Arenas aren’t deathmatch! Arenas are arenas! Deathmatch would be like Courtyard aka terrible! Arenas are small fights on small maps! Small fights prevents too many people focusing down one target to automatically win the fight! Small maps prevents long, drawn out kiting and running away like in WvW!
How are they different, specifically?
IMO: Courtyard is pretty much a perfect example of “small fights on small maps”

Deathmatch like I said is like Courtyard! If you die, you respawn a short while later! Ideally you respawn instantly! You receive points for kills and whichever team reaches the score limit wins! In comparison to Courtyard, arenas are even smaller fights on even smaller maps! A good size for an arena map would be the Graveyard point and the surrounding cliffs and platforms on Legacy of the Foefire! Arena mode pits a team of 2 or 3 against another team of 2 or 3! When one team wipes, the game is over! No respawns! No score limit! No score at all!
5v5 is too big for arenas! It just turns into a clusterfudge of AoE spam! If 5 people are focusing one person, that person will explode no matter how many defensive cooldowns he has! 3v3 is the perfect amount! 2v2s can also work well! A person can survive attacks from 3 people and his teammates can peel and put counter pressure on the enemy team without it devolving into a zerg AoE spamfest!
On the other hand 5v5 is too small for deathmatch! Deathmatch works best on a large map with many players! 5v5 works well with objective based PvP like conquest but is just too small for a deathmatch brawl to be any kind of fun! And then we have the Courtyard map itself! The issue with Courtyard is that it goes by conquest rules because while Anet implemented a deathmatch map, they did not implement deathmatch rules! Then they just stuck it into a conquest rotation and you wonder why most people hate it! The respawn timer is too long! The map is plagued with terrain bugs and wacky camera angles!

what are you basing these on?
Conquest needs to match 10 people! 3v3 arenas only need to match 6! Shorter queue times!
Conquest games are essentially slow countdowns to 500 points! All you need to do in arenas is slay the other team! Look at the weekly 2v2 tournaments that Mistpedia hosts! The match durations are but a fraction of the 5v5 conquest games! Fast matches = more reward track progress win or lose!
so here’s an analogy: conquest/stronghold and other objective-based modes are like football or baseball, whereas deathmatch style PvP, is like playing catch.
it’s fine to enjoy both kinds of activities, the problem is when you keep trying to frame the discussion around deathmatch being the “real PvP”.

There are only 2 types of people that get mad at turret Engis! The first one is the bad player! Maybe he’s new to PvP! Maybe he’s a veteran but still doesn’t have a good grasp on PvP mechanics! Regardless, as a turret Engi you killed him because he is a bad player and so he will start madtyping!
The other type is the good player! He’s pretty good at PvP, has good mechanical skills and understands where he needs to be at any given moment and why he needs to be there! Unfortunately he got stuck with you, a turret Engi, on his team! Then your team loses because the other team has common sense and play around you and you can’t do anything about it because all you can do is Hip Shot! Then this player will start madtyping!
Of course it’s your game my frand so play however you want to play it whether it’s bad builds, troll builds, meta builds, or whatever! As long as you have fun!

If arenas are boring, then play conquest or the new stronghold when it comes out! I’m not saying get rid of these things! Obviously some people for some reason still enjoy conquest as the only game mode after 2 and a half years! And many people will enjoy the new stronghold mode! Mainly because it’s the only game mode released after 2 and a half freakin years!
Frankly, I’ve got nothing against 2v2 and 3v3, but don’t come and tell us it’s esport. There’s no strategy, no team work, only gross mechanical skill. Maybe I should write to the FIFA and tell them “hey, your game is so complicated, it’s never gonna be a sport, just do penalties, nobody cares about defense and all this stuff”.
Arenas are esports! The proof is that in the past there have been many cash prize arena tournaments with lots of teams playing in them! Where are the conquest tournaments! There has been only one and it was the GW2 WTS tournament! The one where only 4 teams participated lol! Anet gave away way too much money to this tiny PvP scene in an attempt to gather more players! Well nobody new wants to play conquest! The proof is in the twitch views! The proof is in the bad matchmaking! The proof is in the tiny, stagnant competitive scene!
And as for “no skill or strategy in arenas”, well that is just a silly statement!
All this is only concerning esports! When you talk about arenas in regards to the general playerbase, there are even more positives!

