Sure you have to wait a bit to heal yourselves up after each fight, but it’s there.

There’s no point asking anet to implement this anymore because:

3.From the way they reply, it seems that it’s more difficult to implement dueling than hopeful people would believe

1. I don’t have money to buy a custom arena just to duel a few times per day.
2. You still have to go through 2 loading screens, if youre for example waiting for a dungeon group to fill
3. Dueling servers often have 20 people in it, making it near inpossile to join, aswell as actually play. The 2 fastest clickers get picked.

I hope our gear pieces will be actual gear, and we sont have to buy transmutations every time we want to swap… Because right now, its completely free to change looks :/.

Every time this is asked all I can see is a 12 year old player waiting on a Thief/Mesmer thinking it takes skill to stealth around on random mobs while waiting for the “Opponent” to be on cool down with all of their skill.

Dueling in this game would be a joke due to the game mechanics. It is why this question has been laughed off the forum since release of this game. You would only ever see horrible stealth Thieves and Mesmer (sadly thinking it is their skill carrying the fight instead of the horrendous stealth mechanic in this game).

I think you don’t really know what everyone else is talking about here. I think you are thinking that dueling = ganking. A dual is a mutual fight accepted between 2 players.

Not to mention that it takes some degree of skill to use stealth correctly. If someone wins by simply spamming stealth, then it just means their opponent is even worse for not countering it.

And yeah, no one here is suggesing open world pvp where you can just run up to someone and kill them without them ever accepting it.

Wars of the past weren’t really fought and won through longswords wielders, fantasy settings put too much emphasis on the longsword. It’s kinda surprising how many of the more interesting weapons are missing from games like gw2, such as the whole polearms family (pikes, halberd, spears, naginata etc).
Swords were more of an auxiliary weapon rather than a main army driver. Zweihanders were the only swords that could fight against polearms wielders.

Even the Samurai which in contemporary days are overly pictured as katana wielders were mostly, in fact, spear users. Swords are overrated. And Zweihander aren’t a replacement for longswords, they are used in situations where longswords wouldn’t even be considered at all.

It’s slower than a longsword but it can destroy a polearm. Would you try to fight a pikeman with the reach of a longsword?

Definitely not… I have experience with sword vs spear… And it’s pretty much the GW2 equalavant of Ele vs Warrior.

I knew polearms played a big role in wars, but that’s where my knowledge ends :P. I only really have experience with 1vs1 situations(or sometimes 2, but then they’re complete beginners using a sword for the first time, and I’m using a spear, usually).

With ‘destroy’ a polearm, you mean counter, right? As far as I know, actually destroying a polearm in combat is pretty much impossible.

One thing to note is that it’s not totally being dragged on the floor… you’d have to be one strong freaking woman to hold it that low in a position like that, dear god.

In my experience it’s actually fairly easy to hold it that way. The higher you hold it the harder it is to carry.

Don’t like how my character has his weapon behind him and most of his body facing towards the enemy though. Kinda asking to get hit/stabbed w/e.

Anyone play Dark Souls 2 lately? A stance similar to the way the character holds a broadsword/longsword with two hands in that game would be okay. It’s a fairly neutral stance. The character also needs to look aggressive with the bent legs and wide stance ready to act look.

Edit: Just in case anyone wants to know, the female stance is a real stance. It’s called the tail/long tail/dragons tail stance. Plus all the other names I’m sure it has.

I don’t have any experience with greatswords… But come on, dragging it with you is in no way practical in combat :P. You leave yourself completely open to attacks , and no matter how fast you are, you won’t be parrying anything from that position. Not even a super slow guy trying to hit you with one of those weights that you have to lift , that is actually too heavy for him to use :P.

Then again, I never held, or see anyone hold/use a greatsword. I’d imagine they’re at least twice as heavy as an average sword, though.

Anyone inexperienced or lacking the strength or co-ordination to use one will be slow.
Compare the strength of a person who has only just begun lifting weights to someone who has been lifting for years. The ole gym veteran can lift way more weight up with ease that the newbie can’t even get off the ground. Thus being able to move more weight faster. Also there is your body knowing how to react through practice and such/experience. A boxer can throw a punch way faster than someone who does not train or is not as experienced. When it comes to bigger weapons more strength and training = more speed.

