Really dont get the hate for torch #5 in this thread. Cone aoe damage, cond removal on allies and now cond removal on us. I cant see why it SHOULD do any more damage at that point considering you can clear that many conditions with it an still do decent damage to groups.

I’m not the most avid PVPer but this change just tells me that if you want the cleansing needed in today’s PVP meta, you have to run Torch. That’s not so bad until you realize it’s a great effect coupled to a terrible weapon.

I’m having zero issues in LA — in fact I thought ele was one of the best professions to play, especially for the escort events. I’m coming from the perspective of staff.

It seems to me the new content in LA is designed to be anti-glass. The mobs live a bit too long and hit a bit faster which puts glassy toons at higher risk.

Part of me thinks that someone in ANet was thinking “hey, wanna see something funny? Watch this…”

The core elements that contribute to combat are amazing; things like movement-related CC, leaps and evasive dodge rolls, active dodge are what set this game apart from other MMOs.

Even so, poor balance and class design coupled with a lack of game-modes end up ruining an otherwise outstanding PvP scene.

the current maps are designed for 5 vs 5 arena tournament play and not really 8 vs 8 or 10 vs 10.

PvP MUST NOT BE kittening newbie friendly omg…and vahn just said conquest is not well suited for soloq (And he’s right cause without tactics, right comps and proper communication it’s just a russian roulette there). We need new modes for sure…but not easy kittening modes…this pvp is just dumb already stop making it more and more kittening casual friendly…it must be competitive not just letting anyone going in and win just because they’re running op specs/comps. Problem with gw2 is that i’m already worried about new game modes they would put into competitive side cause they would lead to more exploits and broken mechanics abuse…just take a look at spirit watch and the giant gap between classes while running orbs..

sPvP must be newbie friendly, so that more players can pick up sPvP and enjoy. thus, more healthier sPvP population.

do not forget that guild wars 2 is a game for casual players.

as for spirit watch, do accept the fact that some professions will be better at running the orb, that is all. by the way, playing the profession as intended is not abuse of broken mechanics but playing the game the right way.

Boo Hiss to 5v5 vs 8v8. That would be better for tournament play but for a hot join you want a bit of mindless slaughter and speed in getting dailies etc (especially if you just want to get back to wvw).

For a lot of people, pvp is a fun diversion and something you do with a little bit of extra time on your hands or during downtime. 5v5 creates really boring fights if you are not organized. Most hot joins are not organized.

For competitive pvp, I love basically group v group dynamics. But, it just won’t work on a hot join for the average bear.

The solution to this has been stated many times by many people. Anet should just do away entirely with the 8v8 format and make all hot joins 5v5. This would get rid of a lot of the mindless zerging as well as better prepare hot joiners for tournament play. Maybe then ppl will start to realize that if someone on their team is already standing on a point that also standing on it with them doesn’t make the point cap any faster.

nope. not everyone enjoys 5 vs 5 tournament game mode.
5 vs 5 is not casual PvP format.

also, there are much more casual sPvP players than competitive sPvP players.

After 10 and more years of online base capping multiplayers, people still don’t want to do it and rathers zerging mid and losing repeatedly the game.

I’m not complaining people wich need to learn.
I’m complaining those which can’t and don’t want to get better and keep on hindering his/her teammates.

This game is too much hard for some people, you can’t sell space shuttles to cavemen.

Mark my words, bookmark this thread for future reference. If Anet decides to due away with objective style pvp and implement deathmatches then mesmer and thief will dominate DM. Stealth would be king.

they just want to fight and kill people, not really care about capturing points or the team score.

Spirit watch is horrible argument imo. You don’t have to travel very far to get the points. I’m talking going into an enemy base getting the the kitten ed thing and marching across a field to score… y’know, capture the flag.

Build diversity would be great, running/ holding a flag are two completely diff. things. Defending a flag/ capturing are two completely diff things. Stop looking at this as if it were conquest where there is only one objective (standing on a circle longer than the other guy).

All this w/o taking into account geography. Something that A-net has actually done a great job with.

Capture the flag is much more dynamic than standing on a circle.

In every other mmo I have played I have always tried to win the objective. It was MONTHS ago when I got fed up and just decided to start farming because it was more gratifying.

PvP is quite stale in this game and it’s getting worse as the skill gap continues to narrow.

More than anything else – hotjoin is the reason this game died completely from a pvp perspective.