You do realize that ‘lane orientated games’ (MOBAs) are actually the leading game types of esports right? Just a couple more viewers than arena type games..

Who said anything about splitting ranked arenas into 3 different team sizes! There will be only one ranked/unranked queue and that’s 2v2 or 3v3 arenas or maybe both! Conquest and Stronghold should be relegated to hotjoins as they are just casual PvP game modes that nobody cares about! And if you do care about them, well you can still play them! Nothing will be changed! And you also haven’t considered the huge influx of PvPers to Guild Warts 2 because of the arena addition! I have thought this through and there are literally no cons!

If you want to win queues by yourself you have to carry your team! Interrupt stomps, cleave downed bodies, revive your teammates, and neut points! Sometimes even if you do all these things, your team might be just a bunch of PvE-ers or WvW-ers or just new to the game and there is just nothing you can do! You can never know who you’ll be matched up with because the matchmaking is pretty bad! Also you’ll want to better your own skillz! You can’t always expect to be blameless if you lose!

Silly Melon! Did you really think healing bombs would work well! Even with full healing gear you only heal for like 300 per bomb! Not gonna help much against 50 people mashing their AoE buttons in your face!
You should run Hiba’s cele build! It plays identically to cele builds in PvP when roaming and has enough durability and 2k+ power to work well in the boring ole zerg! Incendiary Powder can be swapped for Enhance Performance or Explosive Powder in the zerg since single target burning is less than ideal versus many targets!

I think a lot of these issues can be solved by simply moving Power Wrench to grandmaster tier! It would reduce the damage of Prybar, which hits for like 3-5k with might stacks on a cele build lol, and it would make it so you can’t trait for 20 second Magnets and 16 second Gear Shields unless you give up Alchemy sustain, which you won’t and shouldn’t! After all, Tool Kit is one of the most powerful kits the Engineer has and is definitely deserving of grandmaster status! We can then swap Gadgeteer to the master tier which would buff gadgets! But not really since Gadgeteer is absolutely balls! We all know gadgets need more buffs!

What I use in PvP to moderate success! I would probably have less success if the matchmaking wasn’t absolutely terrible and pairs me up with newbies because the build, and any build that doesn’t run a kit, is bad! It’s a just for fun build!

I think slick shoes is pretty much in line with elixier s and e-gun. E-gun is the best 1on1 option with the most utility. Elixier s is the best teamfight option for save stomps and disengages. Slick shoes is kinda right between, with additional CC plus the shortest stunbreak, but less utility than e-gun and worse disengage than elixier s. I think all 3 have their uses and are pretty much on par.
I dont see guaranteed kills due to slick shoes either. There are also other options to handle slick shoes than blinks or stability. You can simply stand still(maybe pop a block i.e.) and wait it out, if you dont move(!). Plus im very sure you can dodge over if the oil is around you and not right under your feet.
No offense, but this sounds like a l2p issue if you die each time you get slick shoed… 0o
Egun is probably the worst out of the 3! And lol! Stand still! Yes let’s stand still while being pelted by grenades and prybars and then more cc from rifle! And that’s just from a 1v1! In a teamfight or skirmish, let’s see how long you last standing still inside a nearly inescapable cc trap while being focused by multiple people! Good luck my frand! And this is all with the shortest cooldown stunbreak in the game BY FAR! And it also recharges at low health! Jokes!