Plus many great swords are only around 3-7 kgs or something around those numbers.

This is through my experience and logic. Though someone might tell you something different.

Historically accurate (2 handed) longswords wrigh fron 1.2 to 1.8 kilograms. Greatswords are as far as i know a made up term by games that are huge impratical chunks of metal.

Everythin you say regarding ‘having not enough strength slows you down’ is true, but anyone off average strenght can wield a longsword.

Speed in offense is pretty easy to master if you prqctice yhe techniques, but the recovery time after attacks is alot more difficult, and perhaps more important than ghe attack itself. If you use a normal weigjt weapon, strength isn’t an issue with recovery time, it’s all about practice, knowing where your sword is at all times, and knowing at which points to stop your attack and go back to a guard.

A common beginner mistake is to skip the recovery entirely, and just make a massive overswing, leaving yourself wide open. Or in some cases, slashing your own arm/leg O.o. I effectively killed myself in duels like that… Luckily it was in dreams… I just dont have the money to buy armor or anything else than a syntethic practice sword :P

AFAIK “Greatsword” is a made-up word, or at least a word that did not exist before modern times. The correct (historical) term for a sword you need 2 hands to wield is Longsword.

D&D is a major offender in this case because it refers to 1-handed swords as longswords, and probably one of the main reasons people get medieval weapon technology terms mixed up.

Yup, I actually just realised greatsword pretty much IS a longsword. I assumed greatswords were these oversized anf weighted swords that gav you spear-like range… Which would be impractical. The way games portray “greatswords” also makes them look massively oversized.

The quaggans tries to take over the world and we end up fighting against quaggan plush backpack who turned out to be alive after all and waiting for a time to rise. Its turns out that captain Imaloop takes over scarlet drills to try and make a big hole in the ruins of lion arch where the quaggan will make a large swimming pool. In order to save the lion or what remains of it we must stop Imaloop evil scheme for swimming pool dominations across tyria. Also we all end up wearing swimming suits and beach party items for the whoole day and the quaggans attack by trying to put fish on our backs effectively causing a backstab kick everytime ;P

Thered a very simple way to please everyone when it comes to duelling, you just have to be creative.

There will be 3 drop down menus in the f11 menu:

Enable duelling:

1. Disabled (default)
2. Only when both you and the other invite each other
3. Always ask. A window pops up with “accept” or “reject” whenever someone invited you.

Culling options, spectating:

1. Remove all duelling players’ skill effects and charater models.
2. Duelling players show up as whisps, like in the clocktower jumping puzzle. (Default)
3. Remove only skill effects, but still see animations and models.
4. See duelling players normally.

Culling options, duelling:

1. Same as for spectating, but culling other players instead of you and the duellist.

How to initiate a duel: right click on someone and vlik invite for duel.

Potential problem (quoted from no particular person):
Elitists will duel you to test your skill for you to join a party, and create a less healthy environment.
In my oppinion this argument doesn’t really make sense, I’ll try to explain. Elitists will ‘test you’ even without duelling, aka gear and build checks. Also, the whole point of elitists is that they want to be better than everyone else. I generaly avoid partying with thrm, and only party with friends, who play for fun.

Also, testing someone for PVE by doing PVP with them makes no sense. Any pwrson with common sense will know pvp skills dont help in dungeons, and pve skills dont hehlp in pvp.

Oh, and heres a bit of lore: "There are seperate ‘astral planes’ that are located at the physical world, but cant interact with it. In these planes usually only energy and entities which are invisible to the physical eye exist. TL;DR: Don’t be afraid to ad duellibg just because there are a few trolls/elitists that want to ruin your day, they will always be there, it’s better to just ignore them. If they refuse to party with you because you don’t want to duel, it’s because they lack common sense, and you wouldn’t want to party with them anyway. In the end, we all just want to have fun, right?

There are creative ways that reuse other systems in the game to make duelling pleasant for everyone who does, and who doesn’t want to.

Anyway, that’s just how I see it. Feel free to point something out if I madr a mistake.

Making us do less damage in pve isnt suddenly going to make people run support/heal/tank.

