Normalized Character Models in sPvP

Playing as an Asura in PvP is like playing as Oddjob in multiplayer Goldeneye.

Cheap.

…although I did laugh last night playing sPvP when I saw a tiny Asura Engineer called “Net Turret”.

Quite an effective ruse, haha!

Normalized Character Models in sPvP

There’s a pretty simple solution to this that would make both camps happy.

Just make it so each player has the OPTION of using normalized models for other players. This would work the same way that the “Show Team Colors” option currently does:

If I check the “normalize models” option, then everyone else’s character will always appear to me as a regular-sized human. BUT, each player will still see his own character as he originally designed it. So if you play an Asura, you will always view your character as an Asuran. You can play in all the tournaments, etc., and on your screen your character will look exactly the way you designed him/her. However, on my screen, your character will look like a regular-sized human.

This solution let’s people keep their character customization, but let’s the hypercompetitive players maintain and even playing field. As far as tournaments go, it would be up to the Caster to decide whether to check the “normalize models” option or not.

I’ve seen other people suggest this solution before, and I don’t claim to have originated it. In fact, it’s already been implemeneted with respect to team colors. I could deck my character out completely in pink, but if you have “Show Team Colors” selected, then my character will look either “Red” or “Blue” to you depending on my team. It is only logical to apply this same idea to the character-race problem.

Normalized Character Models in sPvP

I’ll keep this short because there is no reason to write an essay on the topic.

The race choices should not have an effect on sPvP.

Having every single player play a little Asura for the very real advantage of having far less visible animations in an animation based combat system is not ideal. The game would be far more enjoyable if both players and spectators were actually able to discern which animations were happening on screen.

Currently when multiple characters are fighting on screen there is a good chance that all or most of the characters on the screen are tiny Asuras that appear to be jumping around doing random indistinguishable things that end up having various effects on the battle. The exception is the Mesmer class where most players opt to have a giant Norn character so that they are able to spam enormous clones and phantasms to cause the opponent to have to deal with an outrageous amount of screen clutter.

One of the biggest issues with Guild Wars 2 sPvP has been the fact that combat tends to devolve into a cluster_____ of animations and visual overload and the race choice issue compounds this to the point where some classes are exponentially more powerful when played as a certain race because key animations become nearly impossible to spot(prime example: Warrior) or because they cause so much visual overload on the battlefield that they become a huge detriment to the concept of skilled play(prime example: Mesmer)

Please add an option for players to have all other character models in sPvP be switched to Human(or their choice of race if that isn’t too difficult to implement). I can’t imagine that this would be difficult since this is conceptually very similar to the enemy/friendly color options you introduced many months ago. This small and highly effective change would also help YOU balance the game better by properly taking into account the ability for players to spot certain animations and react accordingly. Currently some abilities that would be perfectly balanced end up being either extremely weak or extremely powerful based on race choice and this is detrimental to the competitive nature of sPvP.

-No hard counters are not bad.

They are bad, hard counters are nothing more than rock-paper-scissors. Oh you brought a warrior which renders whole traitlines completely nonfunctional on the flimsiest class in the game? Great.

Thieves have shadowsteps on demand on their weapons with zero cooldown. They can teleport to you with mug. If they are in trouble they can run away while stealthed. If they are stupid enough to stand beside me when stealthed then they should drop.
Everyone agrees that the thief class in this game is broken due to repeated stealth during combat -except thief players-.
Stealth will not be addressed directly. I think almost a whole year since the game out with no significant change to stealth kinda shows that.

1.) If they are stupid enough to stand by you while stealthed, they will go down… because they aren’t magically immune to damage.
2.) Innitiative (though sword 2 needs a bit of a tweaking in costs) limits your “no cooldown” clause.
3.) The thief has two viable weapon sets, one of which depends on stealth rather heavily and one which depends on the sword’s ability to move all over the place. If you suddenly add a “no stealth for you” clause, the class will be down to all of one spec.

-immobilize on crit can have an internal cool down. Not rocket science. Do you check the trait description on various classes?

