Official state of skill lag and server optimizations

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’d like to create a central place for you all to get the current state of where we stand on optimizing the servers and relieving what most of you have come to know as “skill lag”.

Over the past several months we’ve had a small team working on ways to relieve some of the load from the game server while there are large concentrations of players. Most of the work thus far has gone pretty much unnoticed from the player’s perspective, but there have been pretty large steps made towards the issue. This continues to be a large and high priority issue for us so we can continue to make improvements to make this a thing of the past.

The various teams, or as we call internally “Feature Teams”, are now subject to performance reviews both client and server before they can ship. This is one of the many things we’ve put in place to stop the bleeding. Preventing further issues has been the main focus up to this point to ensure we aren’t introducing new issues and constantly cleaning up behind them. Now that we’re to a point where we’re confident that we’ve plugged the holes, larger strides to actually make noticeable optimizations are in the works.

I mentioned sometime last month that I’d like to be more transparent about what steps we’re taking to address the issue. To give you more of an insight of where we stand, we’re starting with taking the bull by the horns. We’ll be going through almost every skill in the game over the coming months and optimizing them one-by-one. This in itself will make an extremely large difference, that when that patch note comes through, expect a very different WvW experience.

I’m going to leave this thread open for discussion, but I urge you to be respectful of one another and keep things civil, otherwise I’ll be forced to lock it.

We Need More Gem Store Character Cosmetics

Since the game is funded almost solely through gem store purchases I think there could be a few more enticing things in the store for players to purchase.

The store already has multiple cosmetic items such as armor skins and actual character cosmetics like hair changes or body type changes, but i feel like its missing some things.

Exclusive emotes could be a really entertaining thing to add in. I know many players would enjoy having some extra flashy emotes they could perform with their characters while in groups or just hanging out with friends.

Of course emotes aren’t the only thing missing. I feel like character customization could go so much further.

Maybe Glowing Eyes or Subtle Player auras. Or even different animations for certain moves. For guardians perhaps instead of fire all their flame moves could have Light animations. And Necros could have different Pet skins they could purchase. Engineers could have specialized turrets. Just a few spur of the moment examples. From my experience in other games I’ve played one thing stands out above any other aspects of an MMO. The lengths players will go to in order to stand out and feel unique are immense. So this is definitely something I would enjoy seeing at some point in the game.

Like I said these are just examples. I would love to see more ideas on character personalization.

I would love to see a finisher that flashes your guild symbol over the enemy. Maybe make them unlockable via a guild upgrade, similar to the guild armorsmith/ weaponsmiths? Or purchased with guild commendations? I want my guild’s symbol to strike fear in the hearts of our enemies!

Throwing random ideas out there.

Does the MIGHT boon need to be adjusted to be stackable only up to.. say.. 5.. but the amount of power given doubled? This makes stacking might less of a ‘meta’ thing to do and easier for the common group to achieve, but lowers the max group dps.

I have been waiting for a discussion like this for the longest time, and I do hope Anet does make changes which makes other playstyles more welcomed in PVE.

I don’t think Zerker/Sin gear or stats should be nerfed or changed in anyway, so that the players who enjoy the high risk-high rewards type of gameplay can continue with what they love. If 5 glasscannons can dodge, employ evasion skills and know when to block at the right time, then more power to them. They should be granted the faster clear times for choosing such a strategy.

The problem lies in the fact that Healing Power, Vitality, and Toughness are so badly scaled they become a waste of stats. I believe instead of doing anything to affect Zerker/Sin stats, the defensive stats should be given a buff.

1. Double all Healing Power coefficients in PVE so that healing becomes viable. You don’t need a healer in GW2 to succeed but if someone chooses to have a healing playstyle, that player can actually heal and make a difference.

2. When healing become viable, health pool (via Vitality) and defense (via Toughness) become more significant. The reason why Vitality is useless now is mostly because healing is so lacklustre that no matter how much you have, without negating damage, a player would have to burn their heal skill and then get out of the danger zone for a while. With healing, players who invest in Vitality and Toughness can obviously spend a longer time fighting.

3. Remove “Defiant”, the laziest mechanic a developer can ever come up with. Allow interrupts to be a reliable way to prevent those big attacks, along with the blocks, reflects, and blinds. It takes skill and knowledge to know when to interrupt and “Defiant” just belittles control skills.

