It shows me how Anet developers had most of the fun: they colored my coloring book, and gave me few choices. They changed what little variety of items they had for level 80’s, making the player a controlled puppet strictly directed to small areas to acquire items and gold. Then they left me with nothing to buy with my gold.
The game could be alot of fun if more sandbox, player controlled content is added: such as open world consensual pvp/guild battles, non-instanced customizable housing/guild housing, and fun, meaningful profitable crafting. My cook does not even have a stove, nor my blacksmith a forge. A game that at least has the most popular features will be very successful

Because these ranks offer skills, they pretty much have to be character bound. I mean think about it.
Do you level your necro to get skills for your warrior? Do you level your guardian to get skills for your thief? Of course not.
Once skills were part of the package, it’s not unlike any other type of character progression.
Not really, the last game I played was Rift that has a level cap progression system where you gain small stat increments and skills, initially that was character bound, but guess what, it put people off from playing alts, so eventually, they changed it so the points were account bound.
And that is in a very traditional grindy game like Rift, that GW2 the “new, non-grindy MMORPG” is going to be more grindy than the likes of Rift, is just well…
You will also note, as soon as it would be an advantage to have things character bound, they decide to make them account bound, e.g – your daily.
Before this game was released, everyone thought it would be great for alts, the reality is in several ways it is worse for alts than many other MMORPGs.
(edited by Sylosi.6503)
I’m sorry, but all I’m hearing from the selfish character bound crowd is me me me me me. Seriously, whether I play just one character like the devs want or if its account bound you should face the same skill/rank level as the people who put the same time in. How does this affect you if I’m on my alt with my bonuses? It doesn’t, the only thing it messes with is your selfish egos. WvW is a reward for most people and now you are going to make it a chore just to keep up. That’s right though, you character bound advocates want less competition anyways.
WvW Rank/Skills should show peoples total dedication to WvW, how is my dedication really shown if I hold a novice title and skills because I’m spread out amongst other characters.
Player 1 levels a character to level 80 in 80 hours.
Player 2 levels 2 characters to level 40 each in 80 hours.
Players 2 “why no me have both characters at max level like player 1. Me play just as long!!!!” /rage
Me: lol
The difference is that we are talking about rank and title in WvW. People who play alternate characters do it to help the guild/server. As mentioned in the OP, WvW is about player skill and not just character skill. That’s why most people, majority of alts and selfless people believe this should be account bound.
account bound = player skill
Not sure how you get the equation account bound equal’s player skill. There are plenty of account bound achievements that take no skill at all.
And I don’t believe that everyone who plays alternate characters does it to help the guild/server. I play alternate characters, because I have fun playing alternate characters. A lot of people are altoholics and play them because it’s fun for them. There are, if you haven’t noticed, an awful lot of altoholics out there. They’re not all selfless.
I think this is a case of your projecting what you do (commendable as it is) on the masses, who just play to have fun.
In many of the upper tiers in WvW organization and the correct profession composition really matters. Here are some examples:
-Mesmers for veil/portal/timewarp. A skilled mesmer will already have a safety portal for Golems without being asked. If their doing that they aren’t getting badges and WXP. So they already suffer.
-Frontliners (Guardians/Warriors): They are not just warm bodies. If the group is really struggling through choked the can give that needed protection and CC. EMP and other guilds have done GvG and it can really explain why fights are one just based on class composition.
-Elementalists: Their ability to rain down on siege and for their party swords are incredibly effective against doors.
-Thieves are also effective (their AoE stealth with be more effective next patch) with cloaking Golems to the target.
-Rangers are ok, but their pets are great for taking people out on siege.
-Engineers are great for taking over supply camps because of their solo abilitiesSo people aren’t just warm bodies whether they are ikittenerg or not. An Engineer is a poor choice if running with a zerg. Flamethrower will get you killed, Grenades are useless if your taking a tower with a smart leader (cats/treb vs. rams). Boon Spike Engineer maybe.
I really encourage people to watch EMP and other guilds GvG. It will provide those that don’t understand group composition.
Bigger Zerg and better coverage wins.
Stop making it out like group composition is so important.
Every Zerg has plenty of every class
Actually it does play a huge success. That’s why EMP and other great guilds wipe double their numbers. EMP and AEG (can’t remember, but they are from blackgate) were doing a GvG and even though they were killing each other managed to wipe a 50 man SoR zerg that crashed the GvG because the SoR was full of junk builds and not a top-notch line-up of professions. EMP excluded Engineers and Rangers completely and only had 1 thief because they just don’t do enough in a large groups.
You seem like a hack for SoR who either cheats or trolls.

Well let me ask you this: Why do you want with that max gear? What will you do once you have it? What will it help you achieve, that you cannot do right now?
