If you want the absolute furthest range: LB Ranger with Eagle Eye/Grenadier Engis/Staff Necros/Staff Ele with Blasting Staff. All can —directly or indirectly, via blast radii-- hit upwards of 1200 units away. All can also nuke the living bejeezus out of an area whilst doing so.
For pinpoint targeting at 1200 units, GS Mesmer. All Hail Spatial Surge! Or perhaps Rifle Warrior … haven’t futzed around with that one much.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
An Ele or Guard has the absolute best shot of shaking off Torment, especially from Mesmers (1 move, on the Profession’s crappiest Weapon, that requires you to attack while they’re blocking). Both you and Guards have passive and active methods of dropping Conditions. Past that, Superior Hoelbrak or Melandru + Lemongrass absolutely shreds Condition Duration. As for having enough Vitality to shrug off Conditions: Try mixing some Magi EQ in. Those are Vit/Prec/Healing, statwise.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
C’mon, ANet – this kitten filter is getting a bit out of hand. Since when is a 4-letter word, beginning with “H” and ending with “D” (The opposite of “soft”) a “naughty” word? Might we tweak the system to recognize bypass attempts and inflection of text somewhat?
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Note that Mesmer/Engi/Ranger Stealth options are in a completely different league than that of Thieves. With Mesmer being the game’s 2nd “best” Stealth operative, Mesmer Stealth doesn’t stack with itself, like Thief’s can. Reasonable mods to Stealth could include one of the following concepts:
- Revealed triggering on missed attacks. This would be a faster fix, and most Stealth players tend to be a bit smarter on their positioning, as is.
- No form of Stealth stacking duration with others. This would force a bit more tactical usage of the ability. However, considering how much Thieves gain from Stealth and associated Traits, there’d need to be a commensurate boost in their defensive effiency. Otherwise, by “fixing” Stealth, you effectively nerf an entire Traitline and other linked Traits.
- This is the code-nightmare one: Retweak Stealth to operate more like Predator camouflage. Instead of true Invisibility, it would then make it harder to see the Stealth-User. Correspondingly, we could (potentially) then apply a certain amount to their defense as an “Evasion/Miss Chance” percentage. It would also avoid the problems inherent in my second theory.
This was the issue with the increased “Revealed” timer. That did frackall to fix the actual “issues” of Stealth in this game, tbh.

I love the sarcasm here, but don’t give ANet naughty ideas, please.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Hmmmph. Sounds like those Mesmer players pussed out. As much as I think ANet’s nerfhammer is:
- PvPer fuelled
- Random as hell
- Unneeded in many cases.
I’m still running my Mesmer most of the time … unless I’m levelling an alt. Now, if we can get our Condition weaponry put proper, and a couple of the more ridiculous nerfs
(Hi, Blinding Befuddlement!) addressed, we’re back to doing well enough. Indeed, I’m surprised none of the TPvP Mesmers went for a full Melandru set/Mender’s Purity/Arc-Thievery spread. It’d help versus the current meta being Condition-heavy.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
It’s about time. Thanks a lot, Devs – this makes things a lot easier for those of us with an Alt Fetish.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Try it with Kylia’s Triforce Build. That might have hella fun results …
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
No nerfs, yet. Remember, ANet tends to do their “big” changes towards the end of the month. Keep yer fingers crossed, I bleeding sure will.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
They’re as afraid of Fast Mesmers as horror movie characters are of Running Zombies.
’Nuff said.

