Pathetic Perception of Rangers

Hello,

The goal of this post is to get the attention of the developers. This isn’t about the problems our class has, but it IS about the perception of our class in the game.

Our server is in T2. We have a lot of hardcore players. Its pretty sad that you can be on the server voice chat (yes server, not just guild) and everyone is laughing and making fun of rangers. I usually have pretty thick skin, but it happens every night. Even if I was the best ranger to grace this game (I’m not), it would be hard to hear this over and over. No matter how good I play the perception of just about everyone is that we rangers are just free bags.

Folks can make as many excuses for how good we are and tell me I suck at playing my profession or I’m doing it wrong, but it doesn’t change the fact that everyone else thinks this profession is garbage. Its to the point that people don’t even want to play with rangers around.

I paid for this game just like the guy playing the elementalist, thief, guardian, or mesmer. Fix this kitten class or give us something to change the perception so those of us who stick with it through all this crap talking can enjoy the game too.

I’m still here and lurking about (as is the balance team) …

You must mean the ‘un-balance’ team, because all that has happened resulted in less balance after every update.

Sorry Robert, after 7 months your words ring too hollow. All I know is that Ranger plays worse now than it did at launch. I don’t do PvP, so your wins/ranking mean nothing to me.

What does matter to me is PvE and dungeons. I read that dungeons are your thing, well, I do not dare bring my ranger into dungeons anymore. In fact, I cringe when I see a ranger in my dungeon party now because I know the class will bring nothing.

All my ranger does now is crafting, the easier daily/monthly achievement bits, and the dragon events. I don’t even bring the ranger to harvest Orr anymore, my guardian does that.

For me your so-called balance team has been systematically destroying what fun there was to this class since launch. Is this the direction Anet wants for the ranger??

I’d like Guard to be made useful again in WvW
Pet’s, especially flying ones, should be able to swoop down from a wall and attack and vice versa. ESPECIALLY, when Engi’s can drop kit’s on top of walls and Mesmer clones/illusions can go on top of walls and behind gates.

If you are about balance, well… it’s not really. Nor is it even fun!

Happy to see someone from anet is still keeping an eye on the forums but I noticed they said we will just have to get used to the new quickness, I really hope that doesn’t mean they think the QZ skill is ok. It was rebalanced as if the ranger class is the same as the others but its not. Significantly lowering the overall damage you can do from the skill and increasing the risk. That makes QZ useless for its original purpose (burst damage) and as if in trade off the skill has been given a stun break essentially repurposing the skill. The problem with that is this – when do you need a stun break? typically when you are getting battered and need to heal asap. With the extra second added you can’t heal for that much longer. There is no longer any beneficial use of the QZ skill and I don’t see how anyone could honestly argue otherwise.

“It was a dreadful night. The rain poured down hard around us and the Doylak trudged through the mud at a slow pace. The guard tower was in sight and the gate was only a short walk from where we stood. My Aspenwood comrades were telling tales about their epic killshots and highest critting backstabs as they walked along side the shaggy beast. Our elementalist casually cast swirling winds to ward the rain as he sipped from his golden flask.

I saw it, from the corner of my eye. It was but a blur, a black shape sweeping along the outlying mists. A pistol dagger thief perhaps? Maybe a backstabber? A mesmer in veil? Whatever it was it surely wasn’t stupid enough to attack this Doylak head on with four seasoned guards escorting it? I took confidence in the fact that my team ran only the most broken cookie cutter builds. We had a bunker ele with two daggers, who would dare challenge us?

Then it happened. Our Doylak, the prized beast that would carry our team to pointopia and grant us the power to erect powerful reinforced gates… just dropped dead in front of all four of us.

WHAT THE KITTEN! Our commander shouted! His head swiveled around in a panic, like a glass cannon staff ele who was standing in spawned lava adds of the Champion Grawl Shaman.

But there was nothing. We scouted the entire area, searching through the ruddy swamp, our weapons burning with might stacks and fully charged sigils of bloodlust. But there was nothing there…

We hid our faces in shame as we returned to the camp. To this day, I still don’t know what the hell happened that night."

