The #1 method for killing your own product is to not sell it.
Good morning fine GW2 fans and ArenaNET people (at least its morning where I am). I am groggily writing this as I recuperate after three long days at the Penny Arcade Expo in Boston. It was a great time! But onto the crux of the conversation I want to start.
Where the heck is GW2’s marketing department? Why are they not pushing this game outside of strictly GW2 markets? I’m talking about representing themselves at community events (PAXEast and other game conventions) and online outside of specifically GW2 communities (MMO Champion as an example).
At PAX I spend most of the convention just talking to people primarily because my wife works in the industry so I tend to support her at panels and doing some husband as forklift jobs while she’s doing interviews with devs and folks. I spoke to dozens of complete strangers about what games they play and what they thought of the MMO scene in general (given that really there is only Wildstar and Everquest NEXT in the AAA queue which is a little scary after years of having something new to look forward to). No one mentioned GW2 and when I brought it up the reaction I got from a lot of people was a shaked head followed by “Its sad that it failed”. When I explained that economically the game is actually doing quite well and has delivered content more regularly than any MMO I am aware of I was universally met with disbelief – the average MMO player seems to equate GW2 with SWOTOR and Warhammer Online (as games that have ceased to create content outside of things to buy… or simply ceased being).
I’ve gone to PAX for four years. Outside of the PAX prior to release, ArenaNET has never really been active at the convention and even then it was just on the panels, never with a booth. This year apparently Jon and Colin were onsite but they had a room completely separate from the convention (it was in the adjacent hotel) and it was for Press only.
GW2 is a great game. I’ve been playing MMO’s for over a decade and GW2 is the first that I really just fell in love with. I play everyday, I play PvE and WvW and ever so occasionally sPvP (although I have begun watching the tournament and those are really fun). There is so much content within the game! I honestly believe that even a modest booth with a game play demo would have resulting in hundreds of game sales. Heck, there was a THREE HOUR wait at the Microsoft Booth to play Killzone on the Xbox One. That game has been out for six months and I think it would be hard to argue that their level of content has increased even at a fractional level where GW2 has a year worth of bi-weekly updates and a movie that summarizes new content and changes!
Your forum community managers are superb. Your game and design are impeccable (not to say improvements can’t be made, but you tend to make them). But its time for ArenaNET or NCSoft to reach out to top notch professional marketing teams that can trot the product around (the less said about the live action GW2 commercial from just post launch the better).
Next year at PAXEast make sure you have a presence. Look at Bioware’s model, this year they didn’t have their booths and didn’t have high profile panels, but they did setup their own room in the convention hall and have trailers for their games past and present rolling, writers, devs, and community managers available to talk to fans and I think they are going to walk away with a lot of both awareness and good will.
If this weekend was any indication, the greater community seems to have forgotten that your game exists, do not let them. I’m writing this as someone who is VERY invested in your game, world, and future prosperity.
Only PvP and WvW?
World completion, farming (of various kinds), dungeons, fractals, ascended gear, legendaries, minis, wardrobe, living story. And when you’re done with all of that, start a guild, grind out all of the influence and help others do these things to.
And don’t forget to talk to people. Find somewhere, sit down, and talk.
It sounds to me like you want open-world PvP, this is never going to happen. However I agree that duelling in PvE would be nice to have.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

It’s indicates time spent playing the game. No one has 10k+ AP without having spent a lot of time in GW2. As a rule of thumb, someone who has spent more time playing tends to be better than someone who has spent less time playing. It doesn’t exactly have an overwhelming degree of accuracy, but it’s the best indicator available in game.
Would be nice. If you have all you need to make a certain armorpiece, dish, whatever, it would be so much easier to craft. Not to mention all the times I’ve made the wrong recipe..
How about a tab system? Will work for most crafts, and possibly for cooking.
Tier/Tab 1: Refinement (ore to ingots, wood to planks).
Tier/Tab 2: Dowels/insignia etc
Tier/Tab 3: Base parts (blades, hilts, leather soles etc)
Tier/Tab 4: Final items.
When discovering you need to build the lower tier stuff. Once a recipe is known you can craft directly from Tab 4.
Adding a level band to all stages to aid in making kit for sale/alts would also be very useful. Ie is it copper, iron or steel for a lvl 15 weapon?
Problem is there is nothing in the game hard enough to warrant a legendary. Aside from pvp.
I would be all for an extreme jumping puzzle that gave a legendary though. Talking clock tower on steroids.