4. Make pushes, pulls, knockdowns, launches and similar skills draw aggro. I know as a player, nothing kittenes me more than getting knocked around by mobs, somehow I think they should feel the same way. By making control skills a “taunt”, players can actually save each other from being chased down and killed by mobs.

5. Remove the limit on condition stacks in PVE. I don’t think an explanation for this is needed since it’s been talked to death.

6. Make all mob auto-attacks do small damage but be more frequent. This will balance auto-attack damage out between those who choose to heal through it, those who choose to use skills to negate it, and those who have easy access to Vigor and can constantly dodge through it. More frequent and smaller attacks also mean that Toughness will actually be able to prevent damage and be useful.

7. Special attacks which employ control and/or inflict conditions should have cooldowns. Champs and above should have cleaves and aoes. Let purple boss mobs keep their big one shot abilities which players need to learn to avoid. These abilities must have a fair cooldown and be telegraphed.

Simply put, there is already a DPS meta, let’s diversify things by introducing a Healing meta, and a Control meta. The pros can continue with their Zerker/Sin runs, and others who want a change of pace can do other things.

And another thing, to make this work better, it would be good to allow player to save builds. So a group and players can switch between roles easily.

With the advent of the Ascended gear grind, this could well be a bad thing, depending on how they do it.

Currently, for PvE, if you have zerker Ascended, you’re all set. You only had to go through the unholy gear grind once. If they make changes so that you require another set of gear (through nerfs, through more “structure” bosses, for example) then people will not be happy.

It’s hard for Anet to win because of the situation they put themselves in. (They can increase the viability of other gear, but Anet’s MO is usually to nerf and nerf hard.)

There is room to improve PvE experience, without nerfing zerk players if they want to stick with that stuff.

- Remove One Shot mecanics and replace them by huge damage :
same for Zerk players who would die to this hit, if they avoid the strike = same experience for us; but the average player with a tankier set may survive a strike or two.

- Don’t increase bosses HP, but make enemy combat more dynamic, for example, more dodge / blocks usage, like recent foes around Nightmare Tower.
More challenging for everyone, does not change the damage done by Zerk players, but needs active gameplay to land the strike, instead of DPS it in close combat without a need for a brain.

I have to agree about the fact that zerker/sin meta is too strong. I also have to agree that nerfing (or buffing) gear is not the way to go. In fact I think the majority of the complains could be summarized in three points:

  • Defiant – One of the biggest problems that plagues the current meta. Defiant should have never been a complete invuln for CC for the duration of the stacks. It should have been a percentage reduction on CC abilities per stack (i.e. 4 stacks Defiant equals 80% reduced effectiveness of CC) or something similar that didn’t completely force a DPS mindset. There also needs to be a cooldown period after Defiant has been stripped before it can be gained again.
  • Condition Cap – The second biggest problem in the current meta. A condition cap essentially tells players that, “Hey, we’re gonna cap the damage you can do if you play this way.” That’s not cool. Either increase the stack-size on conditions (in PvE) to 100 or create a “condition overflow” mechanic so that anything over the cap is reduced in effectiveness, but not ignored.
  • Bulky Bosses – I understand the intent on higher HP pools for bosses, and even higher HP pools when scaled up. The problem is that this type of combat is pretty backwards. It further reinforces the zerker/sin meta because the bigger hits are more effective at peeling the HP than anything else. If anything, Defiant should work on damage much like I suggested earlier where it is reduced in effectiveness until the stacks are stripped.

I think by fixing these problems with similar solutions it would greatly improve the quality and diversity of the game. One of the biggest problems I’ve seen in the past with how the game is being handled is that players are being punished for playing [the meta] certain ways. That should never be the case.

Character Designs

So many of the hair issues for me would be fixed by simply binding the long, flowing ones who clip CLEAR THROUGH YOUR CHARACTER MODEL onto the back the way a few styles seem to have been done, it isn’t as pretty as they should be, but then again, it beats clipping issues.

Norn females have issues with shoulder armors… Clearly the skins wrap around something that probably looks a lot like a norn male. On females the shoulders sit WAY HIGH off the visible shoulder, and are frequently needlessly gigantic..item preview CoF light armor shoulders on norn female for one of the very worst if you don’t believe me…. for others the “stately” shoulders sit misplaced, the Norn T2 heavy shoulder (yes, 1 sided… asymmetry is another huge complaint i have with whoever designs their armors, they keep making the differences way too big).

