Sure, everything ingame is related to the gem store. If you are willing to spend several hundreds of euros buying gems (the gems-to-gold ratio is terrible atm).
If there is anyone who is willing to sponsor Anet for that amount for a few shiney pixels, sure, they can have their shiny pixels. It’s not like the legendaries give you an advantage otherwise. I really don’t mind. I chuckle and move on, shaking my head at the waste of money, and have some admiration for those who managed to get a legendary without buying them with real life cash.
But I bet my left leg that most people are not willing to waste that much money on a fictional rainbow shooting unicorn bow in a non-existent fantasy world.

Wrong legendaries dogive you an advanatge maybe not currently but as Mike and Chris have both stated they will in the not to distant future when they get updated to the new tier of weapons and beyond. legendary weapons and armor (when released) will always stay current with each content update/expansion making them virtually the last item you’ll ever need.
Its as simple as this… grinding gold cuts into their revenue earning potential. The last thing they want to do is have you trade gold you farmed for gems instead of purchasing them through their store. Is this explanation clear enough for you?
whats really dumbfounding is why on earth Lions Arch , why not Hoelbrak, Rata Sum, Black Citadel hell even The Grove is AN deliberately trying to crash the game servers theres already overloading upon overloading in LA.
Bots used for gold farming is becoming passe they have evolved into entire guilds that farm dungeons its where the money is and they can do this totally anomously also guild leaders selling guild gold is also being utilized as well. To combat bot dungeon farming there needs to be lockouts.
Wardrobe in WOW is full of fail. The only way to implement one in GW2 would be to make it optional such as a popup, “X player is a noisy S.O.B and wants to see your gear do you accept” [yes or no]
What annoys the hell out of me is the kitten respawn rate, its like AN thinks theres a milion+ people out in the world all fighting over mob kills. I actually timed some respawn rates getting the Cathedral of Silence POI last night on the spiders and elelmentals, 20 second respawns is just ludicrous.
A lockout timer would serve multiple purposes for FotM until they can implement it in other parts of the game. 1 it would serve as a gate to gear progression. 2 it would help other aspects of the game that has been deserted since patch.
Personally I would like to see a lockout for FotM after level 15 of atleast 3 days, level20 5 days, levels 1 -14 could be 24 hour.
What this game needs is a hardcoded lock out timer on FotM say 5-7 days. That would serve 2 purposes, repopulate the world and gate gear progression. Think I’ll start proposing this in suggestions forum.

Its not unknown they stated it very clearly this week in the interview. They said they will not be catering to just one specific type of players, but will focus on filling both player types expectations.
It really blows my mind how many people fail to gather and read information. They are not marketing and catering to people that want no progression they are not marketing and catering to people that want progression. They are finding a middle ground to satisfy both crowds.
Perhaps a little patience is in order from the community so see how it further developes…. or is that too much to ask?
Its not about reading comphrension its about, “why should we believe a company that has displayed a lack of integity and will lie, cheat and steal”. There was a reason why the man who cried wolf ended up being ate by the wolf.
If that middle ground involves stat progression how is that compromising to the player that wants horizontal progression, to me its caving to the vertical progression argument and that is not a compromise.

They’ll have to do like you said Vindictus does, and sell infusions that give you an extra +5 to stats and agony resistance (beyond whatever the max-level infusion will give)
They won’t sell actual gear on the gem store. They won’t sell runes on the gem store. That isn’t what the gem store is for.
If you’re going to start assuming things like that, let’s see how much further we can take this.

There is a difference between a misread manifesto and “giving players an advantage by using the gem store”.
That was the whole point of the manifesto. Gear would not determine a characters power level skill would thats exactly why exotics we easily attained and legendaries were exotics with fancy skins so if AN had adhered to their manifesto it wouldnt pf matter if you could buy a premade, fully exotic level 80 because we were all suppose to be the same gear wise.

Perpetually giving the best weapon in the game because you farmed a weapon once 20 years ago is horsekitten, one weapon is all you’ll need for the next umten years through patch and expansions thats like buying a yugo in 1976 then getting a Ferrai in 2013 for free.

If you were to have followed this whole fiasco you would of heard Chris and Mike both state " the current power of legendaries will be updated" meaning they plan to increase their stats because if you apply the current stat cost to ascended weapons it would mean that the ascended weapons would have more stat allocation making them more powerful that current legendaries so it begs to question will everyone get their legendary updated to the new system and if so seeing as how current legendaries are nothing more than exotics with fancy skins why cant exotics be updated as well.
Counter to your counter, Jade Quarry, Anvil Rock, Kaineng,Isle of Janthir, Henge of Denravi all 50-75% contested in Orr maybe 2 Temples open out of all 5 servers and thats not even taking into consideration the leveling zones.