My frand Chaith! You misunderstand! I think how it works is fine if there’s a gap in the oil ring of death that you can dodge through! Slick Shoes is after all a trapping skill! Like I said, the difference is you can move and dodge around in Ring of Warding and Static Field whereas a Slick Shoes trap is practically a guaranteed death since you literally can’t do anything without stab or blinks! This is why I suggested that there be a cap on how many oil puddles that can be created! I don’t think a rework would be necessary if that were the case and I don’t think it’s a change that would kill off Slick Shoes!

25 second stunbreak is absolutely insane! The stunbreak cooldown was just fine before! Nobody ran Slick Shoes because even though the utility was really strong, it had a 60 second cooldown! That’s pretty bad! Lowering the cooldown to 45 seconds was a good change but in combination with the crazy low stunbreak cooldown, it made the utility as a whole just too powerful! The proof is that nearly every single cele Engi player both high and low tier runs this utility after the patch when nobody ran it at all before!
I think the stunbreak cooldown should be reverted to 45 seconds and cap the amount of oil puddles that you can spawn to 4! This means as soon as you put down a 5th oil puddle, the first one disappears! As soon as you put down a 6th oil puddle, the second one disappears and so on! Having mile long trails of unblockable, undodgeable knockdowns is anti fun! And it gives other people the opportunity to dodge out of the oily ring of death! Dodging is supposed to evade attacks! There shouldn’t be a single attack in the game you can’t dodge out of with the exception of trap attacks like Static Field and Ring of Warding! But even those two skills allow dodging and being active inside! And you can stunbreak out of them if you want to break free! You can do none of these things inside a Slick Shoes grease ring of death! If you’re a poor soul without stability or blinks, all you can do is die!
Yes Elixir S is great! Vee Wee agrees!

Lol my frand DD Elementalists will still be strong! Might is still a valuable boon and Elementalists will still be able to stack up an amazing amount for themselves and their team! They will still be able to heal and cleanse silly amounts of condis off themselves and their team! They will still be very durable with permanent vigor and crazy sustain and protection uptime! Their offense was toned down which is good because no bunker should be able to output the damage that current DD Elementalists can do! Totally nerfed is a gross exaggeration since they will still have loads of burning, damage, and sustain!

Slick Shoes are definitely OP right now. I can cancel the self knockback on every other overcharged shot with super speed for some ridiculous burst, decimate any thieves/mesmers that have popped their blink, and still have super speed up to escape if things go south due to it recharging instantly at 25% HP. It’s a 4-6 second AoE chain knockdown in a meta without high stability uptime combined with the game’s best stunbreak. I’d say that’s definitely on the OP side. Super Speed needs a cooldown increase for sure, though I’d say put it at 38-40s instead of 45.
Slick Shoes is pretty in-line with E-Gun and Elixir S. When Super Speed was 45 toolbelt, and 60 on the utility, it wasn’t brought.
Equipping E-Gun over Slick Shoes gives you significantly more 1v1 sustain, with only a 10s longer CD on stunbreak. In a 1v1 against Thieves you pretty much cannot die if you bring E-gun. Elixir S brings so much team utility via stealthing allies, and invuln stomp/res, -or- a stealth pull that’s just as lethal as a CC lock if you use the pull to combo with your allies.
It wouldn’t take much to upset the balance, I think a Gadget being good is #winning.
Slick Shoes is easily the most powerful of the 3! It basically guarantees a kill in a teamfight, and can almost guarantee a 1v1 kill against anyone without stability or blinks! Super Speed is the shortest cooldown stunbreak in the game by A LOT at 25 seconds with the standard 60044 cele build and it recharges when you have low health! That’s just crazy! What I proposed is for a maximum of 3-4 oil puddles out at once! You will still be able to encircle some poor soul with your greasy death trap but you won’t be able to leave tons of giant unblockable movement impeding death barriers all over the place! And the cooldown for the stunbreak is just way too short! 25 seconds really! C’mon now my frand Chaith! Even at 45 seconds base, the cooldown will be 35 seconds that recharges when your health gets low! That’s still one of the shortest cooldown stunbreaks in the entire game! Vee Wee is not proposing radical changes!

cele ele isn’t really all that op, they are actually pretty healthy they have counters and counter other classes. condi engi on the other hand only countered by another condi engi and longbow ranger, and counter every one else.

