Watchwork Pick: Why No Response?

You know that Scarlet is going to be gone in a month right? No more invasions and such? No more Scarlett’s lair. No more sprockets. Only from the pick. And the pick probably provides 0.1% of the current supply.

Scarlet will be gone. Watchwork stuff may go with it. There will still be a node in everyone’s home instance who did the meta (plenty). There will still be people out there with picks generating sprockets for the market.
Go look at the price of quartz crystals. There is no way to get those except nodes, plenty of people are making celestial armor, and even before wintersday dumped a bunch on people, the price for those PEAKED at 3 silver. These are unlikely to ever even go that high. there is ZERO basis to assume they will except for misunderstanding economics and wishful thinking.

Here is why Guild Wars 2 needs Mounts

I would accept mounts on the condition that they are 50% slower than overland travel, and impose a 20 minute debuff preventing use of the waypoint system. Tyria as structured in GW2 does not need mounts. They do not “improve” anything. Waypoints already do the job just fine. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with mounts in an open world MMO, but they really don’t belong here.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record here, even if the sprockets quadrupled in value (which they are unlikely to do, given their limited uses and the various ongoing avenues of obtaining them), we’re still talking about well over 10,000 uses before the item “pays for itself” so to speak.

Your base premise is wrong.

You clearly have never tried to sell any of the runes or sigils that require sprockets. Do you even have the recipes? Well, I do. And I can tell you that each one of them sells well, and relatively fast. There is a huge demand for these.

Now let’s calculate a bit. 1000 runes = 250k sprockets. 1000 watchwork mechanisms = 500k sprockets. 1000 sigils = 250k sprockets.
There, we only made 1000 sigils, runes, and armor insignias or weapon inscription. Which is peanuts compared to the demand for them.
Yet we already used 1 million sprockets.

Edit: I forgot to add sprockets for a bit of jewelry. But you get the picture.

No, my base premise is still absolutely fine. You’re just missing the principles of economics or finance that explain this. It’s a matter of opportunity cost. A 40c sprocket is still a 40c sprocket. If I sell all my sprockets and make 40c a piece, that is no different than if I use those sprockets to make something, because in the end, all getting those sprockets from the pick did was save me from having to spend that same 40 copper per piece. Any competent economist will tell you that there is ZERO difference in the value of a material between selling it for a price, or not having to pay that price by getting it for free.

You are telling me that the demand for these sprockets is very high, but the simple fact is, despite how high it is, the supply far outstrips the demand, and that renders the demand almost completely irrelevant. If anything the presence of this pick further keeps the supply numbers up there, and even further contributes to keeping that price down in the future

Fairness is a matter of materiality. Immaterial matters are neither fair nor unfair because, at the risk of sounding redundant, they have no material relevance. The “advantage” is so small that it is of effectively ZERO real consequence.
-snip-

It just seems rather subjective to imply that the bonus lacks any value or advantage because of how small or “negligible” it is, but if it is as you say and the bonus is of no real consequence — why not put troubled minds at peace and remove it all together? All the same, I’m not really advocating for action either way. I’m more concerned with what precedence this will set.

I honestly couldn’t give 2 kitten paws if it was removed or not. I didn’t buy one, and I have no intent of buying one, because of precisely how immaterial it is. That said, I challenge someone to actually sit there with a straight face and tell me it gives a player an “advantage” to spend 1,000 gems on an item that is quite literally going to take over seventy-six thousand uses to recoup the current gold conversionb value of the gems spent. At the risk of sounding like a broken record here, even if the sprockets quadrupled in value (which they are unlikely to do, given their limited uses and the various ongoing avenues of obtaining them), we’re still talking about well over 10,000 uses before the item “pays for itself” so to speak.

