So everything you’ve listed sounds pretty awesome and/or should’ve been common sense on the devs’ part (except maybe mounts).

Two hotly contested words you should’ve avoided are ‘raid’ and ‘mounts’ because those always become central discussions that disregard any other good points mentioned. Especially since your suggestion for ‘raid’ content isn’t raid-like at all, but would be a natural extension/combination of WvW and Orr’s event chains (and sounds like a solid idea.) I don’t care if mounts are implemented way or another, and I hope objections for or against the suggestion stay in the 10,000 other mount threads.

But yeah, I certainly love the sounds of 2a, 2b, and 2e (what happened to to 2c?)

Normally, I have a preference for the dark side. My sylvari (before I deleted it for being too wholesome) would totally join the Nightmare Court. My charr guardian secretly desires to embrace the legacy of his Flame Legion father. My human necromancer is noble lady by day, twisted body-part harvester/chef by night.

But the Inquest, man… I don’t think any of my asura could join them. I respect the hell out of them for feeling like true, ultimate villains, though. I don’t feel that from any other group.

Thanks for the input! I really like Prismagneticist.

I decided on The Prismatimagus. Your magneticist title inspired me to use the ‘mag’ sound, but I opted for a more magical name than technological in the end.

This character’s gonna be epic, thanks for the help.

This sounds great. So long as there aren’t any specific rewards beyond the usual, because this should be 100% ‘well I’m in the area, why not?’ instead of anyone feeling forced to retread their steps. In other words, no laurel-like currency or rewards should be added, just money, exp, karma, and the chance for magic items/ingredients.

Hey guys, I’m making a new mesmer, my 3rd asura. I really want her to have a sweet technobabbly job title for her name. I’m forgoing having an actual first name, so her name format will be ‘The Suchandsuch’.

I just can’t seem to find a nicely flowing and impressive name that fits in the name box.
For example, the first name that got me excited was ‘The Prismaplasmaticist’ which is three letters too long.

Anyone have some input into an appropriately mesmer-esque technobabble title? I’m trying to avoid names that very clearly reference the profession, so anything ‘mesmer’ or ‘clone’ are out, but I’m willing to play with the word ‘phantasm’ since it’s an awesome word.

Here’s the top 5 names I’m playing with (you’ll see I’m stuck on ‘prism’ and I hope I don’t get you stuck, too.)

The Chronoclast
The Prismamatician
The Prismatechist
The Prismutationist
The Metaprismatech

Anyone want to join in on the BS job-title fun?

Deleting female Sylvari bc nerf to pain sound

I like that the guy named wolfie loves asura because of the dog-like alert ears, and hates sylvari because they no longer make accidental dog barks.

I thought the sound was oddly charming, but it’s for the best that they fixed it. Then again, I did end up deleting my sylvari for unrelated reasons… but maybe I made the same decision as the OP on a subconscious level.

This suggestion would be absolutely necessary if they also implement the ability to switch between two trait builds (and I really hope they do.)

Otherwise, switching out weapons from inventory is a minor annoyance that I can live with.

Comment on Upcoming Changes to Dailies

Dodge is easy….I don’t get why ppl don’t get it.

I can’t use the normal double tap to dodge cause my hands/fingers are kinda twitchy and it sometimes makes me jump off high places. Yeah…as in multiple times. Jumping puzzles…out.

But the daily is easy to me. Turn it on and get my dodges within a half hour, turn it off.

If I can do it….you can

Nope, I can’t.

I can dodge, yes. I hit a key and my toon dodges. It’s easy. The thing is, the 0/20 count or whatever the Dodge requirement is for the daily, DOES NOT CHANGE. It doesn’t work. I can’t get the count to change by dodging. Then I go back and look at it an hour later and it says 3/20. I didn’t hit the dodge key, so I don’t know why it counted three dodges because I didn’t dodge.

Maybe it’s a bug, maybe I double-tapped and dodged without realizing it. But I have not been able to finish any daily that included Dodge but I have finished every daily that does not. So I’m looking forward to actually being able to complete the daily every day.

