“You don’t HAVE to do anything you don’t want to, these are just a carrot on a stick for people who are willing to do something they wouldn’t normally do.”
If people wouldn’t normally do something it is because they don’t like doing that thing. Forcing them to do what they don’t like will definitely not make them want to stick around for a long time.
It’s not rocket science.
Because they forgot a basic rule of marketing: if you want to be successful, you do not give to your customers what YOU like, you give them what THEY like.
I was referring to the snowman and other minis from Wintersdays past.
But yea, those two minis sale should have ended once Wintersday had started and eb replaced with other winter-themed minis.
As for new faces and new hairstyles – I lost hope.
Seriously, for Wintersday you promote Drooburt’s Ghost and Sand Giant minis? So many players are requesting minis of Wintersday past and THAT is what you give them? And you expect to make money?
Angry Joe’s review is 2 years old. Enough said.

Are you sure?
KITTENKITTENKITTENKITTEN – No, I’m not sure, I clicked because I thought this was my coffee-maker’s delay brew setting button.
Couldn’t care less about PvP.
Also, couldn’t care less about having to jump all over the map to do dailies that I have no longer interest in, due to the way they have been dumbed and kittenized.
Another player above nailed it. It’s not about difficulty, time or rewards. It’s about choice. And people refusing to be sheeple. Soon every single thing Anet promised GW2 will be will be taken away.
I agree with the intern thing above, and if I may add “who also probably is paid under the table by Blizzard to bring GW2 down.”
Too bad that they don’t realize that the ONLY way to bring players back and make players stay is to actually go back to the way the game was two years ago.
Ok, so besides the toy weapon skins (that ARE a tad too easy to get, honestly) and the mini reward, I tried and tried to find a merchant that would give any kind of rewards that would warrant spending time on the wintersday events to get the tokens to use them. The tonic collection is ok too.
Halloween was fun – minis, costumes, 20-slots bags, tonics, etc.
Wintersday? There are some gear recipes that I discovered loooong time ago on my crafters. Aaaaand…. nothing else interesting. Maybe I didn’t find yet the proper merchant? Can someone direct me? Can anything be purchased with the wintersday tokens besides the annoying bell, gear recipes and crappy gathering tools?
At least the gem store has some cool stuff. Some.
I’m not impressed at all. I had already shifted things around so I could spend most of the time playing GW2 for Wintersday, and now I’m rather bummed. A shame. SMH.
(edited by Anyandrell.6238)
I dislike the new dailies with a passion. If before I could mind my own business and actually do what I needed to do for the character I was playing at the time, and still achieve the dailies, now I have to jump all over the map to gather and see vistas?
I don’t think so. I get my laurel by logging in, and I see soon, after wintersday (and probably still during, by what I can see on the forum) the only thing I’ll be doing will be long in – get laurel – log out.
Again, it’s like someone is trying really hard to get the game to the ground. I know, competition is hard in the MMO market and rivals would stoop to low, low levels
And now I got in one that showed 59 minutes, and then in the next minute 5 out of 6 dolyaks were dead because there were toys filling the center before me and another person managed to even get there.
Seriously, Anet?
I noticed that too, initially I thought it’s to give you time to build defenses, and here we were 5 people for 20 minutes built ballistas and whatnots, then the game started and surprise surprise, nothing of what we built was there. It wasn’t because were weren’t complete either because we were 5.
It happened on two different characters. After I played a game I wanted to get out. Well, apparently when you get out you spawn too close to the portal and get sucked right back in. Took each time 3-4 tries of mashing the V button while waiting for the screen to load in order to be able to actually get out of there.
Ok, if you don’t mind some advice from a more experienced polymer-clay sculptor. Your sculpture is pretty neat, but it has room for improvement.
1. Try to obtain the color gradients (esp the inside of the mouth) through the caning technique not through painting. The effect is really really nice. Of course you can do some crease-painting for enhanced effect afterwards.
2. Do not worry about making thinner edges. I know a lot of beginners (and if you didn’t sculpt in 15 years you are a beginner again due to how materials have evolved) worry about the thin areas breaking after being baked. You can avoid that by: a. not using Super-Sculpey (which is gray anyway and needs painting) or Sculpey III (which is one of the worst quality ones) and use instead Kato, Fimo or even the Sculpey-brand Premo. b. prepare a bowl with iced water (that is, dump several ice-trays in it and fill with water to barely cover the ice; as soon as you vget the sculpture out of the oven dump it in the bowl for at least half an hour (or alternatively just stick it in the freezer); this will harden the polymer clay making it very durable.