As for subjectivity, yes, materiality CAN be subjective, and often is. A thousand dollars is certianly going to mean more to a poor single parent with 2 kids to feed than it is going to mean to a COE with a 6-figure salary, but when you actually look at it relative to the cost of the item, it becomes rather objective, does it not? If you spend $61 on a new tool that is going to give you back 4 tenths of a cent every time you use it, it’s an objective fact that it’s going to take many thousands of uses before that tool is in any way beneficial over a similar tool that does the exact same job without the cost savings. I ’d love to be introduced to a rational human being that actually thinks such savings are at all meaningful.

As for precedent, the only way something wholly irrelevant can set a precedent is if people make the mistake of misattributing relevance to it. The sooner people realize how irrelevant it really is, the sooner people will move on. Anet already knows this is irrelevant, and all this does for them is confirm that people will flip out no matter how small the change, so why bother sticking to the small ones? It basically tells them there’s no point in worrying about crossing a line because any step at all is going to cross it anyway.

EULA is not LAW and has no value unless what s in it its already covered by laws.
Just wrote it so many times.

This is btw OT and useless to discuss.

But EULA is contract law that everyone agrees too every time we start up the game.

Contracts are only binding if they are compatible with existing law. The fact that you “agree” to a contractual clause is absolutely meaningless if any part of the clause violates relevant laws. Just as an example, if I sign a contract saying a business is not responsible if I hurt myself on their property, it means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING if I can show that the business was negligent. You “agree” to this every time you ride a roller coaster or a carnival ride, but if the ride fails, in nearly every state in the country, you still have a right to sue and recover money if you got hurt because they did not maintain it, even though you technically agreed to a contract waiving that right.

Go ahead and search the EULA and terms of service for exception statements such as “except where required by law” or “except where prohibited by law” or anything similar. You will find many, probably dozens, of examples of these or similar phrases. They are in their to account for just this situation.

As for who would take such a case, you SEVERLY underestimate the opportunism/greed/aggressiveness/<pick your character trait> of the legal profession if you do not think there are lawyers who would take such a case, especially if they thought they could elevate it to class action status and take a few thousand clients on. You don’t even need to be a lawyer to know this. A basic contract law course at your local community college would probably teach you all this. Watching Judge Judy at 1pm every Wednesday in your PJs, however, will not.

TL;DR: Putting a disclaimer in any agreement that says "we can change anything we want whenever we want is utterly meaningless because every jurisdiction under the sun has some kind of law placing limitations on this.

Of course at the end of the day, it’s all moot anyway. Whether or not they legally have to, anet’s smart enough to do the right thing as opposed to generating bad publicity re: cash shop items. Between headline starved tabloid rags like Kotaku and competing games, plenty of outlets would spin it into a highly visible story if they actually started saying no to people who bought gems with cash specifically for an item that was materially altered, especially after promising refunds.

Oh, and one more thing… You said it’s “the player’s word” on whether or not they converted or spent cash. No, it isn’t. Anet has these transaction records, as does your credit card company. IF and ON LY IF you happened to convert gold to gems and then buy gems while you still had the unspent converted gems, it could be left to question which gems were actually used. In which case they would likely have to account for the gems using an inventory system, and would probably use a FIFO system. In that case, the first gems consumed on any transaction would be the “oldest” unspent gems in the account and thus would be able to have a specific payment method attributed to them.

if the watchwork pick gives a sprocket why cant they give the molten pick a chance to get a bar of the node you’re mining? i really find this so unfair because now i know its just best to wait and buy last then to buy something when it first comes out

As time goes on, options get better and prices go down. Is it “unfair” that if you waited to buy a computer “later” you could get a better computer for the same price, or the same computer cheaper? Absolutely not. If I waited to start playing Guild wars 2 months after it came out, I could have gotten the game for at least $20 cheaper. Yet somehow neither I nor anyone else who bought it at release is feeling “unfairly” treated as a result of this (or if they are, they are at least ashamed enough of their mindset not to bother anyone else with it).

