Hello frands! Vee Wee here, retired #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80! I am here with another build by me! Vee Wee! As with most Vee Wee builds, if you take this game very seriously then this build may not be for you! But if you want to have fun with the Flamethrower, give it a try!
Basically the Flamethrower has been my favorite kit ever since I started playing this game back in beta 2012! But I was always disappointed at how weak it was! Well over the years Anet has buffed it and even though it’s still not so great, we can make it work! Here is the build!

Welp my frands I wish I could tell you that this build is new and exciting but everything is what you’d expect! Air/Fire runes turn lackluster Flame Jet damage into decent burst! The Alchemy tree is the undisputed best trait line that the Engineer has! Every single Engineer build can become more successful with points into Alchemy! And it doesn’t hurt that Deadly Mixture is in the Alchemy line and gives a whopping +15% damage to the Flamethrower! Pack Runes are the best runes for power oriented builds with low precision!
To play this build, like all rifle builds you want to set up combos! Your combo moves are Net Shot, Overcharge Shot, Magnet, and Air Blast! It may seem obvious but if you land these attacks, you’ll be able to land more hits afterwards! You can hit them, and then use another one of your combo moves to continue your combo! If you get lucky and hit them all, you can literally 100-0 most glassy builds! Here is video of a full combo!

In between combos, simply stay alive and use Flame Jet and Flame Blast for damage and to proc Air/Fire Sigils! This build is an excellent decapper! With Air Blast, Overcharge Shot, Magnet, and Net Shot, it’s literally impossible to not score a decap very quickly!
This build is very weak to retal! If facing someone with retal, it’s usually better to use Hip Shot instead of Flame Jet! Remember the bulk of your damage is combo burst and Air/Fire Sigils! Like most Engi builds, in a skirmish or teamfight, do not ever stand on the point unless you have to! This is especially important since you are pretty fragile! Do. Not. Stand. On. Point! Like all Engi builds, this one is weak to conditions! Use your Healing Turret wisely! You are also weak to Meditation Guardians and Thieves! These two builds really wreck other berserker builds so don’t feel too bad!

You may be wondering why I am not running any points into Firearms in a Flamethrower oriented build! Well because in my opinion, the Firearms tree stinks! Juggernaut stinks! Fireforged Trigger is great though, but not necessary! However if you wanted to run Juggernaut, I’d go with this! Just know I think it’s a weaker build!

Elixir Gun and Slick Shoes can be used instead of Elixir S! Slick Shoes is one of the strongest utilities the Engineer has and is pretty overpowdered while Elixir Gun can have its moments from poison and down body cleave, to team condi removal, to permanent weakness on a target!

I answered the question and gave numbers! 1600 power = bad! 700 condi damage with condi runes = bad! Combined with no might stacks to improve stats = bad! No cele Engi has ever performed well with condi runes in any tournament = bad!

The cele Engi build is just the old berserker meta tweaked for hybrid damage and so it doesn’t die in 2 hits! The 1600 power you have in a cele build without power runes is terrible! Might as well have no power at all and go full condi except the condi stats are also bad, and there is no might stacking to improve either stat! Also no cele Engi has ever been successful in any tournament running condi runes, and there have been plenty! Of course we could chalk that up to the competitive scene being nonexistent but meh! Take from that what you will!

I think a fair change would be to keep the initial roots unblockable but make subsequent root entangles blockable! I also think the roots have too much health and it should be lowered slightly!

There’s no way for people to get better at the game! The population is small and this results in terrible matchmaking! Even brand new players will get matched with veterans and games end up heavily one sided! There’s no way for teams to get better because ranks/leagues are nonexistent and tournaments don’t have a tier system! If a newer team is interested in playing in a tournament, they’d have to face the best teams in the world, of which there are like 3 which brings me to my next point of…
There is no competitive scene! It’s like ~20 people in the WORLD! In CSGO a minor EU tournament will draw tens of thousands of twitch viewers and dozens of teams! In Guild Warts a world tournament has 4 teams! Woo! Arenanet should’ve taken that prize money and used it to fund new additions to the game instead of funding some college kid’s beer money!
And then there’s other things like balance, frequency of balance patches, long queue times with nothing to do, boring game mode, etc etc etc it’s all been said before! I don’t think Stronghold will do anything for PvP! The huge surge of players into PvP won’t mean much when it’s just going to be a bunch of WvWers slaying NPCs! They advertised that you don’t even have to be good at PvP to play Stronghold! The only way to breathe new life into PvP is to get more people and incentivize them to stay and actually get better! Without this, you’ll just have what happened before with the reward tracks and dailies: a bunch of terrible PvE-ers come into PvP and don’t care about it at all and just farm for achievement points or reward track progress! That does more harm than good for the PvP community!
Anyway I don’t know why I typed this because it’s all pointless! Everything all been said before and ignored! Oh wells! Back to slaying zambies!