That might be because it’s actually evasion that adds to the counter. You can dodge without getting an evade check, and you can evade without dodging, so it can be frustrating if you don’t realize that.

As for the OP, I assume the ‘choose your daily’ system will still be from a small set that randomizes daily, except it’s up to you to decide what ‘4 out of 6’ or whatever the requisite is.

AstralDusk.1670

I don’t know… this sounded suspiciously like a complaint.

Does it matter? Nearly everything on these forums is a complaint.

Yes, it does matter as it will be a contributing factor in how Anet goes about class balance. They have shown the propensity to turn on a dime based on vocal feedback so I like threads like these. It’s why threads like the one on AoE damage and whether it’s a problem are so valuable as it illuminates the issues and make a good decision more likely.

When we talk about profession balance I would prefer to see the discussion be about how we can bring all professions up to the standard of success of the top 3 professions. The nerfbat is the crudest tool in the developer’s toolbox and it is the last one that should be brought out and used.

Oh, hey guys, my post was a joke. I agree with the sentiment that these forums are too tantrum-filled (and perhaps too serious.)

Ranger Rifle?

AstralDusk.1670

I can’t agree with rifles being inappropriate for rangers. As THE primary modern weapon for hunting, it seems like a sure thing. The idea of someone out in the wilderness shooting game with their faithful companion is totally ranger-like. I honestly thought rangers already had rifles, because it makes complete sense. I’d make a ranger in a heartbeat if it had a hunting rifle (since full-plate warriors with sniper rifles feels off, and engineer rifles are more shotgun-like.)

Partial completed dailies

Posted by: AstralDusk.1670

AstralDusk.1670

Uh, yeah. As a person who generally completes their dailies without issue, I see no reason to put this idea down, and am honestly confused at the vitriolic opposition to it. I actually assumed that was how dailies worked already, because it made sense (when the goals didn’t rotate, anyway.)
If someone can only ever devote a half-hour to the game on a daily basis, it seems better to let them plug away at a goal over time. So it takes them 5 days to get it done… they’ve missed out on 4 days of rewards, and need to wait for the next day like anyone else to start a new round. That seems fair. Not to mention the people whose only free time is directly placed around the time of reset. This would allow them a chance to get a daily done without cursing at the screen after only needing to do one more event.

This isn’t about making things easier at all. I don’t know if previous posters were being sarcastic with the whole ‘bleeding edge kitten you I got mine’ deal, but… I hope they were sarcastic, because nothing else makes any sense.

Oops, My Guild Died While I Wasn't Looking

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: AstralDusk.1670

AstralDusk.1670

The most successful guilds (and social organizations in general) I see are the ones built around a core nucleus of tight-knit people. If you have at least one solid group of active, fun-having people, a guild will practically run itself. If that nucleus is mostly just you acting as the host of a party, people will naturally float away when the drinks and activities die down. Parties are about the people; all the booze and music are just excuses for them to come together.

My post might sound useless (you need help finding loyal, active people? Well, get some loyal, active people!) but perhaps your goal shouldn’t be about inspiring people to contribute to events and activities as much as it is building up a group of friends who are there because they like to hang around with each other. The rest is purely magnetic.

If you have that already and your guild is still floundering… yeah, I guess that comes down to luck. Presumably, that core group will also feel some responsibility toward the livelihood of the guild and help fill out your hosting/leadership needs just as a natural extension of group loyalty. But I guess sometimes that isn’t true.

Man, am I the only one who groans audibly whenever Asian-themed places are introduced to otherwise Western-ish fantasy games in expansions? It always feels tacked on and out of place (and admittedly I find zero appeal in the aesthetic. I enjoyed Nightfall, but Factions… couldn’t get into it.)

The tengu I’m cool with, they don’t stick out like a sore thumb (yet). But I hope throwing Cantha back into the mix is, at the least, a very, very far-off goal.