Honestly, they don’t need to dignify this nonsense with a response. The amount of kittening over a pick that grants you the equivalent of an extra 40 COPPER per 5 swings is at best hilarious, and more generally, depressingly sad. The scale of this “reward” is less than that of buying a booster-pack, or the potential rewards of black lion chests, both of which have been available on the gemstore since launch.

something Anet said:

They should also be able to spend money on account services and on time-saving convenience items. - Mike O’Brien (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/mike-obrien-on-microtransactions-in-guild-wars-2/)

things have changed i guess eh Mike?

What is unfair about 40 extra copper from an occasional node. Between theexistence of this pick, the fact that very few people will ever want the stats these items make, and the home instance nodes, the prices of these sprocket things is never going to be material in any way.

Even the most casual player should be offended at the notion that this completely immaterial “bonus” is in any way an “unfair advantage” that someone has over them.

So an unfair advantage is only that if its a big advantage? More importantly I think what people are worried about is if this will set a precedence. Anet will keep erasing the line and seeing what the players are willing to accept and what Anet can get away with.

Fairness is a matter of materiality. Immaterial matters are neither fair nor unfair because, at the risk of sounding redundant, they have no material relevance. The “advantage” is so small that it is of effectively ZERO real consequence. You can already buy boosters, revive orbs, repair canisters, vendor summons, and other items on the gemstore that provide a far larger and more relevant boost than an average of 5 extra copper per swing. If this is truly an issue to someone, they have far, far more pressing issues of scope and priorities than a gemstore item with negligible material benefit does.

Let’s do some basic math here, using today’s values.
This pick costs 1,000 gems. If I bought 1,000 gems and converted it directly to gold, which people have been able to do since day one… I would get 61.10g, give or take a couple silver, at the conversion as of 5 minutes ago. Value of a sprocket was 38c when I looked. For the sake of simplicity let’s call it 40c.

To recap:

1,000 gems = 1 pick OR 61.10g
1 sprocket = 40c (0.0040g)
Avg swings per sprocket = 5
avg sprocket value per swing = 8c

Q: How many ores would I have to mine for this pick to pay for itself and therefore start actually paying off financially? (We are only discussing the benefits of the sprockets since this is the only part of the pick that is different from the last 2 and thus generating all the kittening).

A:
61.10g / 0.0040g (sprocket value) = 15275 sprockets to cancel out redeemable value of gems

(15275 sprockets) x (5 swings per sprocket) = 76375 total swings.

It will take you over SEVENTY-SIX THOUSAND swings of that pick to recover the value you would have gotten if you just turned the gems into gold, right now, today. Even if the value of the sprockets quadrupled, we are still talking about TENS OF THOUSANDS of swings.

This is not, nor will it ever be, a material advantage to anyone, any more than it would have been to just convert their gems to gold in the first place.

IMO they should be either figuring out a way to refund cash or over compensate people who spent real cash to purchase something they were selling. For all those complaining about the in game gold they spend…. please that is fake money. Real cash was used to purchase gems to get the Flamekissed armor (at least in my case) giving me gems back is not really a refund. What am I going to do buy another set of armor they can swap out for something uglier the next time someone complains?

Push for this in a support ticket. For obvious reasons they won’t advertise this but give them the chance to make it right by asking for it first. My past experiences with anet’s support is that while they are not what I would call competent by any stretch, they seem to at least be ethically aligned to doing the right thing when real-money transactions are involved.

You bought the armor with gems, you get back gems. It’s not ANet’s problem that you paid cash or converted gold for those gems.

Um, actually, it kind of is. I didn’t buy the armor, because I never saw the point in a lazy reskin of existing armor, cultural or otherwise, but if anet effectively starts refunding the equivalent of “store credit” for something that they altered after purchase, that’s a bait-and-switch, easily. Aside from being highly unethical, it’s borderline illegal depending on where you are (and no, a line in the user agreement does not, as a matter of course, nullify laws prohibiting such transactions. It generally cannot be waived). If it had happened to me I’d kitten well be demanding the gems I bought be converted back to real dollars, and I’d strongly encourage anyone who bought their gems expressly for the purpose of getting this armor to do so.