there are probably cheaper ways to level your crafts… karka shells expensive.
heres a good website

I threw a die and it landed on 4. Did they nerf 1?
Its damage, healing and interaction with Virtue of Justice are balanced around its current tempo.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

This will be good for all parties. People who do this will be able to get more legendary skins because they’ll have a lot of money, and the prices of legendary won’t inflate as quickly for a while
Yes but how ’’legendary’’ is a weapon as soon as everyone has it… I mean not only will Sunrise/Twilight skins become more common but also the skins of all the other legendaries, as people with sunrise and twilight can get 2-3 for those for nothing pretty much.
How ‘legendary’ is a weapon that you can buy with your credit card rather than actually having to play the game for it?
Not very imo, but I guess everyone is different.
No – then players would be complaining that Lyssa is too easy.
Please stop.
Why? She’s the only remotely interesting Temple event.
Yeah, just looks like you are looking for a way to inject more precursors into the economy.

So I was standing around in Queensdale being lazy as usual… When I noticed the sun took a certain shape. ArenaNet obviously has something in store for us.

SHHH!! don’t tell them that! Leave my ice bow alone!
No they are just powerful.
IMHO they are the thing I need to get if I need to carry a (dungeon)group. I did a run in AC recently and the group had a 3 low levels in it 37, 40-50 , a zerk warrior lvl 80 and I had my ele. We managed to pull things off becasue we could rely on the extra strength of the weapons, else we wouldn’t have succeeded…
The lower level characters did their best. And 2 of 3 knew AC. And 2 said they were running fine and masterwork items. We even did Kohler without too many problems. Luckily WoR was unlocked by the guardian.
They are powerfull The Lightning Hammer and Icebow have their own uses and are fun to use. Fiery GS has it’s own purpose. I’ll leave it at that, It’s a very powerful item which hase helped many pug groups accomplish dungeopns against all odds.
In PvE they are OP in the low levels but they unlock slowly for starters. You’ll be lvl 30 before you unlock FGS anyways. If you have decent armor and you move into a 1-10 areas you’ll see you’ll instakill or 2 hit most enemies without conjured weaposn anyways. It has mostly to do with the fact those areas are meant to be played while you cannot use traits yet, in lvl 0-10 white or blue armor. At lvl 35 you can get the first rares anyways (using dungeon tokesn → for 240 AC tokens you’ll have a nice shiny AC set. Rare with comparable stats both in attribs and armor.)
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
I would love to see new hairstyles with colored streaks in them. I think this would go over insanely well! The “accessory” color could be used to change the color of the streak.
Yes, I’m a girl, and yes, I’m vain.

where did you read one time only per account ?
single use as in it is not a reusable item, when it’s full you need to buy a new one lol !
Actually the only other repeatable achievement I can think of is the Salvage one, and guess what? It is capped.
Also keep in mind that no one is even close to hitting the cap yet, so it is not really that much of an issue.
It is not really that much of an issue, now. When I hit the cap, which eventually I will if I keep playing, and there are still the achievement chests rewards that I want and it will take me longer, much longer, to get these rewards, then it will be an issue for me and anyone else like me.
Not sure what to make of this either. I d have gone the other way, and made them more, to allow others to get achievements——if they want them. Sure there are people complaining that they don’t have time to do them. But then, by the same token it could be argued that people who have done accomplishments on mega bosses shouldn’t have them because, others didn’t have the time/ opportunity to do it. Sorry that argument just doesn’t wash. As in in real life there are some people gifted, some less so; some with more time, some with less. Its a bit like looking at Usain Bolt, and the the placed runners saying—-‘your too fast—-here—-take this sack of potatoes and run against us—-much fairer’.
Please, by the Six, not a return to Spamadan.
You know, FFXIV tried that. They had to destroy the world and re make it.
This is exactly why we don’t have capes.
THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT OF…
I’m just going to go with pvp in general…. I’m just…not good at it. I try, but I seem to lack the dexterity or something.
99% missed POI in order of whispers cave. bloodtide coast >deadend wp go to south and enter instance.
No. You forget the difference between the gear you have now (3 uber high stats) compared to the gear typically available at those levels (1 single, MAYBE two, digit stat). The scaling also does not take into account reducing your trait bonuses, nor does it correctly scale high level armor.
That looks amazing, and I approve entirely!!!
Edit: to expand on your idea, I have attached a photoshopped version that could be used as the “night time” eternity, maybe?