I would counter-argue that it’s not the game’s problem, but yours, the player’s. Why aren’t you running FotM? You can’t force people to do content they don’t want to do. If the majority of players want to do dungeons, but you want to experience areas of the open world that are designed for group play, it’s tough luck for you. After people have geared up, chances are a certain percentage of players will return to where they were before. You not participating in FotM actively slows down the rate at which players acquire the new gear. This is an MMO. Stop thinking about yourself and do something for the greater good!

No this is not an isloated case of low pop server this is common maybe not as drastic but very common to see 50-75% of the world of Tyria in a contested state. I’ve been making new characters on every server and this is the common theme.
I wonder if anyone of these people at AN have children of their own. I have 5 kids and I learned very early on that even on one of their birthdays you never EVER bring home something special for one and not the others, imagine bringing home one ice cream cone and choosing only one of your children to give it too.
This patch did exactly that…purist, casual and pvper got no ice cream cone and you wonder why power creep got beat up.

Anet has done something which no other MMO appears to do properly: takes exploiters and botters seriously and ban them. The big trains are completely gone. This is a major achievement.
Even in WoW there are constantly bots in BGs making your team lose, bots farming gold, exploiters everywhere, even at the top of the arena ladders. Blizzard has failed to ban them and continues to allow bots to impact on other players.
So here’s from me:
A kudos to ArenaNet for doing something that is very important for legitimate players, thanks for banning all those bots that plague the MMO and general online gaming world.
Wow has banned more botters/exploiters than there are GW2 players your comparison is invalid. You’re naive to think they are completely gone just because theyaren’t in Orr doesn’t mean they’re gone.

If you aren’t going to support open world then turn the kitten respawn rate down a few notches. Having to solo dynamic events since you forced everyone into dungeons FotM to be exact needs to be address the days of needing 40 ppl to do Temple events are over thanks to “Lost Shores”. So please adjust open world content accordingly.
How true are the following statements for you on a scale of 0 to 5?
1) I felt like I had little to do once my main character hit level 80, I got full exotic gear and 100% world completion. By the time of the patch my enthusiasm for the game had already lost a lot of momentum and I was really looking forward to new content.
2) Obtaining ascended gear gives me something new to aim for and boosts/refreshes my enthusiasm for GW2.
3)The lack of a tier after exotic is something that always bothered me. I feel that equipping my toon with better and better gear is something I look forward to in a game and that element was missing from GW2.
4) I believe that future paid expansion packs should introduce new tiers of gear.
5) In my wishlist of things to come for GW2 three months after its release (new areas/foes/weapons/events/skills, fixing bugs, tweaking class balance, anything at all) the introduction of a tier slightly better than exotic ranked pretty high.

Some people have more than 2 hours a week to enjoy this game so they get things done and get bored with stuff alot faster…, I am only on fractal lvl 11 while people are on difficulty 23 with 2 rings and backpiece ascended. I got no ascended items so far. I am not bothered one bit. So far it hasn’t stopped me and soon enough I will get my items, they are fairly easy to get as well. Tbh I’d have them but I prioritize my legendary hunt over ascended atm. I just keep playing my own game and not worry about others.

I have all but concluded all the content locusts that play GW2 were failed wow raiders anyway trying to establish themselves as hardcore in a game that was designed against gear elitism.
if you know how to maneuver around or an opponent and dodge or know how to build up your class to counter theirs then the gear really doesn’t matter as much.
What if the other player also knows how to play his class? People are always assuming you’re playing against weaker classes or clueless players when it comes to this. Losing against an opponent in WvW will always have that “was he actually better or was it only his gear” feeling in the future (assuming ascended gear won’t be as easy to get as exotics).
The gear is going to give them what… 45 extra points towards his overall stats? If the battle isn’t won by a landslide, then the loser should just assume there was a way to win and that they should find it for next time.
Wondering if it’s gear that made someone else win is an excuse for people to continue not being the best player of their class… one should always strive for better and if you think that’s not possible then there should be nothing to worry about.
Because if you did your best and can’t think of any improvement and still lost, the devs have yet to finish balancing this game and it’s more likely their fault than any gear difference.
if everyone starts out with a baseline of 100 or a 1000 total stat points 45 more is a huge difference maker whether its 50% or 10% matters not the difference is the same.
Heres an example simplified so even a laymen can understand. You take 2 players same class , same trait distribution, same everything cept gear put one in full exotic and put other in ascended now simultaneously hit each other using same attack the person with the higher power, crit and health pool will always last longer no if’s and or but’s.