As to Sylvari, the basic issue for me is that they took the concept art and corrupted it into some kind of ugly. From flowing leaves in place of hair, and smooth surfaces for skin (in the concept art) to some kind of twisted, twiggy mess… Lest we forget that the Sylvari female cultural armor replaces your body model with some stock model when you put it on (so if you wear it, body customization becomes a moot point anyway). More smooth leaves, more like Caithe and other concept arts from loading screens, frankly…and fewer weird twigs and twisted faces. Fixing the cultural armors to appear for chosen body type would be good too.

Funny thing is that I’m sure if someone necro’d up all my other gripe threads about armor/character designs since launch, they would all contain basically identical themes, if not the exact same gripes :P

I would like this to become a reality as much as you, but I highly doubt it’s going to happen. Even though they specifically said pre-release that dyes would be unlocked across your account, they later changed their minds for no discernible reason and today dyes are only unlocked on a per character basis.

If such an option were to ever make it’s way into the game, I’d bet you anything they would charge an arm and a leg for it.

edit: It appears ANet deleted all the older blog posts from before launch, but it’s quite easy to dig up anyway: http://pep-guild.guildlaunch.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5665524

“Once you unlock the color, it will be available across your entire account, not just the individual character.”

I know things change during development but the demoting of dyes from account-wide to per-character just wreaks of cash shop greed in my opinion.

Future Content- All Suggestions

So GW2 has been out for over a year and there are a lot of suggestions to improve the game. A lot of the posts here on the Suggestion forum is the same things. So I am going to compile a list of the most asked for changes that I have seen.

More Customization
Reasons:
This is an RPG that means players want to role play their characters. As it stands right now there are limited options for character appearances. The more personalization you have with your character the more you will enjoy playing them.

Suggestions:

  • More body types- example: a few fat options. Not everybody wants to be a model.
  • More Hair options- this includes facial hair. Bearded Ladies!?
  • More Faces/face modifications- ugly them up a bit! big noses, warts, scars, etc

New Race
Reasons:
Again this is more personalization options. more than 5 options would be great.

Suggestions:

  • Kodan
  • Dwarves
  • Tengu
  • Largos

New Weapons
Reasons:
There are many types of weapons that exist that are not ingame. adding more options will diversify the game and allow for more customization.

Suggestions:
2 hand.…………………….1 hand
Spear………………………..Spear
Great Axe………………….Javalin
Scythe………………………Sai
Pole Axe/ Halberd……….Parasol
Crossbow…………………..Sickle
Great Mace…………………Fist Weapons- claws, brass nuckles
Katana(greatsword)………Whip/Chain
Double Bladed Sword……..Flail
Naginata…………………….Nunchku

New Armor
Reasons:
There are many armor types in the game already but more is always better! While not necessarily a ‘type’ of armor, different skins for each type would be nice. Example: scale armor looks the same no matter what race is wearing it. Why would a charr and an asura wear identical armor? Would be nice if each race had its own appearance for armor types. And some female armor is pretty skimpy/not skimpy enough!

Suggestions:

  • Skin Options:
  • Have 2 different armor skin types to choose from (one that covers more, and another that reveals more)
  • Clean and grungy version, example is the CM dungeon armor, vendor is shiny while players is grungy. I would like the shiny version!
  • Basic armor types appear different depending on race that’s wearing it. Example: charr scale armor would be very hacked together looking, while Asura scale would be squares, and Sylvari scale would look like leaves.

New Maps
Reasons:
Many players have completed the map exploration and would like new areas to explore.

Suggestions:

  • Underground maps
  • Shiverpeaks
  • Crystal Desert
  • Elona

New Classes
Reasons:
More customization (see a theme here?) More than 8 classes would be nice. Although I personally don’t think his is necessary right now, I would like more options in the future. Another Heavy class would be nice.
Suggestions:

  • Monk
  • Ritualist
  • Paragon
  • Dark Knight type

Dragons
Reasons:
Everyone wants more dragons! They are what brought most of us into the game in the first place. Killing Zhaitan was so anticlimactic that I hope we get another shot at him. There is so much lore about the dragons and it feels like nothing is happening with them. They are the main threat to Tyria we should be actively searching for ways to defeat them!

Suggestions:

  • Bring back Zhaitan for one final battle!
  • Introduce Jormag, Primordus, or Kralkatorrik as the next challenge to overcome.