Anet seems to be fairly honest with that kind of transaction so chances are they will provide the appropriate refunds, but they certainly won’t do it unless people push for it.

I would agree the fire shield is wholly impractical as a skill. That said, I would agree that it is absolutely practical as the combo field. The two are not worth comparing. leaps are offensive abilities that typically put you int he middle of danger, where you will be hit. That is the whole point of the combo. The cost of a leap combo is relatively low because 9/10 times, the fire field and the leap are both in-use for other reasons as well. The combo just rewards planned timing.

Celestial & Ferocity = nerf?

Alfador.7649

That would be the idea. =)

I got a good one too. Cancel the crit damage change

Honestly, 1000x this. I know anet is concerned about power creep. It is a legitimate concern, but….

FEROCITY IS NOT THE WAY TO SOLVE IT.

It is seemingly a very lazy, disingenuous, and ineffectual change. It attempts to devalue zerker in relation to other armors. This has been explictly stated by anet. There are multiple flaws in the approach that undermine that.

1. Berserker will be just as prefered as it was before. The choice between berserker and say, knights, is not a detailed cost-benefit analysis of % damage versus % survivability. It is a raw, black and white assessment of “do I do more damage, or take more hits?” Whether the "more damage is 50%, 10%, or 2%, everyone who prioritizes damage over durability will continue to prioritize damage over durability.

2. The intent was clearly to devalue berserker, but by ArenaNet’s own admission, it will likely hit celestial harder. This gear was already singled out to be hit unduely hard by a stat nerf once before. When magic find went away, every other piece of MF gear in the game got an alternative, or a boost to practical stats to make up for it. Celestial got neither. Now, it will again be caught in the crossfire. As a stat set that has its own time gate, that people have poured a massive amount of effort and time into, this is unacceptable. Anet has recognized this is an issue.

3. Damage is not the problem with the current power creep in PvE. It is mechanics. The reason people are making the black and white decisions I mentioned in point 1 is that nothing in any of these encounters encourages them to do otherwise. There is no steady damage requiring mitigation. There are very few attacks that are unavoidable, and mitigation boons are far too widely available. I can count on one hand how m any times I will look in a fractals run and see that people don’t have either aegis or protection up. Instead of steady damage chipping away a relevant amount of health, each blow is either negligible, or a 1-shot. If a hit is going to 1-shot or nearly 1-shot, extra defensive stats are irrelevant.

Alfador.7649

It’s been beaten like a dead horse but there are 2 glaring flaws with this approach.

Ferocity: This is clearly intended to change the PvE gear meta away from berserker. It will not do that. People will continue to emphasize berserker gear. Everything will still be zerk stacked. It will just take an extra 30 seconds to kill things. Nothing short of changing fight mechanics will push people out of the zerk and stack mentality.

Vigor: Actually like this. Vigor seems slightly too available, but the method of the nerf is not good. At 50% uptime (up to maybe 70% with the correct boon duration foods), vigor is going to be very spiky. It will not force players to plan their dodges better. It in fact will take “planning” out of the equation altogether, since without actually watching the endurance meter like a hawk, people won’t actually know if they can dodge. Instead of nerfing vigor uptime, an equivalent nerf to vigor regen rate would be much, much more desirable way to push towards the same goal.

I am all for changes that avoid power creep and encourage players to play smarter. It’s better for everyone, but neither of these will accomplish that as intended. The vigor is ALMOST there, but not quite. The Ferocity change however, as noted above, is WAY off the mark. It is worth waiting until the time and resources are available to improve the fight mechanics to discourage zerk stacking , instead of just changing the meta to make content people already find monotonous and grindy to take longer.