Not entirely true, sir or madam. Questing in all other mmo’s I have played has you go back and forth from point A to point B and back to A and often has you go somewhere out of your way when you may be trying to do something else, and NO ONE ELSE can help you, if they are in your party they usually have to ask “how many of this item do you need for your quest?” Then they have to back off until you finish. Then each npc in many mmo’s have you go do one quest for them at a time, maybe a few more at one time in rare cases, but it is usually a ton of back tracking going back and forth in order to complete this task and then they give you something else to do that just might be in the same area you just came from for the previous quest!Now there are “fetch quests” in this game, but everyone in the area contributes toward it and you just have to contribute ONE item to get credit and experience. Each Task and event could take only a couple minutes if you decide to complete them, and you don’t HAVE to do the quest hearts if you don’t want to either, unless you plan on getting 100% completion in an area and get the region reward. There are usually several tasks you could do to make progress toward that task, multiple people could be working on one objective or different people could work on different objectives, whatever people do makes it finish faster so you can move on.
Also I find that most of these tasks are actually interesting and not just the usual
“go here, kill this” or “collect this” or “kill this to collect this.”
I feel like I am making meaningful progression, especially with how the events do leave a lasting effect on the world, even if it is a small thing, like who controls a fort, ogres or charr, or whether a small camp remains intact or gets destroyed by an army of ghosts.SOO much better then the typical mmo.

Besides, if they find that it really is creating too much of a balance issue then they could just simply remove those items and compensate the players who worked hard to get them anyway if they loose them.
They have expressed concern and an interest in keeping the game fun and balanced, judging by updates that fixed several major issues.-To long, did not listen.

Seems your experiences with other mmo’s is limited to only wow and its clones. Your knowledge of the Guild Wars franchise seems naive and uninformed. You think gear doesn’t matter go play without it and see how far you can get.

I would bet my bottom dollar that this whole fiasco was planned even before release, which means they pulled a bait and switch on us. This game was advertised for 5 years…5 YEARS…as not having any sort of vertical progression. And now its just as simple as “its evolving”? No. That pig doesn’t fly.

There is no conspiracy, just simple math and common sense. The “iterative” process for this size implementation takes much longer than 3 months, I can guarantee that. From initial proposal to implementation you have all manner of processes that need to be completed…lore, modeling, programming, stat mechanics, concept art, testing, etc. This has been in the works since well before launch, and now they can deal with the backlash.
Somebody finally gets it. This “content update” just didn’t happen, there was no unforeseen gap between exotic and legendary oh on the contrary this “content update” was started on long before release and it has a roadmap to where its going, ascended is the tip of the iceberg.
Maybe one day you’ll understand that even if you put all displeased forum posters together, you don’t even amount to 5% of the people playing the game.
You miss my point. How do they know that people are “excited” then? Could be as well that people are just bored to death by the new content. So what is the source for their opinion? The surevy? Well why didn’t the survey ask for peoples opinion on this then? Is the forum useless because the opinion spoken out here is such a tiny small minority that you can completely ignore it? Well if so, why do they ask for feedback here in the first place? And form which channel do they get the impression that everyone is excited?

Real Time Metrics DO NOT Reflect mood whether its liked or disliked they simply display logins and purchases and always remember the first law of statistics, correlation does no imply causation.

People still run the unbugged Dungeons and I see people running around leveling in most zones. What died was Orr as it is an awful area overall.
The only reason to go there now is the Dungeon and it is unplayable right now.
Really, people still run AC, CM, COE, COF, TA, Arah funny Ive been leveling up all week trying to get groups and maybe seen 2 or 3 each each day whether in LA or in the appropriate zone and everytime its eaither we have 1 short and group falls apart after sitting for what seems an eternity for last spot to fill.
And the lower level zones are as barren as Orr.
My last long term mmo took the world away and had everyone sitting in town waiting in LFG farming their valor to cap then logging off till reset is this what people desire in mmo’s nowadays? It took 2 expansion and 3 content patches to undo the mess they made why cant AN see the road they’re going down has already been traveled its a lose lose scenario.
Exotic Berserker’s Ring (Without Slot item)
As you can see, Berserker’s Ring Exotic vs Crystalline Band Ascended are not hugely different. 10-11% difference overall.
Now apply that 4 more times over the entire trinket slot throw in the back piece as gravy and you have 50% increase in stats just from those 6 slots.
Look around the world of Tyria all the Cathedrals have remained contested for nearly a week now not only that but go to the lower level zones most contestable waypoints stay contested the vast majority of the time, theres no dynamic event groups the world of Tyria is desolate and my only thoughts are the Dragons won the war.
Please dont have a christmas theme event.
People who got a precursor can say with 100% certainty that the drop rate for them was 100% and with AN new found policy of "play for yourself and “F” everyone else" they’d be 100% correct.

