You’re completely off based about why GW2 isn’t a bigger #esport than it already is. Mobas and CS:GO are way less complicated games to play as far as skill goes. Anet would need sponsors and better promotion and ways to nurture the competitive tournaments for even bigger rewards than WTS.
If Anet was capable of hosting million dollar tournies you would see teams come out of the woodworks and new faces.
No. I wreck power necros all the time, I have 0 issues with rangers/necros/turret engis. In fact, I have no problem facing any class as a cele engi except possibly condi rangers. However, don’t overthink this too much. I’ll do some baby step explanation for you sir.
Necro takes no skill. Rangers take no skill. Turret engis take no skill. Yet they are all effective in solo q/team q because again…they take no skill but have very high reward. It is ANNOYING to deal with, Extremley over used by the player base, and extrmley frustrating for anyone who wants to be part of the PvP scene.
Take a minute and think about it. The reason we don’t have a proper leaderboard system isn’t because it is hard to make one but it is because there is a small player base in the PvP community. You can’t blame Anet for tryin to make a leaderboard but you can blame them for giving bad players really easy classes to play and have a very high reward and are extrmley annoying to fight and hence make the community extrmley toxic..as I am right now. I used to play gw2 on a daily basis at least 2-3 hours a day..Now I haven’t even bothered to log on for a good 4 days simply because it is a pain to Solo q, a pain to team q, and even more of a pain to wait in heart of the mists for 8 minutes just to match up against 2 turret engis , 1 power necro, 1 power ranger, and a shout warrior over and over again only to die to random procs or players who are absoultley doin nothin but summoning turrets.
tl;dr: If you are tryin to tell me to learn to play then please don’t coz i already did and I pretty much know how to deal with each of the classes I mentioned. IP is an issue, but it has a counter. Spinal shivers, power ranger + air and fire, turret engi in general…there are counters as well…however…the skill required to play these classes… close to 0.
Anet needs to reward SKILLED gameplay, or this is NOT esports, but a complete and an utterly sad joke.
You are being subjective, not objective.
Somewhere you have conflated “skill” in mmos with simply mashing buttons in an intelligent manner to use your skills. When skill level goes deeper than that. Mechanics are probably only 35% of what it takes to be great in conquest mode. Map awareness, positioning and rotation skills are more important in my views. You can add communication skills if you are running with a team on that list too.
When you say Necros and Power rangers are easy to play because procs it’s only a part of the story. It’s ezpz to just train down either of those classes, and it takes those players concentrating on what they’re doing to not just become farmbait. Any ranger and necro who just mindlessly tries to pewpew usually has a bad day when they encounter other classes played by players with greater skill levels. There’s some map mechanics where rangers can become abusive, sure. But nothing a thief or other class can’t fix usually.
I don’t find necros and rangers to just be brainless classes. Mechanically neither one of them may be as sophisticated as engineer or elementalist. But all MMOs have classes that are easier or harder to play than other classes.
tl;dr
Be less biased in your ability to perceive “skill”. If you’re not enjoying the meta, take a break as you say are doing currently. Nothing wrong with that at all.
take a break and play something else every once in a while…it works wonders. just back from a 4 month break (minus the occasional login to get the free LS episodes)…its fun again and i have new content to play. you forget how good/smooth the combat is and some of the other nice details of the game you get jaded to after a while of playing.
pretty sure i’m going to play this way from now on….a few months at a time with breaks of a few months. you feel less possessive/invested, and thus less frustrated.
MARA (EU) Gunnar’s Hold
How often do you look at it?
I love statistics and I’ll happily take all that I can get. The death breakdown we are provided in pvp is fantastic but I seldom look at it as I’m usually too engrossed in the match to care why I died. I feel that after making the death breakdown a click-able action instead of popping up in your face, it has been forgotton.
It’s such a great tool that I’m wondering if there could be a better way to promote it. Perhaps we could incorporate it into pve and wvw, or allow us to see each death breakdown after the match to look back on what happened?
It’s a great tool I’d love to see it used more. As it is now, it kind of feels like wasted code
Looks like a massive timesink and not so much as “fun”
I hope I don’t get flack for this (I love ya Anet!)… but let’s keep it real…
OMG the casters, not pointing on ROM stealing chief on forest, not even reacting to tage using shelter to completely negate the nade spam in choke point during the last game, come on ….
Yeah. I think the only reason you don’t see other people pointing this out is most people are used to the bad shoutcasting. I really wish someone stepped up and took it more seriously. It would make this game much more watchable in tournaments.
It’s just so strange how the shoutcasters literally never call out anything that happens in the actual fights. They didn’t say a word while Abjured was getting wiped off-point. Instead, they just call out things that everyone can see on the minimap or health bars, which don’t need to be clarified for viewers.
A lot of this has to do with the way Anet’s protocol works. They can’t just talk about anything.
We all know how much goes on in TPvP. They have to keep it generic and simple for those who either never played the game, or is new to it like most PvE players. People may not know about class specific skills too.
When there were big plays, we felt that through the shoutcasters. I thought they did a great job.

