Why not use F2-F4 for minions?

Because that is how Ranger’s pets work, and intruding on that leads to homogenization between the professions. If they just fixed AI and made the system slightly better, that’s all we really need on the control side of things.

Liadri thoughts and suggestions

in Festival of the Four Winds

Well, I finally beat Liadri.

After more than 200 tries, I finally beat her. Yeps, you read that right – 200 tries. I tried different builds, different classes, but I eventually got her on my thief.

I think 200 tries gives me something of a special perspective on her, so I wanted to post some suggestions and thoughts about Liadri and the Gaunlet.

First, where’s the lore? A boss this mean needs more backstory. I’d actually like to see all the Gaunlet bosses in the Living Story.

I like this kind of fight. It’s not an easy fight, in my opinion, but it can be learned. I had a real feeling of accomplishment at the end of it. Thanks for that, ArenaNet.

However, there are a number of issues with the fight. (I’ll try to keep this short. After 200 fights, I think I could write a dissertation on this.):

- The mechanism for picking up the orbs and tossing them is very clumsy, so it feels a bit gimmicky, since it seems specifically designed to get you killed.

- Some arenas are better than others. This can be a serious disadvantage. In one arena, for instance, the second swirling pool spawns right against the wall.

- The Gaunlet needs its own instance away from the Boss Blitz. Lag kills. One arena gets danger circles from one of the Blitz bosses. Also, in some cases you might tab target to an enemy below the arena (Much less of an issue once you learn to target Liadri at the beginning of the fight.).

- Even with Free Camera, the camera still will zoom on you if you’re against the wall and the camera is positioned behind you.

While all classes seem to be able to do this fight, I would say it does seem to favor warriors and maybe guardians. I had to add toughness to get through this. How ’bout a fight that seems to favor clothies, for once?

Also, I think this fight stressed the limits of my current system. I have a 3 year old rig. It was better than average when I bought it, but it’s on the low end, at best, now. My crappy DSL doesn’t help either.

In this fight, timing is critical, especially in phase one. You’ll realize soon enough if you have skill lag or equipment lag. You’ll know if you have a crappy net connection or your frame rate sucks or your gear blows. My keyboard seems to blow. So, umm, thank you, ArenaNet for making me realize my rig sucks, I guess.

Thanks for the mini. It’s awesome. I’m still a bit on the fence about this, though. It’s great to have a fight that you can learn and tests the limits of your skill, but I spent the last month working SOLO on this fight. Not exactly in the spirit of MMOs. It seems a bit off to award such a special mini when there’s nothing equivalent in the MMO parts of the game. Is there a special mini for PvP teams? A special mini of crack dungeon crews?

Finally, thanks for making such an awesome game, ArenaNet.

Guild Wars 2: A Realm Reborn

Whilst GW2 never had the disastrous launch that FF14 had, nevertheless it was a disappointment to many people and never lived up to its true potential, nor the legacy of the first Guild Wars.

The shame of it is, GW2 is not a terrible game, which means there’s little incentive to fix the very serious and fundamental problems the game has. FF14 was a total wreck, and that was enough to force Square to bow their heads and remake it into FF14:ARR. Sure, you may or may not like the type of game FF14:ARR is, (I don’t, really) but from everything I’ve heard, it’s fulfilled its potential and the people that like that kind of thing really think it’s a great game.

Now that we have “Living World Season 2” coming, it’s maybe a good time to think about an expansion pack or reboot, that really FIXES the problems that have been there from day 1.

Sure, you might care about these things less or more or not at all, but I’m pretty sure everyone agree that “There’s room for improvement here.”

- Combat needs an overhaul.
Currently GW2 is an unhappy hybrid between action games and MMOs.

On the action side, the mechanics are too shallow, and there isn’t a proper risk/reward system in place. Even something as simple as “Powerful attacks and defensive skills use endurance too”, would mean that you have to make the difficult choice between using your endurance on offense, or saving it for dodging/defense. Rather than just hitting every skill on cooldown 90% of the time.
Also, too many of the traits are passive, minor and invisible. It would be much better if (like Diablo 3), choosing traits produced visible and game-changing alterations to how some of your skills worked. (eg. The elementalist trait Evasive Arcana is a good one.)

