries and have easy access to vendors and WPs and other things. I’m not doing it because I enjoy it. I do it because I feel it’s necessary for the way I play the game. If map completion is so vital to you, shut up and get it done, or do the bare minimum you need to get by.

I already said I don’t need the gift. I am willing to opt out of the gift, the star, everything. Heck, I just want the option to unlock all waypoints.

Problem with that is that anet listens to this.
At first we had threads “remove wvw map completion” now “remove map completion” – you will get it eventually if you whine long enough.
Personally I think it’s dumbing down the game even more, but maybe that’s just me.

I want this because I find it incredibly boring to repeat map clears on each character, just for the sake of having each character show 100% map complete. I have multiple characters who have different maps cleared. Its not like I haven’t actually completed those maps….its just on different characters. That’s literally the one thing that is causing me not to have map complete….

Then don’t do it – this game works without 100% map completion.

If you’re not an explorer, why do you need the maps open in the first place? What need to you have to have the maps opened up?

If you’re going to a zone with a friend to do something…use a teleport to friend. Or just run there once and OH look you have the waypoint now.

Maybe give the WvW hero point unlock thing another option to unlock waypoints in PvE too. Then you can WvW and get your waypoints open that way. If you’re a PvE player, just walk there once and you have it.

Why? Guild missions, dungeons, world bosses and events to name the 4x that jump into my brain immediately.

I think teleport to a friend costs real life money right? It’s a gems tore purchase? No ty.
EDIT: Though if they gave mesmers a port to their location while not in pvp or wvw then Ill be happy with that

I have tons of teleport to friend and never bought any (3rd birthday gift & from Black Lion Chests- keys from drops/story)

Still I don’t see the problem about running to a zone. It doesn’t take long and you can use the xp to help level the character or level masteries. If they did a waypoint unlock thing it’d have to be completely optional and a gold sink.

And guild tags! And also pet names while we’re at it.

Unfortunately those are not exactly defined. For example, I usually sport a LGBT tag … which would be a HUGE no-no in some countries (I read one international person complaining that the transgendered NPC was offending his country’s & religion’s mores so she had to go to avoid him seeing her). There is also the problem that a perfectly innocent word in one language may be not so in another.

Not to point fingers, but if I have to I will, I have noticed (as have many others I’ve spoken too) a noticable increase in snarky, elitist, negative Map chat from what appears to be F2P and new players. Many of these players have generally worn their experience in their previous game (the big MMO that us GW2 players ran screaming from) on their sleeve like we should bow down and be impressed. If you need to keep an eye on the community, it is these new people that have come into the game with the expectation that a game without a holy trinity stinks, and without 10 levels of gear to grind for it must be a waste of their time.

Sorry for the mini rant, but the reason I’ve stayed with this game since launch is the community. PLEASE keep an eye on the droves of refugees from that other game that are bringing their negative baggage with them. Thanks!!

None of them are f2p. f2p guys can not use map chat. Those are all legit new accounts that will lose fifty bucks if they get banned.