However all of those were fair changes. I adapted my build and continued on my way. I am a ranger for life. All you other wannabes can go play a different class.

Well, lets give Joey a gold star …

I have over 1k hrs logged on my ranger, been my main since game launched. In the beginning the ranger was a fun class to play, I soloed all the PvE map exploration, I have 100% world on my ranger. Did a lot of dungeon runs, including Arah story. Still think players like me are wannabes??

Patch after patch the ranger class has become worse and worse to play. I haven’t been in a dungeon on my ranger since my guardian hit lvl 80 in Jan. I don’t go near Orr anymore on my ranger, my guardian does that, Frostgorge is the only high-level map my ranger goes to now.

My ranger is power/crit and I like using dual bows or LB/GS. QZ has been on my utility bar forever, is has been an integral part of my build for as long as I have been playing the class.

I don’t want to play a condition/trap or a bunker beastmaster ranger, I want to play the style/build I want to play. But now this build has become so sub-par, even starter and mid-level zones are a chore. I can forget about ever stepping into a dungeon again on my ranger ..

So yes, I am going to play another class …

Nah, I get frustrated like the rest of you. Anet drives me crazy at times with some of their decisions. At times I honestly believe that during their weekly meetings they laugh their arses off after trolling the community with some of the “features” they have in the game. I could make a long list of things that I think are a joke.

I may not be a Ranger Primary, but like some here I’ve played many MMORPGs.

This is the very first game I have played where my own guild officers who love their ranger classes to death have called it quits on the class. Not just them but actually a lot on my friendlist have actually called it quits on Ranger.

I have not seen this before.
A Class that is undergoing extinction in WvW due to the fact it has almost nothing it can do better than other classes. In fact even the pet AI is messed up and it doesn’t work in human vs human.

I have eight characters, five of them to 80, working on the last three and I always thought the idea of balancing was to actually make classes more viable rather than less.

….I don’t want to see a reply saying “learn to play” as I trust my friends like there is no tomorrow when they try and try and find that at the rate Ranger is going, its better to roll practically anything else.

You are lucky that Rangers are choosing to continue playing this game by rolling another character class. Its far too much kindness as I would have left to a game that actually supports their playstyle.

I mean…I remember playing PvE with a ranger and it took a while to actually hit triple digit numbers using certain skills while a warrior was able to hit four digit damage numbers early on.

Really, thanks…..
I urge rangers who feel discriminated to rather than roll another class, to actually take a break from the game in protest as its not fair to be treated like garbage.

…and yeah! If you are the worse class and have to grind 4000 hours to reach max WvW skill cap, then this game just became grindier than Lineage 2, which was at one point the Grindiest game in existence.

Great Job at going back on your word. Knowing Ranger, it would take 5000+ hours. :P So much for having a real life.

Well well well, a constructive thread with #‘s and the funny thing is Chopps and Durzlla aren’t here to troll in defense of the nerfs we’ve received like they do every month because hard facts and numbers are involved.

Good work looking at these numbers, it does show alot for sure especially in the light of how much our dps is altered by this as a ranger.

Lol wut? I’ve never once said the changes to QUICKNESS was a buff, I know it nerfed spike damage, I’m not denying that I’ve just said the SKILL QZ has been buffed. Huge difference… I have nothing to really add to this post, his math is accurate, no need to insult me for “trolling” when I’m just more adaptive with my builds.

This is circular logic.

First, and foremost if you’re forced to use a stun break, get this; “you are being attacked” therefore using QZ as a stun break puts a detriment upon you, where you can not be healed. Why is this an issue you might ask? Well as I pointed out, you were already being attacked, so now you’re taking damage you can’t heal, and multiple classes in this game can easily kill you in five seconds, most importantly though, you can now be stunned, immobilized, crippled, or chilled, making it even easier to kill you. There are not diminishing returns for CC in this game.

Secondly, the nerf to QZ far outweighs what you call a buff. Therefore the only conclusion from this is that you’re choosing to rile peoples feathers by calling an obvious nerf, a buff. Why is that?

Now Quiching Zypher. Well I ques Arenanet keeps on hitting with the “NERF HAMMER”.

