Those chips were not made to OC at all. They just so happen to OC because at the time, those users bought an overclocking motherboard. Now Intel’s probably going to work on a way to kill overclocking on any processor but an Unlocked K-marked unit.

Plus if you’re gonna put it like that, then my AMD Athlon X2 4600+ is a Black Edition (even though it is CLEARLY NOT) and is TOTALLY made for overclocking, again, which it is TOTALLY NOT, because the AMD Athlon 6400+ is the BLACK EDITION.

The AMD Athlon I’m raising here is the exact same as this i3 530 situation. Overclocking via BCLK. It takes quite a bit of experience to get over 1 GHz of frequency boost STABLE from just using BCLK. You just can’t thorw some half-kitten settings together and just expect it to work. In fact, last I was told, BCLK overclocking is more harmful if it’s not stable than multiplier overclocking.

And not to mention, the BCLK frequency changing tool on a motherboard BIOS is available on any mainboard that is capable of overclocking. It’s not something that is just for processors without an unlocked multiplier. It can be used on ANY compatible processor for that socket.

Yes, on the i3 530, the multiplier is 22 which is the stock setting. As with the i3 540 (wrong processor by the way,) it’s 23. The only direction those can go is down.

Some processors, decreasing the multiplier can make it more stable to push the base frequency further. Example being my AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+ from 2.4 GHz to 2.75 GHz after I decreased the multiplier and upped the base frequency (that’s a huge overclock for that processor on air by the way, so far as I researched)

Once again, both i3 530 and 540 overclocsk you’ve presented are the same as the youtube video. They have probably put a lot of time and research into overclocking through base frequency over multiplier (see ‘skilled’) to reach those numbers.

Yes I know that some locked processors can reach absolutely insane frequencies without being easy to overclock (locked multi) such as one of my guild mates having an Ivybridge i3 at 4.2 GHz (stable) 24/7.

I don’t think it can be done easily unless the board accompanying it has tools made for that purpose.

I still think OP would be better off finding a pre-owned unlocked i5 if he didn’t want to change boards or anything and going from there.

You’re using a video of ONE i3 530 at 4.5 GHz as proof that all of them are good. For all you know, that was just a lucky draw. Sure it works, but not for everyone.

i3s are not great overclockers at all. Try overclocking by just increasing the base frequency. You’ll probably get as much as 200 MHz out of it before a crash. Then use the multipleter. Maybe 600 Mhz before a crash.

Locked processors are almost always not good for overclocking. I mean this in the sense that the multipliers are locked and requires exact numbers for everything to be able to still perform safely. Start learning please.

Dodgy is correct about literally everything in his message until the disabling one core per module thing. I don’t have that experience I bought a beater basic board thinking it was good for everything at the time with my FX-8350.

I also agree with Dodgy on the last bit that this will turn into another stupid intel V. AMD thread… Or some idiot will come in here saying “MANTLE IS THE ANSWER!”

Also, good choicei n PSU. I have the Lightning 1000W and 16 GB DDR3. Had the 8350 but now the i7 4770K.

I know your issue. I was using 7970s with an AMD FX-8350 and the FPS was bad on crossfire. The second card was realy used because my AMD cpu could not feed information to the GPUs fast enough.

Your best solution is to disable crossfire for GW2. I got better FPS afterwards.
However, I have since upgraded to an i7 4770K and I get better performance with crossfire enabled now.

As much as I don’t want to say it, I feel like your A8 3850 APU is bottlenecking your 270Xs.

OC that i3 530 to 4.0 – 4.2Ghz = haswell i3 3.4-3.5Ghz.
The best option

You do realize the amount of skill needed to overclock a locked multiplier processor, right? Especially to that high of frequency?

It’s sometimes easy but most times it’s not.

I read from numerous little bits and pieces here and there on some other websites and from people in game that less than a month ago there was a bit of a boost in performance for AMD CPU. Granted that was after I had already switched to the i7 so I can’t confirm it.

I’m rather displeased that no in-depth details were revealed about it. Just “Optimizations have been made!”

That’s some nice hardware you have, FTisLAND. Certainly have me a bit on the jealous side. However if you’re experiencing lower FPS with SLI on, try with it off and see if your FPS improves. Also, try switching your 780TI around so the secondary one is being used as primary, If no video comes from it, it’s dead and you need’a RMA it. Dead or faulty rather but still an RMA might be necessary.

I feel as if there’s a lack of resources right now as to why there’s no such major improvements to guild Wars 2 yet. In fact, World Of Warcraft had such improvements made with even DX11 and it changed nothing with large fights, proof has been shown earlier in the thread.

All of those games can be compared to a degree except for Battlefield 4, in my opinion. Those games, FPS games are designed to get the best FPS on beater specs or whatever. MMOs are a different story entirely.

Like I usually say, it just needs that optimization to come around…

Also I’m quite jealous of your 4.8 GHz overclock. Like, mad jealous. Mad. That must perform amazing compared to 3.5GHz 4770K setting.

Are you cooling on air? I bought an H100i cooler and overclocking was a breeze. I’ve been overclocking for a long time and going over 80 degrees on load and none of my cpus have burned out so I dont mind slightly higher temparatures. I’m prepared to replace it if it burns out but as of now, 4.8 at 70 degrees on load is doing great except for gw2 so I dont think pushing it any more would help.

