Huh, a quick list for you:

Trait’s aren’t give you stat points anymore
Burn stacks in intensity
Burn builds are almost equal to the power builds
No more two-handed mastery
Cons are ground targeted by baseline
Loads of traits got merged (shout, meditation, consecration, etc… there are many)
Shield is still subpar

I hate:

Shield
Signet elite cast time
Glacial heart position in the trait tree

I love:

Basically the rest of the changes! Some things need balancing (multiple-burn abilities, D/D eles and mesmers) but I’m happy with the changes 90+%… 9/10 balance patch

The strange thing is that I ran almost exactly this build (doom sigil in the second slot for the scepter) for a week after the patch but with Marauder and I still had no chance to survive

I will give this a shot this weekend… Some bug has been fixed since so I might able to survive better now.

PvE:
(it’s not like you cannot clear all content with a LB/axe-torch ranger in full cleric…)
In dungeons and fractals guardians are good and welcome.
In outdoor fights like Tequatl or Silverwastes the buffs a guardian can offer while being full offensive is massive. Anyways did you ever see a 30-50 Shattered Aegis proc? (every 15 seconds). Or what damage you can land if 20 vuln + Symbolic Avenger?

WvW:
Guardians are good in zerg fights as a support/cleaner.
Guardians are good in havok groups as a DPS or support.
Guardiand are good roamers but having mobility issues.

PvP:
Guardians have at least three good and respected builds namely:
-Medi power
-Medi condi/hybrid
-Shout bunker/point defender
and the first two have a team-support variant as well.

These are all respected builds! Even if the top100 players ignore the meditation now you can still be a top1000 I guess

Just don’t forget:

Whatever you build for and whatever your gear is you still offer a lots of support via F1-2-3 at least (not to mention dodgeheal/vulnerability/blind/reflect/safestomp/ress)! This does not make you a support buffbot! But whatever gear you wear you MUST use these for the sake of your party/team members! You have some built-in mechanics in the guardian virtues what you cannot change. If this things make you call the guardian a buff-bot than I think this profession is definitely not for you! But you can safely stay away from mesmer/elementalist/necromancer/engineer/ranger/warrior and thief! There are things in every professions’ mechanic what are sometimes NEEDED and EXPECTED by other players.

You are right! But why a Hammer must be a first weapon? If it’s supported with either Writ of Persistence or Glacial Heart it becomes a great secondary weapon.

So for example:

situ1: you take Glacial and Pure of Voice
situ2: you take Writ of Persistence and Supreme Justice

You still have options… And the damage won’t change that much…

These “stickies” are the work of a fellow player and not ANET’s.

They will do it if or when they have time… I’m also eager to see the new infos but hey!

Ask some dev to give you the new informations about the builds, spell coefficients, bugs, meta builds for sPvP, Wvw zerg, Roaming and PvE playstyles… Good luck!

But show some patience for the PLAYERS. Nobody knows what is going to work and what wont. The “meta” is not settled yet.

Hi there!

Since the patch I run a GS/Hammer Hybrid meditation build

Bursting/Hydromancy and Intelligence/Hydromancy in the weapons.

Radiance
Valor
Virtues

Carrion + Flame Legion

Glacial Heart is hard to get but since you get access to two very good condition cleanse via Purging Flames and Contemplation of Purity you can live without Absolute Resolution. It’s a very good party support yes, but since the 600 radius nerf the PF is not much worse. AR has 42 sec CD while PF has 32 but it’s also an offensive tool.

So if you don’t run Renewed Focus but Feel my Wrath then Purging Flames CAN be better. So there is a way to get the Glacial Heart!

About the damage:

The hammer is slow as a sloth but with FmW it’s horrifying! All those slow but powerful CC spells getting almost instant cast is a gamechanger indeed. Most enemies time their dodge around the normal cast time so a bit of Quickness from either Rage sigil or FmW can ruin their day a bit. And not a lot of build is suitable to survive a Mighty Blow, a Zealot’s Embrace, another Mighty Blow and a half Whirling Wrath within 5 seconds.

About the utility:

Hammer is a very good support weapon only shadowed by staff but the second has nowhere near the damage potential. This is especially true in sPvP where a landed CC can win a fight. And the hammer has 5 of it if traited (Glacial, Hydromancy, Banish, Ring and Zealot’s…).

As fast-paced the game is now even making some foe CC’ed for like 2-3 seconds means instant death in a teamfight.