You cant make me force to play OP warrior, when I still enjoy my ranger.
I even made a second ranger because I love them so much.

Now you can try to make this game as hard as you want for rangers, but I wont give up. I’ Shall work my way around other effective builds. And with that said.

Arenanet FEAR ME with your NERF HAMMER. Because this ranger inst backing down.
I’ll hunt you down in tyria, shoot arrows to your knees. And stop this madness!

(No but with out any jokes… When will you stop hitting the ranger so hard? Cant you go back to the PvE & PvP skills. Keep QZ 100% Quickness in PvE but with no stun breaker.
And give the PVP version of QZ 50%Quickness but can break stun.)

Now the pvp’ers will be pleased. And the PvE’s to.

I… sadly have to sign a lot of what Kata says.

I recently started playing Ranger after a long while (last time in beta), because it was actually the class I originally wanted to play on release, but decided for a thief in the end.
After maxing out my Thief, Elementalist and Warrior in all kinds of builds and roles… I have to say that I’m utterly disappointed by the Ranger. She’s 80 with almost max stats now and it’s so sad to see that whatever I want to do with her – one of my other characters can do it better by a LOT.
I feel useless when going dungeons or fractals. Although useless may not be the right expression…. it’s more that I feel like a BURDEN to everyone since I know that I would be much more efficient if I had logged on one of my alts for that run. It’s just so sad.

I enjoy the class and its design (I always loved the idea of pet classes), but in most cases it’s more of a hinderence in being effective.
Alright, I don’t have nearly as much experience as most Rangers in this thread… but reading this thread shows me that many other people got the same gripes as I do.

I really want to enjoy PLAYING the Ranger, but right now I can’t. Whatever I do, I get painfully reminded that someone or even my alts could do it much better.

Maybe I still need to learn a few tricks… but so many other Rangers got the same problems. Problems that don’t even exist with the other classes.
I like the idea of having a more important class mechanic… but the fact that our class mechanic is vitally important to even be “effective” at all while other classes just push their F keys when they are ready or sometimes even >not at all< wink warrior just gives me a headache.

Other things like “Longbow damage is a joke” shouldn’t even have to be mentioned.
Everyone with common sense has to agree that right now the longbow is really awful.
Why do I do more damage with my shortbow (autoshots only without flanking) than with the longbow at max range and using Rapid Fire? It just drives me nuts…
And yeah… many of the issues have been described by Kata.

Ranger may be a fun and awesome class on concept (that’s why I want to enjoy playing it!), but right now the reality looks pretty grim.

Funny thing is… if I hadn’t played other classes in the same roles, I would be totally oblivious to how “bad” the Ranger performs. But seeing the direct comparison is just insane.

Please let there something be done, so I can finally enjoy the class I wanted to enjoy from my first beta weekend forward… :<

I had to wait 12-14 hours just to not get instant ban because of my opinion on the “great” update.

I wonder what Jon Peters thinks about this huge patch and where is he to answer this forum thread that HE created. They totally ignore the ranger class and i am sick of it. Half a year and all we get is nerfs and “fixes” that makes us weaker and weaker.

Yesterday on mumble after i summarized changes to my guild, 1 of my mates actually asked: “They fixed guard? The only thing that ranger was usable in WvW.” It was a joke but he was totally right. We can surely play our class good in our point of view but THERES NOTHING, i repeat NOTHING we can offer for a party or the guild that other classes cant do actually FAR BETTER. Our dmg is a joke, our only weapon aoe skill is rooting us for 1-2 sec even on QZ in the middle of a zergfight. Our support with warhorn 5 and healing spring is a joke compared to the Guardian/Elementlist support abilities.

We are getting Icon changes while we are suffering from the following SERIOUS problems:

Our pet AI is a joke.
Lick wounds is not working 50% the time.
Our pet is not sharing our Agony Resistance. Makes 40% of our outgoing dmg inaccessible for 50 sec.
Our utilities are the worst among ALL classes. Far the worst.
Our Spirits are dieing from a slight fart while other classes spirit weapons getting a buff or just not destructible.
We have 2 viable build. 2 build for a class. Are you joking?
And thousand more.