I didn’t consider the cooldown, fair enough though I question where or how this could be balanced to not be utterly broken at 100% crit.

Who told you that DOtE bypasses protection??
Just a reminder about protection:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Protection

No one did, try to actually read what I wrote.

Thieves: Have a WEAPON skill with ZERO cooldown that STEALS two boons..not increases damage..not removes boons..STEALS them
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Larcenous_Strike
This uses 4 initiative in total and thieves have 12-15 initiative with it ticking or replenished with some other traits while it is being used.

Mesmers: Instant AOE complete boon removal and condition removal
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Null_Field

Necros: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Corrupt_Boon enough said

Thieves steal boons… you don’t say? Perhaps it has something to do with their main class mechanics of stealing things. Necros and mesmers, ala GW1 origins, destroy/convert boons and conditions? Holy kitten! You know what warriors could do against enchantments in GW1? Cry. The era of Blinding Surge in its heyday is a prime example of why hard counters to classes is stupid.

You have to deal with the fact that not every class is meant to do the same exact things.

I just wanted to quote lots of stuff too

The ability to save trait allocation/builds

Neare.9703

Perhaps we could see something like this in the future for the pvp trait window. Such as a drop down menu that would allow us to save trait allocations and change between them quickly while sitting in HoTM. Even more so useful would be for this to save equipment and utilities also, so it would both save a lot of time and stop our little bags getting full of different armour and weapon combinations.

Nothing necessary of course, but it would be a nice addition.

Destruction of the Empowered
Deal 5% bonus damage per unique boon on your target.
Each time you hit the target, heal yourself for each boon he has.
(At level 80, the amount healed per boon is 49 + 0.01 * Healing Power.)

Example:
If your target has 3 unique boons, each hit will heal you for 150.
This would allow warriors to have an Anti-Bunker Role in SPVP/PVP, but not overpower them in PvE, because most mobs do not have boons except bosses.

Most mobs, trash mobs don’t even have boons, so in PvE they would not gain a bunker increase.

100Blades on an activated Lyssa Rune; 3600 instant heal and 45% extra damage. In the same trait. Woop woop.

Is this a joke.. I’m a main thief and secondary class Warrior. While I do agree that warrior needs major attention in Spvp; Arena net devs are replying to which I’m saying congrats! You’re acknowledging the problem.. but do you plan to do anything about thieves… There has been zero replies to hundreds of ideas in the thief section and not one reply; meanwhile warrior gets 5-10+ arena net replies.. This in no way is fair; Pistolwhip / Dancing dagger have been nerfed due to quickness and need revamping , P/P set, a few trait lines.. This is my knowledge of thief only; I’m sure other classes are being neglected as well..

Really? Warriors are the worst class in pvp. Give us a kitten break! You are viable on tourney teams, warriors are not.

Judging by your username; you’ve had too much of that. Please read my entire post and stop picking at certain parts.

Suggestions with 4000+ views vs. responses

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: RoyHarmon.5398

RoyHarmon.5398

As was mentioned earlier in this thread, we have stated that we are unable to provide a reply to all suggestions posted in the suggestion subforum.

We do, however, regularly read the suggestions forum and deliver feedback to the design team on a daily basis. Just because you haven’t seen a reply does not mean it’s not being read.

Could we get a “dev +1” so we know a dev has checked the topic and we can feel all warm and fuzzy inside?

This is exactly what I’ve always wanted! (TL;DR below.)

If I suggest something, that means I feel as though I have something to contribute. In fact, it means I was so moved by its necessity that I chose to spend several minutes searching for existing threads, articulating and revising my words, and then trying to come up with other ways to improve my suggestion before finally hitting “Create Topic.” I know others may not give it that much thought, but if I’m putting something on the Internet, I usually try to think it over a bit. Usually.

All I really want is to know that my suggestion has been seen by someone who might consider doing something about it. I don’t need a detailed response, and I’m not even asking for an opinion on whether or not they like my idea. They’re busy people, and if they spend as much time on their posts as I do (I’ve been on this one for nearly 10 minutes already and revised it several times), I’d rather they spend that time doing something more productive than talking to me.