I’d also suggest using some green and bronze metallic powders on the clay before baking, on the sides of the body and also the edges of the mouth. I love how you did the body. Use translucent clay for the teeth (you can find it in all three brands mentioned above, I personally prefer the Kato or at least the Premo, they are more translucent) with just a headpin size of beige or yellow clay mixed in at the root of the tooth. Also, translucency can be enhanced using the ice-water method described above.
narwhalsbend, in case you weren’t aware, Juggernaut is actually a class. In GW lore there are more than the “plant constructs” of the Kurzick, in fact, if you’ve spent any time in the old Six Gods temples in Orr, you probably have faced the Orrian Spectral Juggernauts. As a general idea, a Juggernaut as class is the ultimate tank – exceptional toughness/defense, very low attack. Or you could have participated to the “Destroy the Risen Juggernaut” event, where you have to defeat a Champion Risen Juggernaut. So no, it has absolutely no connection with “plant people”, it just happens that the Kurzick had built a Juggernaut-class construct.
I think that even if they are not as frequented as the Game discussion forums, they are still plenty frequented, and myself I asked why did the races suddenly became archived.
Bring back the races forums, it makes no sense to put them in the archive, it’s completely illogical.
I have 6 lvl 80s (and a few lower levels) atm and I’m not bored with the game. Of course that there are things that are repetitive and become boring (see Silverwastes for example) but nobody really puts a gun to your head to keep doing them. I have my characters spread out throughout the map, each of them being involved in something, and if I get a tad bored of doing one thing I jump on another one of my characters and do something else.
And last, but not least – GW2 has such a wonderful immersion, everything is so detailed and beautiful, that sometimes, when real life gets stressful and harsh, I just go on a stroll and get on top of a mountain and watch the horizon and the sky. It’s beautiful and peaceful. And of course, the GW2 music is so awesome that I never felt the need to mute it in order to play something else in the background. I have played dozens of MMOs, big names and small names, casual player or alpha/beta tester, and none of them gave me this experience.
So, welcome. I promise you, if immersion is what you are looking for, there is this whole beautiful land of Tyria here that you will never get bored with. May the Six guard you in your journey.
I think they adopted the model of Animal Planet. After all, AP had a 5 seasons show, with a total of 56 episodes, named “Finding Bigfoot”. Of course nobody finds Bigfoot.
Btw, the post above mine doesn’t have a leg to stand. Any company with a proper logistics would have started LS2 earlier, so it would have ended 2 weeks before Wintersday, this way everybody would have been happy: players had their luminescent, devs would have had time to iron bugs before going on vacation. But I guess that’s asking too much. It seems logistics is the weakest point in the whole Anet.
(edited by Anyandrell.6238)
Life itself is repetitive, me boyo….
Why have the races forums been moved to “Archive”? They were fine the way they were, grouped together, and they were fairly visited. Did the races suddenly become archived?
Forums were just fine the way they were, they had a logical organization. Now it’s a chaotic mess for at least half of it.
I am so tired of online companies always “re-organizing” and “fixing” what is not broken just for the sake of doing something. I stopped visiting several stores in my area that are doing this, just because I got tired of always having to look for things.

You are kidding, right? You think that Arenanet is some kind of garage company with a handful of employees? Do you REALLY think that a kickstarter project that would bring a few thousand dollars will do anything when they already have millions of USD in profits?

Actually looking at the thatshaman.blogspot map, the skirtt ship is EXACTLY on the location of the Mamnoon Lagoon.
Go in game
Get on the ship

One thing that profoundly bothers me is the whole “zerker” thing. Especially because it makes no sense.
Why would, for example, a fire elementalist hit harder while wearing berserker gear instead of hitting harder (total damage) when wearing condition damage gear? It would stand to logic that the damage from burning condition should be higher than the damage from direct hit – because, hitting harder with what? throwing a burning ball of straw at someone and the ball hits them and bounces off of them vs throwing a burning ball of pitch at someone and it clings to them and burns them to death. To me it seems logical that a fire elementalist, for example, should benefit the most from condition damage and maybe also from criticals.