Congratulation for the patch. It was worth waiting for it. You gave me a push towards leveling my low lvl warrior.

So with the upcoming buffs and the general complains that warrior DPS is so much better I took a closer look on the skill modifiers and the resulting power scaling/overall direct DPS.

Ranger GS

  • 1: 0.58/0.58/0.69 ==> 0.73/s
  • 2: 1.57 ==> 0.90/s [Old: 1.16 ==> 0.83/s]
  • 3: 1.05 ==> 0.71/s
  • 4: 1.36/1.05 ==> 0.76/s
  • 5: 0.52 ==> 0.74/s

Warrior GS

  • 1: 0.7/0.7/0.9 ==> 0.94/s
  • 2: 4.4+1.1 ==> 1.22/s
  • 3: 0.7 ==> 0.99/s
  • 4: 0.75 ==> 0.94/s
  • 5: 1.7 ==> 0.93/s

So the first numbers are the skill modifiers for every skill including the autoattack chain. The higher these are the more damage you will do with every point of power. The bold numbers are the actual DPS skill modifier (the damage you would do per second multiplied with the power and weapon damage you have and divided by the target armor). This factors in the animation times of the skills so for skills 2-5 this shows the DPS you would do if you use the skill between autoattacks whenever it is off cooldown. Attention: While I meassured the the duration of 1 autoattack chain myself I have to use the ingame tooltips for skills 2-5 because this is hard to accurately meassure. Arenanets tooltip tend to be very unprecise or wrong so take the bold numbers as approximations.

Example: Warrior autoattack chain has 0.7/0.7/0.9 skill modifiers and takes 2.44s to cast. This means the per second skill modifier is (0.7+0.7+0.9)/2.44s = 0.94/s. Skill 2 (Hundred Blades) has an overall 5.5 modifier but 3.5s animation time (<- ingame tooltip) so this means you are unable to autoattack during those 3.5s.

What does this tell us?

  • constantly using the DPS skill (which is at position 2 for both weapons) increases overall DPS for the Ranger by about 20% (depending on you condition damage and armor of the target) and 30% for the Warrior
  • overall untraited DPS of Warrior GS is about 30% higher than Ranger GS when autoattacking and 35% higher than Ranger GS when both maximixe damage using skill 2 (not including bleed damage of ranger)
  • using Swoop when you already are in melee ranger does actually decrease your DPS
  • Swoop and Maul tooltips are wrong because they state Swoop would deal more direct damage (actually Maul deals more direct damage)

First Edit: Thx to Tibbels who also did testings last year a confounding factor was revealed. I had a 10% more damage trait while flanking active when I did my initial tests (I forgot that heart of the mists saves different traits). I updated my values (which are still only approximate!). However this makes the difference between Warrior and Ranger quite a bit bigger.

Second Edit:
Solandri pointed out that using ingame tooltips for the autoattack animation time distorted my values by a lot. The autoattacks are actually way slower. I fixed this by meassuring the true autoattack speed ingame and updating my data.

Third Edit:
Included March 26 GS buffs. Overall Warrior still beats ranger by ~30% with the use of 100 blades. In a PvP scenario where hundred blades is way more unlikely to connect than Maul DPS advantage for warrior shrinks to propably less than 5%.

Basic spirit can “target place” not random pop up we can adjust them in good place for best effect and safe aera.

- Nature’s Vengeance Grand boon(per-type of spirt) on master aera and active effect when die.
-Spiritual Knowledge reduce20%cooldown on spirit skill / +15%better effect.

Yes, I want rangers to be good, yes, they need to be reworked, but giving pets permanent Protective Bond/Protective Spirit just isn’t the way at all.

Players can take 100% of their HP in a single hit, why shouldn’t pets?

Players can dodge.

While I agree 100% protective spirit would probably be OP, I disagree with your reasoning.