Running zerker in wvw roaming is about the most exciting moments I have in this game… I love the high risk, you have to use your active defenses to stay alive, because you die if you get hit a few times, but also deal massive damage… But with reduced damage, all condi tanks will just tank all my attacks and spam attacks on me to still instantly kill me without any sort of skill involved.

Condi tank is easier to play… And much better than the hard to play berserker builds O.o.

I retoll all the time, even just to change race/looks, which is impossible in wvw/pve, and exactly why I loved the gw2 pvp, you have everything frim the very start. Also, it would e nice if trait unlocks were account bound in pvp.

It doesnt matter where you put a trait. It always has the effect it states on the tooltips.

It doesnt matter which order you put utility skills in… But I generally put mobility on the 2nd, defense on the first and a special one on 3. Or in my case, decoy, blink, portal/mantra of resolve/distracrion :D

In any case, I’m a bit curious as to why you drop 10 in chaos. The regen and blink reduction are nice, but putting an additional 10 into domination would get you the torch or greatsword trait. Having the extra stealth would easily make up for losing the extra blinks, and the condi removals could be a big help in some situations where a blink or portal might not be available (i.e. immobed for 5000000 seconds). Additional iZerkers never hurt anyone either (well, aside from the people it’s used on).

Given that your only real option of dealing with conditions is to retreat, perhaps it might even be better to put the 10 into inspiration instead of chaos to get the portal cooldown reduction so you can use it more often?

I just envision a scenario where you take on 10+ stacks of bleed at 20 seconds of burning and just not being able to do anything but portal away watch yourself die hoping the enemies don’t figure out where you went from the condition floaters.

In any case, I’ve always enjoyed using sword/pistol for my shatter build, but this made me give some more consideration to sword/torch.

When I first stepped into wvw, I copied Osicat’s Shatter Cat heavy 2.0, which was 0/20/20/0/30. I had alot of fun with it, but then realised how much better 10 domination would be, so I ended up with 10/20/10/0/30. I veeeery slowly replaced knight pieces witg berserker. Now I have exactly 2000 toughness :D. Atleast I did, but then I got traveler runes and am on 2030 :’(

It kind of just worked, and I sticked with it. I was never very good at theorycrafting with numbers, so I just sticked to fun things instead… Blinking alot is fun :P

I didnt start using torch untill edge of the mists, where oter off-hands jst couldnt save me grom being consumed by the hungry zergs. There’s something so amazing about dodging into a prestige, I just love the rffect :P.

Condition removal is definitely a problem… If I get hit by pin down, which does 15k damage, I’m pretty much toast. Yum.

You can purchase any of the trait guides. Prices depend on tier and whether it’s new or not. So for every trait there will be an option to go out into the world and unlock it via specific content or just purchase it if you choose to go that route.

Fwiw, Karl and Roy are good guys who do a good job for this game. It isn’t their fault the game has a PvE direction.

Seriously? I think if people would take a second to realize that you get gold from PvP now, they wouldn’t have the knee-jerk response of calling this anything related to PvE.

You can get all the trait stuff you need from doing nothing but PvP, so there’s no reason to get all up in arms.

GW1 was set up in a similar way and it worked out really well. Personally, I’m glad to see them picking up aspects of GW1 that worked and implementing them in GW2.

It then becomes an issue of “Why can PvE players earn our PvP unlocks faster then we can?”

Simple: PvE has a lot more gold sinks than PvE. In other words, you may earn more as a PvE player, but being a PvE player costs more than being a PvP player,

This is not quite true.

Pve:

• Tap gold from monster drops, vendoring items, dungeon gold reward etc
• Sink 15% gold when selling on tp. Spend gold on vendors (which are rarely used, compared to the TP).
• Contributes to inflation (even if it’s very small and acceptable)

Pvp:

• Tap a little bit of gold when you win a match.
• sink gold when spending the gold on ANYTHING (vendors). A pure pvp player will never use the TP.
• contributes nothing to inflation, at all.

I feel like they could easily increase gold rewards (and even more easily, item rewards) in pvp. Pure pvp players will always sink 100% of the gold they earn, thus not affecting the economy at all. Players that play both pvp and pve/wvw, will be rewarded appropriatly. Currently, doing a dungeon in 15 minutes will give 1 gold. Guess what you earn with 15 minutes of pvp. Yeah, like 10 silver.

