Is GW2 the best MMO?

Best mmo is subjective.
-Playability
-Replay value
-Content
-Playerbase
-Business model
-Developer dedication
-Marketing

And a whole lot other factors.

At this moment in time I can’t say Guild Wars 2 is the best. It’s good but it needs some improvement.

Suggestion: Latency Tolerance in general

Just a quick mention, you know if you HOLD down space when you jump from a height, your glider automatically deploys?

Actually, yes.
But it did not change the fact that I still fell for however long it was as much latency I had which could be anywhere from 700 ms to 960 ms so even holding the space bar defeated the purpose.

I totally get what you’re saying Paulytnz, an I agree with you there that PVP things won’t be helped but PVE can definitely be helped. The most notorious things now are the bouncy mushrooms, drytop skills, Jumping pads, things like that.
I bet things like these being implemented could totally help things even like the jump puzzle in Southsun Cove.

But yes ping related content like PVP will always be ruled by the ones with superior ping. I could see this kind of implementation helping things like jump pads in Dragonball though, that’d make it more playable.

I personally don’t do a lot of PVP, sometimes I like to rip around in world versus world because it’s really fun in edge of the mists, though I am mostly a PVE person and this kind of stuff would really help me enjoy the game a lot more. It’d be so much more playable for everyone.

Hello!
It’s a couple months ago now that I once made a forum post in the Heart of Thorns discussion regarding the Glider and it’s deployment mechanic, about how it was nearly impossible for me to use because of my high latency connection. I would click space, wait nearly a second (~800ms) falling that far before it sprouting wings from my back. This was a huge problem and why I have been largely unable to play Heart of Thorns.

However, since the January 12th patch,
“Changed glider deployment to be more tolerant of network latency.”

This right here feels like it was an answer to my plea for a more usable glider and I imagine everyone with a high latency rejoiced that day.
(I still am.)

Now I want to try another suggestion. Would it be possible to try and integrate this same change into general gameplay mechanics like casting abilities, weapon abilities, utilities, etc?
I noticed with new glider deployment, on my end the glider deploys, and then the server now plays catch up instead of the other way around which made it hard to play.

As it is right now, for example if I used a leaping skill like Guardian Greatsword #3, I would do the leap, but most of the time I would rubberband back to my spot. Or use a Teleportation Rifle thingamabob, and I would go nowhere or rubberband. Same with the Hammer leap on Revenant, which is completely useless as well. My hope is to change that.

Not too long ago I started up with Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward and I noticed right off the start that the gameplay has what I need to make it actually playable. Animations happen right when I click them and then there’s the server check, etc and the health drop if I attack an enemy. It’s far less dependent on the connection and delay thereof.

So that’s what I’m hoping to get at here, if something like this can be done for Guild Wars 2. It would make my experience as well as anyone with high latency a lot better. Obviously it’s not going to help dodging or something like that but even something like this would certainly make it more enjoyable.

Think of it this way: That change to the glider made literally all of Heart of Thorns playable for me on January 12th. I was totally thrilled and happy that that change had been brought about. It’s my hope that the same can be done for everything else that this same idea CAN be applied to. There’s a lot of playability potential sitting here. I would love nothing more than to see this happen.

Hope this is even understandable!

Suggestion: Glider Mechanics w/ High Latency

holding space bar instead of trying to double tap it helped me lots!

I should give that a go. If anything it’ll at least make it take as long as my latency response to pull out my glider. I’m not expecting much though.

On the other hand The lag allows me to do some pretty silly things that you can’t do otherwise.

The big issue with client-side computation is abusing the nature of it to hack it for an advantage elsewhere in the game. The limited-access aspect of gliding is also likely causing an issue with packet loss less so than high latency, for a check needs to be made if you’re in the correct world region that allows it (or so how I imagine implementation works).

Otherwise they may just have all of the computation done server-side for the sake of hacking prevention on gliding to prevent abuse. I’m not really sure, though. The client should send a signal stating that you activated the gliding effect at a certain position and check if that position is valid for a gliding, and thus you should be sent up, anyways. That’s effectively the whole premise of rubber-banding, as the client and server are extrapolating where your character should be based on the criteria of actions performed, and those actions are conflicting with actual submitted data, so it instantly attempts to correct itself.

The very unfortunate part about this is that I do not rubberband back to my spot. I fall however long it takes for my glider to whip out which is about one second and I can’t access most places that easily. Sometimes when fighting the Legendary Mordrem Wyvern for example, I cannot glide down to the platform because I fall past it. I climb onto that little root on the side of the drop in spot and fly over and even then sometimes I don’t make it.

I see your point though on hacking prevention so I’m hopeful that some sort of compromise can be made.
but I guess if worst comes to worst, HoT isn’t going anywhere and I’ll have decent internet access eventually.

Hello!

This is gonna be something that players with high latency including myself will be absolutely ecstatic for including myself.

