Depends what will be actually released in upcoming 6 months.

So far the competitors are so bad that Gw2, even with all its flaws, it’s prolly best option on the market atm.
(imo).

But yeah, just let WildStar or Archeage get out and things will change, and fast.

GW2 is definitely the fastest horse at the glue factory, unfortunately.

I wouldn’t count on Archeage being any good though. They’re going f2p in Korea already in like 6 months and it sounds like a typical asian grind fest.

Only Bless and Camelot Unchained sound interesting to me, and it’s likely because I haven’t seen something concrete on them yet to turn me off completely…

The hologram farm fest was a terrible idea.

8 min cool down on the node. So you basically can’t even make it from one to the next without someone blowing it up within 3 seconds of mobs spawning.

I run a lol ranger and even I can aoe the mobs to oblivion in seconds. Which basically meant the best thing to do is to play alone and hope no one is on the map, or you have to sit there and camp the node. I came to that realization after watching for 8 mins for a node to respawn and then just logged off.

Don’t barrage zergs since they will often have many players with retaliation up. Sorry but its that simple. There are many other things you could be doing instead of using the one skill from one weapon used in one scenario that gives you too much damage.

LOL, this is why we can’t have nice things.

Just don’t use your AOE on a group. Makes sense.

Retaliation is a cheesy skill that needs to be nerfed into the ground by a hard cap. Like 100 dmg per strike and capped at 3k in total.

You know why I know it’s a broken skill? Because on L2, one of the most unbalanced mmos ever, reflect aka retaliation is the most sought after augment on a person’s equipment. People would dump millions of adena into getting it from the RNG god. Skill like that has no place outside of 1 vs 1 since you cannot stop hitting your opponent because someone else is going to be hitting you if you just stand there.

Full Circle...Back To LB + Damage

I’d take Hunter’s Tactics for 10% dmg flanks over Rejuventation.

Healing spring also makes more sense than TR. Firstly, you have no cleanse. Secondly, TR fits more for tanky builds that could absorb some damage, being glassy means you need to heal up immediately when pressure is on you. Lastly, you get extra heal if you leap through HS with swoop.

Run Scholar instead of Ranger runes for glass builds. You’re using perception to stack precision already, you don’t need that much precision. Personally I’d stack power with bloodlust instead. I would stack using a separate LB also. Put sigil of fire on the 2nd LB and use it after you’re done stacking.

Pure glass cannon LB is the only way to play when you zerg surf. The most efficient way to farm bags and wxp is to tag as many people as possible with enough damage to qualify for loot when they die.

Qualifying for a bag requires very little damage. Also without toughness getting to a zerg is more difficult, , portal bombing is really risky, skill lag kills when they heals cannot go off and the zerg getting hit in the back folds GCs like a cheap suit. Pumping up the power is great, but toughness still remains incredibly important in fights otherwise a player spends a lot of time on the dirt instead of tagging.

I know on my thief I still hunt GCs in the back because I can usually kill 4-5 before they realize what is bringing them down.

Having a low damage requirement for loot still requires some kind of threshold that you will not meet as quickly as a GC, especially for a non burst class like the ranger. If the difference is 2 hits vs 1 hit, you’ve basically reduced your farming rate by half. And you’ll need more than 2 hits if you’re blowing it all on toughness.

I’ve never been ganked by a thief in the back of a zerg. T1 rolls with 40 to 50+ zergs, it’s pretty hard for a thief to flank and get out when you stay right in the center mass.

I actually find skill lag works in my favor as long as you position yourself properly. Having nothing but 1 to spam increases the ranger survivability. C&D, killshot, RTL/firegrab, bullrush/100 blades and the like are all off the menu during skill lag. So the only thing that could kill you is getting focused fire by range. Which all boils back to being a positioning issue.

na glasscannon and Bm isnt an option for me you told allready the reason.
so the only way to play at big zergs is trapper/condition or on spirits ( which are a bit useless compared to the support of other classes)
or even power/longbow ( which i play actual)

but thx for your helpfull answers

You’re doing it wrong.

