Agreed. While Gw1 shined brighter in the areas of profession balance, story mode, and PvP, Gw2 is very well built for adding almost unlimited post-game content and goodies to chase after. Perhaps after the next expansion, Gw2 will be able to catch up on profession balance and story mode. Not sure what will save Pvp other than a complete and total skill/role split for the game modes, and I doubt that will happen

My Cantha prediction is coming true

Alex Shatter.7956

If i remember correctly, Cantha was dismantled because it offended the market in Asia for grouping all (Eastern) Asian cultures into one mega continent, and Anet was forbidden from making references to the Canthan continent / culture. The Canthan district was permanently destroyed in Lions Arch and I don’t think there is one in Divinity’s Reach. Even if they used up the entire map in Tyria and Elona, I think we would sooner go to the scrapped Guild Wars: Utopia map than back to Cantha

Necro is still easier, but now that I can reliably do more damage on my elementalist than I can on my necromancer in t4s (because let’s be honest, barely any of those 4 necromancer groups actually understood how to use epidemic or cared to), I actually get to choose one or the other, which makes a huge difference to me

What roles are missing in professions?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Alex Shatter.7956

Alex Shatter.7956

Elementalist, Thief: Need a bulky, one-on-one bruiser spec like Scrapper or Reaper, mostly so they can stop being so niche in PvP, where they are hard to balance

It may be true they don’t have a "tank"y build, but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. I can sort of see a bruiser thief, the bouncers you see out front of seedy bars type, but elementalists – the closest this game gets to classic wizards – aren’t really supposed to be the tanky type. I suppose earth attunement gives them some hardened ability to take hits, but I wouldn’t do much more than that. Instead, just play with how they attune to the elements.

Does it make perfect sense? No. But dragonhunter and scrapper also gave two professions completely new roles that conflicted with the vanilla profession, so you shouldn’t deny elementalist a new one based on that metric. also, a tanky elementalist would make the profession much more approachable to casual players who find it hard to survive in open world or doing story mode content. in addition, there are a million kajillion ways you could make a “tanky” elementalist: Crystalmancer, Battlemage, Aethermancer, et cetera

What roles are missing in professions?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Alex Shatter.7956

There are many, many threads about elite specialization suggestions. They are exciting, and will be great once we have multiple, but most threads are thematically based (I want a sword on ele, I want a ghost themed necromancer, et cetera), but I wanted to start a thread that focused only on what role you think each profession is missing.

Mesmer, Ranger, Necromancer: Need a high damage, glass canon specialization, as they are chained to their utility skills and unique mechanics at the moment in PvE. They are pretty well off in PvP

Engineer: Desperately needs PvE utility. Some AoE like Tempest or buffs and healing like Druid to make them stand out. Nerfs to epidemic might solve this problem for them in the near future though

Elementalist, Thief: Need a bulky, one-on-one bruiser spec like Scrapper or Reaper, mostly so they can stop being so niche in PvP, where they are hard to balance

Guardian: Pretty well off at the moment in all game modes. Healing specializations are unpopular, but since DH already gave them a glassy build, and they have no real way to channel their healing-ness (which is supposed to be a core part of their profession), I think it might be the way to go

Revenant: I think an AoE damage specialization would be cool. AoE damage is kind of something that Tempest dominates and Revenant would be a strong contender for it

Warrior: I’m stumped. This is the profession I haven’t really played all that much. Perhaps they are in the category of Mesmer, Necromancer and Ranger of being chained to their utility skills and need something more damaging and front-line in PvE. Beserker kind of tried to do this? They are fine in PvP as well

What to do after getting 80 with HOT?

play the game through without the level 80 boost. try out 2-3 professions to see what clicks (no one finds their soul mate on the first go). Get your favorite some exotic gear and then get the elite specs that you want. After that, for PvE at least, you can either join Team Conservative MMO, and focus on crafting, masteries, and ascended gear, or Team Screw That, and start pushing for legendaries and raids right away.