Tl,dr:

Yes the Hammer is definitely the go-to weapon in a teamfight environment if you want some damage too (staff can offer better heals and the might stacks but the damage is lower and the CC potential is almost zero).

Yes the Hammer is still good as a secondary weapon! You can make any build viable with it. Getting more CC-peel and loosing some range-burn-damage-etc… sounds fine for me.

Yes the Hammer is still good as a main weapon too! Glacial Heart is not easy to take I admit. If you are support you may want AR. If you are a burner you want Supreme Justice (well… not with a hammer main, sorry).

Just support the Hammer with some burst-mobility-block-heal-whatever weapon set and you’ll be fine!

Hi there!

You can have a look at my build too! I use this since the patch…

Ammy: Carrion
Rune: Flame Legion
Traits:
Radiance (1-5-8)
Valor (2-5-8)
Virtues (3-5-7or9)

Weapon: GS and usually Hammer (yeah, I know how silly it sounds…)

Sigils: Hydromancy and Bursting in the GS, Intelligence and Hydromancy in the Hammer.

Heal: Shelter
Elite: Renewed Focus for more Condi cleanse.
Utilities: Purging Flames (the core of the build), Judge’s Intervention, Contemplation of Purity for even more condi cleanse (but you can fit Feel My Wrath! or Stand Your Ground! into this build easily…).

GS is your opening weapon if you are a +1. Get advantage of the Whirl finishers in the Fire/Light Fields! Your CC has a long CD so make sure you use it before swapping to Hammer. In Hammer you get less access to burn (only passive procs, the F1, the JI and the Purging Flames but it’s likely that you used at least 1-2 of the actives). But you have intelligence sigil so your first 1-2 attacks hit like a truck (likely mighty blow and the zealot’s embrace). It’s a standard hammer gameplay from now: try to catch your enemy with one of your CC skill.

If you are in a teamfight the Hammer is your main weapon (what a surprise! :P).
The Purging Flames can really shine here:

aoe condi cleanse
aoe burn
fire field for might
fire field for Whirl (more burn)

But you have some blinds (F1 renewed-by-justice, GS leap)
Full condi reset if focused (CoP)
AoE condi cleanse (Absolute Resolution)
AoE Fury (your meditation skills)

You gain access to 4 long CD crowd control ability but apart of the Banish they are all AoE or Piercing.

And you have two excellent burst skills on low CD: Whirling Wrath and Mighty Blow (extremely telegraphed and slow but still great for a Hybrid build…)

Combine this with your Feel my Wrath and you will see where I’m getting this from!

Note:

I know that not using torch in my hybrid set is a negative. But these weapons give me what I need:

burst
some mobility
lots of CC
aoe

any other weapon combination and I only get more burns (apart of the focus).

This build is NOT a burn guardian! It’s a build with nice CC and physical damage and some burn as backup and pressure tool.

I’m also aware that this build is extremely weak against kiters. JI, GS leap (for some extend Mighty Blow) and that’s it. You can do some more pressure with Purging Flames at range but… Do not fight a kiter 1v1! If there are many in the opposite group play teamfighter!

Well it depends what build you run…

If you have Staff/GS and Retreat you can safely poke out from mid and help far or close for a few hits and still be able to run back before they capture mid.

If you run Mace/Focus and Hammer it’s a bit trickier. You have no chance to get back to the point before they capture it.

I know a lonely MID guardian is looking strange but it’s a mobility issue. And even if you are seen by the enemy players this can turn the tide of the battle. They can not be sure if you join in the fight or run back. You can lay a staff5, stack some might and heal, lay down a symbol and immediately heading back to mid if you have to.

Even a few skills can be a changer in a 2v2 if you are a +1. But equip yourself with some mobility weapons.

A mace-focus/scepter-shield build won’t go anywhere unless they use JI.

Analyse yourself like I do!

I’m not a good pvp player far from it! I did something like this an other day:

-we capped mid so after a 10 sec (why so long FFS?) I headed to far to help out our pusher against a warrior
-on the way there I realised a thief is heading to far aswell.
-I kept running towards far
-thief got there and they finished our teammate before I arrived.
-against 2v1 I had no chance so I aimed back towards mid
-mid is also attacked and our bunker used all of his CD’s because it’s a 3v2
-I joined the fight but because we were overwhelmed at the start we lost mid aswell…
-I presented a double-facepalm how idiot I am

This is a good example how bad 10 seconds wrong rotation can be.

If you do not do this EVER AGAIN it doesn’t necessarily means you are good… It means you’re getting better!