Living World
Reasons:
The current ‘living world’ doesn’t feel very alive. The 2 week release schedule is nice, but I think feels a bit rushed, and the content usually disappears after those 2 weeks. We want Permanent Content

Suggestions:

  • Each map has its own main ‘bad guy’ and they will take over the entire zone if players do not fight them off. Example: The centaurs will take over all of Gendarran Fields, killing the NPCs and contesting every WP so you must travel from another map to get there.
  • Achievements are based on taking back/defending forts and POI instead of just grinding out kills.
  • Dragons!

Mounts
Reasons:
Would be cool to ride something around to add yet more customization! Fighting wile mounted would add a whole new dynamic to the game.

Suggestions:

  • Faster Travel only?
  • Combat abilities? Equip as an Offhand weapon, whole new weapon set, or added skill bar for mount abilities.
  • Flying mounts- would need special maps
  • No mounts in PvP or WvW.
  • Race Specific
  • Class Specific

    Other Suggesions
Guild Halls- ANet has said this is planned
GvG- tournaments and such between guild would be nice
Guild Alliances- Having a larger pool to get help from would also be nice
Change Race/Order- I think you should NOT be able to chance race. if you don’t like the race you picked, delete them and make another. Changing the Order you chose would be helpful.

TL;DR
Go back and read it all.

Assuming you have 0 Laurels, 0 Gold, no dungeon tokens, no mats and you don’t play 5+ hours/day.
What would you do and how long would it take to you?

OK realistically, say you have only 1 hour per day to play. The fastest way I know of to make gold is with a champ train in Frostgorge. That would net me approx. 7g per hour. At that rate it would take me approx. 79 days to make 550g. Unless I got ridiculously lucky like a guildmate just did. He got Dawn as a drop on his 5th day of champ farming :-/ (I’m happy for him and yet disgusted that I’ve been farming there for months and the best drop I’ve gotten has netted me about 2.5g… d*mn you RNG!!).

Hi everyone!

I am a Guild Wars veteran and still enjoy the great material that ArenaNet produces. Looking back to the days of the original Guild Wars, a strong highlight of that series was the hands-on connection players had with the studio and the game. I am specifically referring to the “Design-a-Weapon” Contests that were held several times. I believe it was a great way to challenge the artistic players and make them feel part of the studio’s designing process.

Bringing back this popular event today would take the original basis and idealize it. With the improved modeling possibilities that is available through the Guild Wars 2 engine, the final fan designs can be fully brought out. This could, in fact, be a method to creating a new series of Ascended or Legendary Weapons. The chosen winners would receive in and out-of-game prizes, including the skin of their designed weapon mailed to their in-game account. That way they can enjoy using their own weapon right away before any other player. I believe this talented community would love to take part in this old tradition again.

Thank you for the consideration,

Frost

As you can see, the most beauitful, sexy, most awesome armor who have ever been made for Light armor is the ’Mesmer’s dress’ ( Look at the Mesmer’s profession Picture, the Purple dress, please look at the picture )
Also called as ‘Saucy’ dress or just human dress/Noble dress.
I’ve seen this armor/dress in the Guild Wars 2 Trailer as real players worn this armor set! Why haven’t this armor been released in public yet?! ( Check Picture to see a Picture of the trailer video. )
( Please, check the picture for seeing what kind of armor I am talking about )
I was so sad and disappointed when GW2-game was released and this armor wasn’t among with it. Kinda why I quitted for a while. ( Around Halloween’s patch till Southsun cave patch – I started to play again )
PLEASE release this armor to GW2.
Also, in GW2 wiki they wrote that ‘’Players can wear the same armor as most of the NPCs’’ – Yeah sure.. not this armor/dress who were in first place releasted in the Beta Trailer video.

Another unreleased Light armor set who also was in one of profession skill videos ‘’http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKyl8o4uF2U’’ is yet not released in GW2 aswell! ( See picture for armor Picture )

Make Achievement Armour Dyeable

in Suggestions

Hello,

Just a small suggestion here.
I currently roll with Tier 3 Heavy Human armour on my Guardian.
Its no surprise that I like to couple this with the Radiant Gloves gained through achievement points.
However the gloves have no dye options.
Let me be clear – I do not expect the glow to be dyeable, I understand that is part of the set and I have no desire to see it changed.

The problem is that the armour underneath the glow on the gloves is stuck on a silver-esque colour. I like to mix my colours up a lot and often dye the chainmail portion of Tier 3 black. However as I cannot do this to the gloves it means that I am stuck with a normal silver-looking coloured armour under the glow on my nice shiny gloves.