Pure glass cannon LB is the only way to play when you zerg surf. The most efficient way to farm bags and wxp is to tag as many people as possible with enough damage to qualify for loot when they die.

This is not a trinity game where you can tank. The best kind of mitigation are things like dodge/invulnerability/blind, not toughness. Once you’re zerg surfing, toughness is irrelevant. You should be pew pewing from the back of your zerg. The way I look at it, it’s like I have 500k+ hp/500k+ toughness, (i.e. my zerg) if they cut through all that and get to me, another 3k is not going to matter. And if you run SotH/GS/LR, you can get away fairly easily often times even when they do.

lol am i missing something...Spirit builds?

in Ranger

Aridia.3042

Sure, let’s debate…

…but first, this is just for the sake of argument.
We both agree that banners outclass spirits, right?

Untraited

  • Warrior banners last 95/120 seconds untraited.
Ignoring factors such as out of combat travel time, the overall damage increase for Warrior Banners untraited is around 10% for non-crit players and 17% for crit players
  • Ranger spirits last 60/60 seconds.
Ignoring the fact Ranger spirits can die reducing their uptime to under 100% and the requirement for a Grandmaster trait for them to be moveable to a different battlefield, they still increase the damage by 3.5% untraited or 7% traited.

Introducing adept traits

  • The Adept level trait “Inspiring Banners” for warrior increases Warrior banners uptime to 100% bringing the damage increase back to 13% – 21%
  • The Rangers adept trait “Vigorous Spirits” doubles the spirits health, merely increasing the chance for a 100% uptime (still no guaranteed uptime)

So with both classes investing 10 points for their skills we are at

  • Warrior: 13% – 21%, mobile, unkillable
  • Ranger : 3.5%, immobile, killable

Moving on to master traits

  • None for Warrior
  • “Spiritual Knowledge” doubles the proc chance for Spirits

So for 20 points (optional for the warrior if he doesnt want to use the Grandmaster trait) we have

  • Warrior: 13% – 21%, mobile, unkillable
  • Ranger : 7%, immobile, killable

And finally Grandmaster traits

  • Warriors with “Inspiring Battle Standard” will provide permanent regeneration.
  • “Spirits Unbound” is the only way to make Spirits mobile, but increases the risk of them getting killed by the enemy.
  • Warrior: 13% – 21%, mobile, unkillable, permanent AoE regeneration
  • Ranger : 7%, mobile, easy killable

Your move :P

You forgot the best part. Banners have a blast finisher for water fields.

Good suggestion OP.

There’s no viable way to keep targets at 1k+ range. Even if they add chance cripple to LB1 I don’t think it’ll solve that problem entirely. So this is a nice suggestion to make the weapon more viable especially for 1 vs 1 encounters.

It’s not really the armor itself it’s the idle movements female humans do although like I said before bigger coats shoulder armor etc cover more area making it slightly less apperant the quiver is floating in midair very far away from the body, thing is most armor looks kitten too and fits really poorly aswell I’m really picky on these and I like T2, T3 and the AC chest precisely because they are slim fit and it looks much worse while wearing those.

I wish they would make is slightly smaller and position it a little more like the acended quiver it would help alot I think.

Yeah same problem cuz my toon is human female also. :<

It looks particularly bad when you use a greatsword and it’ll look like the quiver is hovering and completely detached from the torso. Same thing during running animation. Kind of wish I kept my original quiver despite how bad the textures were for it.

If not, post proposed patch changes in advance so they could be discussed. And no, we are not asking for deadlines on it, and we realize somethings can’t be finished by a set date due to unforeseen problems. Tried it naked wearing only the Quiver, nothing. It finally appeared on my character several hours later after dying and respawning in WvW.

It is only visible while looking at the character from the world view, it is still invisible in the Hero panel.

IIRC quivers never showed up on the hero panel ever. So that’s normal.

How do you turn yourself, manually with the mouse? I usually use about face, then use that/LR, then aboutface again. Sometimes I mess up that combination in the heat of battle though.