So players with high ping. We see them every now and then, how they rip around the map doing whatever, but oftentimes we see them rubber banding, taking delayed moments to do something, etc. They might have high latency. I myself play with on average 700-800 ping.

Though how I am able to even continue playing the game is that my movement is done client side. IE, I can move my character, and then after the response time kicks in, it shows my characters moving on other people’s screens. About a single second delay. Cool, that’s livable. I’ve been playing this game for two years like this.

But one of the major mechanics of Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns, the Glider, does not follow this same principle, and I’m sure a fair amount of players can relate when they say that most of the time, it’s simply not usable.

Believe me, I would have better internet service type if I could in no time flat. But maybe this idea can help.

What if Glider deployment was also done client side? Hit space bar, glider comes out, the response time kicks in, then other players see it? This would let people with high latency like myself and others be able to have instant access to the gliders and actually be able to get places. Though I honestly have no clue if this would even be possible to do, but one can hope, right?

In the end if it were possible, that would mean that I could get to say the top of the Great Tree in Tangled Depths without a Mesmer portal. I could fly around each map and reach every place I can’t at the moment. It’s an exciting thought. And while that’s happening, everyone can see me fall to my doom and then suddenly reappear in the sky still flying gracefully!

Does this even make sense?

Anyway I think that’s about all I wanted to share. I’m hoping that this is even remotely possible.

I hope this suggestion makes sense and can be thought about!

Hi.

Whenever I play Guild Wars 2 since the big launch of Heart of Thorns, every now and then when I’m alt tabbed out of the game and switch back, the game stops responding and forces me to close it via task manager.
Never had this issue before the big day.

Thought I’d share this. Since there’s no real way to report it outside of forums. :P

Best AMD CATALYST drivers for GW2

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Avelos.6798

Avelos.6798

simple answer : Disable Crossfire for Gw2 : there is ZERO gain for multi gpu setup in this game ( even with SLI ) It can even run better with one card ( also less heat )

Gw2 is all about cpu single thread performance

Agree about CPU.
Disagree about Crossfire.

Reason:
As since I play in Eyefinity, 5760×1080 with 4790K and R9 290X crossfire two way, having Crossfire on lets me get 60 fps or better at Hoelbrak for example when standing down by the middle of the map near the main lodge looking at the bear lodge.

Disabling crossfire for one R9 290X gives me straight line 30 fps with very small fluctuations.

Crossfire hurts performance when the player’s processor is AMD, not Intel.

Running 14.12 simply because I’m too lazy to update to 15.3 and it’s a beta. I don’t generally like betas.

Feedback on HoT Stress Test [merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Avelos.6798

Avelos.6798

I got my chance to take part in the small beta stress test and I found the experience enjoyable after a few setbacks at first.

I had to restart my client four times just so I could fully play through the demo of the story instance. I’ve coined that to terrible internet.
However, speaking of terrible internet, it was still fairly easy to adapt with the Revenant class and use it’s abilities to some effect still.

As a real stickler for performance and remembering past instances of say, old Lion’s Arch, Southsun Cove, and some other maps, I was highly expecting this map to drop down in frames-per-second. To my pleasant surprise, that was not the case. It played pretty decently performance wise in majority of areas. Note that my system spec consists of an i7 4790K running at 4.4 GHz with two R9 290X with a 5760×1080 triple monitor setup.

That reminds me. The Masteries UI is very bad. It also stretches across all three of my monitors, with buttons in respective positions as if treating my Eyefinity setup as one entire monitor. It was very bad.

Activating the glider was a bit finicky but that too can probably be coined to the fact I have 700 ping.

I didn’t encounter bugs of any sort either, but I don’t doubt that anyone else did.

All in all, despite my bad internet (700 ping at all times fosrs) the demoing was very good, and a fairly enjoyable experience.

Nvidia GTX 760 SLI

It supports SLI and Crossfire. Just the thing here is that the GTX 760 alone is enough to handle all that the game has in terms of visuals. You won’t see any enhancement with two cards, maybe somewhat more stable frames even.

GW2 is a processor bound game so say for example you’re running an AMD CPU with SLI 760, changing to an Intel i5 4690K for example would increase your FPS by at least 1/3 at the minimum.

Would a 980m be able to run GW2 max + ss

in Account & Technical Support

on my Asus G75VX it has an i7 3630QM and GTX 670Mx. I can run all of the settings at max quite easily but prefer to turn off shadows and reflections for the extra little boost in FPS because it’s a mobile i7 that goes up to 3.2 GHz on quad turbo whereas on my tower, my 4770K I sometimes put at 4.1 GHz. I also leave render sampling on native because of the screen size.

But to answer your question, the 980M can handle every visual thing this game can offer aside from when it becomes CPU bound IE with all of the particle effects, players running around, densities, etc. GPU wise, anything at least overclocked mobile GTX 660M and up can max the game. CPU wise, not possible at this current time. Not 60 FPS in all places without tweaked settings, but that’s not max.