Comparing pets to players is simply unfair – players have many tools to keep themselves alive including the essential dodge (it’s what GW2 combat and dungeon design was built around) and because pets don’t have this tool (which allows multiple classes to solo bosses and even entire dungeon paths off of the strength of dodge) they are not viable by comparison. Pets are given nothing to compensate for the lack of dodge in a game where dodging is core to success in combat. That’s a massive design flaw. Encounters were designed with dodges in mind, pets were not designed with dodges in mind, this is a problem.

Comparing players, with the ability to dodge, to pets, without the ability to dodge, is narrow minded.

-I think all classes are viable in some way or form. No the game isn’t balanced, yet, but balance is easy to talk about yet rarely achievable.

Epic1Hitter bosses are crap.
-I agree, but for a different reason. When I was looking at this game in Beta, I came across the tequatl fight. It was epic then, all sorts of cannons and turrets working together to bring down this giant dragon. Nobody would dare get near Tequatl because it was just too kitten dangerous. Come release time and everything is completely reversed. There is literally NOBODY on the back lines, just 50 people nibbling at the dragon’s legs. I do think your idea of boss fights sounds cool, though. Makes me think of Starfox more than anything else, though.

Dynamic auto-targetting
-I haven’t noticed this being a problem for me, if only because the next enemy is usually behind me and I don’t realize it immediately. IMO there are bigger problems for Arenanet to tackle ATM.

sPvP variety
-Yes, and I’m pretty sure arenanet has more modes in the works at this very moment.

Music mixing rescript
-GW2’s music system has a whole slew of problems, and this is just one of them. The custom playlist system is very buggy as well. Would love to see this addressed, but I can’t say I’m in favor of your idea. Bugged Hit detection fix
-Would like to see this fixed, though some steps towards this have been made already.

Trebuchets captured!
-I Don’t WvW enough to know how imba/not imba this would be, though the idea interests me.

WvW Repair and WP’s
-You get gold for doing things right in WvW, you lose gold for dying. Though yes, waypoints should be free, and shouldn’t be blocked for so long.

Dungeon Stage Reward
-I had a similar idea where the trash dropped goodies as well as the bosses, with the end-dungeon bonus being significantly reduced. (bout 10 tokens compared to current 60, but you would still get roughly 60 tokens from a run overall.) Would like to see this addressed.

WvW Blueprint variety
-Love everything on this list, and would love to see them implemented.

WvW Fort Capture Chest
I don’t think the 1-2 hour grace period on forts is necessary, just prevent it from spawning multiple times in, say, 2 hours.

3 Stage moving system
-Don’t see the point to this. You already get a speed boost out of combat, and dodging is faster than all of these.

Ranger Redesign
-Again, I don’t play a ranger, so I can’t comment here.

Animal Interactions
-Interesting, but I don’t see much point to adding it.

Profession Weapon List redesign
-Rangers aren’t supposed to have guns, they’re the naturey type.
-I main a thief, and I can’t really see a sword in the offhand, or an axe at all. An arm-blade maybe, but not an axe. Rifle would be nice though, as a “Sniper” type weapon.
-Engineers have enough kits/sets to be absurdly versatile as-is. Though something like a hammer/mace would be cool, I can’t picture a greatsword engi very well…

Hounds of Balthazar/Prayer to Dwayna:
-Never used either.

Elite Skill Durations:
Racial elites are so unbalanced at the moment that it’s not even funny. The asurans have a power suit that is probably worse than every other weapon set in the game .(can BARELY win a 1v1 with a risen anything.) Either remake these elites or fix them to not be useless.

Animated Sheathed weapons:
-Don’t find it that interesting, compared to other things on this list…

Solution for Empty Areas
-I don’t think it’s a good idea to merge WvW with the PvE world. People who hate one and love the other will throw a fit and you know what happens when customers throw a fit… If you want to encourage high level players to go to low level zones, a lot of fundamental scaling needs to be changed.

-All events should give roughly the same karma/xp/gold at max level (longer or more difficult events would give more.)
-Low level crafting mats need to be more important at high levels.
-Karma rewards should scale with your level. Ex. If you’re level 10, the karma vendors sell lv 10 loot. If you’re level 80, the karma vendors sell lv 80 loot.

TL;DR Read some and got offended.