This game isn’t anything special really. Age of Conan in a new wrapper instead of guild sieges we have wv3, no defined class roles, combo combat systems and Anet and Funcom both lied.
As far as potential goes I had a lot of hopes for GW2 same as I did for AoC but looks like Ill just go back to WoW seeing as Blizzard knows how handle gear they have gear grind down to a science the only thing I see in GW2 is AN trying to learn how to balance gear gluttony and keeping people happy.
An No GW2 cant hold a candle to WOW not with this new paradigm they are just another WOW clone.

No, accountants and execs who look at the numbers in the MMO market currently say “yes”. Because WoW is huge, and the entire market is catering to a single design decision — tiered gear progression.
There’s plenty of other ways to go about it. In fact there’s nothing that says a different type of game can’t be bigger than WoW. Fact is, nobody’s even tried. GW2 was trying — and IMO they were succeeding — but they’re waving the flag of surrender.
Long and short of it? No, there’s other ways of doing it, but no, we’ll never see them. Game industry is ridiculously risk-averse at the moment — RIDICULOUSLY risk-averse, that’s why some certain companies are only producing sequels to existing franchises right now — and the MMO market is even more risk-averse (my completely uneducated guess is because it’s a riskier investment, it’s a larger thing to make and maintain and the accountants and execs get their fingers into things tighter and force “safe” decisions more frequently which is code for “copy this other game that did well”).
So sir, while your answer wins on snark points, it loses on reality points — there hasn’t been any serious challenge to the gear-treadmill paradigm since… GW1. And this. But they gave up. So no, friend, innovation doesn’t say “yes” — no MMO since WoW has really been very creative or innovative, merely emulative.

Obviously you never played anything before EQ or WOW. Back in the days before EQ and its clone WOW back even before UO you didn’t rely on items per say you relied on scrolls and potions that granted you a temporary spell or a piece of armor or sword that maybe and 2 or 3 uses but alas turn based MUD’S a wonderful part of online role-playing lore has been lost to you youngster.
Stats on gear does not equate to character progression because if that was the case your character would reset every new tier negating all your pseudo progression. The only viable progression metric in the game is the achievement system. This is just a "kitten block " mechanism nothing more.
Ascended gear in lay terms means Death Timer it will also create and further divide the community ie; GLFM must have ascended gear etc etc… bad idea is bad no matter how you spin it.

So technically eyefinity, 3d and nv surround are against the tos/eula since it enables unfair advantages in pvp by increasing the FOV and definately flawless widescreen since its not apart of your gfx driver package and is a stand alone 3rd party piece of software.
You think botters are the only source for gold sellers these days? Think again selling gold from individuals or even guild banks is huge almost to the point where resellers dont even need bots anymore.
@Kal, the problem with just detection is that you can’t validate a ‘find’ easily, this is where F4-RM would come in. F4-RM is not there to accuse anyone, it’s just there to check if ‘you’ are a living entity, by providing a small puzzle for you to solve.
If you read the OP correctly this F4-RM bot would essentially be a random Dynamic Event, that should indeed ‘bother’ everybody every once a while. But behind the scenes it should hunt for Botters.
With F4-RM a more certain flag can be raised, and a GM doesn’t have to take action on every person that happens to get flagged. Instead F4-RM takes care of that portion, and the GM can deal with those characters that F4-RM determained to fail the ‘living entity’ test multiple times. This will mean the GM’s can spend their time on actual bots, instead of chasing every account behind the scenes. Which in turn means that it’s more likely that something is done about the actual bots.
This game doesn’t utilize Game Masters not in the traditional sense of the word anyway.
If I’ve seen this once I’ve seen it a hundred times before. Without the playing communities ability to police itself ergo a vigilante style system bots will consume all the resources within the game, they will control the economy. Arena.net cannot control the game inside the playing parameters sure they can flip a switch but the inmates will always rule to asylum and without a pvp switch this game is toast and a wholesale punishment of legitimate players will further exacerbate the problem.