Dungeon Solo

AstralDusk.1670

It doesn’t need to be solo, but I would like a scalable version of the dungeons that don’t require 5 people, at least for story mode.

Like RayKoke said, I play this game as a duo with my girlfriend, and most times bringing on three more people just creates undue hastle and pressure (so far, people have been super serious about speed-running dungeons, which is something we’re not interested in.)

We’re not even interested in the rewards, just experiencing what the dungeons have to offer environmentally and aesthetically. Making the story modes scalable to a less-than-5 team would allow that without having to deal with slowing others down and/or dealing with “weak link” drama.

Player homes not worth development effort

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: AstralDusk.1670

AstralDusk.1670

The OP’s concerns seem like they can be avoided by allowing the map chat of your house’s local area work inside the house instance. It would actually probably bring a lot more chat-based socialization to the cities if there’s 20+ people all putzing around in their houses instead of blazing through after a 2-minute bank trip or mission run. Assuming housing takes place in cities, that is, but it still applies to whereever so long as houses have a public shared chat.

This game is so full of go-go-go momentum, it could benefit from some more things that are low-key, that allow people to type and talk casually.

Suicide jumps for res daily

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

AstralDusk.1670

Well, your argument here is “I don’t want to presume they’re doing it for efficiency’s sake, so I’ll presume they could be doing it for fun’s sake.” Either way, we’re just speculating on someone’s motivations and can’t be 100% about it.

It’s possible that they’re both. There’s a good chance they’re fulfilling compulsory behavior (that they may not even realize they’re acting upon) in a way they found hilarious.

But the angry shoutouts about how hard it is to finish the healer quest and feeling like they’re resorting to this out of necessity speak otherwise.

Suicide jumps for res daily

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: AstralDusk.1670

AstralDusk.1670

This whole thread just highlights the compulsive behavior that systems such as daily achievements take advantage of, and the growing usage of compulsion-driving methods in online games.

Just doing it casually is not an option for some people, and it won’t occur to them that there’s an alternative to getting it out of the way immediately. On the same note, not doing it at all is not an option for some people; people who despite having no free time, feel compelled to to log in and get their rewards as quickly and efficiently as possible.

That’s what all this complaining back and forth seems to come down to. Some people feel a bunch of pressure to perform these tasks ASAP, others don’t, and it’s hard to understand the others’ mindsets.

I know I sometimes have to tell myself to just not worry about the daily, it’ll come as I play. Or on days I can’t play at all, sometimes I need to remind myself it’s no big deal to miss the daily. Otherwise, I’ll feel some compulsive need to do it.

But honestly this is just a major flaw in the concept of dailies themselves. It doesn’t matter what the goals are on any given day, that psychological manipulation is there. Except now you can’t fall into a routine to ease the strain of it. Each day you need to readjust to new goals you HAVE to finish because of this compulsory need, which feels even stronger thanks to a new unique reward currency being introduced into it.

It’s exploitative, and I feel only pity for suicide-jumping healers.

Living Story Focal Point

I agree with Mike Winters. I think when Martin said there were no dragons in this story arc, he meant there wouldn’t be any dragons physically encountered. Their minions, however, are still relevant and can still play a central part.

This still could very well be a slow build-up for a more prominent destroyer presence.

The caravan’s event ends up the hill from the camp is why you hadn’t seen an event marker there. That event doesn’t seem to have any bearing on the bandit onslaught, though.
I’ve never seen an event involving those bandits, they’re always just permanently slaughtering the entire camp and anyone unlucky enough not to realize they don’t stop coming.

I think it’s mainly to back up the reason everyone else defers to you. You need some amount of prestige to be the protagonist that everyone looks to for answers, can’t just be some dude who shows up that Zojja or Rytlock asks what to do next.

I won’t even go into how much that prestige disappears under the glory of Trahearne, but… nevertheless, it’s to set up how you’re more significant than your peers and why it’s you who becomes central to the plot.