I want to know I’ve been heard, even if they don’t agree with it. I want to know that in some meeting later on, when someone in some meeting mentions right-clicking vs. left-clicking, it might bring to mind that post about the abhorrently broken targeting system that galls me so. Or maybe when they’re playing the game, they’ll see a really interesting trinket at a karma merchant and think, “Too bad I can’t have that on a level-80 trinket— oh, hey! I read a suggestion about that once. I see what that guy was talking about!”

Even if they never act on my suggestion, I would love to somehow know that they had glimpsed it, if only for a minute. Otherwise, I have no reason to believe it hasn’t slipped through the cracks. (I’ve seen responses to fresh posts about old issues in which it was obvious the developer had been completely unaware of it previously.)
That makes me suspect that I just wasted 15 minutes that I could have spent doing something fun, and that maybe if I had spent less time on spelling, grammar, hyperlinks, or facts, I wouldn’t be so annoyed that they instead chose to respond to someone with a full mailbox complaining about not getting their gem store items. (But honestly, why is that still an issue? Either fix the counter, make that “Temple of the Silent Storm week” message stop counting against the queue, or— and here’s the good part— make the Black Lion deliveries exempt from the mail queue! What harm would it cause if people waited a while to pull their Black Lion Keys out of the mail? Do you think they would buy so many items with gems that it would overload the mail system? Are you really afraid of that? But I digress…)

And now, because I know that was a lot to read, I’ll even throw in a…

TL;DR: It would be incredibly mollifying to have a way of knowing that a developer had actually read my suggestion. Since it’s claimed that they’re reading these things anyway, why not just have a little check mark that they can click to let me know I’ve been heard? That wouldn’t take more than two seconds out of their busy developer days, and it would make me rant far less. Everyone wins!

We think that Warriors need more sustain in sPvP. You’ll see this reflected in upcoming balance changes.

Traits are huge in this, and just like you saw trait reworks recently for Warrior, we’ll be doing more trait changes to help to this end.

It’s Sunday, but I still wanted to jump in here to let you guys know we’re not ignoring you!

Finally an answer That may be the start of the Warrior “new era” :P
Everyone here hope for some nice improvements in next 2 patches.
And if you need ideas, GW2 forums are full of them

We read the forums a lot more than you know. Karl/Peters and I actually print out threads sometimes and bring them to balance meetings.

We’re not ignoring any of the classes, I’m sorry if people feel that way. We simply don’t have time to personally post in all threads, on all our sub-forums.

Alot of the Na teams run with 1 bunker, and 4 dps (3 power 1 cond) usually.
Condition dps are sometimes called ‘debunkers’ as they are useful for helping with quick taking down guardians.

Also, warriors will typically defensively roam because they dont have good disengage. They usually dont push the far point.
Whereas a thief, might be BOTH a defensive roamer and far point pusher.
(this isnt to say warrior never pushes far node its just alot more risky).

Name: Roamer
Characteristics: sustained mobility, jack of all trades, navigation (teleport etc)
Description: The roamer has one qualification, mobility they need to be able to get across the map fast and be a first responder for help or whatever action needs to happen. Example they will be coming in for a killing blow as someone is running away towards the roamer. The build type does not matter but they are always extremely mobile. The type of player who usually plays this is someone who knows the maps, they know what the game flow is and they are thinking ahead of the game by 3 moves to anticipate where they need to be, for example being right there for that last shot to kill and steal the boss then they rush off to go support a point. Roamers are highly motivated self-thinkers who do not need to be instructed on what to do, and are also highly communicative as they are the scouts to tell everyone what’s happening on the battlefield.

Name: Team Fighter
Characteristics: Mobility, numbers based buffs / debuffs (The amount of players)
Description: A team fighter is someone who may not be Burst / glass / carry DPS or best support but they have utilities that can devastate in large groups. One major example of this is a venom share thief. Team fighters are usually assigned to a group or are constantly moving to the next battle hotspot, but are not truly a roamer they go where the fight is happening. A good team fighter can turn the tide of any battle and most high end teams will not run without one.