At the very least, celestial needs its intended ferocity amount bumped up. Based on wh at we’re being told. celestial is going to lose substantially more of its crit augmentation than berserker will. For a set of gear that requires people to put in additional time, effort, and resources on a personal level, it is unacceptable that for the second time in a row, a global stat nerf unduely singles out this set. It needs to stop.

Casual Players and Gem Store Inflation

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Alfador.7649

Alfador.7649

While Anet could change the formula at any time, I seriously doubt they would change it unless they felt it was severely hurting their ability to monetize. As it is this inflation probably helps them. The current 7.78g cost of 100 gems is about the highest it’s been, and as a result if anything it gives people more reason to spend cash instead of converting gold, and more reason to consider buying gold direct with gems as well. If anything this stands to make them even more money in aggregate, so unless they start losing a tangible number of players as a result, I wouldn’t expect it to change any time soon.

Upgrade extractor price

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Alfador.7649

Alfador.7649

The price of gold fluctuates and is out of the control of Anet. I doubt they consider the price of gold at all, since the items in the gem shop were created months before they appear there. That makes it impossible to say “in six months it will take X gold to buy 100 gems, so the price of the item should be…”

The price in gems would instead be based on what they want to make in real money from the item, according to sales projections over a certain period of time. The ones handed out for free (via gold to gems conversion) are worth $0 so they are probably not considered in the calculations.

In essence, the items you buy with gold are gifts, and people complain that they should get more gifts because they don’t want to have to give Anet money for the content instead.

It’s absurd to say they don’t have control over the price of gold. The formula that governs the gemstore prices is theirs, they can change it whenever they want. They can also either attempt to inject more gold into the game via rewards or remove more from it via gold sinks whenever they want.

If anet is seriously pricing out items 6 months in advance, and not thinking to adjust the price when the economy has shifted drastically before the item even releases, they lack even the most basic competence. I think it’s quite obvious they aren’t doing that, and if they are, it’s certainly not an excuse for them, as it is honestly even worse than if they just did a bad job setting the price now.

It’s a luxury item and not meant for everyday use. They don’t want everyone to suddenly extract all their upgrades rather than buy them. That would only lead to a market crash and a loss of another gold sink.

The thing is it’s not even a luxury item. It’s the equivalent of flushing gold or gems down the toilet. Even if you are buying the gems with cash and not converting, it is still more financially beneficial to gold with the gems and buy a replacement for your upgrade that way.

The current rewards were low, perhaps too low, but a full set of ascended armor is flipping that to be just as bad, if not worse, in the other direction. That would make it orders of magnitude greater than any other reward this game has given out for either a single event or meta achievement.

There is a reason the majority of the rewards for metas are cosmetic or vendor fodder. Giving out stat rewards for metas essentially penalizes players who didn’t participate as much as it rewards players who did. Whether you agree with it or not the stated philosophy of this game since before release was essentially not to do that ever.

The mistake you made here is thinking that anet makes decisions based on logic, or what is best for the game. Anet makes changes to wvw because they want more people to play it, not because they want it to be better. Anet is making the changes to spvp because they have an unhealthy obsession with eSports. No, an objective and literal reading of anets original statement is that the top 3 in each league would get finishers. It was explicitly stat ed as such, then later explicitly (albeit quietly) retracted. No one “misread” anything. Anet simply shared wrong information and then retracted it in just about the least visible means possible.

Yup, that can be read 2 different ways. Therefore, misread. It was read in a way not intended by the poster.

You seem to have a problem with your understanding of the word misread. “Misread” is defined as to read INCORRECTLY, not to read "other than as intended. That implies fault on the part of the reader. The statement was read CORRECTLY. It was written incorrectly. Saying it was misread either mistakenly or dishonestly puts the blame on the reader. The blame lies solely and completely with the person who wrote it in this case.

Did not get Dolyak finisher.

I wouldn’t say Anet ruined their credibility at all with this. They had none left to ruin. Of course had they any credibility left it would certainly be gone now.

Wintersday '12 vs '13

what are the differences?