Would it be possible to add 1 dye slot to the Radiant Gloves so that we can dye the chainmail portion of them underneath the glow?

Thanks

Why one handed weapons have the same price as the two handed one ?
you have to spend twice more crafting materials (-> more time/gold) for dual wielding players, and if your weapon switch is also dual wielding…

Since weapon realse, i ve made only two ascended weapons (roaming -> no dragonite ore), hopefully, since 11/14/2012 i’ve decided that i’ll never grind for ascended so all my alts have exotic and i dont care about ascended at all.
In PvE, ascended makes easy a game witch is already easy….
In WvW, it confers a small advantage on ppl using it, but skill is more imporant than 5-10% stats

Ascended armor, well, never due to the low (boost/price) ratio.

Someone can explain me why now we have to get overly expansive gears for stats and really expansive gear for skin ?
Because before it was cheap stats on expansive skins. I thought it was a good idea…

but crafters will get an actual “do it yourself” experience and play the game, which is what most people like about making their own stuff, in the first place. Go, gather, craft. Not go, sit at tp for hours, craft.

I agree.

Imho the trading post, as it currently works, is poison for a lot of ideas in this game.

I cannot agree with this more. In the pursuit to have the model economy the tp has sort of castrated a lot of what makes this genre of game fun for a lot of adventurer type players. Evidently adventuring is acceptable collateral damage to having a robust trading environment in an adventuring game…go figure.

I also agree with this.

There are times where a given weapon woule be just fine, were it not for unmatching color scheme. For example let’s take ascended spire (the staff).
Type of insignia used may define the gem color of weapon, but that shaft remains extremely unimpressive pale gray color no matter what you do. I for one need it to be dark brown to match my necro’s color scheme, but nooooo. I can’t touch that:/

April Fools: "Mystic Toilet"

As we all know, many players jokingly refer to the Mystic Forge as the “Mystic Toilet” due to the fact that it often feels like you’re “flushing out” items when trying to, for example, acquire a precursor.

My idea: For next April Fools day, have the forge literally transform into a huge toilet (just like it changes appearance during Halloween/Wintersday)! It might be a bit weird, but I feel most players will get the joke (or be told by their guildies).
Additionally, have the forge make a “flushing sound” every time you use it. Would be quite hilarious, I imagine.

Playing for the inflationary compensation

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Noerknhar.3826

Noerknhar.3826

Inflation is a big deal in GW2 as it destroys the chance of “not so active” players to ever achieve something great. Of course, hard work should be rewarded and legendaries should never be for free or easy to acquire. But have you seen precursor prices? Don’t get me wrong, I wear a full T3-cultural armor, have nearly every color in game and a 150g staff skin etc. I’m fine, I totally am. But have you ever thought about why precursor prices and basicly all other prices are going up and up? It’s called inflation – your money is losing worth every single day. And this inflation is based on exploiting and botters.

Let’s have a look at a casual normal player spending 2-3hours per day on GW2. If he’s doing some instances and/or fractals, he might get up to 5-6g per day (let’s not talk about how boring instances and/or fractals are in the long term). By having a look on the prices and how they evolve, that’s no earnings. This player is playing for the inflationary compensation. He’ll nearly never be able to get a legendary if he doesn’t exploit.

ArenaNet, why don’t you ban those precursor-lvl65-grawl-exploiters? Why don’t you delete those items? Why don’t you bind legendaries on account? Why don’t you do something about the market you created and that’s falling into pieces?

If you don’t care about inflation and such, I’m fine. But if you do, do something before it’s to late – time’s running.

This is not a rage but my opinion. It will be constructive so you can add your but please don’t use it for rage.

Since the start I had a major respect for people in ANet.
Especially when they for a year gave us really great skins and items in gem store. Everything was fresh, new and it felt they are worth the time you invested to make them.

I felt even greater when you started giving people some free stuff at Dragon Bash.
You never forced anyone to any thing,. but you said yours thank you with a little gifts for those of us who supported the game and bought gems from you instead of supporting thief’s sites that run bots and sell gold.
THAT WAS AWESOME. I really, really felt being respected by you.

Suddenly it changed.
All started when you gave us really basically remade exiting skins (I won’t complain about cultural armors cause I think the idea about them is stupid anyway).
I said to myself “Something is wrong. I feel like ANet starts to earning money with low costs.”. So I decided that for even my own rules I will nor buy ant remake that you offer. Simply because I feel like it’s a money grab and I hate that more than anything.