- People want max level gear because it increases their success at everything they do. You might as well ask why get a high-speed internet connection if slower connection can retrieve all the same info. Effectiveness is the reason.
Makes me wish there was a way to get max gear without waiting for weeks and weeks for the raid to res……i mean for the laurels and commendations.
Well, Gold buys you crafting mats, crafting mats buy you gear and level ups, level ups buy you traits and skills.
So, gold = skills already
On other maps an ele is obviously the best class. However on spirit watch it is game breaking in how OP it is. The way they can carry orbs is absurd. It really isnt much fun when you know as soon as an ele gets the orb its basically a goal already. RTL not being effected at all is just depressingly annoying. How is this not fixed?
Spirit watch is great but the patch needs to address these imbalances in the map which make the map feel very lame as 3 eles is probably the best spec (at least 2).
My solution:
- Make rtl effected by the speed deduction by reducing its ranger to 40% of what it should be.
- Or just make rtl drop the orb
Mist form with the orb isnt really a problem imo.
Is rtl with the orb going to be fixed with the patch? it needs to be. Or please dont include spirit watch in the rotation again.

Would you guys like to see some kind of pvp set that required a certain rank in the ladders? Just like wow did with the pvp shoulders. In wow, you need a quite high rating (2200) to be able to wear them. They are also supposed to be the best looking sets, so it’s a nice way to show your epe`nis.
I think it would add a meaning to the gear you have. Right now, gear = nolife.
It should be relatively easy to implement too. As far as i know there are many pve sets that dont have a pvp equivalent.
Your thoughts?
(edited by Rerroll.9083)
Or would you just kind of flail around helplessly when on land?
Karp! Karp! Magikarp!
I think that’d be a great idea.
Bank vault, unfortunately, cannot hold account or soulbound items.
I don’t see the sense why the titles or the skills earned are character bound. PvP levels are account bound :/
Double-tap is a terrible way to dodge…. but honestly… if you aren’t using a key or a mouse button to do so, i don’t blame you for not dodging at all.
Going back to double-tap after using mouse button 4 or 5 would be terrible.
You know, this might make for a great episode of The Guild, considering they have only six members. What would they do if The Game introduced content like this? Felicia Day, are you out there?
lol yea…merge with some giant mega-guild…lose all sense of self…drama ensues…and they all realize that it’s just not fun.
The mistake you made here, ArenaNet, is you tied this new guild content to tier gear. If you hadn’t, I think the complaints would be far fewer.
Wake up. Read my lips. No new Ascended Gear.
It’s jacked your game into something you didn’t intend, and your players hate it.
Just to open what I expect will be a contraversial Topic.
I mention this as the emphasis of so many comments seems to
relie upon an expectation and understanding that guild wars the game is an
essentually PvP thing.
Lets consider.
the land mass, vegitation animal types dedicated to PvE vs PvP 5 to 1 say.
Armour types avalible PvE loads, drop craft dungeon racial PvP ……
detailed art work PvE shed loads PvP bland
number of events PvE lots and different scales PvP small number and simple
cities 5 in PvE complex many NPC toons with story actions
none PvP 3 or 4 simple castles really out lines , placed in reflections 2/3 toons
seasonal PvE has PvP hasnt
with each of the above and many many more examples
Dungeons jumping puzzles heart tasks cathedral dragon events crafting blah blah blah
you can see that the scale, complexity, detail is much much more in PvE
Anet has spent money and staff time creating this. why both with making
a complex PvE world so much more than PvP if it means nothing ?
not a part of the game
at a wild guess they have dedicated 70 % plus of their budget to PvE and used the elements created for PvE to roll out and populate the PvP aspect.
there is no doubt that PvP game design has many difficult challanges.
the AI for the few toons in WvW will not have been an easy task.
game balance…. oh and a set of armour
but 70% or more on PvE and then ignore it all ( v conservative estimate )
sadly the PvE part is badly Broken and getting worse with each fix.
BUT
to call this a PvP game ( which i admit it may well end up being )
is to have your eyes closed.
If i was a person who funded the game development and found that they had spent the vast majority of my money (their budget) on a redundant beautiful gothic excess called PvE
that had no part in the GAME was useless
(and that at the moment it is driving players ( customers )
away frustrated , annoyed , disappointed and bored
and with them my profits )
I would be upset. Very Upset.
so PvP yes but only in part
you can of course choose to play only that bit.
I hope and pray we all enjoy all the game
or that bit which is good and fun for you.
PvP or PvE or Both.
It is quite obvious that PvE was the priority when this game was in development. They will of coruse improve PvP more and more as the game progresses, but I agree that Guild wars 2 is a PvE game at its current state. WvW is kind of a mix of PvE/PvP so I can’t include that in there. But there’s a reason that sPvP isn’t very active compared to the rest of the game.
Here’s the idea I have in mind.