Scarlet shows up and it turns out she created Wintersday as a plan to subvert all the races of Tyria. She summons Jormag’s minions (because of course they’re working with her too) to Lions Arch via her secret agent Toymaker Tixx and the players conveniently drive back her assault just in time to enjoy the end of the holiday.

Q: Is the toxic alliance still going to be showing up in WvW, or will the wintersday patch finally be removing them from EBG and Borderlands?

Dear lord I hope they’re gone.

Will Scarlet spoil it?

Alfador.7649

Like, she is everywhere, i hope we didn’t see her at leaset on Wintersday

No lore would suggest she would have any reason to interfere with Wintersday. But maybe something will happen outside LA. We still do not know what the deal is with DO NOT TOUCH, and the new release does mention stuff still happening in Kessex and around.

Lore never suggested she had any reason to do any of the stuff she did but that didn’t stop anet from retroactively M. Night Shamalaning “It was scarlet all along!” into half the pve pretext of the game.

Why the teleporting reset?

I doubt it was intentional. Probably some random bug that wiped out progress and can’t really be reversed (because if the progress got wiped, they have no way of determining how much “progress” needs to be returned, no way to know if player A got to floor 3 or never even entered the place for instance). The only thing they could do is give everyone level 3 for free, but they probably don’t want people who didn’t make it that high to skip to that point.

Anet does this frequently, and it honestly just illustrated a gross incompetence. They claim they cant tell if you have progress on something, so t hey cant fix it, even though you have achievements that prove exactly how far you have gotten. It’s just the hallmark of a lazy publisher or developer resting on its laurels and riding the wave of a successful game, knowing they dont need to actually give a crap about their players because most will keep playing despite being repeatedly insulted by their feigned ignorance. Sadly, I’m one of them. As much as this upsets me, I enjoy the game too much to take a stand against this nonsense and stop playing out of spite.

You may have found a way into the Toxic Alliance’s inner sanctum, but this has by no means curtailed their nefarious activities! Kessex Hills and the surrounding countryside are still befouled by the alliance’s evil presence!

Does this mean we’re still going to have to deal with toxic alliance stuff in wvw? Don’t get me wrong. I love most of the living story stuff greatly. It’s a great pacebreaker for PvE. IT DOES NOT BELONG IN WVW, not in the format that it is in currently. All it does is break the flow of the game. Merc camps are an unpleasant chore, dolyak runs are unpredictable, and meetings between havoc squads are ruined when a toxic spore pops up in the middle of them.

The short answer as to why is that Anet just seized on another opportunity to prove that they are collectively incompetent at executing and updating new content in a way compatible with basic common sense.

"Lifetime Survivor" achievement bug ?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Alfador.7649

Okay so… you have to get all 500k experience in one sitting, without logging out or changing the area. That is the single most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard, but it explains a lot.

I got my first tier earlier, and got to 64% before leaving an area. Since then it hasn’t progressed in the least and it’s been driving me insane, despite having earned well over 500k experience since it stopped progressing. Good to know it’s an inane implementation and not a bug. That’s… that’s just great.

I understand that this is an old topic, but I’m siding with a lot of these players, here. This NEEDS to be added to the mouseover description of the achievement. I spent the whole kitten day trying to figure out why I couldn’t get this, and no one could give me an accurate answer.

Frankly, this shouldn’t be implemented at all. If you survive 500k experience’s worth of battle or whatever, then you should get it. Zoning out should NOT matter for this. I haven’t logged off to prevent death, or run through a portal to prevent it. I lost 64% of this title just because of a ridiculous mechanic that punishes honest players for nothing.

For the record it was never actually “so players can’t abuse it” The early responses I always got from support regarding this were that it was a known bug without a fix timetable. At some point they decided it was just not something they wanted to fix so it became “abuse prevention”

Game gets stuck on battle music playlists

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Alfador.7649

Alfador.7649

I dont have custom music playlists so I haven’t tested if it persists through but the game seems to often get stuck on the battle or boss battle music when leaving a dungeon. I’ve confirmed it happening when I leave the hybrid instance from living story, or when I leave the jade maw fractal after completion. Once it gets “stuck” it stays on the battle playlist regardless how many times since I switch maps or otherwise cue different musical triggers.