But the second step made me to write about it.
Making people who support the game and gather those special minis (fortunately I’m not one of them, but still…) to buy 4k gems in order to get 1 mini that most likely they miss is like kicking someone below his belt.

REALLY?? How could you do it?
I feel like in a month you have fallen from the most respectful game/studio/people I know to the bottom of market pit.

I have only one more things to say:
PLEASE STOP IT. For me and probably some other people that starts to ruin our fun of playing and opinion about you for sure. I still want to feel being respected by you…

What if you could sell them? Thus complimentary to other forms of acquisition?

Chris

I have a friend.

A month ago, he said on TeamSpeak.
I had dusk drop for me last night.
Really, you got a precursor?
Yeh, this is the first time I had one that was worth a lot dropping.
…. You mean you have had multiple precursor drops?
Yeh, but this is the best one.

A week ago, he said on TeamSpeak:
Sapling. Guess what dropped.
What?
No, no guess.
Really… you got another precursor?
Yeh, but not dusk this time.
How many precursor drops have you had in total by now.
7 no … 8.

That is RNG. That makes some people very rich.
I would prefer having several ways of working towards ascended items. Why can’t I be rewarded for doing the same things as another player? Why can’t I work towards my ascended items by killing Tequatl etc.?

Why can’t there be more reliable ways to work towards them?
Having them not account bound would be a very nice start.
Having them sold on the TP could free me from the burden of crafting.

I would still love to see more options though. I would love to be able to obtain them reliably by playing several areas of the game.
What if a certain amount of fractal relics could be used?
What if Tequatl dropped ascended tokens and when you had x amount you could buy one of his unique ascended weapons?
What if I was a WvW player? Would I ever get enough money to buy them off the TP?

I am sure there are many other and even better options, but this is what I could think of for now.

I don’t know as for others but for me vertical progression has one plus – the feeling of power! To see your character trounces the challenges, how one fart sets half the map flying, muahahahah!
It does however have nasty sideeffects of anything that is not endgame (gear, maps, skills) becoming “very temporary” until the end game part which becomes game itself.

Genius asura level idea:
Give the feeling of power to skilled players! But not with flat stats, but battle mechanic and animations!

  • breakdown for veterans/elites - if they can’t land enough damage on a player or group of players during a certain time they start to panic taking more damage, or maybe even self-fearing and trying to make a break for it!
  • more brutal animations - animations add a lot to the feeling of power. Now take warrior’s 2h hammer for example. When you see him use it it’s BRUTAL! When i see my guardian use it it’s like…oh..he did a swing..wow… Especially “banish” skill should have far more vigorous, fast, PAINFUL swing animation!

I fully understand the great benefits of skill and not stat based combat – all maps useful, no player shunned cause he doesn’t have that latest patch sword etc. But i still wanna know that when i willl enter orr with my necro and i will play it right, i will feel like death incarnate and those sorry risen will know the business end of that feeling!

PROGRESSION IN BEING SPECIAL

I have to add that making things like legendaries buyable and madeable by all tradeable items is kinda very bad for any progression towards showing off some skills and feeling like some kind of veteran or champion.

At first dungeon armors meant something, you had to be expirienced and to hard stuff but they quickly lost that except for Arach armor, but it also faded in time.
Legendaries meant something on the start, now it’s only money grind or being lucky. People who play only or mostly on TP have them easily.

Could it be possible… Well it is possible, maybe would you consider making things like legendaries madeable only by effort and hard work instead of playing TP and mindless grinding?

There is just no progression in feeling special.
If you would have to make 100 charged quarts, every path in every dungeon 3-4 times (spacial tokens for each path or achievement), use all those always BTA crafting items like all obsidian refined materials and raw ecto refined materials, maybe some kind of tokens for making living stories, laurels, guild commendations, fractal relics, gifts of explorations, maybe some special quests (like you are planing for precursor hunt – data mined source).

It would really force people who want to stand out make some real effort with challenges not only time consumption effort.
I loved the system in tribulation SAB that you had to redo that hard experience and you could show of with your skins. This kinda should fit legendaries – how they are made and all that. Making them all tied by resources on TP or buying them from TP kinda killed the idea in the first place.

Now when I see someone with legendary and all I see is someone who got lucky at the start of GW2 or farmed gold by any means.
That’s not the feeling that I should have.