Same would work for any of the other types of gear. It seems to me that whomever created the algorythm for damage did not take into consideration classes at all, just plain “oh power +precision+ferocity will do best damage”. Like everybody was a warrior, and we wouldn’t have different classes.
If the stats on the gear would REALLY be re-calculated correctly depending on class AND weapon, then there would be a use for all the gear existing in the game, and the berserker gear (as well as mats used to make it) wouldn’t be overpriced.
Or that is too much to ask?
@narwhalsbend “We already have on race of plant people; we don’t need more. Also, the developers want to avoid anything culturally specific.”
Say what?!?
I didn’t get to the point of taxi-ing from Breach to Breach, but I definitely log in from time to time on my ranger that I have parked in silverwastes and if it’s close to the breach I would go to a fort.
Otherwise, the “Pack bull-defend-fort-defend-repair wall-rinse and repeat” after the first week only got so boring, that I can’t usually stand more than 10 minutes of it at a time.
Laby also is not really worth all the work, I didn’t find the drops any better than what the champs outside after the breach give. Less bother and faster working. Unless I get a greater key at the Breach then I only go in, open the chest then spend some time looking for Bandit chests.
Otherwise, yes, booooring. I don’t find the luminescent gear that awesome that I’d be willing to do mind-numbing stuff over and over for it.
I found that Elementalist is the easiest to level for me, followed by Necromancer, Warrior, Mesmer, Guardian and lastly Thief. I tried an Engineer but got so bored with it that I deleted it and made a second Ele, charr this time.
I hope you know about salvaging – extracting materials from gear you get in drops. Buy the kits from merchants.
Best thing is to salvage items with white or blue names and vend in Trading Post the ones with green names or higher.
1. For me GW (1 and 2) are pretty much an ‘escape from reality’ and I like the immersion feeling. This is why
2. I hate WvW and PvP as it’s just a back to reality and how mean and stupid people can be. and
3. I don’t like names that aren’t lore related (except when they’re really goofy)
4. I hate gold-sellers with a passion.
5. I hate trolls.
6. I would judge anyone who misuses “their, they’re and there” and uses baker’s apostrophy for plurals; also who misspell words on a regular basis – I can easily differentiate that from typos.
7. I can’t do JP for my life, due to nerve damage to my arms and hands. Nevertheless, sometimes out of the blue sky I’m able to finish a very kittene and I’m like “wtf just happened?”
8. I find myself regularly cussing at bad drivers using “skritt-brained idiot” or other GW2 insults.
9. I love RP.
10. I played almost since launch but took a long break at one point for medical reasons. Due to that I am still a big noob when it comes to lots of things in game.
11. I have an obsession with Sylvari, most of my characters are Sylvari and I would spend 3-4 make-over kits on each one once they reach 80 until I get them to look the way I like.
12. I don’t care about any item that takes too much work to get. I play for fun so any idea of working for something in game will make me not want to get that item.
13. I never did Fractals and I only have a few paths on a few dungeons done.
14. I go out of my way to help new players – and once in a while people remember me later and thank me again, that makes me feel all nice and fuzzy.
15. I am obsessed with the looks of my characters and would go out of my way to make them look unique.
16. I hate the gem store but would spend at least $50 a month on it. See above.
17. I’m obsessed with having all the dyes in the game (see no. 15 above)
18. I love minis. Especially the cute ones. Don’t care much for the ugly ones.
19. I have a crush on Trahearne. So there.
20. I love making buddies in game (RP or non-RP) and have someone to play with. Even if I don’t mind playing alone.
21. I make money very easily but spend it as fast – don’t seem to be able to hold on to more than 200g at a time, and would make at least that amount and spend that amount in a week.
22. I’m obsessed with crafting – only have 2 more professions to bring to max. Hence my ability to make lots of money, most of it come from crafting.
23. I’m really lucky in exotic drops but never got even a pre.
24. I get lost easily and have the tendency to press the wrong key and jump off cliffs or dodge in the wrong direction and die.
25. I hate the MF. But seem to come back to it over and over and waste hundreds of yellows in the hope of getting something nice. The best I got were some exotics that helped with collections.
26. I think Asura females are cute as a button, while Asura males are ugly as hell. I wish there were better differentiations in Charr between the two genders. Also I wish there was a better design on most of the Medium/Light armor for Charr, the way the hoods look on them reminds me of “E.T. goes home”.