It specifically seems to have started either with the Nightmares Within patch last week or one of the hotfix patches that followed it up.

This is lag on your part. The skeletal hands definitely still only appear when you’re close to the green mist that kills you. Even at 150ms of latency that stuff becomes noticeably out of place when you’re moving quickly.

Alfador.7649

It’s WvW, not GvG. Not sure what you expect. You think people are just going to leave it alone when they’re trying to play the game as intended? Anet or not, you’re going to get grief for wasting everyone else’s time in wvw by sitting there and not contributing.

Disconnection grace period

Alfador.7649

This is a great game, but it needs polish, and of all the polish it needs, this is the single most pressing issue on the pve and wvw side of content. The fact that a disconnect can punt you to the back of a multiple hours queue is unacceptable.

Suggestion: Auto Kick AFK Players.

Alfador.7649

Agreed, in principle anyway. I’ve seen that the AFK timer is definitely shorter in some situations than others. I think its a valid question why isn’t the AFK timer on any server shard currently in overflow or undergoing a live event drastically shortened like wvw seems to be when its at peak?

Suggestion: Upgrade Your Servers

Alfador.7649

I think the problem is less the server capacity and more the problem with how it handles the queue. There is something just fundamentally inequitable about the fact that you get in faster by spamming “join” than waiting in queue, and even moreso about the fact that you can be pushed to the back of the line because of a client stability issue.

Hold someone's place in a shard if they DC

in Suggestions

Posted by: Alfador.7649

Alfador.7649

A few other games have this in their server queuing, and it seems like a very good thing, So I’m not sure why GW2 doesn’t have it.

If someone crashes, DCs, or otherwise drops from the game suddenly, the server shard they are in should ideally hold their place for some small amount of time before allowing someone to fill it. Even 1 minute would be enough to account for a basic client crash or DC from a network hiccup for most people.

An option to disable right click targeting

Alfador.7649

Got an update for you guys! Thanks to everyone for dissecting the current state of targeting!

There is certainly a bug with prolonged mouse-presses and not moving the cursor. I am fixing this. However, this is certainly an extreme case and fixing this will not solve all issues players are experiencing.

The current click timing threshold is 250ms. We are playing with a lower number internally to see if it causes problems like people perceiving clicks as not registering.

There is also window of error when clicking that could cause your mouse-release to select something different from what was hovered during the mouse-press. While this should also very rarely happen with the timing and distance thresholds, it is still a potential problem that will be fixed.

On top of all this is still player preference. Not everyone wants a single right-click to perform default actions. This is why we’re adding a toggle for it in the next patch.

There are still questions left to be answered for how targeting in Guild Wars 2 should work, and I’m sure these will be answered as we continue to iterate.

Very nice. I know people sound very frustrated about issues like this but the work you guys put into fixing it is much appreciated. Despite the vocal bloviations of some people I assure you many of us recognize that not everything can be fixed at once, but even baby steps in the right direction (and I’d say this is more than baby steps on this issue) are steps in the right direction.

This problem has been “recognized” by anet as an issue for 6 months now. Has there been ANY progress whatsoever? Still getting it once in a while on Claw or Jormag and other big events. It’s a huge problem in wvw and the dragon events because if I crash or log out to restore the sound I will be kicked out of wvw or into overflow if I’m doing a dragon event.

The lag has almost nothing to do with guesting. Most of time the map will still overflow without guesting due to the improved loot.

The other problem is a real issue though. It’s fundamentally wrong that people guesting can be in a map while permanent residents of the server are locked out in an overflow. Honestly it feels like having someone come into your house and eat all your food while you have to pick up scraps.