In my oppinion, pvp should be more rewarding than dungeons, atleast in their current state.

Dungeon gameplay:

• Stack in a corner and do deeps
• Instantly win, because there’s no challenge
• Collect massive reward

Pvp gameplay:

• dynamically adjust your strategy, in response to waht the enemy is doing.
• don’t spam skills, but only use them when they’re needed, and overcome your enemy by skillfull play.
• communicate with your team.
• have either a small reward, or a very small reward depending on wether you win or not.

Giving more item rewards (that are sellable) instead of gold would be even better, because players that play both pvp and pve would still either consume them or sell them, which lowers inflation.

Anyway, that’s just my oppinion.

Atleast make trait unlocks profession bound, not character bound.

The only profession I play in pve is Mesmer. The others are either lvl 2, or below lvl40. I very often reroll the lvl2 ones just for pvp, for example when I want it to be another race, or use other looks and stuff.

If I play a certain build with a new grandmaster trait, rerolling (which is a big part of my pvp experience, because I love how you have everything right from the start) would basically force me to pay more gold tounlock that trait again… Or rather, I won’t be able to reroll anymore.

Please make trait unlocks profession bound, so you only have to unlock it once, atleast in pvp :/.

What about: Strider’s Defense: whenever you successfully evade or block using a melee weapon skill, gain 5s aegis (10s icd).

It would be much more in the ranger’s control when it procs, and would eliminate all passive play/rng. I’d argue that “Aegis when attacking” is kind of passive, because you’re usually attacking :P.

You’re usually dodging, too. Gaining an aegis when you dodge basically turns it into a double dodge- You dodge one attack, then you block another. I think it’s more or less just double dipping.

That ICD is really, really short too.

But you don’t spam dodges and blocks, do you? And the ICD is subject to change, I really don’t have any in depth knowledge of where all ranger traits are located…

I think the whole point of ferocity is just to decrease damage. “We want more people to support in pve, because that’s compeltely needed and pve is more than just doing full dps” and “ferocity is easier to understand than critical damage %”

Well… With teh ferocity changes, they’re going to add a critical damage % again, so not much changed.

They’re nerfing power builds, while really condition tanks is where it’s at right now.

Several things add to it being a difficult thing to use. First off it’s tied to DS and that is our survivability. So keeping it in rotation is effectively limiting our survivability due to the DS cooldown. If you use DS for the burn and 5s later you need to tank some damage you’re toast. Lifeforce as condition spec isn’t nearly as abundant and once again using it up on a burn means you’re limiting your DS when you need it. Lifeblast itself can be dodged somewhat easily due to 1s cast time and projectile travel time so it’s unreliable. Then we have the DS condition combo of bleeding/chill+fear+torment and trying to stack Lifeblast into makes things harder and longer to pull off. The objective when the combo is done is to get in and out of DS as fast as possible to preserve lifeforce and get DS off cooldown for tanking damage.

I absolutely hate the direction devs are pushing the necro. They keep tying everything to death shroud and it’s simply not that great of a mechanic.

With the way Arenanet ‘balances’ the game… Completely understandable.

I read websites about the fundementals, how it was done in history etc. I watch youtube videos where they show certain techniques, and what real sparring looks like.

But I don’t have a sparring partner, and even if I had one, I literally have 0 money to spend on practice weapons + armor.

… So I’m limited to practicing in Lucid Dreams, where everything is free, and people are always willing to throw themselves at me and be used as a training dummy :D. (Not that they just stand there and do nothing… More often than not they actually own my face :’C).

I wouldn’t say I’m an expert or something, but I’m definitely not a total beginner :P. I’ve never really held a sword in reality, but someday, when I’m not poor, I will :D.

Domination: sounds amazing, and exactly what weve been suggesting.

Duelling: useless in spvp, it probably won’t proc on player summoned AI. Ok in zerging, you could go fire a few arrow cart shots before diving in, and chaib distortion if you get lucky. Useless in pve, because we all know all you need is damage.

Chaos: theyre putting more shatter traits in non-shatter lines? I was actually hoping theyd put them in illusions. It could be usefull in a full boon support spec… But I doubt going full support is a good idea nowadays.