So I think its safe to say many on AR have come to the conclusion that certain members of SF and FC are both spineless, I’m sure your nice folks but spineless none the less. Try hitting one another, now I realize this means you may have to actually fight somewhat equal numbers and try your hardest not to run in terror, but why not give it a try, you might just surprise yourselves and realize there is more then #1 to mash.
We on AR do take it as a compliment that you find all 20 of us such a threat and all though, don’t get me wrong. Its a shame certain AR members believe FC needs SF to carry them this much.
There. Someone had to fix your unnecessary generalizations. Be assured, there are those of us who will fight anyone ANet sics on our server. SF, you, freaking bloody overpopulated DH, who-the-hells-ever. With that said: please bring it, I require entertainment.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
I’d say, barring some logical skill-fixes and improved Pet AI/Customisation … Ranger viability is high-end-of-medium. There are some really fun and dangerous builds floating around, but the class mechanic is a double-edged sword. As others have mentioned before, the basis of DPS being split between Ranger/Pet does cut down on straight Power builds somewhat. Condition can work very well, as can BM or Spirit bunkers.
Failing the Great Pet Fix: I wonder if ANet’d be amenable to modifying the % of DPS that Pets count for. Say: if it’s currently 40%, perhaps 25-33% might help build viability a tad? Also, for melee Rangers, that darn Sword AA chain needs unrooted. Yesterday.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
QFT. As if it weren’t bad enough that certain classes tend to have lowered effiency in various aspects of the overall game (PvP Warriors/Thieves in dungeons, for example),
they continue to make the same mistakes in balancing things out. Now, I realise that codebase is a tricky lil bugger, and one “fix” can easily break or “nerf” something else, but this just indicates a need for two things that many players have requested for months:
- A proper ability/skill split between T/SPvP and PvE/WvW
- A freaking Public Test Realm, so as to check changes before they go live.
Honestly, until at least one of those things is done, we’re all going to eat regular Nerfbat. Well, most of us … seems Guardian keeps getting fixes and buffs, tbh.
And Thieves … well, what ANet needs to mod on ‘em is the exact opposite of what they’ve generally done.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Heh. Welcome to the World of Those What Main Mesmers, ShadowPuppet. I’ve had a certain … grudge against that “small percentage of a playerbase” for months. It’s truly ridiculous, how much pull on game balance that group gets. Meanwhile, the crap they whinge about is mainly an issue only in PvP’s small-scale maps, or is only problematic due to the difference in EQ loadouts.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
And here I thought Pet AI was Nerf-A-Plenty. Hell, the only “Pets” that seem to do the job proper are Phantasms, and those die:
- When spat upon
- As soon as the target dies.
I hope it’s the stacking of traited/untraited spirits that’s eating a beatdown. If anything, Ranger still needs a bit more buffing.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
A very interesting concept. The only issue I could see is less direct balance, and more linked to ANet’s obsession with making GW2 the next big “Esport.” As such, any skill addition or variation would -most likely- be measured by how easy it is for a random PvPer to recognize. This, unfortunately would then limit skills to being either:
- Flashy as hell
- Slow
- Colour-coordinated per class.
With that in mind, if we did luck out and gain skill variants, it’d probably only be 1-2 per weapon, so they could keep ’em easy-to-read. OTOH, if we could simply convince the Devs entire to relax a bit on that desire of theirs, it could make the whole game a good deal more interesting, perhaps. (Hell, most of the Gem buys are logically from PvE/WvW players as is. At least if overall population = cash shopping)
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
More like stay in Ferg, kitten it all. Not everyone here is some sort of clueless mook or hater. I’m also getting real bloody SICK of losing manpower faster than hemophiliacs lose blood.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Hmmph. For all we know, it’s an Amidala/Padme thing anyway … the Six know, Anise dresses more like a Queen than the “Queen” does. Looks far more like a Mesmer, too.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
I was hoping for AR again. Good.
But, Big Bro – get yer ginormous population outta my fun
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
selan:
You forgot: strangled, skinned, devoured, spat it back up, ate it again, chewed it like cud, crapped it out, burned it, scattered the ashes, and had a massive laughing “O”.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Don’t be so dramatic. If they didn’t care about pve there wouldn’t so many events popping up every few weeks. PvP and WvW don’t get nearly as much focus as pve. We just need to wait for the balance to be different between pve and pvp and things will start to be nicer for everyone.
Dramatic or not, it’s pretty much a given fact – considering where half the nerfs spawn from – that they do kiss the living Niflheim outta PvP’s collective arsecheeks. Ironic, when:
- PvP is -by far- the least populated game mode.
and … - Judging from the changes in the meta, and what certain of the top PvPers use in a scrap (i.e. Xeph swapping out from Mesmer to -IIRC- S/D Thief), those nerfs then
screw folk outta playing the way they’d like to.
What we need, for all Professions, is bloody simple:
Split skills/abilities between PvE and PvP. There, less need for heavy-handed nerfing, yes?
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
wow, thats the largest lead I’ve ever seen(not that Ive seen much)
Not quite. In the olden days, we Fergs had to contend with Kaineng and their 660 PPT
runs. However, you lot are still whipping massive behind. Don’t take it personally when I say that I hope the lot of you get stuck with servers of similar population in future.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
As long as it’s a reasonable (say 120-240 units) PBAoE, that wouldn’t be terribly OP. Any Profession has ways around that, but it’d save yer behind from stomps or mobiles.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Burning (or short-ranged pushback) on Body Shot. Directional Evade on Unload. Make Ricochet either:
- 100%
or… - 50% for 1st bounce, then 25% for a second.
This should then cement P/P as a solid ranged option.

Another question is: do Norn possess abnormal durability/regenerative ability to go along with their strength? If so, then a single Charr’d only win by fighting like a proper feline. Namely, going all Ash Legion skulker, and beheading said Norn from behind.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Bwahahahaha! Not to mention, the frigging Balrog would’ve just got his Clone.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
I typically keep one of each Bow type, then S/D for melee. I’ll go heavy SB if I’m playing trap/Condition, LB for Zergs/Shout & Signet work. The only issue with Bows – nay, range in general – is ANet’s coding of ranged damage being < melee.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
I’m working towards a variant of this one:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Introducing-the-Phantom-Catmaster/first
Not at the full recommended spec, but I can say that the overall skill/attack flow still seems to work with the recent patches, gimme 35 levels, and I’ll be able to see how nasty it really is.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Frankly, Ranger’d be fine if ANet finally unroots the bloody Sword chain. C’mon, guys … yer wrecking my S/D Murder Ballet, here. Other than that, I’d have to support the calls for (eventual) MH Whip or Torch. Both could provide interesting Combo Field/Finisher setups if done right.
Let alone the option of Staff for more of a “Nature Magic” bit. Could come with AoE damage/CC sets. Theme it around plant metaphors.