27. I do not have a single human character; I also hate the engineer and thief classes – don’t have a single engineer and my thief (who was among the first characters I made) is still level 21 after two years, and a mule. Mostly because I hate playing melee.
28. I don’t really care about what is considered best build, I stat by what I think suits my playing style best; it works pretty good.
29. I compulsively resurrect everything around. Players or NPC alike.
Juggernaut – very high defense, very low attack, but works with conditions inflicting.
Heavy armor; maul/mace main hand and warhorn/torch off hand for melee; rifle and whip (new weapon) for ranged. Lower range than other ranged (1,000)
Elites: 1. stone giant form (invulnerability for x seconds, slow moving) 2. Avalanche (speed attack, interrupt and stun X targets xxx radius)
I didn’t even bother with Mawdrey. I had started and did a few things, but when I saw the amount of work required I said “oh dear, this looks like work, not fun, and a lot of time wasted. Also work for which I’m not getting paid. No thanks.”
Also, when first saw one and saw how ugly it is, I was like “eeew glad I didn’t bother”.
Also talking of junk. I get not being able to TP the various rewards and karma items, but for goodness sakes, at least be able to salvage them (and in some cases recover some expensive rune or sigil you’ve put in it), or if not, able to vendor them? It’s such a waste and it seriously triggers my OCD! lol
“why didn’t the pact just carve a plant sample from the mordy tentacles, develop a herbicide that would kill the tissue "
’cause Mordremoth is good partners with Monsanto. GMO-herbicide resistant vines wink
Sorry, but that is such a darn cheat, and the reason of “oh we want you to focus on the gameplay and not worry about looting the bodies” is one of those “please just don’t tell me that it’s rain”.
Today I’ve been catching up on several of my alts with the LS2. The rewards at the end of the quest are a joke. On three characters, been playing for 3 hours on this, I did not get one single rare. This last one, “trouble at Fort Salma” been doing on my necro and on purpose went ahead and toured the whole fort and killed practically everything I could find (except the stuff in the poison area). Result? 8 (eight) drops of which one fang. one venom bag, the remaining 6 being gear with NOT EVEN a green one, just blues and two whites.
Haha! That’s a good one! Elemental-y Elementalists sounds cool!
Yes sorry I didn’t reply earlier as I was LS-ing. Yes, the Laurel vendors, that specific photo was in Divinity’s Reach. I see someone already used the Ladybug.
But yea, me and a friend cracked up a little on that one.
Don’t say? I thought I was getting “2 Thief Pieces of Warrior Gear” or maybe “2 Elementalist Pieces of Mesmer Gear”???
Because I hope it’s not some cannibalistic stuff like Elementalist Gear made out of Elementalists…..
(see photo)
I think in all this debate, people actually forgot the scope of the whole journey. We are to figure out where Caithe went with the egg, and why. That is the reason why we are going through all those memories.
The story is poorly written not because of the syrupy love dialogues – because, after all, we’re dealing with Sylvari, they ARE all lovey-dovey – but because it contradicts so much of the lore and history to date.
Let’s see the “sins”:
1. In this memory it’s not Rhiannoc who died first, like the PS (and the wiki itself) describes. But other 3 first born and Rhiannoc is getting ready to go on his journey.
2. The Asura, after capturing and torturing Malomedies, realize he is a sentient being and release him and apologize; then they turn around and capture more sylvari for their experiments? Also, Sylvari powering up golems?
3. The second born only now are awakening, and haven’t really gone beyond “Mother’s roots”, the first ones doing so are kidnapped by the Asura. Neveretheless, Faolain comes to the Silverwastes with a full platoon of assorted Sylvari fighters. Who are they and where did they come from? The answer some people gave me was “oh it’s been a while so they had time to get all trained and stuff”. Doesn’t seem at all like “it’s been a while” at least not long enough.
Feel free to add.
I soloed it on my zerker necro, died 4 times to the point of being naked, but still beat him. Fast paced tho, I think it took me maybe 4 minutes of hit him for 20%, die, respawn, repeat. It took longer to run from checkpoint than the whole hit him-die phase.
There still is one more Tuesday (the 9th) before Wintersday, so let’s hope the next LS episode will be then.