The rest are exotic. The first thing I think every player should do is get 9 level 80s, and 2 sets of ascended armor for each armor tier, and all the crafting done. It is just too fun to be able to play everyone doing everything

Generally speaking, the less people in your party, the less useful you become. You damage will be outclassed by thieves or guardians in small pick up groups that don’t communicate or buff each other. In fractals you will have a harder time dealing damage and surviving than condition damage professions like necromancer and druid, though this will hopefully change a bit.

Basically, Elementalists are expensive, specialized, complicated tools that only large companies invest funds in to maximize efficiency. Small companies, who care less about ceiling efficiency, won’t be able to afford or maintain you. If you had to take a measurement, why buy a $5000 micrometer meant for building optical equipment when you can make due with a 99 cent ruler app on the iPhone app store?

Are ele more of a support class or dmg? i was planning on taking ele to arenas and getting good.. but after reading this, i feel like were just a “back-up” also does high burst ele build use melee weap or staff?

Back end damage support. You blast things from the sidelines and let your team get up close. You need lots of support and bodyguards to do anything. No relevant elementalist build in PVE uses anything but staff after the fresh air nerf. There are no relevant PvPayment elementalist builds

so are we still viable? i wana contiune to play this class cuz it looks fun.. but if the class itself suck in arenas, then i might tryout new class..

What are “arenas”? If you mean fighting other people online (pvp) then yes, find a new class.

Things I wish I knew: it takes time and dedication to learn. I quit halfway through tempest and went back later. Reflects are your best friend in open world

Strong points: Even after july nerfs, we have very high damage, and at a comfortable 1200 unit distance. Historically we’ve had the highest damage, but at the monent the epidemic necromancer explout out does us. Another thing we do well is AoE. Clearing adds in raids and breaking down zergs in world vs world is a big reason we are chosen in squads. We have an appealing healing / tank build using concentration / toughness / healing power stats in raids, but only experienced Raiders who know you will take it over a druid. We used to have a good pvp healing build but it got nerfed to obscurity in july

Weaknesses: easy to kill and needs lots of support to get anything done. Because of this, Elementalist is more of a raid and WvW content player, and is bad at fractals and standard pvp / conquest

Ultimate do and do nots: wear full zerker gear for most content. Staff is our best weapon in pve group content but use dagger / focus for solo open world and pvp (I wouldn’t bother with pvp til we get buffed)

Current state: A high end, group content god. Raids and world vs world love elementalists because of the needed AoE and availability of support and communication. Elementalist responds very, very favorably to damage buffs. We are investments with a low floor and high ceiling.

Generally speaking, the less people in your party, the less useful you become. You damage will be outclassed by thieves or guardians in small pick up groups that don’t communicate or buff each other. Our biggest DPS bottleneck is cast and recharge time, and we are basically the reason chronomancer is relevant. Without a chronomancer, a revenant helping it extend boon duration, a warrior maxing your might, a healer keeping you alive, and a constant, large target to wail on, your damage will drop from (second) highest in the game to middling. In fractals you will have a harder time dealing damage and surviving than condition damage professions like necromancer and druid, though this will hopefully change a bit.

Small companies, who care less about ceiling efficiency, won’t be able to afford or maintain you. New to thief...how to survive?

in PvP

Posted by: Alex Shatter.7956

Alex Shatter.7956

Avoid 1 v 1s, especially with guardians. Even good thieves avoid 1 v 1s when they can. Your job as thief is to decap points and to come in on fights when they are almost over and clean up low HP enemies. D/P 3 is your best friend for this. I’ve been having tons of fun with my thief in unranked but I can’t see myself getting too far with it in ranked (though I’m sure it is possible)

Suggestions to make underwater content more popular:

1) make aquatic weapons have land uses so people appreciate their spears/tridents/harpoon guns and are encouraged to keep them updated

2) make aquabreathers drop from normal enemies, give more accessibility of these. i have my ascended one but most people should be able to buy exotics for 3g on the TP like everything else

3) brighten up the water. even if it’s less realistic: crystal clear, bright water would be much more pleasant

4) more underwater skills (why no chrono wells but necro wells are OK?)