Apart of the slightly OP ele and mesmer (and to some extend burn guardian) this meta is well balanced and fast paced as I like. The build diversity is definitely better than it was pre-patch. Every prof has 2-3 viable builds and it’s no longer an auto-loss if your team has zero DD ele, shout gua or shoutbow warri…

Full zerk is absolutely dead my hybrid build can practically one-two shot any of them apart of thief-mesmer-S/F ele. But these are a deadly +1 in any fight so they pay for their reward (as I said I still feel mesmer needs a tiny bit of nerf but it’s just me I can adapt if I have to…).

Over all I enjoy this patch more than the previous one. Maybe because I take the part to find out more builds and not just following the roads other have made.

If I’m loosing like 3 in the row with my favourite build than I know I was placed above my MMR. So I try other builds out and using different weapons:

-more stunbreaks or condi cleanse
-more support
-more defence
-more selfish builds

If this does not break my negative streak (now at 7) I go and play around with my new build at the practice fields…

If this still does not solve the problem I beg for some guildies/map-trolls to break my loosing streak

If you see two thieves just prepare:

1, bring AoE/cleave weapon for shadow refuge!
2, do not run full offensive build, change your amulette!
3, bring at least two stun breaks
4, bring vigor/energy sigil
5, bring invulnerability/fear/block/etc…

(if you take survivability at least a tiny bit seriously you should have two out of five any way)

This still won’t grant that you stay alive forever against the two of them but give you a fair chance to down one or you last long enough till the help arrives. In the case you got no help but last for like 20 seconds this means your team has the advantage of 4v3 on other points.

Remember:

1, shadow refuge: Aim every AoE there
2, count to two then DODGE
3, if you are stunned with venom break the stun immediately than DODGE
4, blind-chill-cripple around you if you can
5, keep strafing/running in circles
6, do not try to flee against two thieves! One can stay to cap the another going to chase you down. Keep the point contested as long as you can!
7, win the match 500-100

Having an immunity F4 in ALL builds sounds quiet OP… at first…

But this elite was/is the “go to elite” in most builds so I could understand to making it a baseline Virtue. But the mechanism of the virtues makes some problematic questions:

-what is the passive?
-who is affected when you activate it?
-what boon it gives?

Because 2 sec of party immunity is a big NONO even on 90 sec CD!

But how can you make it work otherwise?

Vague Memory: the devs said they are aware of the issues of some of the condition overall damages. Burning is one of them. Burning is the king of the conditions regarding sheer damage… Everybody knows this!

Getting 6-10 stacks of burning out of blue is not fun I agree! However getting 4-6 stacks of burning every 15-30 seconds and not being able to sort this out is a matter of build or skill.

This is why I support the burn application nerf instead of the “nerf the burn to the bleed level so I can faceroll with my no-condition cleanse power build”…

I would even say that the customisation of the avatar’s voices is enough.

So I might thick in the “I cannot move! I’m burning! I feel furious!” options and let the rest stay muted. The part of this feature is implemented in the game but now the character says randomly. I’m sure there are players out there who can track their 6 boons and 4 conditions by a glance but I’m not one of them

This would help a lot against condition builds but also helps the bunkers (I feel energised! I’m protected!) brawlers (I feel mighty! My defences are down!). This could help anybody to track some of their procs and play accordingly without pixel-hunting the screens top and bottom line every split second.

Most effective task in Stronghold?

At the start of the game dedicate 2 players for defending, two for offence and one for supply/utility.

Defenders: AoE attack 1200 range prefered (ele, necro, engi)
Attackers: high mobility needed also extreme burst and survivability (thief, gua, ranger, warrior)
Supply: mobility and flexibility (mesmer, thief, warrior)

1, Spawn 4 DB and an Archer
2, the attackers should get to the first guards ASAP
3, the Supply runner checks the MID… How many players are there?
4, the supply runner fights (if there is only one) runs to the attackers (if 2-3) or runs to the defenders (if 3+)
5, attackers kill the guards
6, defenders kill the DB’s
7, supply runner now decides: kill the enemy treb (and get help from the defenders if the doorbreakers died) or man their own.
8, if the attackers fail: they should get back to mid (to get some supply) OR check if the base needs help (not both).
9, if defenders fail: they should immediately get back to their position and call for help

These are the hints I can give you…

a teamfighter can go for the supply easily.
a far-pusher may get the guards
a home-defender can man the treb
the bunker can defend the gates
a thief can oneshot channelers or jump out of the gate and finish some overextending dudes
a medi guardian is as good at getting supply as killing guards or doorbreakers if needed
a staff ele can be an awesome defender or a supply-stealer
mesmer can help after supply run to get back to the lane but also a very good treb-manner
engi is a godlike teamfighter while also excels at defence
ranger may hunt down roamers but also very good at interrupting chanellers and can shoot down of the walls.