H100 so just a step below yours. I don’t think my i7 will go past 4.4 GHz.

Behellagh, what are you talking about?
Tell which CPU i need to buy to get minimum 45-50FPS in large battles?

None of them save for an i7 4960X or other Extreme Edition (3970X) clocked at 6.5 GHz.

Multi-core is better.

Maybe in games that actually take advantage of it. Behellagh already explained that GW2 started development in 2007 for dual cores which were the most common.

And also HSA may come usefull in games.

Well it’s certainly not being useful here, or even used for that matter. It’ll probably be even three years before that happens. I’m sorry dude but your argument points in this discussion do not belong because of the amount of time needed to formulate and even implement them are quite long.

If we compare Dual core vs quad core – E8500 vs Q6600 in games from 2005-2008 – E8500 wins

Not if the Quad core unit’s speed is the same or faster.

New games scales up to 4-6 or even 8 cores – BF4/ Crysis 3/ BF3/BF:BC 2/Dragon Age and so on… Q6600 wins

Now you’re just talking about games that were designed to run on AMD FX. Because that will really help your argument in a discussion on a game where single core performance is everything.

Interesting is amd new “puma cores” – 24% faster than jaguar and jaguar was already 15% faster clock per clock over piledriver. So AMD already has answer in single core performance.

Those won’t be out for a while.

Look at consoles – why did they use 8 cores instead of 4 cores with higher clock.

And this argument point. Once again. No matter how many times it is said, the answer will always be, because AMD paid the most to be there.

Since you’re obviously here to change the topic now, stop talking. This thread is about OP getting crap FPS on an AMD FX-8320 with a good GPU I can’t remember which and here you are talking about things that even if they were implemented will probably be when OP’s not playing the game anymore because he got bored of it like any individual can get bored of a game. So you are not helping at all.

Like I said, I have used an AMD FX-8350. I was not satisfied with the performance. I won’t have a problem buying Intel next time for a high end system.

I also doubt I’ll upgrade to skylake unless there is some major improvement to the cpu that will benefit me.

When I first participated in Claw Of Jormag world boss battle, it was epikittenil I watched my FPS drop to below 10. It was epic. But then it was awful on an epic scale. And then I saw a video of someone doing the fight and on their specs they had an i5 3570K and a GTX 670. FPS was rich and smooth. and I was like “I want that.” So I saved a bit of money every now and then from work and got a new board and processor and this time I made sure the board was good at overclocking.

My i7 overclock was so bad. I got it to the point where it was stable only in guild wars 2 but other games it was kitten. So I removed it. Running 3.5 GHz under a Corsair H100. InB4 people go “Why do you have such expensive cooling for no OC…” and I’m like “Because I like it running lower than 40 degrees.”

Even at 3.5 GHz it still smashes what my FX-8350 could do in this game ._.

Still with low level API even FX 4300 can beat your CPU – i7 4770K
i5 2500K 5.3Ghz is the best solution

Remind me why I should care if Mantle can help a slower processor suddenly become faster than mine because the processing load was shifted to the graphics unit… Mantle is not in Guild Wars 2 and it won’t ever be, and it’s only in one game officially released.

Oh and just for the record, Mantle can work with an Intel platform using AMD Radeon GCN graphics so uh, no the FX-4300 won’t beat out my i7 because I’m running two 7970s.

Recoding a game on a new API requires a large amount of money, something that was easy for Blizzard to do with WoW because they had multiple millions of people paying $15 dollars a month for the past, decade?

As far as I can see, DirectX is made based on the abilities of GPU and CPU at the time so DX9 is single thread intensive, and everyone hated vista which was the only way to get DX 10 as Behellagh stated, so they opted for DX9 so everyone can play the game instead of waiting for Windows 7 which righted what Vista wronged.

Try using one of those USB sound adapters that come with like a Sound Blaster Tactic 3D Alpha or something similar to that if you have access to one. If it’s perfectly fine, the sound hardware you’re previously using is on it’s way out.

Knowing that you recorded the sound without the glitch tells me even more that it’s a hardware fault. You’re never going to record hardware faulting sounds. Software glitches on the other hand, yes.

For us to hear it you’d have to take a video recording of the machine with the mic close to your speakers.

I’m actually kinda convinced that it’s hardware problem.

That’s a first edition 7970 with Asus DC2 fan cooler on it. There shouldn’t be any problems with cooling so it should not be overheating. If your GPU is maxing out, I believe that’s because your CPU is not feeding it information fast enough which would likely mean you’re using an AMD CPU or a very low clocked Intel processor.

Assuming there’s no problems with OPs computer though, that x16 v 1.1 is just idle/standby/low power state when outside of games. My 7970s do the exact same thing but then they go to PCIe x8 or x16 V3 depending on if I’m using crossfire or not.

His screenshot showed Clock speeds of 975+, so I assumed that was taken with the game running in the background. Still that ver1.1 will cause issues if thats what the link rate is while the game is running.

PCi-E 16x ver1 is like PCI-E 4x ver2.

It’ll show the operating frequency it’s set to run at. Right now I’m not in any game and my 7970 on GPU-Z is reading 1075 MHz. When I disable ATI Overdrive, it drops down to 925. On CCC, it’s reading 500 MHz because I have 3 monitors plugged in, else it would be reading 300. In idle my slot is sitting at PCI-E 3.0×16 @ x8 1.1.