Other than I think I actually got a bit more frames per second because the game was being focused on one entire monitor instead of three. Just more pixel density. I’d opt for anything Haswell i3 or even the i5 4430 as Sirsquishy said. I’ll politely disagree with the Pentium G3258. The i5 is leagues higher in performance than such a CPU.
An FX-8350 will run the game alright, will be enjoyable in some areas SPVP included but large player events and very complex areas it’ll eat dirt completely. Used one myself and ultimately changed to the i7 4770K a half year later because it was so dissatisfying. A haswell i3 or i5 will make the game much more enjoyable. Doesn’t have to be the latest and greatest either.

For running this game specifically, I don’t see issues arising with the R7 265. Not the worst and far from the best but it’s still capable of this game. Given the specs I’d place it somewhere around the Radeon HD 7790/7850 territory which is still decent. I have friends that play this game with little issue on HD 7770 graphics cards and they’re good on budgets.

I have a Samsung UD590 4K monitor ready to roll here, in 5760×1080 with R9 290X crossfire on an i7 4770K that I usually like to clock to 4.1 GHz I get usually around 50-55 fps in lion’s arch at around the mystic forge excluding the halloween content going on. I don’t suspect it’d be too different with the 4K, maybe just a little lower if anything? I’m unsure.

Aside from lowering visible player count, lowering shadows and reflections was a large boost for me.

Knowing you and I have the same general brands, OP, Intel + AMD, I run my Catalyst Control Manager without AA completely and in game I run everything at the highest setting and no FXAA and usually see good frames in most areas I feel that you should see similar if not slightly lower with 4K if arrays if pixels mean anything, IE difference between 4K and 5760×1080.

I hear the i7 5820K can overclock like a sun of a gun and I was even considering jumping to one myself lately but overclocking success depends on quality of hardware used as well as your patience and determination. Too much for me. Too much work for so few frames increase.

Avelos.6798

Well I’d say you have a fairly good laptop from the Sandybridge time, very popular and very common specs for a gaming laptop. The 2630QM i7 turbos up to 2.9 GHz so I’d wager that that would be 2.7 GHz or 2.8 GHz on quad turbo (Tip! 2.9 GHz is the single core turbo, so 2.8 GHz should be the dual core turbo and 2.7 GHz should be the quad core turbo) so that should be able to provide enough power to do most things easily with respective drops in world events and world versus world or effect heavy areas like Black Citadel which kills the best of machines at times.

I can’t see this issue being hardware defect or anything so I’d look at the basics first:
Is it an Asus ROG laptop? Plug it in.
Is it not? Set the laptop to High Performance power profile. This will eliminate all power save options and essentially put a gaming laptop into gaming mode, and will disable core parking, for anyone wondering.
Check that your graphics drivers are up to date. Make sure your GPU and CPU are not throttling from overheating. This can be potentially tricky as you may need to open your laptop up to get a visual of the heatsinks to check for dust. If there is, get that dust out of there. This helps a lot.
Free up RAM if it’s being used too much (I don’t think it would be much of a problem, I mean so long as 4 GB is available it should be fine,)

Check programs like GPUz as well on the readings of the BUS width in realtime. If laptop graphics card connections are anything like desktops, then your GTX 560M should read either PCIe X8 2.0 or PCIe X16 2.0. Either is fine. X16 is mainly for supercharged monstrous, beefy-all-to-hell single chip graphics cards, or dual chip graphics cards.

If your Intel/Nvidia laptop has Optimus technology, make sure that the game is using the GTX 560M and not the i7’s HD 3000 chip, assuming that i7 even has one.
I don’t have to worry about this with my Asus G75VX, even with an i7 3630QM and GTX 670MX; It doesn’t have Optimus so Intel HD 4000 doesn’t even show up in Device Manager.

In game settings, try disabling Shadows, turning off Reflections or putting them on Terrain & Sky. Lower Render Sampling to Native if it’s not already on there. Play around with Culling options (how many characters you can see on screen) a bit to find your settings. Auto detect doesn’t work for everything so it comes down to user preferences. I recommend playing around with it.

Anyway if none of these options help, I can’t really think of anything else.

A friend of mine played GW2 on a Dell laptop with an i7 2720QM, 8 GB and a GT 525M. Put it on auto detect and then turn off shadows and reflections. It should give you around 40 fps in most areas excluding wvw of course. PVP I could see that laptop doing well enough for light competition. But yeah general PVE content should be fine. Also resolution 1366×768.

GPU - quiet 60fps and settings on high

I could have been a little more clear, yes. The DirectCU II cooler for the current generation is pretty much all the same. All GPU contact, no VRM cooling.

As for reference cards… Anything that is not an R9 290 or 290X is fine. Slightly on the noisy side at times but still good cards. Any Nvidia card with the Titan cooler is a super choice as well.