Celestial has 25% more stats. It is that simply. If you can use all those stats then you are just 25% better.
Its “math”. There is nothing else to it. There is no debate. Celestial amulet provides too many stats. Nothing will change. Their sustain is the main problem. They will still out last everything.
Uh… Celestial provides more stats because every single stat is much lower than even the secondary stats on other amulets! Celestial performs much worse than bunker amulets when you talk about sustain and much worse than Berserker or Rabid when you talk about offense! The issue with Celestial is that with might stacking, you have the damage of an offensive amulet with extra defensive stats that synergize well with defensive traits! So yes while the Celestial Amulet numbers should be shaved down a tiny bit, your math is just wrong!
The reason its hard in a 2vs 2 vs an ele/engi is because of the sustain. They simply tank everything and outlast you. The longer the fight goes on the more their additional stats (from celestial) take effect. The result is that they just win the fights.
Eles are pretty beefy but Engis are fragile! They don’t have nearly as much protection if at all, don’t have 100% vigor uptime, are extremely weak to condis, don’t trait 100% for defense and still deal high damage! What are you even saying bro! Engi tanks! Good joke!
But it is irrelevant at this point. Everyone knows Grouch and other devs main engi. Everyone knows they are friendly with NA players who abuse engi/ele. Everyone knows there is real money up for grabs. So the result is that engi/ele/celestial will continue to be protected. If you dont play these classes then good luck carrying kitten.

They also did NOTHING to fix the turret engi issue. It is still too strong at all levels except for the very high end matches.
Cele rifle engi still does need some toning down. 2 seconds off the bleed is not enough.
Turret Engis are garbage and aren’t an issue! Cele Engi still needs toning down I agree! But they did more than just shave 2 seconds off the bleed! The might and Battle Sigil changes will be pretty noticible! Celestial does pretty poop damage without might, and the Engi’s only way of stacking might was through Battle Sigil! The total amount of power/condi damage they get from might will literally be halved!

From a PvP standpoint:
Scavenging Runes will be really good for condi Engi, especially if you combine it with Leeching Sigil! 62042 – Rabid Amulet – Elixir S/Slick Shoes + Tool Kit + Grenade Kit – Pistol/Pistol – Geomancy/Leeching!
Sigil of Torment is a nice addition to a condi Engi’s asrenal (<- lol if you swap the S and R it’s censored)! The damage is pretty mediocre but it provides a cover condition for your burns/bleeds and it’s AoE!
Launch Battering Ram daze is a nice buff to #gadgetmeta! Unfortunately gadget builds are still pretty subpar in comparison to meta builds! The big issue is taking multiple gadgets over kits which will always be inferior and unfortunately that’s not gonna be changed anytime soon! A good step would be to start buffing gadget traits and not the gadgets themselves! Most of them are already pretty good except AED! AED sucks!
Throw Mine received a nice boost but it’s still pretty inferior to everything else and will still be only taken for one trick pony burst builds which are extremely rare anyway (because it’s bad lol)!

Yippee! It’s a nice little buff! It can be pretty significant if you manage to daze them after you hit them with Net Shot to prevent blocking subsequent burst, similar to the power Necro Dark Pact > Wells > Wail of Doom combo! I know if I ever get immobilized, the first thing I’m doing is whipping out Gear Shield!

Grenade and Bomb Kit both deal a lot of condition damage! While you could use Fire/Air for some kind of burst build, these kits benefit more from might stacking as might increases power and condition damage! Also might stacking received a huge buff a few patches ago with the introduction of Hoelbrak and Strength Runes! You can stack an enormous amount of might with just Sigil of Battle alone! Save Fire/Air for burst builds like Static Discharge! If you really wanted to use a grenade burst build, you can always try Steamhawke’s really old Grenade/SD build! 60026! Fire/Air + Pack Runes!