The guys on the Stronghold map not necessarily need new build…

… but new playstyle…

This explains a lot! The mesmers were hunted down by thieves in the past but now they can have their revenge! Exciton summarized it pretty well. Count to two (missisippi-missisippi) and DODGE! Also your sword BF can be really handy not just against thieves but against pewpew rangers or meditation guards as well. Your GS can counter the Shadow Refugee pretty hard (that floating house thingy).

And if you use Marauder or (God please forgive me! ) Barbarian amulette they have no chance to oneshot you.

Try to equip Traveller or even Speed Runes and Barbarian amulette… You still have decent damage, godlike mobility, and 28-30k HP

Your damage suffers a lot but hey! you have to stay alive to learn from your mistakes! :P

For PvE dungeons Zerker wins hands down!

In pvp a berserker guardian can apply a crapload of damage which can be dodged OR trying to stay alive.
Meanwhile a carrion can apply mediocre direct damage which can be dodged and mediocre condition damage which can be cleansed. But should they be forced to go defensive they can apply the condition damage what can be cleansed AND trying to stay alive in the same time!

Note: I’m still not sure what’s going to be considered “meta” and what will not. I can definitely see the advantages of a carrion or rabid build however. And I really enjoy this playstyle now (before you guys start b.tching I don’t even use torch…) !

Let’s do an easy calculation:

B (berserker) does 10k power damage.
C (carrion) does 5k power and 5k condition damage .

to avoid B you need 2 dodges
to avoid C you need only one dodge and a cleanse ability

Energy recharges faster than the condi cleanse abilities so it’s more easy to avoid the B’s burst than C’s over time.

Note#2: I do know this is not exactly how abilities work! I just try to get more knowledge and I think everybody should do the same.

Bit awkward but may work for you. This build focuses on reviving your teammates and to hold a point until some help arrives. Just ask your teammates to not die more often than 24 seconds The GS is your clear-up weapon here. If you see a foe getting low jump on him and try to CC-pull or burst down with WhirlingWrath. You are also really good at countering Shadow Refugee with symbols and your shield (even if the thief has stability you can kill him with your GS while he has no chance to oneshot you above 50% HP).

AHEM should give you enough sustain in a 3v3 fight while your 23,6k HP, 2600 armour and the infinite dodges and heals give you enough sustain to hold a point for a while.

The constant weapon swap is crucial. You get energy back and you can apply covering condition to screw up some classes (ele, thief) rotations.

This build definitely a team-fighter instead of “far-pusher” but you should have no problem at “home”.

In wvw you can do something like this but with speed/traveller runes and mix of soldier/knight/berserker. Do not use shield#5 unless you protect somebody from going down! The knockback can really kittening of your groupmates!

Sometimes GS leap lags for me… I don’t know what the enemy sees but for me it’s like I teleport instead of leap.

And do not forget the mesmer portals!

I cannot judge if this was a bug or not… But there are many necro, revenant and mesmer in pvp. The JI, the Flashing Blade and the GS leap is also very common. So you might had a little lag (or the guardian). He was pulled by a necro, used the mesmer portal, then leap-lagged while your team’s revenant used Displacement on him…

Getting full celestial ascended accessories is a very good approach. You can get them from wvw-badge, laurel and guild recommendations.

However getting full cele armour is a pain in the … (especially the ascended…)

Getting soldier/zerker or knight armour (exotic) isn’t an issue however (crafting/badge/TP/pvp boxes/dungeons).

So for example:

you get full celestial accessories and…
1, you use berserker for dungeons (scholar runes)
2, soldier/knight mix for wvw roam or havock (pack runes)
3, soldier for wvw zerg (hoelbrack runes)

Of course you can use shield everywhere you go!

Can you play every aspect of the game with a shield? YES!
Is it optimal to play with a shield? NO!

The irony is: Focus has more “shield-ish” abilities then the Shield.
If you don’t care what the offhand weapon is called then you can use the focus because it’s practically THE shielding weapon

If you’d let us know what profession you play we could give you more help.

But you have to know that the thieves are pushing out the “paper” builds of sPvP exactly because of this.
You can kill them (many of us do it often) but you have to learn how to counter them. This is why I ask for your prof/build.