Huge congrats to oRNG. First 3 games were some really fun games despite them being so frustrating when losing by so few points. We had lost moral as a team by the 4th unfortunately.
Tage 100% deserved the MVP too. He’s not the greatest english speaker but he was super awesome the little he did speak to me. And of course likely the best guardian GW2 has seen.
Anyways, congrats again oRNG!

Thank you
It just seems that whenever at the start of the match ppl start talking in great detail on what to do , it almost always never work out. I’m almost prepared to lose when that happens esp. when you get some guy who is all preachy and telling people what they ‘should’ do. 9/10 times we lose and that one guy start raging. Some of my best matches are nice silent ones, ppl know what their doing, no one kittening no one yelling. If any chatting at all it would be joking around about names or outfits and a few gg at the end. Just saying..
I mostly solo que as well and ill share what i do. I run to far if im the only one to do so and since i win a majority of of 1 vs 1 i either take the point or they have 2 people come to it to stop me. If someone else runs far i run straight to mid and i hold that.
If your team caps 2 quickly look at your mini map and check to see who are runners(people who dont say between the 2 points to defend)Youll get people who run to the gate/monster/ stillness etc. You need to make sure you either stay on cap point if you dont have great mobility or stay between the 2 to try and hold both.
You will never get the high score this way but you will win more of your matches. You will occasionally get some idiot who blames you for the loss and your low score but this is how i deal with solo ques. My goal in solo ques are 50% win and when i get good team mates its around 70%. Once you adjust your playing stayle let everyone know if there was a difference or if you notcied anything different.
Taunts have no place in the guild wars combat system. It is an overused, ill-conceived status that undermines the comprehensive design of combat. Such an effect is no greater than a telekenetic lockdown on an entity; this is not a good thing. This kind of effect results in an oversimplified and unexplainable phenomenon, specifically in this case a player losing total control over their various faculties. For anything less than total mind control, my character should not become a simpleton that has no cognitive ability.
Taunt should be fine as long as it isn’t spammable. Stability and Stun breaks will still work. Though this is the sPvP section, Taunts are kinda needed as some sort of aggro. Like for PvE there was no way to have a certain aggro, but this game has no trinity so it wouldn’t’ matter too much. For sPvP, it’s a good way to peel for your team other than just cross heals and soft cc.
If taunt is a long duration cc it will be bad. Long duration cc is bad.

Think of Courtyard as the Stronghold right now in the Unranked queue. Normally, you’d have a Conquest build, but if it gets picked, you have to change your build under two minutes just to be competent in team deathmatch. So imagine having three game modes—you would need to remember three types of builds for each just in case.
I’m up for Stronghold in same queue IF…

Dunno I would have prefered seing TCG win aswell and I think they deserved it more but why the kitten are you complaining about counter comping? You want to tell me you wouldn’t let people from your team that multiclass switch their class to adjust so you can win money?
They switched their comp after losing 3 times in the same tournament and only won once they had switched their comp. I wouldn’t have been as annoyed if they had decided a counter comp before their first match vs TCG and stuck with that, but switching as a last ditch effort after losing 3 matches just seems like a really low blow.

As ATI hater
ATI is no longer. AMD bought ATI and now produce their GPUs. So, yeah. Shows how much you know!
It USED to have really bad optimalization back 1.5year ago but now its really fine. At least for everyone I know.
Listen to this (1 month ago):
So even an overclocked 4790k with GTX770 is reportedly getting 40-60 fps, down to 7-11 at times! And I’ve seen other people saying similar things.
That processor is practically the best single-threaded one money can buy in 2015.
I was looking at getting one for Heart of Thorns, but if I don’t get >60fps at all times with the greatest processor money can buy, there’s a problem with the game.
Don’t give me this bs that “the game’s fine afaik”, you’re not helping anyone. We need Anet to get on this and improve the game for the sake of everyone.

i know we have guild banners, and back items but capes are so cool. I know the problem was the clipping with the chars but they should have a shoulder cape or something different and the rest 85% of the players should have chance to get a cape. I know its a long shot but some of us would really like to have capes back in Tyria.
I tend to agree. There are only a handful of leg armors that I use specifically for this reason. More pant-like heavy leggings need to be introduced.