Each event should have some sort of counter that keeps track of the last time the event was finished successfully, if it was even attempted. The counter adds one stack to its reward multiplier over every 12 hour cycle from the last time it has been started and there were failed attempts, and adds two stacks if there were no attempts at all. Here is an example:
Formula for reward multiplier: 12 hour cycles since last successful event + ( cycles event has been unattended * 2) + (failed attempts/2). Rounds down and has a maximum of 50.
Krait Witch event: The event begins and there is 1 failed attempt to complete it in a 24 hour period.
1 + ( 1 * 2) + (1/2) = 3.5
This event gains 3 stacks to its reward multiplier.
Temple of Balthazar: The event chain begins and there are 6 failed attempts to retake the temple over a 72 hour period.
6 + ( 0 * 2) + (6/2) = 9
This event gains 9 stacks to its reward multiplier.
Temple of Dwayna: The event chain has not been attempted in a one week period.
14 + ( 14 * 2) + (0/2) = 42
This event gains 42 stacks to its reward multiplier.
For each stack, a specific formula calculates the XP/Karma/Silver gains. I haven’t determined it yet but they should be in accordance to the following:
XP: Logistic. Should award ~200k XP max at level 80 with the highest possible multiplier. If not level 80, event should give around 75-80% of a level at max multiplier.
Karma: Quadratic. Rewards increase more the longer the event is not attempted. Should give ~4500 max for an event with the highest multiplier.
Silver: Quadratic. Rewards increase more the longer the event is not attempted. Should give ~50s max for an event with the highest multiplier.
Read: Playing to Win.
Guide: How to play a Mesmer in dungeons.
People go for the easiest loot, period. So if you put more loot somewhere that’s better it will not longer be an unpopular event. This is what happened with the big world events. People didn’t camp them that much until they were guaranteed a gold. Suddenly there’s lag, there’s overflow servers, there’s all sorts of stuff.
If you buff the rewards on everything few people are doing, you’ll throw the entire economy out of whack with inflation. If you change where the big rewards are, people will just start doing the new stuff.
I agree with the OP in principle, but unfortunately human nature makes this very hard.
Each time an event is done the bonuses would diminish. So the most profitable way to do events would be to do tons of them all over the place.
Which gives another great idea. What if waypoint costs flucuated based off of use? So waypoints that never get used would be cheap and popular ones would be expensive. This would even work as a great indicator as to which areas DEs are likely to give the best rewards.
This is also a really great idea, with the waypoints scaling with price. I’m glad you mentioned it.

You get legendaries through money, not merit
You get commander titles through money, not merit
Everything worth having in this game is bought with money, and not earned… This issue isn’t going to be fixed, so get used to it
I’m still not happy that there is no last online feature.
I’m still not happy that there will be Ascended crap.
What happened to the other threads on these wvw topics?
They seem to have been deleted en masse …..
As I stated in those, these character bound achievements are the worst idea in a bunch of bad ideas brought into the game recently- far from promoting variety, it feels more and more like being shoved into a pigeonhole.
You know what sets facebook apart from this idea…
No VIP. It’s Open to Everyone. You should learn something from that method.
Nope. I bought GW1 specifically because of the “no monthly fee” and would never have crossed over to GW2 if it had a monthly fee.
i wouldve canceled a while ago.
I would have never started playing and even if I did I would have stopped by the end of october, when I took a break from GW2. I never came back to a P2P MMO before, only F2P games have that low entry barrier to allow for that.
Tbh, the question is wrong for my case. If Gw2 had a fee I would have never started to play it. I don’t like subscription based games, I don’t want to be bound to a contract to play. So if Gw2 became subsription based my decision to continue playing would not depend on a lack of content because I think there is none.
I still want to be able to get the cliffside fractal hammer, seems some of the coolest items in game aren’t available to players
[FIRE] Serene Snow, Warrior
Really poor decision by someone at Arenanet. However, I will continue to play on all my characters. They will just progress slower than the person that plays on the same character. I like variety in my game.
As much as I’d like to think myself of the same mood, I can see myself quickly shelving my alts since any time on them would feel like time away from my main character. I wouldn’t care much about titles and all of that, but any current or new currencies for any current or future stat progression would pretty much settle the matter.
Honestly I don’t care at all about WvW rank. I think most WvW players want is actual progression instead of all this fluff. Personally I think there should be ways to get Ascended gear with badges. Honestly many people in WvW stuck it out this long with hopes of this. Another path ANET should have taken is actually rewarding the top servers/winning servers with even better loot while in WvW. Yes it got much better, but compared to PvE its still lacking. One idea that I really would like is if guilds could earn guild tokens and the guild leader could assign them out in a max of two a week per person to the guildies working the hardest….probably would actually see people dedicated to defense because they knew their guild leader appreciates it. That progression would have been much better.
So many ideas.