I wish I could give more specifics, but it’s sporadic at best that I actually catch these gatherbots in the act. I can’t report them because I don’t register what’s going on until they’ve teleported away to another gather spot. Basically, I turn around and catch someone gathering, think “oh hey a person!” and then they’re gone the second they’ve finished gathering that spot. I can’t confirm that they’re bots until they’re gone.

Trahearne's Voice Acting

in Audio

Posted by: AstralDusk.1670

AstralDusk.1670

I mentioned this in the other voice-acting complaint thread, but my issue with Trahearne is twofold. First, yes, he has a very dull voice (though after being spoiled by all the awesome asura voices with my first character, many people do feel a little vocally dull.)

Second, I first encountered him as my sylvari thief, where I had every reason to expect he came into the sylvari plotline as an eventual traitor. He was introduced at a time where it’s been established that everything in Orr is evil, that at least one of the Firstborn have gone bad, and something fishy is going on. So here’s a Firstborn that’s spent significant time away from anyone, in the center of all evil of all places, and he ISN’T the guy I’m watching out for?
Now everytime he shows up and apparently turns out to be the Marty Stu hero of the entire story, I get totally bummed out that the plot twist where he’s Zhaitan’s sleeper agent will never come to pass.

Party Buff - An Incentive to Group Up

in Suggestions

AstralDusk.1670

I do like the general sentiment of the idea. That was one of the strongest points of City of Heroes. The game was highly soloable, but teaming was still widely done because each teammate increased the amount of enemies while exponentially increasing killspeed. Nobody was really penalized for soloing, but teaming ended up being too fun and easy to pass up on.

I don’t think that can be directly translatable into the way this game works, but I would appreciate some benefits to teaming outside of dungeons, like at the very least sharing heart quest progress while in range.

AstralDusk.1670

You say it would do nothing but good, I say it’d do nothing but make people wait around for healers before trying to do anything. Minimalizing the requirement for specific builds is one of the best things this game has to offer. I realize for some things, people already DO seek out specific builds, but I think the best thing that can happen is lessening that need as much as possible.

I actually love this idea to death and would love to see the game’s awesome world maps have even more ebb and flow to their setup and populations’ traffic flow. It a shame how underutilized some zones are and I think it would be a treat to interact with world a little more directly than completing pre-set events.

But I also agree with a lot of the naysayers that it doesn’t fit and/or isn’t feasible for this game.

My biggest question would be how these ownable points work when the war is between consenting guilds and not all guilds. Or are you saying the toggle is essentially “be part of the guild wars or not” as opposed to “go to war with this particular guild”?

I think there’s a lot of ways a GvG system in the PvE world could just go horribly wrong, despite how cool it sounds.

I have the opposite problem. After playing an asura engineer as my first character, I found the other races a little lackluster. Everything asuran is just so smartly written and has the perfect tongue-in-cheek tone, I was disappointed particularly with norn and human having such generic plots and dialogue.

All in all, being an asura was the best choice I ever made, and I often need to convince myself to stop at two asuran characters for diversity’s sake.

And I could stay in Metrica Province forever.

Am I the only one really disappointed with the voice acting?

in Audio

Posted by: AstralDusk.1670

AstralDusk.1670

I wonder how much the flatness of the personal story dialogue is a result of the casual poses everybody has. Honestly, even the most urgent and animated voice is flattened when they’re just standing around swinging their arms like it’s a calm, breezy day. I immensely enjoy the voices a lot more when I’m not actually watching the characters, and it explains why event chatter is so much more charming.

I haven’t finished the storyline yet, but I’m a little disappointed by the context clues I’m picking up about Trahearne in these threads. If he doesn’t turn out to be a sleeper agent of Zaitan I will be greatly disappointed.

The reason I bring it up, is because I’ve been attributing his weak dialogue as not only slightly sinister, but intentionally lame as a result of being a necromantic minion posing as the original Trahearne as best it could. But now I see that it really may just be poor voicing.