Heart of Thorns wasn’t everything it could be, but it is certainly an improvement on vanilla GW2. The elite specializations kind of turned things upside down, but I have a feeling that once we get more than one and have a smidgen more diversity, it will become a net positive for the game. If the next expansion is targeted more towards new players, the specs are good, and it keeps its promises, I suspect another good two years out of this franchise.

All right- fine. I overreached when I claimed the majority of the player base wants a desert. But we did spend almost two years obsessing over Glint’s egg, half of Ascalon was nuked by Kralkatorrik, they recently revamped the Shatterer and there is a literal gate to the desert in Fields of Ruin, so I don’t see how Primordus makes as much sense as Kralkatorrik at this point. Although, there is that one Destroyer heart in Kessex Hills.

I liked the Ember Isles in Gw1. It was an exciting, dangerous – if not too Tolkien- place to end the story, defeating the undead lich and clearing out all the titans from Tyria.

And I hope it is exactly the way we left it- with Jade Armors and Titans running around, and Primordus’ Destroyers far and away underground.

Why are we tackling Primordus now? Has the player base not voiced enough that they want to go to the Crystal desert? And the mursaat / white mantle, along with Glint’s egg, was the perfect way to segue into the Forgotten. Although I am happy to hear we are getting heart quests back.

We’ve been talking about personal score a bit. I’m personally of the opinion that it isn’t representative of a player’s effort in a given match, and it also can be incredibly misleading and potentially lead to bad gameplay habits (5-capping home).

If you were to redesign personal score, what would you do? Does it track different types of stats? Would you want your personal stats displayed to other players?

-No points for double capping. The person on it the longest gets the points, or the score is divided evenly among players on it. Especially true for home

-No points for skirmish kills or restrictions on it. Players should fight on point

-Extra points for rezing and stomping. This behavior should be encouraged

-Point system for fast rotations, somehow. Points for joining up with allies and +1-ing fights. I’m not gonna be the mastermind behind this but I’d like to see that kind of play encouraged

-more points for following map directions. Communing stillness/tranq, running spirit orb, fighting on the bell tower

Necro not optimal for fractals

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Alex Shatter.7956

Alex Shatter.7956

My static group does MT 100 4 necros 1 druid healer in 8 minutes. Find something that can beat that. You know why people kick chrono in t4?

Realistically chrono does only like 10k DPS and all the boons you give gets stolen. Then there’s that thing called armor scaling where power DPS drops by about 30% ?tested by a dnt friend). So you in total you do about 6-7k DPS and all your boons are stolen. It’s basically asking 4 people to carry you for a free ride.

why am i supposed to believe any of this, or care? Give an adequate explanation as to why your 4 necro team can clear MT in 8 minutes (are you bouncing epidemics off horrik or something? If so, only two of you needs to be a necro) as opposed to a team of 2 necros and support. No matter how much you doubt chrono, there is absolutely no good reason to stack more than 2 necromancers on any team, ever. If you have one necromancer for epidemic, and really want to only do condition, engineer can out-damage necromancer with conditions by about 7k per second (https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/4v76gq/qt_updated_guides_and_dps_benchmarks_for_all/). If you care about survivability, druid is on top. I’m sure if you used 2 necromancers, 2 engineers and a tempest you could clear mai tran in 2 minutes with your mad skillz.

Also, toughness stops scaling after the level 50 fractal. Even if 30% drop was accurate, necro can only put out 25k in conditions per second, which probably drops to 20k per second w/out those nooby chronomancers and PS warriors, making it still inferior to any decent zerker team set up with support.

Boosted mesmer to 80 = biggest mistake?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Alex Shatter.7956

Alex Shatter.7956

Surviving in any non-raid setting should be easy. I do upper level (t4) fractals with my mesmer all the time in zerker gear, feel that my damage is fine, rarely die, and no one complains if I slack on bringing support wells. Generally, unless you are doing raids, the profession you play has little impact on survivability or group dps (to an extent), it’s all about experience