Most of the gadgets are already pretty good! Kits are always going to be most optimal playstyle for Engi! If you buff gadgets, people will just take these super powered up gadgets with kits! Just look at what happened with Slick Shoes! They way overbuffed that skill and now it’s taken with kits for a super overpowdered time! Certain gadgets like Throw Mine and AED are pretty terrible but the rest of them are not so bad!
What needs to be buffed are the traits! The gadget traits are terrible! And there is no reason to take them over other traits in the Tools line! And there’s not enough gadget traits! If you look at Thief traits, there’s 5 traits that deal with venoms and 8 traits that affect Steal! Gadgets only have 2 and they are both just awful! Awful!

Removing the stunbreak is silly! The cooldown needs to be increased back to 45 seconds but removing it is silly! Traited the stunbreak is at 23 seconds making it one of the shortest stunbreak cooldowns in the game and it resets at low health! The puddles should cap at 5! When you spawn a 6th puddle, the first puddle should disappear! Vee Wee has been saying this for a long time now! But nobody listens to Vee Wee!

It seems like the idea from this thread is this:
- Doom is strong because celestial is the meta. It’s a necessary evil to counter those builds.
- Energy is another necessary evil to make up for a lack of defense in certain classes (Mesmer, necromancer mostly)
- Fire and Air is mostly seen as too much.
Is that about right?
I have some other questions about this topic:
- It’s hard to bring up Doom without also bringing up celestial. If celestial wasn’t the meta and instead we were back to an old meta (Two bunkers, 3 DPS or maybe the Decap meta), do you think we’d still be calling this sigil OP?
- Let’s say Air was changed to be 5 stacks of vulnerability for 5s, thus removing this combo. Do you think any builds in particular would no longer be viable? Try to ignore what my example for Air is here. Assume that air would be balanced, but still deal no damage.
- Energy sigil is fairly uncommon now I’ve found. In the past with builds like the Decap engineer or Bunker Guardian, it was very strong and downright annoying. We’ve now sort of stepped away from that bunker meta and only glassy classes take it (Shatter mesmer, S/D thief). Do you think this is the same case as the Doom sigil in that it’s only seen as underpowered because the meta has shifted this way?
The “old meta”? You mean the meta we have now and have always had since the launch of this game? 2 Ele/Warrior bunkers with 3 damage dealers/roamers! Except because of power creep, celestial Elementalists and Warriors are better than the old Guardian bunkers! Slightly less survivability for way more teamfight, damage, and mobility potential! Also what the heck was the decap meta? You mean decap Engis? A useless build that never won anything ever?
But if you want to talk about sigils, Doom always has been and will always be powerful because conquest! Conquest involves standing on points and if you want to stand on a point successfully, you need to be a beefy bruiser or bunker and if you want to do that, you need sustain! There will always be a high sustain build because that’s how the game and game mode are balanced!
That Air Sigil change is terrible! Nobody would use it!
The bunkers, aka Warriors and Elementalists, of this meta don’t use Energy because they already have permanent vigor! Energy Sigil has much less value on those that are inherently tanky with tons of dodges already!
Basically if you dislike celestial builds, you’ll find nerfing Doom and Energy buffs the same builds you dislike! The logic!

Overcharge Shot is not a high risk move! The self knockdown is so short it doesn’t matter! That’s assuming you miss your instant cast 3 second CC and that’s a very big if! And even if you do miss! Ooops! It’s back up in 12 seconds! If that’s not broken then…

The only reason why people use Doom is because of high sustain meta builds! Nerfing Doom is a buff to these classes and a buff to sustain-y builds! Nobody wants that!
None of the S tier classes use Energy sigil! Nerfing Energy Sigil is a buff to the Celestial Amulet builds that you dislike so much!

Both are extremely strong in WvW and PvP! Neither are that good in PvE but you can run it there if you want and still beat it! Celestial will deal more damage there! Knights armor with Celestial accessories + weapon is the best combo I’ve found! Full Celestial deals below average damage!

That’s a good question my frand Rude! Because it’s not a bunker at all! Some people don’t know what bunkers are I guess! A bunker is a build for conquest PvP that can stand on node to prevent caps or decaps! If you try to stand on node as a condi Engi well… it will end poorly for you!
Anyway I think your build is fine for WvW! Undead Runes aren’t that great! Sigil of Bursting isn’t that good either! You can try for Scavenging or Balthazar or Nightmare or Adventurer or Perplexity or Antitoxin! Those are all pretty strong WvW runes! You should run Geomancy instead of Bursting! Geomancy is one of the strongest sigils for condi builds if not the strongest and it works fantastically on Engi!
For dungeons, this build could work! But really anything could work in PvE because of how hilariously easy it is! Unfortunately your damage won’t be the best! Condition builds aren’t really that great for PvE!