Hotjoin is miserable because there is no competitive element (winning or losing really doesnt rank you up faster and ranks are pointless anyway). It is also miserable for other reaons:

1, All games are unbalanced because people can drop in and out of teams which just makes it constantly an unfair match up.
2, You cant play with friends – really its 2013 – the whole world is based around connecting with people and your friends. But in GW2 – a mmo which is a genre based on player interaction – you cant play with your friends? That is ridiculous
3, It divides the player base – obvious and means everything just dies.

The point of pvp is competition. Hotjoin killed that. It was billed as a COD type system. But in reality it works different to that because people in CoD stay to the end way more often for reasons that should of been obvious to anet. Also a game briefly being 4v5 in cod doesnt matter because you can easily win 1v5 in cod if you are good enough. In an mmo that is impossible. Also cod has a huge player base of players who can then fill any spot which opens up.

Honestly, I hate to say it but the devs killed this game. Their design decisions didn’t work. That is a fact. And rather than reverse it, they dragged their feet and refused to admit that this game had utterly failed. Look at how long they resisted new game modes. Same with hotjoin. Same with much of their balance work. But balance is a minor problem, the biggest problems are much bigger than balance. And that is why its expansion or bust for pvp in this game. The pvp will never be born again (its currently totally and utterly dead) until an expansion.

My last two matches in team queue…

First, a 3v5.
Second, a game we lost because nobody would lead the party or follow my efforts to lead, preferring to all run in circles like headless chickens.

That’s what happens in team queue when you’re a solo player.

My current solo queue win percentage is around 48%. Team queue, around 28%. So no, it’s not me.

Because I just did, and we lost 500-40. And when it was over, these were the ranks of the players.

Their team: 40 – 40 – 49 – 47 – 48. Average, around 45.
Ours: 40 – 12 – 22 – 1 – 1. Average, around 15.

This is during prime playing time on a weekend in the US.

Because as kittenolo queue is, I have more of a chance at a fair fight. Going to the team queue as an individual means a high chance of being slaughtered by an organized team.

If I had a team, I’d use the team queue. But nobody wants to make teams with newer players.

lots of design fails, basically, eg:

  • no resource system (rewards spamming, simplified combat)
  • shallow build system (fixed weapon skills, huge trait & skill imbalances, strongly linked systems, general lack of choice)
  • single, uninteresting pvp mode
  • downed state (not fun, numerous problems/imbalances)
  • AOE cap of 5 (rewards zerging)
  • slloooooowwww balancing (which turned out to be whack-a-mole anyway)
  • excessive particle effects (game looks like a mess to casual observers)
  • huge level of divergence from previous game
  • unwillingness to incorporate feedback, generally contemptuous attitude to players

Considering their track record so far, and that these triple A pvp devs didnt even have the foresight to percieve any problems with tiny Asura models during years of development, i’d say any attempt at producing an enjoyable and watchable E-sport match/game comes from either lack of perception or the perception that this is as shiny as the kitten gets for a long time.

There is no real reason to focus that much on e-sport and cash tournament when the game is clearly broken and people are not interested/involved into.

Get real, PAX regional Finals had 4k viewers at best over a pool of 3 million GW2 buyers at least. I think it is time for ANet to check their priorities.

People is not involved in Spvp at all for several reasons,

a) Want to play Solo Tournies? Get eady to be frustrated the matchmaking sucks balls hard, game can be either easy or imposible,

b) Want to play in hot joins? Wellcome to the mini version of WvW,

c) Want to play tournaments with 1 or 2 friends? Get ready to be paired against 5 guys in the same guild, and probably this people who spend a lot of time in Spvp,

d) Balance? What’s that?

e) Guardians running in circles and facerolling the keyboard,

e) Balance?

f) No game modes besides holding points,

Seriously, Spvp in this game is by FAR the worst and less popular part of the game and Anet balance the game towards this,

Don’t talk to me about toughness and vitality, damage avoidance is all in this game

i would like to see arenanet stop this fokus on Esport and start more fokus on bringing more casual/normal players in spvp to make a healthy playerbase – atm even leaderboards are a joke^^

bring something like Alterac valley (not 40v40^^) or Warsong from wow with archievements + rewards like title or minipets for the meta archievement and there will come alot normal players in spvp

this dont have to be competive or whatever – its a game give the playerz something to have “fun” ^^

and i dont understand why not even trie team deathmatch with a lil small arena in 2v2 mode or 3v3
when ppl play it and have fun – fine
when not who cares? It can be even like a minigame or “Activity” for pvp ppl same as the pve parts

or can be a duelroom everyone asks for – rightclick someone in mists or openworld and ask for duel when click yes get beamed in this arena with him and fight^^ (both pvp gear from mists when asked in mists and pve gear in openworld when asked there)

simple – another thing ppl asked a year now for

bring something more for the normal playerz than maby you get viewers for your esport thingie when ppl are involved in the spvp part from this game – atm 99.99% from your playerbase ignore spvp and dont care for it and thats the reason why no viewers on twitch