On the MMO side, there isn’t much depth in the way players cooperate in battle at the moment. Support skills are usually PBAoEs, that encourage everyone to stack on a single point (which is silly on many levels) and there aren’t any meaningful Roles.
ANet needs to rework a lot of the skills and traits so that they have strengths and weaknesses that depend/interact with your team. For example, give each class some support skills (ie. skills that heal/benefit others) that are very strong, but have a casting time that is interrupted by any attack. Then add more skills to every class that can knockdown/knockback the enemy and create projectile shields.
So, without pigeonholing any class to a role, we can allow players to build defensive and supporting roles, in addition to the usual offense.

There’s a whole bunch of other stuff, but I’ll just list them quickly since it’s already a wall of text.
- Enemy AI also needs a lot of work.
- Some fundamental features are missing from PvP and WvW – Like observer mode, build templates, etc.
- The metagame mechanics of WvW is quite broken. When the best rewards come from karma trains rather than epic combat, your Epic Combat mode is not designed properly.
-The personal/living story system, and the story of the game, is not sustainable. Personally I think it would be much better if you weren’t Saving The World, and instead Personal Stories could be shorter episodes about your character, like “My quest to find my sister who was captured by a circus and the adventures I had along the way.” There’s a potential for a huge variety of such Personal Stories, whereas you can only really Save The World a couple of times before it gets really silly.

Anyways, time for a reboot.

I watched the videos myself. They’re not as bad as many people make them out to be. They provide a decent baseline comparison.

In part, Nemesis’ videos aren’t really made for the super elite, premade groups, but for the average or lone player. Because of this, the priorities are different, and what many people criticize his builds for in structure play are actually assets in unstructured play. The l33t hate him for this, but his builds and tactics are far superior to what the random pug runs.

That said, I hear the whole “necros have low DPS” thing all the time. Not on the forums, no, but in map and on the dungeons, people think warriors have maximum damage, and guards/eles are permitted only because of their utility. This leaves many classes (ranger, necro, engineer, thief, mesmer) on the chopping block as far as teams go. Players still can’t get past the idea that no, no class was designed to not do damage.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Creative. Full Berserker, never heard of it before. Is this a common build people use?
I’m pretty sure it is.

I think people need to stop comparing other professions to Warrior, or for that matter, being so concerned with whether or not they’re doing the ABSOLUTE POSITIVE SUPER BEST DPS EVER. If it gets the job done it gets the job done, you don’t need to be freaking superman. This whole concept does not impress me at all. It just shows me how insecure the community is.

Might be better to take this one to the Living Story forum.

But, in support I must say I’ve done gold runs on my 20-became-80 Mesmer. I threw everything I had at the boss until it came time to slow down, then resumed on burn command. No “11111spam” here, and I stayed upright longer than most on the boss, so I obviously contributed.

I’m right with you. When TTS does an organized run and asks the up-levels to go middle, I do as asked. I cooperate. But when you get people that start harassing others for being there, I get irritated.

I am so tired of hearing people complain, whine, berate, insult, try to command/demand up-levels to leave the Boss Blitz.

We have just as much right to be there as YOU do.

If ANet didn’t want anyone under 80 to participate, they would not have made it so we could get in and get up-leveled.

Please take your complaints to ANet and stop being kitten-pikes to other players.

Now if they are not cooperating in Gold Runs, I can understand you being upset and blacklisting or wanting them to leave. But otherwise, please just stop!

people organize gold runs with 80’s to farm the event as fast as possible to earn the most money/tokens/karma etc. they arent organizing the runs to level your uplevel. an uplevel is far less effective than any level 80, and you are taking advantage of every level 80 in that instance.

don’t get me wrong, i bring up levels in BB to level as well, but i don’t have the audacity to complain about the people that don’t want me there – because i understand that i am slowing their runs down and diminishing their hard word.

Take it to ANet. I bring my 80 there plenty of times and if an up-level is there, doing what is needed, then it’s just fine with me.

There was this old test we used to use back in the days of City of Hero; it is called the “Pylon test”. Basically you pick the toughest and hard-hitting target, bring your best build and see who can kill it the fastest. There was a table of best time on the forums back then. It is a combination of survivability and raw dps: too squishy, you die too soon before making any significant contribution; too tanky, you won’t do enough damage either.

It is a rather reliable test; in that game at least (mind you, in that game you could scale up the levels of the trash mobs quite significantly. So a well balanced between survivability and dps was needed). Perhaps we could do something similar in here too. Bring the best setup of each profession and have them face a similar target and see who can finish it the fastest.