Sorry there is no PvP mode where the primary objective is to PvP! The devs have confirmed that they probably won’t be releasing any arenas for at least 2 years if at all! Will this game really be around in 2 years though! That’s the question!
People throw out Courtyard but lol Courtyard is so bad! WvW is pretty terrible too! Run run run run run run! Win a 5v1 because people who play WvW are generally not so good! The meta builds work fine! Condi or Cele rifle! The past teams with Engi that have had success have been condi/cele Engi + condi Necro and cele Engi + DD cele Ele! Though that’s not really saying much because the competitive scene is extremely tiny and the same team wins every week!

I don’t like the answers. I don’t want the game to screw me over because of trolls. I don’t trust a complex system from other MMORPG because their stealth system is completely different.
Yeah their stealth mechanic is completely different in that they can stealth forever without traiting for it! You don’t see issues there do you! That’s because it’s a nonissue! A team that stays in stealth doesn’t win! Get good son!
But none of this matters! Anet has already stated that arenas will never be a thing! And if even they were to release arenas, it wouldn’t be for another few years because they are too goshdarn slow at doing anything! 1+ year to fix Skyhammer after an overwhelming negative response from the community! And even after the Skyhammer changes, the map still blows! #TheAnetWay!

This is code for years, which is so incredibly foolish given the amount of new players that this game mode will attract! Arena style PvP is by far the most popular form of PvP in MMOs and the most competitive! Oh wellz back to CSGO! What a goshdarn shame!

Geomancy is one of the best sigils for condition classes and condi Engi is no exception! There’s a reason why pretty much every single condi build in the game runs Geomancy! Combining Shrapnel Grenade, Geomancy, and Shrapnel and Sharpshooter procs can stack over 10 bleeds on a target in about 2 seconds! That’s over 1200 damage per second and that’s not even counting your 650 damage per second burns, confusion, poison etc!
Geomancy also combos very well with Magnet! What I like to do is Magnet > Prybar > swap to pistols to proc Geomancy Sigil > Static Shot for an undodgeable 3+ stacks of bleed, 7 stacks of confusion, blind, and burning!
Basically if you are playing a condi Engi, Geomancy will really help you to perform well against good players and just absolutely destroys not so good players!

Is that build viable in PvE and WvW?
This build isn’t really optimal in PvE! Technically you could use it because PvE in this game is hilariously easy but your damage output will be pretty low in comparison to other builds! Condition builds in general aren’t really that good in PvE!
The build works great roaming in WvW! There are some alterations I’d make for WvW! I’d run something like this! Food buffs make condi Engi a monster when roaming! You can beat almost anything 1v1 and you have plenty of disengages and mobility to run away if you’re overwhelmed! This build won’t be that great in zergs! Condition builds in general I find are weak in zergs!

I think Carrion works just fine. There is nice synergy between the added vitality and the 6 piece rune bonus. But I’d use 60062 instead of 62042 like this:

The reason I prefer Rabid is because I think it has better stats. With Carrion you have to sacrifice a sigil slot for Intelligence Sigil to make use of Incendiary Powder. Geomancy is one of the strongest sigils for condi builds if not the strongest, and I hate to give it up.
Carrion has no toughness at all which means Mesmers, Thieves, Medi Guards, and any other power class and even celestial will just rip right through you. In my opinion, all Carrion Engi builds need to run Protection Injection or even Protective Shield. This leaves you without the pistol cooldown trait which means less poison and burn uptime.
But like I said, Carrion would work fine. I don’t think it will work as well as Rabid, but builds aren’t set in stone and there are definitely perks to using Carrion over Rabid. Run whatever you like my frand.

The patch hit yesterday and I didn’t even know! So I logged in and wanted to test my theory of Scavenging Runes Engi in PvP! The results: fantabulous! Here is the build!

The site isn’t updated with the actual rune yet so just pretend I have it in there!
This is a pretty standard P/P condi Engi and the playstyle is the same! The difference is the significant boon to your sustain from your 3 lifesteal procs! And it adds a nice bit of damage! 974 per proc!
The lifesteal procs don’t stack! This means that if you have a Leeching Sigil proc ready to go and you heal for the Scavenging Rune lifesteal proc, you will only lifesteal once on your next hit! Try not to overlap lifesteal procs!
In comparison to Vee Wee’s Adventurer Runes Condi Engi build, this build has no Protection Injection! Protection Injection is really useful against the 50 billion Thieves and celestial Engis that are out there! Be more cautious when fighting these classes if you are transitioning from Vee Wee’s Adventurer Runes Condi Engi build!

While many regard this version as meta, I am not a fan! Against meta comps, there are so many forms of AoE condi removal and just condi removal in general! DD Eles! Engi Healing Turrets! Shoutbows! Not to mention the super long burns that you place on yourself from Necro condi transfers! The added burn duration, while really powerful, I feel is just wasted against all these forms of condi removal and team support! That’s just my opinion anyway! It’s why I ran Adventurer Runes and now Scavenging Runes!
And as always, don’t stand on point unless you have to! You are more fragile than you think!
Roam a lot! You have permanent swiftness to roam between points and +1 a fight to explode someone with condis! This is how you carry a team if solo queueing!