Guess what? I was wondering the same thing, then killed a bandit boss in the new area with the skritt and the bandits, and I got a slip of paper that said something to this effect when hovering the mouse over it: double click to gain the ability to purchase blablacarapacegloves from merchant.
So, good luck on getting that drop.
Looks beautiful, like a little sprite!
I agree that it’s a grindfest. When I first saw a “piece” that said it needs to be “combined” I was like "seriously, what’s next? next episode we will need 4 pieces and so on? THAT is the new content?
The thing is, I don’t grind for the new skins. For several reasons (of which the look that is meh is just one). The most important reason is that see, I am an adult (and not even a young adult). Sometime along my adult years I got this piece of annoying habit, if I perform any kind of work, I expect to be paid for it. As in money. I play the game to relax, not to work. I even did play the Silverwastes lately quite a bit, just for the quantity of drops that I can salvage (still have 3 professions to bring to 500 and some collections to finish) but that is about it.
In the past there have been numerous instances where, when I saw all the things that must be done in order to obtain something I said “oh cool, guess I’ll never get that.” Last time it happened with the Mawdrey vine.
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a little work and I’m not whining. Not saying that they should make things easier because wawawa QQ I can’t do it. Not at all. I can, but I will not. I prefer to take a stroll in some beautiful spot of Tyria instead of spending hours on end to acquire something that – in truth, isn’t even that exceptional. Most of the chars are play are Sylvari, and I like to dress them in Sylvari armors. I might put a non-Sylvari piece on them (piece, mind you) in case I don’t like any of the Sylvari varians (see the cultural medium boots, that are all exceptionally bulky and don’t fit with the rest of the armors), but otherwise, thanks but no, thanks.
Thank you all very much!
Can someone please explain to me, so we see the first born and the second born. Right?
So, the Shadowy Warriors and Shadowy Bulwarks that are called tot he Silverwastes by Faolain and Cadeym, who are they? Because they are obviously sylvari. Faolain calls them “our new friends” so they are new to the existing Sylvari of our story.
They are not the firstborn, also obviously. They can’t be second born either, because the second born just woke up and are like babies, right? while these guys are all full-blown warriors and stuff.
So, who are they?
You’re kidding, right? Only in my guild 80% of people bought gems for at least $30 a month. It’s a tad more than a WoW sub. Talking revenue here. Excuse doesn’t stand up you know.
It definitely didn’t look dead an hour ago… At least where I was
Seems to me like there was a lot of work put into those skills – animation and all that good stuff. I don’t know why I think that wasn’t done just for one relatively little section of the game.
Are we to expect an assassin class?
Otherwise, I join the ones who hated playing Caithe. I don’t like melee. As others did, I honed my own characters and love to play them and definitely more efficiently. I.e. the Asura lab – I first entered with a group and someone else was the instance owner. My necro prepared some seasoned mincemeat of the stuff in there. To make a long story short, the instance owner blundered and we all got out before mission was done. We went back inside, this time I was the instance owner. I hated it. Hated, hated, hated it, every single time I was fighting something I was thinking “OMFG, I would have killed this thing 10 times over on my necro.”
Also, didn’t see anyone making this observation, but, considering Caithe’s “young” look, it seems that Sylvari age, don’t they? And also they can change the color of their glow as they age, right?
Otherwise, let me compare the LS to another world acclaimed and most wanted cliffhanger story: Song of Ice and Fire. Big difference? Yea. That fat guy knows how to make things darn interesting. You don’t mind that you got to wait a little bit more (and hope he doesn’t eat himself to death before coming up with the next book) because so much STUFF is going on in the meantime. GW2 has so many open possibilities it is, honestly, unbelievable that they couldn’t find someone to write the stories better. Heck, I am sure any of the most active and most knowledgeable players would be able to give a suggestion or two. For free. Or who knows, maybe make some kind of story-making contest for each episode, and give an in-game prize for the winner.
I honestly can’t see how people can’t understand that the title of this episode, i.e. "To catch a thief, you must become a thief” has nothing to do with actually capturing Caithe now, but with the fact that in order to track her, you must BECOME her, in her memories, as PC in all the visions IS Caithe.
Also, the people Faolain had hired to accompany them in the desert… wait – what?!? o.O
Nice to know we can turn it off. As others said, it’s way too strong, can’t even see what is beyond the “glow” and it bothers my eyes.