Practice rotating the camera with your mouse. There’s no need to use the about face button if you flick the wrist. For things like hornet sting, you should be rotating the camera right after you’ve hit the button so you’ll be oriented properly to use monarch leap. There’s a generous 3 second window though after the first backwards leap, so don’t fret if you can’t do it seamlessly.

I like zerg busting as much as the next person, but AC is overpowered. Hits too hard, shoots too far.

Tried to take SM last night. Trebbed 3 holes into the outter wall and we poured in. Tried to build catas ontop of the outter wall and the AC could reach it from the inner wall. Err… so you’re suppose to treb both the outer wall and the inner wall? What’s realistic is not necessary fun or balanced from a game play’s point of view.

Devon said they couldn’t increase AOE cap due to technical reasons so I hope this is not their response to the suggestion to increase the AOE cap, cuz it’s not the same thing. AC hits way harder and faster and further and refreshes quicker than any AOE from players. That said, the fights were more build up and sustained and felt more siege like but it lacked that ebb and flow.

There’s a happy medium in there somewhere and this is not it. I wouldn’t suggest it revert completely back to the prepatched state, maybe take the buffs down by 2/3 and see what happens?

You cannot possibly create build diversity when you’re forced to take certain traits with utilities. Traits, should enhance your skills, and not be a requisite for your skills. This goes the same for signets. Good buffs in the last patch, but I still have 0 reasons to take them because I don’t want to be pigeon holed into taking signets for going so deep in MS for Beastmastery.

I noticed the Moa is very picky. It will not fire if you’re moving. It doesn’t like height difference either in your stance. I was on EB last night trying to flip Golanta and was standing on top of the pile of lumber and it would not cast F2 on me after pushing it 4 or 5 times. Watch the head of the Moa, if it flashes a golden aura when you hit F2 it’s basically saying I don’t like where you are right now so I won’t fire it.

1 stack of might = advantage or disadvantage?

in Ranger

Posted by: Aridia.3042

Aridia.3042

Warhorn is basically obsolete. 1 stack of might = lol. Fury could be gotten from Moa, and haste could be gotten from birds or be replaced by SotH/Swords’ gap close.

Even if you run BM and can’t afford to waste a pet slot on Moa, you’re more likely to be running a torch/dagger off hand anyway. Plus Hunter’s call is worthless when you lose line of sight which is completely out of your control after you’ve fired.

So the question is not whether 1 stack of might will get you wtfpwned, but rather why should you even bother taking the WH at all out of your bag.

The AoE limit is due to technical limitations.

Or was the arrow cart buff the direct response to that because there is no way AOE cap will be increased for the individual player?

Banners burn people? Blind? Chill? I don’t think so. It’s not a valid argument.

I probably didn’t word it the best way, but you misunderstand me. I personally don’t want that it to be invulnerable like Banners are, because I don’t want them to be invulnerable, not because I think they’ll be similar to Banners (I do hope you see the distinction). I want them to have HP, so I actually have to think about carefully placing them. It’s more interesting to me.

That’s me personally though. And it’ll empower me to do this more efficiently if I can more precisely place my spirits.

If placement is more interesting for the game, then Anet got it backwards. Mobility should’ve came standard with the spirits and traiting it should let you make it stop and guard instead.

That way, the secondary status/blown up effects actually makes sense and you can drop them off in areas designated by you as quasi traps as the enemies advance to the position. That said, the HP problem is still there.

IMO, they’re doing it wrong either way. These utilities need help, badly, and the route they’re taking is not helping.

I disagree with that. I’m fine with Spirits being killable. I don’t want banners named Spirits.

That said however, I would sure appreciate it if these changes go through, because it’ll empower the player in being active in protecting these spirits.

That’s just silly. If you add too much HP, they become meat shields Not enough HP, then they die like they do right now. There’s a reason why they’re having such a hard time with this because spirits with HP is just a terrible idea. The quicker we call them out on this kind of “balancing” the better.

Honestly, the problem isn’t whether you can control it or not control, but because you have no idea what the CD situation is unless you count in your mind internally.