Inspiration: maybe if it stacked duration it would be ‘usefull’ in wvw zerging.

Illusions: My guess is that it’s about 2 stacks per clone or something. Maybe it can make “condi shatter” viable again (even though, back then. I really couldn’t see why eople liked it.).

Isnt life blast #1 in deathshroud? It cant be that difficult to use 1 skill every 10 seconds…

Healing Signet active: “Heal yourself and gain 5 seconds protection. (Instant cast, breaks stun)”

Problem solved. The protection and stunbreak could easily make up for the lost healing, if timed correctly.

What about: Strider’s Defense: whenever you successfully evade or block using a melee weapon skill, gain 5s aegis (10s icd).

It would be much more in the ranger’s control when it procs, and would eliminate all passive play/rng. I’d argue that “Aegis when attacking” is kind of passive, because you’re usually attacking :P.

That better not be the case…. I have alot of lvl2 haracters that are just there for pvp, and i occasionally recreate them :/.

It probably means you have to buy it.

I just hope existing traits are unlocked by default for pvp… It would e rather unfair if a completely new player jumped in pvp to try it out… But had 0 traits :P

The previous rank up chests were just some random gear that you salvage for dust.

The new rank up chests contain actual valuable stuff.

Saying “we cant give you the neq rank chests, because you already got chests in the past” really wpuldnt be an argument, imo.

Besides, theres already a similar system in place, aka achievement rewards. Giving us all the chests we misssed out on would actually be a perfect way to reward pvpers who spent 1.5 years on this :P

This is what I wondered… Why not remove glory at the time the new rewards come? Why did it have to be removed a month ot so too early, and leave us with nothin untill then..

Also, why dont we get rank-up chests from ranks we already had., like when they added the achievement rewards?

I wish they made it like they did achievements.

There we got a new box everyday for achievements we already had, untill we got them all. They could do the same for ranks, and pvp-only players would suddenly feel rewarded for all those years they put into it.

Sure, it would take me 40 days of waiting, but it’s bette than just having glory removed on a patch.

I couldbt pay attention the the dialogue…. I was too busy feeling awkward by the awkward laughter, while theres nothing funny going on O.o.

I gave up after the first few months of launch, and now I have about 200 gold total… so no legendary for me xD

I always ask people how they get so much gold, but they never really give a good answer O.o

The “build diversity patch” where tey added healing signet, cleansing ire, and those other things.

That patch where they also added the aetherblade dungeon with Mai Trin at the end… I renember it very clearly :/. Arenanet said we’d get build diversity for all profession… So I was super excited for a month or so… And it ended up being a huge dissapointment where eles were the new warrior (aka useless), and warrior became jack of all trades, master of all, with high damage, awesome control, awesome defense and healing.

Anyway, I’ll just stop now before I get infracted for some reason.

I wish female humans held it like that, the way they drag greatswords behind them is sort of dumb…

The female stance is the more realistic and far more practical way of wielding a greatsword.

I don’t have any experience with greatswords… But come on, dragging it with you is in no way practical in combat :P. You leave yourself completely open to attacks , and no matter how fast you are, you won’t be parrying anything from that position. Not even a super slow guy trying to hit you with one of those weights that you have to lift , that is actually too heavy for him to use :P.

Then again, I never held, or see anyone hold/use a greatsword. I’d imagine they’re atleast twice as heavy as an average sword, though.

edit: well, the dragging thing still looks cool. So I don’t mind at all in gw2, we don’t ever parry attacks anyway… Except maybe rangers with that one skill :P. Just dontgo around calli git realistic :/.

Oh, I may have understood the term “greatsword” wrong :P.

I assumed greatswords to be massive, and like twice as heavy as a longsword. Because of that assumption, I also assumed greatswords were absolutely useless in most situations, and reall clunky to use :P.

But I guess ‘greatsword’ is just another word, and has the same meaning as longsword. I still think most ‘greatswords’ in gw2 are kind of oversized, though. I feel silly for not realizing it’s the same thing xD.

There’s nothing wrong with Nebenhut, I actually used that exact site before, and tried it out, but I prefer other guard positions :P.