Eh I don’t think blight will be that good for Engi in PvP, but it really depends on how much poison is applied per tick! If it’s only 2 seconds of poison every 8 seconds assuming they stand in the field then I think it will be pretty bad! Doom has 6 seconds of poison every 9 seconds with the duration going up to 7 by just going 30 explosives, which every meta build runs! It’s impossible for blight to go up because the field expires after 2 seconds! You’d need 100% condi duration for it to go up to 4 seconds and even then Doom will be better!

This would make engi bunker so over powered. If someone can check I’d love to know.
This set is not in PvP! And even if it was, it wouldn’t be that good on a bunker Engi anyway! First bunker Engis themselves aren’t that good because of a lack of stability! The whole point of a bunker is to stay on node and stomp/revive! You can’t do any of these things without stab! Second, Engis are extremely vulnerable to condis and if you stay on node as a bunker should, you will be condi bombed! Third, 1 sec of regen is pretty poor incentive to use a major defensive cooldown and even if you count the aegis procs you get, it’s only like an extra 700 healing every minute as opposed to something like Backpack Regen which is almost 8000! That’s pretty bad! Lastly, I don’t know how much the 6 piece bonus heals for, but unless it’s a major heal 30 seconds cooldown is too long! Melandru is still a way better rune for bunker Engis if you do decide to bunk! I have and I can hold off 1v2s for a long time but I can just do the same thing as a condi Engi except I’ll be able to beat people instead of stalemate!

Are you motivated by these prizes to get better? The only players that truly seem to be motivated to answer hard questions and break their legs to grow an inch are Dodge or Die, everyone else just lacks the will
It’s hard to get motivated to play tournaments when they’re set up so as a rookie team you have to face people who are way better than you on stream! Nobody wants to get wrecked live in front of thousands, sorry hundreds of people! Tiers are the answer to this problem as every single game that has matchmaking and that has tournaments have a tier system! You don’t take a high school basketball team and make them face the Knicks (and then subsequently reward the Knicks for winning lol)! Unfortunately the game population doesn’t even support a tier system! If you look at the recent tournaments there are only a handful of teams that play! I think if Mistpedia or ESL created some kind of tier system, it would encourage more PvPers to play in these tournaments because they would play against other people of the same skill level! If you then increase the rewards higher tiered players receive, it would incentivize players to get better and we can start having a more competitive scene! The competitive scene right now is like 3-4 teams at most over 6 continents! Sorry that’s just sad!
And then there’s the other issue of game being stale, one game mode after 2 and a half years, slow balance patches, etc but I digress! The thread is getting off topic! The original topic is about Backpack posing as a 3rd party to try explain the failings of the leaderboard! I mean I agree the leaderboards are pretty terrible, but lol @ this method!

This is just a theory but try looking away from them so that they’re not on your screen anymore! Then look back and they’ll be in their real position! One time Vee Wee tried to stomp a desync’d Engi and he blew me up and I didn’t see him on my screen anymore! And then when I looked back at him he was in a different position!

Why not! There’s already unofficial arena tournaments hosted by “official shoutcasters”! That just proves it works! Meanwhile the fact that after two and a half years this game only has one goshdarn game mode in PvP is killing it, among other things! Don’t let Courtyard fool you! That map is just a terrible, oversized, 5v5 cluttered, poorly implemented deathmatch map! That’s not arenas!
Wasn’t World of Warcraft esportz at one time! They sure as hell weren’t playing poopy butt conquest! Anet should shift balance focus, map creation focus, and just their overall focus to arenas, the PvP mode where you actually PvP and where player skill is way more important! Conquest doesn’t have to go, but they should put it where it belongs! Casual hotjoins!