There are a few more Guardian traits working like this:

Radiance IV: Signet of Wrath when you crit somebody.
Radiance V: you get the Torch#4 ability when crit somebody even if you don’t wield one.
Honor II: Shield of Absorption (Shield#5) when you revive an ally
Honor III: Symbol of Protection (Hammer 3th auto) when taking falling damage.
Valor II: Smite Condition utility when using a Healing utility.

I hope this helps you to get better understanding how some of the traits have synergy with others.

Hi Saiyan!

I use almost the same build with carrion+FL runes. Radiance-Valor-Virtues.

The twist is: I use hammer instead of x/torch. I know it’s slow and well telegraphed and not that good at stacking burn… But if you hit somebody with basically any hammer skill while they have a few burn already is a death sentence for practically anyone.

Sure I traded some mobility/burn for a true hybrid playstyle. Pulling someone into your PF and land the JI+Mighty Blow (with Intelligence sigil) on them… Means half HP and 6-7 burn. And if you fail the initial burst you can still pack quiet a punch with the hammer and you have more utility.

p.s.: may I ask you (or any fellow guardian) to do a few rounds with the same build (maybe FL instead of Balt) but with hammer? I would like to know what other guardians think about this playstyle. Thank you in advance

Guards are still too weak IMHO

Even if a defender shows up – at the cost of your life you can destroy them in seconds and there is no way to replace/buff them.

So far this is the only thing I don’t like in Stronghold.

Burning damage is fine! Burning application on some skills are too much…

Balance Brake’s Breath, Ring of Fire (not a big issue anyways…) Judge’s Intervention and Purging Flames (and maybe Zealot’s Fire) to only give 2 stack of burn but extend the duration by 33%.

Honestly Tseikk I don’t want to troll you… but you got an average 748 burn / tick damage. This is slightly more than your autoattack DPS

The burn damage itself would have kill you in 37,6 sec without considering any heal, regen, cleanse, resistance. How long the fight lasted? 90 seconds?

the problem is not the burn itself…. it’s the amount some professions can dish out in less then 1 second. Applying 6-10 stack of burn IS the problem. My preferred class is one of them (that’s why I do not play Burn guardian rather a hybrid) and the elementalist comes second.

As a hybrid guardian I agree Burning is on Rampage now…

However the damage nerf would destroy the condition builds.
My suggestion:
reduce the multistack burning’s applications (Purging Flames, Drake’s Breath, Judge’s Intervention, etc…) by a third and extend their duration by 33%.

This yields the same damage but spreads it out so there is more counterplay.
I do not prefer the “Protection-against-condition” suggestion. The bunker’s are the builds who have the most access to protection and they usually use multiple condition removals anyways. Making them basically immune to condition damage is a bad idea IMHO.

The problem isn’t the burn’s overall damage. It’s the damage per second.
So I say reduce the stacks by a third and extend the duration 33%.

We are talking about the “burn-classes” right now… I wouldn’t call a nerf on ranger or warrior burn

20,6k HP and 2600 armour: tanky enough to solo (but slow that’s the point of the GS… otherwise mace+torch would be more beneficial… if you don’t bother about speed than get these…).
nice group support
immune to condi for like 5 seconds… (you can cleanse the bomb faster than they apply it…)
nice DPS
good point denial (except for foefire…)

as Darknicrofia said wear tankier amulett.

Nowadays the zerker guardian’s survivability is in question. You have to use active defence to live. It takes skill and practice. But if you do not have time to learn you won’t… Slap on a Carrion or Marauder or even Soldier and practice with those until you get the feeling of the new enemies…

Since burn does stack do not underestimate the pressure a well timed F1 can do please!

Even without any condi damage that’s 131*4sec*5 party members: 2600 damage and a blind (maybe). This is a free 500 DPS for the team.

If any of the members have condition damage stats this is a completely different story…

To be honest with you lads I hope it wasn’t the bug Mordran mentioned and I will see more counter-condi necromancer in the future.

Before the patch I could count the number of MinionMasters I encountered on my one finger. Seeing that every profession has 2-3 viable and versatile builds makes me nod.

Now I found some counterplay (dodge the bonedogs, save a stunbreaker for the big thingy’s charge, save Contemplation of Purity for the real condi overload, line up the minions and land Binding Blades on the necro than separate him from his minions with Hammer#5 and go for the kill…). I like this kind of gameplay a lot. Waiting with my burst for the right moment makes me enjoy the PvP.