That’s a really good point.

I kind of wish there was a way to tell. But what could they possibly do that wouldn’t be a UI nightmare?

You could have 4 glowing numbers ontop of your F skills to show you (like the number lights up when it’s in rotation to fire next and greyed out otherwise) but it would be silly to go down that route to show me the CD and not let me control it instead. Because by virtue of you showing it, it means you’re expecting me to count it to time it without being able to control when I fire, which is far more complex than just me using it.

They should just give me F5 to F8 and let me control an extra 4 skills instead. The complexity argument is bullocks. Ellies have 20 skills. We have a Ron Popeil set it and forget it bot. If anything, this class needs more complexity.

Am I the only one frustrated with the hosts/guests of the SoTG due to how poorly they handled ranger questions YET AGAIN.

Every other class they get devs to explain things further or examine details more thoroughly in terms of positive changes for a class. For rangers, all the managed to squeak out was asking about nerfing pet leash range.

They didn’t ask about any changes that would increase build versatility, they didn’t ask about any changes that would increase weapon versatility. Yet at some point, it seemed every other profession had a question the pertained to asking those.

I’m just curious as to why rangers always have to suffer through the poorest state of the game representation. When things like our pets toughness and vitality get concerned responses from the hosts, it lets the ranger community know how tunnel-visioned these “top-tier” players are, and that their opinion on things doesn’t even always reflect the actual state of the metagame (for rangers. like maybe they would see less frustrating BMs that they don’t like, if there were other strong builds besides it and traps).

Can we get an active, appropriately pvp “tiered” player who actively plays ranger with at least a partial degree of knowledge about the class that people who main ranger have? Then we can give him some sort of metaphorical “taxation without representation” tag in the chat to appropriately summarize how under-represented or misrepresented the ranger community has been and actually have a person who mentions issues of build and weapon versatility.

You know, the same stuff that got discussed in at least some detail for every other class?

Just a theory.

1. Not a lot of pros main rangers. It almost becomes a vicious cycle. No one asks questions so devs don’t really focus on the class. Devs don’t really focus on the class so no one mains them to have questions to be asked.

2. Rangers feel cheap and annoying when you play against them so there’s an inherent bias against them. Your best builds involve traps, which are invisible; and BM, which is a glorified bot with RNG. Not usual characteristics associated with “skill” in pubs or competitive settings.

Yeah I have to go with Sebrent when he says pets aren’t RNG, aside from crit which affects more than just pets (and pig F2).

Also, when you say the word trap, does it really sound like something that should be blatant and avoidable? It kind of undermines the philosophy of trap. Oh wait, there’s also engineers with Incendiary Powder who provide a much more constant on target bleed with Incendiary Powder AND poison if running pistol. So the only thing left to argue on “how powerful” traps are is spike trap, which is basically a glorified sigil of Geomancy with a longer cooldown, that’s unblockable if you walk into the area rangers just overhand threw a big obvious clump of whatever becomes a trap onto the ground and then begin circle strafing around it.

Necros were discussed with their marks in the state of the game, and they were wondering how they could make Marks even less avoidable (which would essentially be making them more like ranger traps).

Maybe it’s just me, but holy contradiction batman, I’m mindkittened!!!

Those wouldn’t be the only options if people actually talked about improving other options.

If you ever played any FPS, you can see the perception of the people I’m referring to. Just look at claymores. A lot of players don’t like them, because they feel it’s cheap, despite that you can see them and blow them up. Before BF3 came out, DICE posted frequently on the UK forums, and there were multiple threads asking claymores not to be included in the game.

Look at people’s reaction to snipers. Again, it’s “cheap” because people feel like they can’t fight back. It’s the same thing. Just because it’s realistic doesn’t mean people won’t be turned off by them when they’re on the receiving end of said weapons.