Whatever – I’m one of the main people what wants some other poor Profession to suffer The Curse of Portal. C’mon, Devs – hand that to Necro and/or Engi already, it can actually be done in a logical way for either of ‘em. Let someone else go through it, for kitten’s sake. And then, I want bug-fixing and polish … make ScepTorch less of a bloody joke, amongst other logical fixes.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Question: Can other classes pop an invulnerability skill to survive a fall?
No, thankfully. Which is why cliffs were considered the necro’s only escape mechanism.
Still are if you have an unused Spectral Walk on your bar.
Had a fractal where a guy got pushed over the edge with hammer and i popped spectral walk used DS to soak the fall dmg pickup hammer and teleport back up…………..never again :<.
They prolly working on a spectral walk fix right now though
thing is , it would have to be a “fix” that applies to mesmers portal , in essence it functiosn in the same manner , jsut for personal use only. not as much distance though. so if thats the case memsers better be looking forward to that “fix” as well…
Take it from a Mesmer main. We already expect shenanigans. We always do.
But, yes – DS damage intake being fixed is good, but the overflow business is hella problematic. With that in mind, there needs to be some method of CC avoidance/escape on Necromancers.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
I like my Thief-coats a little too much to swap out for platemail. Not to mention, it’d not fix:
- lowball Health
- minimal defensive Boons.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Heh. I’d agree with magom’s comment RE: design. However, I still break out P/P on fools, or S/P. Both are extremely fun with full-evasion builds/judicious Shadowstepping.
And yes, the Interrupts/Blinds are pure face-melt.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
I’d call Kyoko the Mesmer, because she actually had enchantment powers.
Not sure what to call Homu, maybe Necromancer because she tries really hard, but just can’t accomplish her main goal.
Sayaka warrior obviously
Mami I’d go with elementalist since she’s a long range burst attacker.
Madoka Ranger, since her wish was to save a cat. Guardian could work too.
Actually, the reason I mentioned Homura as Mesmer is due to her specific magicks (teleportation/time control). When one adds in her choice in weapons, she’s actually more of a Mes-gineer … frigging gun-bunny.
Incubators, of course, are those nerf-happy Devs.
Kyoko’s a tricked-out Evasion Thief with Land-Spear. Jumps around enough to be one.
Mami’s a definite Engi.
Sayaka could either be a Zerker-stance Warr, or a Mad Deeps Guard. Probably Guard, when one considers the nature of her wish.
Madoka … darned good question. The Bow would lead towards Ranger, but her sheer potency would half scream Ele.

Ain’t that the frigging truth? Every thing I run at 80’s eaten an arseload of nerfs (except the Thief, for the most part). I still play ‘em all. Other 80s: Any but Warrior
I’ve run 0/0/30/10/30 and 0/0/20/20/30 sets before. It can work, but I’d definitely suggest Illusionary Persona, yer losing out on a lot of possible clonegen/defense with either of those specs. 0/0/30/20/20, with CI/MP/WF/CC(or MR) could also work, I would think. Especially since yer pretty much mainlining Staff in most condi builds. IIRC, you’ll still stack around 2/3 the Bleeds of a 15+ Dueling spec, due to WoC proc-logic.
Although, I’ve not run any of those 3 specs in months. You might want to test them out, to see how they work in the current game.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior

I can’t object. Getting one’s eyes pecked the [REDACTED] out, has gotta suck. Definitely Blind … no clue if that alone would be enough.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
Let’s get sneaky and creative:
An idea I mentioned in passing some time ago, was to modify DS to either absorb or repel incoming Conditions. It’d probably be a Trait, and possess a reasonable (no, not freaking 90-120 sec) ICD, so as to not go terribly overboard. This would at least help Necros with crapola like being chain-stunned/knocked around as much.
Another logical change might be to allow Boons to exist while within the DS state.
Otherwise, I agree that Terror wasn’t the issue that needed a looksee, it was the combo of Terror/Dhuumfire. Not to mention, adding the damage overflow to DS not only penalizes Necros for the funny “fall trick,” it also screws up burst mitigation to a
more-than-fair degree

Correct. True manliness is shown in the size of his beer.
But who needs hand for that anyways?

A much better way to do it is to have a single trait like the Engineer’s Elite trait. A single trait which improves a single thing about every elite skill. If you want slightly better elites select it, if not, don’t.
This is a fair point, and a good question. Why does Mesmer lack an “Elite Enhancer” Trait?
Why does any Prof, for that matter?