Name: Shutdown
Characteristics: CC, Lockdown, low cool-down cc, stun, daze etc.
Description: A shutdown is really simple. Immobilize, root, cc, lockdown, take someone out of play for 6 seconds or more. Shutdowns are used against carries/ glass cannons / stompers etc. This role is usually mixed with Team Fighter.

Name: Ranged Or Melee Carry / Glass Cannon / Burst
Characteristics: Highest DPS, Burst DPS, high cool-down skills, usually less than 4 second kills.
Description: A Cary is typically a glass cannon build, while they could be roamers these type of roles require teamwork to support them while they demolish player by player. Example a high toughness / health supporter may be assigned to guard the carry and help keep them safe while they wait for the cool downs to come back up. They can be used to ambush people as they respawn, help in team fights, assigned to the bunker as his dps for mid etc. A prime example of this is a back stab thief; yes the ones people complain about killing them in 2 seconds. But you look at them wrong and they will die. These roles sacrifice everything they can to be able to kill as fast as possible.

[Team Roles]everything you want to know

Defining roles for sPvP in GW.

There is a ton of terminology that gets passed around about builds roles etc. but there’s not a huge amount of information on what they mean. When we talk of roles in sPvP its interchangeable with a build and can be combined with other roles or builds so not a definite this or that it’s not just a build or not a in map function. So to take this at the very basic level you build your spec / build out of the roles you want to fulfill.

Role + role + role = build

Now in to the descriptions, keep in mind some of the terminology has been carried over from other competitive pvp games and some is unique to GW2. Also I am writing this on no sleep for a day or so but needed to get this info for a website / sPvP Roster web application I am programing.

ROLES:

Name: Bunker
Characteristics: Health and toughness, survivability.
Description: A Bunker is someone who can take a ton of damage and stay alive for quite some time under pressure. They may lack some CC’s and point control but they are made to literally sit somewhere and stay there. Typically most people use a bunker as a node defender. Another note is that a team’s bunker is the beefiest of the Defenders so they are typically assigned to the midpoint

Name: Node Defender
Characteristics: Heavy CC / Point Control, Survivability (not meaning heath / toughness can be healing / evasion etc.)
Description: A node defender goes hand and hand with a bunker usually, but they will typically sacrifice some defense / health to have massive CC & point control. Node defenders typically can last quite some time but not as long as a pure bunker.

Name: Backpoint Defender
Characteristics: Survivability, utility, self-sufficient
Description: The backpoint defender is usually a build / class with survivability and utility. They typically can dps or support. Good examples of standard classes for this are Trap tank rangers and Mesmer’s running portal. Their primary goal since the points close to the base is to keep it locked down as much as possible. They can and will unlike a bunker who stays there typically till death, the backpoint defender typically has some mobility so they can flee the fight / come back after being stomped and back cap it after they assault is finished and reclaim it.

Name: Farpoint Assaulter
Characteristics: Hybrid damage & survivability, mobility.
Description: a Farpoint Assaulter is a hybrid dps, they have survivability and can do some good damage. They are the ANTI backpoint defender, their job is to assault the far point and keep it contested and uncapped. To be successful they don’t have to fully cap as long as it’s not fully capped by the other team. They typically use tactics like downing the backpoint defender and leaving him downed by doing just enough damage to maximize his time out of play. So in a nutshell they kill the backpoint defender and then harass / stall the backpoint defender from recapping as long as they can.

Name: Support
Characteristics: healing, utility, buffing, debuffing, cleansing
Description: A Support role is typically paired with a defensive build, the supportive build has high team healing, they have boon sharing, they typically have protection for reviving allies and cleanses for conditions. Supports main job is kind of like a healer in the typical MMORPG trinity except for the fact that in gw2 this does not work due to lack or healing in abundance. This role is your help your team jack of all trades buff when you can swiftness on tap etc.