And really you guys are arguing semantics with the RNG comment. The point is what comes out of the pet is not controllable. Just because the underlying formula is not real RNG doesn’t change the fact that the output is basically RNG like. Sure you can keep track of the pet routine but are you going to? No one can when they play it because you’re watching your own toon so the outcome looks completely random. And by focusing on my description of it totally missed the point of the issue, that is pets introduce far too much randomness, imbalance and skill debasement into the meta. Things like that don’t translate well into the skill category on a competitive scene.

SOTG for Rangers

in Ranger

Posted by: Aridia.3042

I would like to say that the “RNG” on pets is not really RNG. They have a set script that they follow.

When skill A is off cooldown, they use it.
When skill B is off cooldown, they use it.
When you press F2, they use Skill C.
Otherwise, they auto-attack with skill D.

It just feels random because we don’t have control over it and our brains, especially in the middle of combat, make for very poor timers for tracking those pet cooldowns.

Go to an empty sPvP arena with a 100% tank friend and let your dog attack him/her constantly. Track the time between the knockdown and cripple.

You’re right, but it might as well be RNG since you cannot control anything aside from the opening move immediately after a swap. You can make your canine leap to start, that’s about it.

No need to pray.

What makes you so sure?

I’d laugh if they’ll troll people with this though, like making the skin usable only on quivers.

I am afraid spirits health will still be sub par. Now if they were as hard to kill as a warriors banner then that would be something.

And by “as hard to kill” you mean impossible to kill, right? And mobile. And have effects which are active 100% of the time and also have no internal recharge all without being traited.

Yeah, if spirits were like that then perhaps they’d be useful. How does a physical object (a banner sticking out of the ground) not take any damage but a spirit (an ethereal, non-physical entity) does? I mean kitten at least allow me to chop a banner in half if I so wish.

If you look at the designs of the spirits, there’s no cohesive vision as to what they want to achieve.

Let’s assume you’re melee. You spawn the the spirit, you’re putting it in harms way because it’s going to get slashed and cleaved.

Let’s assume you’re range, you spawn it max range of 1500, “out of harms way”, the secondary effect of chill, immoblize, shock, etc instantly becomes worthless.

You cannot keep asking for HP being added to the spirits either. Let’s say you give them 500k HP. What you’ll end up with is a bunch of rangers circle strafing it with traps and short bow and using it as meat shield.

The only logical thing left to do is to make them invulnerable, like they should’ve been in the first place, that way you can spawn it in harms way whether you’re melee or range and have the secondary function actually be used. And giving a class where the attacks (i.e. pets) and utility could both be killed is just a bad idea.

I am sad about retaliation though because it’s something you have to be aware of. I feel great when I notice retaliation and say “NOPE NOT ATTACKING”. Don’t you? That’s a skill thing, I think. I wonder exactly why it is being nerfed, Xsorsus?

You’re on Tier 1, you should full well know why it’s being nerfed.

Every large fight starts out with the enemy casting veil, stacks of confusion on you, and the 20+ enemies from the back with no conditions rushing in to bowl over the people in the front that are on a timeout because there’s no way to cleanse immediately from having multiple stacks of conditions on them. It basically is kill yourself or sit there and be killed.

It has nothing to do with not attacking when you’re affected, that’s only applicable in 1 v 1, especially confusion even damages you when you have buffs that are procured from dodging. Like protection on roll. Confusion in mass pvp is OP and cheesy as hell, and it’s about time it got nerfed.

Going to T2 tonight and I have to disagree, confusion and retal should not have been nerfed. And as a human ranger I do not even have access to confusion. Also screws some of the anti theif warrior builds. Over all it is a poorly thought (assuming they do) plan.

You can disagree all you want. But I don’t know what else to call it aside from OP when even dodging will get you killed. No skill should mass CC like that. PVE/sPVP/WvW are different games. They need to be balanced differently and confusion was ridiculous in the hands of a zerg. There’s a reason why it was nerfed in spvp long ago. Anet was just being stubborn and not see WvW as a real game and balance it accordingly. Up until this April patch, they still counted WvW as part of PVE and refuse to nerf it because they’re afraid it’ll render it useless in PVE, that is, until they finally decided that skill splits is the only choice left in balancing.