I’m from a line of hunters. Rangers make sense to have rifles. Pistols not so much. They are trackers/hunters not stalker/assassins. By the logic of “keeping quiet” you give more reason to remove firearms altogether from Thieves and giving them long bows since they are the descendants of the assassins.

A Ranger/Hunter/Tracker weapon selection from what we have in game should be:

Dagger
Rifle
Bows (Long and Short)
Torch
Axe
Harpoon Gun
Spear

No swords, great swords, or war horns.

Anyone including developers that think Rifles are not very natural obviously don’t realize that the ingredients to gunpowder are sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter (naturally occurring potassium nitrate).

And there is nothing more natural than the forging of metal which requires ALL 5 elements to make.

Earth = where the ore comes from
Fire = used to make the metal malleable
Air = used to make the fire hotter for the forging
Water = used to quench the hot metal
Spirit = the one who puts the other 4 elements to use while forging the metal.

Basically, ALL MMOs use D&D as their base model for classes. No one wants to use some sense when making classes. This leads to arguments over class balance. Real hunters will tell you how a Ranger would work. Real Soldiers will tell you how a Soldier class would work according to history and their training. Real Thieves and Assassins might not come forward and tell you how they really work, but a little sense could get you going in the right direction.

Hence why I am offended with any MMO that has a Druid class. I’m an actual Druid and we Druids DO NOT do anything remotely associated with the “cookie cutter” MMO Druid.

Oh and as far as bullets go. There is no Reload feature or ammunition in GW2 so asking where they would get the bullets is dumb. They would do the same thing every other hunter does. Take what they need with them. Where does the warrior keep his rounds, up his bum with his GS, Shield, 2 Maces, 2 Axes, Sword, etc.? so that needs to stop being said like now! Now if they are masters of Nature then im assuming they could do the same thing Captain Kirk did when he was fighting the Lizard guy on that barren planet where he used what was in nature to make a Highly combustible shot to kill it, from ROCKS not Poo.

Well the fact of the matter is there are no “Crossbows” in GW2. Until they add it keep dreaming. Its a nice thought but not something they can make readily available at the current moment. Now on the FACT that Rangers ARE HUNTERS. My statement is this, Go to any Norn area and look at the Hunters, they all have Bows and Rifles as do and should Rangers. Leading me to believe that even though Rangers are nature oriented that they focus primarily on USING NATURE to HUNT FOR PREY. Now a ranger not having the ability to use Rifles to HUNT is preposterous. All those that are fussing about it most likely don’t even Ranger main. But for ME and MYSELF, I have made my Rangers 1st and foremost on the front of my list in almost EVERY RPG and MMORPG. Now it has always been the focus for a Ranger/Archer/Marksman/Hunter/Survivalist to always have the most current advantages to ranged weaponry not because its in the name but because that is their primary focus. In GW1 for those of you who haven’t played and are basing your UNINFORMED OPINION on the fact that they are nature wanderers you think they are, GW1 said this about the rangers “The Ranger is the master of the targeted distance attack and Rangers get the most out of ranged weapons like bows.” also “In a party, the Ranger is often called upon to pull foes toward the group with a well-aimed arrow. Rangers combine effectively with any secondary profession that performs well at a distance.”. Not to mention “The Marksmanship attribute adds damage to basic bow attacks and is the base attribute for most bow skills.” And the in game description, “An agile and wily survivor, the Ranger specializes in ARCHERY, beast mastery, and attunement to nature” So with that being said their PRIMARY focus is being RANGED. Yes they can use the abilities of the natural world surrounding them, but they are still HUNTERS and RANGED and as such should be given Rifles due to the evolution of the world of Tyria. I’m not asking them to add a new weapon. I’m asking them to Give the Ranger an already conceived weapon in the game. I’m not asking them to change a WHOLE LOAD OF coding. Just more simply just add a little bit of coding into the Ranger to make them more versatile. I really don’t care if they take the Greatsword away as if they were really really really nature based they wouldn’t be wielding a HUGE CHUCK OF METAL! Because if ANYTHING doesn’t fit, its the Greatsword!