We could modify the test for the best aoe as well: simply drag a fix number of mobs and see which aoe-centric build finish them the fastest.

I guess I was one of those people selfishly taking up platform space simply to beat Liadri. How dare I? There were a few times through the gauntlet that I wished the arenas were instanced simply so I didn’t have people watching me, but then I started actively talking to people and made some friends. We had fun, even though we selfishly used the platform for purposes other than farming, and some farmers even joined in, waiting in the queue and talking with us, giving us tips and pointers, cheering us on. It was great.

Maybe next time around they can put a “private gauntlet ticket” in the gemstore to smooth the farmers’ feathers

Jumping Puzzle on Elder Dragon Fight

in Living World

Posted by: Exosferatu.2961

Exosferatu.2961

I think Arena Net should include a medium difficulty jumping puzzle in the future Elder Dragon fights like Mordremoth. Which means… there has to be a phase where we have to ride on the Elder Dragon before it flies, and while it is flying we have to climb it and get to its head/wings/weak spot to attack it. When an elder dragon is barrel-rolling (slow because of its mass) we have to climb its sides to avoid falling off to death.

What do you think? Personally, I think Arena Net should pick up on this. Most raid/boss fights in MMORPGs require you to look at the telegraphed attack on the ground – always, so why not add something new, right?

Well those terrible players who have no idea how to properly play are doing just fine completing everything very easily and fast.

Anyway it’s the current system is obviously not bothering you but I do hope you understand where they are coming from. And not thats not just because they are all just bad players. However, if thats what you like to believe thats of course also fine.

“Very easily and fast”. Right.

They are coming from a game that they’re used to.

They want to make this game into the game they’re used to rather than play it for what it is. Even though there’s more players that would rather play GW2 for what it is than there are players who want to make it WoW 2.0 or whatever else variation on this theme they can come up with.

This happens in every game.

Some Call of Duty fans want to turn Battlefield into Call of Duty. There’s always going to be people that want to take an experience and make it more like what they want disregarding what others want.
It’s happened before and will happen again.

I wish it didn’t, but it does and will again.

Does anyone know if there’s any lore in game regarding probably THE main problem of being a Necro?

If you watch shows like Bones (my wife and I do, its a good show) then one of the things they go in depth about is the smell and overall gooeyness of dead humans.

I would have liked to see Necromancers in game perhaps have their own separate areas of each city, as perhaps a courtesy to others who don’t share their ability to ignore the physical downsides of their profession. Of course, it would have been nice for each profession to have an exclusive area, such as a Warrior’s Hall, a Mesmer’s Globe Theatre, an Engineer’s Workshop/Lab etc. where professions could congregate, but it seems that in the Necromancer’s case such would be almost necessary.

After all, can you imagine what a Charr Necromancer must smell like after years of summoning undead creatures? It would get into their fur and to be able to be around others within a hundred yards a Charr would have to shave itself pretty regularly.

I know that you want control the spam on the game but remeber that we don’t have a player to player trade system, so mail things is the only way that we have to share/exchange items. So please ANET can you increase the message filter to 4? so we can a least maill a item to all our team members.

Thanks.

So, i have been stocking up on mats needed to craft Frostfang for a while now. I thought to myself “i will slowly gather these and when i finally get enough gold to get the other parts needed, i will have most of the mats already, that will be fun!”.

Then when i was playing yesterday, i turned into a Snow Leopard with a tonic, then kept fooling around with 2 other people in a town for half an hour, smiling and laughing all along, having way more fun than actually thinking about having a really really expensive weapon.

That was the moment when i realized why it’s so pointless to “grind” for Legendaries. The game does not get more fun just because i have one. I imagine it to be like the main story of Skyrim… once i completed it, i lost 60% of my motivation to do anything else in the world, since it did not feel threatened anymore and i haven’t even got proper “cheering” for it, just a oneliner of a thanks, exactly like for saving a random farmer’s chicken.

That’s how i imagine Legendaries. I would get it finally, after months, hell maybe a year, then there it is. It sits in my inventory or in my characters hands, i run around with the effects for 5 minutes, then realize that nothing has changed and nobody cares… and they are right, why should they?

What do you guys most enjoy in the game? Do you actually want a Legendary and if so, why?