Don’t know if it’s just me, but I really dislike the clunky big sword models that look more like clubs than swords. I really prefer swords that look like swords. ( Don’t know if I’m in the minority or not with this.)
There are a few nice models in the game such as “infinite light” and “fractal sword skin”, however both are rare skins and extremely hard to obtain.
I just wanted to put in the suggestion of a few more “thin sword like” models for the future!
Thanks for reading.

Having a GvG with 5v5 is already excluding a huge population that doesn’t do spvp as it is because of the small team sizes.
It’s completly opposite. Requiring low numbers mean: ANY Guild can compete, when requiring larger numbers would exclude majority of small and medium sized Guilds.
Having spvp gear and stats is another reason a lot of people don’t play that game mode. Most of the wvw pop likes to min max their gear which can’t be done in spvp.
You’re wrong. Having sPvP gear and stats it’s reason why sPvP has any sense. More or less gear overall in GW2 isn’t balanced, thats why it got limited in sPvP… to make game more balanced and exclude some PvE stuff from PvP.
There are more reasons than this but I’m off to work.
There is no single reason. You just believe GW1 GvG will fail, when it was the thing that made GW1 so succesful in PvP and it was also the reason why many of us bought GW2 and finally it will be implemented…
Hope they will allow a setting to change between spvp rules or wvw rules
I hope they won’t. WvW is horrible and unbalanced sandbox, which unlike sPvP has nothing with competition.

My *guess* on release date - with "evidence"
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Well all I know is they can’t wait too long. The expansion continues the story of Living World S2. If they wait a whole year to release nobody will know about that anymore.
Considering the breaks we had in S2 my first guess was around May/June but somehow that feels really early. I’m not sure if they progressed that far in the development.
(edited by Nanashi.6297)
Yknow, i was looking back at the original post-Living Story trailer. And I realized that there was really no reason why we could have been told this was an expansion from the beginning.
This wasn’t some strange take on the expansion model that would need proper explanation. It was simply an expansion pack. No real reason to be so secretive about it. All it did was make people argue over what the thing was. People weren’t even convinced it was an expansion.
Why do that?
And I get this suspicion that there’s a bit too much secretiveness for their own good. Some misguided attempt at mystique?
Now we have information only available in interviews, such as only one specialization being available at launch, without any assurances or idea of timeframe for when these things will be expanded.
A good example is the supposed reveal that the “spear” rytlock was using in the trailer was just a staff that the artists messed around with. That doesn’t add mystique. That just confuses people.
Key information such as this being a retail release or whether we need this expansion for certain content were buried in the FAQs, when they should be key parts of the value proposition of the expansion.
Things like specializations or masteries or new areas being revealed over time are things that can certainly be rolled out over time, like a fighting game reveals characters over time.
But we don’t really even know the basics. With the case of specialization, with only one specialization supposedly available, that big selling point may not even figure into people’s builds. This MAY be the framework for new specializations rolled out over LS updates, but we just don’t know.
I’m still excited for aspects for this expansion, but for now, there’s a lot of confusion that may not be warranted for the sake of secrecy.
Hi guys,
I’m a Senior UX UI designer and I’ve been playing GW2 since the betas, with long breaks in-between and since I’ve spent quite a lot of hours with this game, I’ve noticed some flaws in the games UX (user experience) and thus I decided to tackle it in order to diversify my portfolio. This lead me to redesigning some of the in-game UI’s & the official website.
About the project
The project started last summer, as I was redesigning my portfolio website, I wanted to take a break from my regular website design so I started redesigning the GW2 official website, since I missed working on a more creative & artsy website. This last holiday season I had a few days free so I decided to continue this project and tackle the in-game UI’s since I wasn’t really a fan of how some things were currently done.
What I’ve redesigned
- Looking for Group Panel & the related tabs
- Character Panel
- Guild Tab
- The Story Journal & the related tabs
- Created a Lore Journal & related tabs
The Entire Design in PDF format – Horizontal layout
- Filesize: 4mb
- Pages: 28 pages
- LINK: http://bit.ly/gw2-pdf
The Entire Design in JPG format – Vertical layout
- Filesize: 7mb
- Resolution: 25.000px vertical
- LINK: http://bit.ly/gw2-ux-redesign
Note
There are a lot of explanations that point out to different things & the reason behind my design decisions. The entire project took roughly 2-3 weeks, so It could be better, but unfortunately I don’t have access to actual game or player data and I kinda ran out of free time.
Hope you enjoy.
UPDATE:
Since some of you wanted to see how this would look in-game, I made a quick in-game prototype:

Yes it’s real I can confirm seeing it in the ESL finals chat. It’s sad to see but at the same time illustrates why it’s important for the developers to communicate with us. Ele has a better win ratio vs. Necro in the current meta for example.