For more than a year now (since Ascended gear first came out) the discussion over vertical vs. horizontal progression has been going back and forth among the player base both here on the forums and on varied sites devoted to GW2. Throughout these discussions there has been a great deal of conjecture from either side about what the game’s “vision” is, how GW2 has veered away from its pre-launch mission statement and what where the game is headed in the future. It would be seriously awesome to read here, from the game’s developers where we as a players can expect GW2 to go in the future. While I understand that the CDI isn’t intended to discuss what is currently in development, it shouldn’t be a problem to express to players what the game’s general direction is intended to be.

On launch GW2 offered something very different from what currently populates the MMO genre. It may have been a far step away from GW1, but it was also a far step away from most of what the industry offers as “the norm”. Gradually over time, and suddenly with the introduction of ascended gear that has changed. Please note that I am not attempting to state that ascended gear is impossible to earn by any measure, or that it is even particularly difficult, it is however sharply limiting in some of the things that were once GW2’s greatest strengths when contrasted with other MMOs.

  • Alts:
    Increasing the range of GW2’s gear ladder makes it harder for people to play multiple characters and sufficiently gear them out.
  • Build diversity:
    Where previously players had the flexibility to play different builds and gear sets in the different parts of the game (WvW, Open World, Dungeons/Fractals) now build diversity is much more sharply limited based not only on the gear one has to carry but the challenge of getting that gear. It is more costly for players to experiment with builds over time and dramatic class changes have a more negative impact on players due to invested time.
  • Value of old content:
    As the rewards systems of the game change and become more vertical, old content becomes (as in most other MMOs) much less rewarding. Dungeons officially offer nothing but gold and armor skins (that you have to waste transmutation stones on) at this point.

One of the standard arguments against the above is that the vertical progression is shallow and ultimately optional. “You don’t ‘need’ ascended gear” after all, but if it isn’t necessary, why is it around? Once stats start getting raised through gear grind either old content has to be made more difficult, or old content becomes trivial to run either of which seems a poor choice.

I could complain about ascended gear and vertical progression until I’m blue in the face, but in an attempt to be constructive a few suggestions:

  • Gear could have swappable stats (like legendaries)
    This would at very least place less confinement on horizontal progression by allowing players to try out differing builds without having the character defined purely by their gear.
  • Gear could cap out at ascended with things like infusions being account unlocks
    This might help to limit the impact on those with alts, while still offering the opportunity for vertical progression.

There will always be some new MMO to offer players the hottest new gear ladder, but I think the genre can and should offer more than that. An MMO shouldn’t have to be your life for players to be on an even scale.

Here’s a handy checklist.

Present at the fight, my server:
[ ]Had Arrowcarts
[ ]Had Ballistas
[ ]Had Cannons
[ ]Was hiding behind a wall and waypointed when the gate broke
[ ]Was killing a karma train with equal or greater numbers.
[ ]Was killing groups in open-field ‘estimating equal or more’ but in reality less numbers than your own.

If you checked any of the above, you probably shouldn’t be calling it a good fight.

Added an additional listing for reality. Applies to all servers, and every WvW guild.

Let me be clear about one thing. Magumma has a tremondous NA presence, quite capable of, if pulling it off right, fighting tooth and nail and decimating our NA. No question about it, but right now you guys are still in the mind-set of the gold league…where you had to effectively go large and tight to at least fight the atrociously stacked servers that lay wait up there.

I do not want to ask about how much…let’s say ‘moisturizer’ you needed to at least survive, but it has definitely changed Magumma as a whole. You guys are far different than before, in good and bad ways.

As far as I am concerned, making the ‘excuse’ of not fighting good fights is not quite as low as ‘OMG 2v1’ but fairly bad nevertheless. If anything, we could say ‘Well Magumma kind of sucked at going for objectives, like I have seen bronze league do better’ but us and you guys have known each other a long, long time.

4. There is no such thing as free lunch. You can’t just say I want x,y,z and Kaboom avadakabra and you have it.

Just so you know that phrase refers to opportunity cost not wish fulfillment. That is if some one offers you a free lunch (and you choose to accept it) you have to take time to go get it, and/or eat it all things that preclude you from doing something else with your time.

As for what the OP said no matter what way they try to justify it this is a gear treadmill. Even if the stat increase is minimal (and the slots open the room even more stats through infusions). No matter the case whether it be 1% better or 10% better this is a gearing treadmill.
