AMD has poor single core performance compared to Intel.
I just upgraded from an AMD FX-8350 to an i7 4770K and clocked it to 4.4 Ghz.
My FPS basically doubled in most places.

and GW2 does not use 1G VRAM at 1080p unless you are super sampling and have your character limit above medium. The Most I have ever seen GW2 for vRAM was 760~MB. (Sampling – Native, CharLimit – Low, CharQual – Medium, Rest on High/Ultra).
a DirextX 9 game is never going to use more than 1 GB of RAM on a single monitor.
“Max out GW2 with a $400-500 setup help”
Not gonna happen.
For the price, that cpu is worth it in my opinion. Find another stick of RAM too. Get better performance for less money without having to buy almost a whole new machine.
Hello there fellow Tyrians. Here’s the deal what I’d like to know:
What are you experiences with AMD CPUs?
I used to game on an AMD FX-8350. It was decent for what it did but it was not quite enough. I bought an Intel Core i7 4770K and Asus Maximus VI Formula Z87 motherboard because of this game. The game plays so much better. I plan on overclocking it too. Might not. I have it under a Corsair H100 anyway.
Planning to re-use the 8350 as well.
A friend in my guild has an ivy i3 at 4.2 GHz with a Radeon HD 6990, he get’s like 50-60 FPS looking at Lion’s Court from the Divinity’s Reach portal in Lion’s Arch.
So I purchased all three stack expanders and a bank tab. I might buy another since I still have some leftover gems.
Very worthy purchase.
If you’re full up on bank slots then I’d say the collection expander would be the next logical set of upgrades followed by ensuring you’re at max bag slots for all your characters with 20 slot bags in each spot.
If you still need further storage you may need to make a guest appearance on Hoarders.
Oh I definitely need to get myself all three expanders. Will definitely help me.
The current limit is 12 tabs.
Omg that’s great thank you!
Hello,
So I have eight bank tabs… pretty much full… I’m pretty bad for that and I will be buying another, but I hear the current limit for bank tabs is nine, correct?
I’m wondering if there is a higher limit or a limit that will be increased anytime soon.
The GPU is literally just a step higher than my laptop’s GTX 670MX so you’ll probably get slightly better and probably between 40-60 on just about all PVE areas on max settings. I play without shadows and reflections though to get that extra boost. Mine has an i7 3630QM. PVP will go well, WVW will see a hit. The only thing that drops my FPS on my laptop is shader particles such as that from the Death From Above trait in use when I hit the ground.
always want to avoid integrated graphic cards and get a dedicated card
Not always. There might be something that you’ll never need one.
if you’re using that GPU, the Intel HD 4600, then it may be that you don’t have a dedicated graphics device. In that case you’d have to buy one and possibly buy a power supply to accommodate the dedicated video device. Intel i5 4440 is a decent processor.
If you’re talking low FPS by say the Mystic Forge or the Lion’s Court in Lion’s Arch, that’s totally normal for this event. Otherwise FPS tanks on AMD users at the mystic forge. I have shadows and reflections off and it helped a bit for mine.
Have you just tried things in Lion’s Arch? Around the middle they added a tonne of particle effect clouds that really crush frames
Next time try to read original post. It’s about certain cpu and not even amd.
Try being more observant. My response to OP is the second message on this topic. You made a statement and I took the time to correct that it’s not always true.
(edited by Avelos.6798)
I saw no difference overclocking my 8350 to 4.7 GHz.
>standard CPU fan is barely enough for non Oc’ed cpu.
Not always true. Friend of mine that runs a computer shop had an old Athlon II X2 clocked up from 2.8 GHz to 3.720 GHz on stock fan and gamed on a Radeon HD 4890.
How high you can go on stock fan depends on a lot of things, most importantly the quality of silicon used in the processor and the mainboard, the power supply, how well ventilated the case is, etc. Your best bet would probably be googling if no one other than myself answers, haha.
you’ll be able to play GW2 on lowest settings but you probably won’t get better than 20 FPS in any area.
I don’t play PVP at all because my internet is like a bag of male genitalia.
Did you buy a pre-owned copy of Guild Wars 2 is it brand new still had factory sealed plastic? (may be a silly question since you said you paid 70 for it [it’s also 50 bucks on the website so I think you got gipped] but you never know)
To put it simply, yes. Your A8 5600K is a bottleneck but only for Guild Wars 2. Other games will play fine.
It won’t have amazing FPS but it can hold it’s own if your expectations are not super high.
A friend in my guild suggested using a Leatrix fix and it so far has helped my issue a bit. Even dropped my ping a bit too.
http://www.leatrix.com/leatrix-latency-fix
It takes like a minute from download to install if you have a USB network adapter otherwise just restart your computer and it’s active.
This is so horribly off topic now
i want to know this as well.
Core per core the 4670K is faster than the 3930K. Yes.
But you guys are ignoring that the game will use more than one core. A six core intel i7 should get better performance over the quad core i7 by a possibly noticeable margin. More so over a quad core without hyper threading. Even if the i7 3930K is clocked at 4.6 with the 4670K clocked at 4.4, the performance from the i7 may be higher.
Yes I have to relog my game every minute. It’s so god kitten frustrating.
I pinged multiple sites as well with the start menu “ping www._________._” and all of which except for www.guildwars2.com have given me consistent results. www.guildwars2.com timed out multiple times.

The usual build I see is i5 3570K now i5 4670K, 8 GB DDR3, GTX 660TI or GTX670 or GTX 760, (or GTX 770 if you want some extra power on the GPU side for other things) or the Radeon HD 7870, 7950, 7870XT, R9 260X, 270X, 280X. Those core parts should provide reasonably good FPS for Zerg fights. As always “this game is so terribly optimized” and such people will say. Why not just say it runs like a beta? It is true, after all. Brute forcing the game with more raw CPU power is the way to do it.
Fastest computer I know of which is used by SolarNova sporting an Intel i7 3930K clocked at 4.6 GHz with a GTX 780 still gets crippled.
SirSquishy I’d like to point out that the R9 variant of 7970 is still new, so that one may be exempt from the dying GPU part. However OP’s i5 3470 and 7970 as well as the first commenter on the video he posted have the same CPU and GPU so maybe there’s some sort of hardware fault.
If its a driver/compatibility issue you see graphical issues. Such as Flickering, size, distortion issues, and as well as graphical Lag.
But doted Pixelation on the screen (Red, Blue, and Green Dots) is memory corruption mainly due to either over heating, bad ram, or dying core on the GPU. Which is why i still suggest the OP, and anyone else having this issue, to check their GPU Temps (my HD7790 was running at 83C before I even noticed it myself…put new TIM and now my peaks are 70c..had i not caught it, I would be having the same issue eventually!).
You raise decent point with checking thermals.
I have not had any problems with my 7970s ever but since they’re reference, I should go through and give them a nice apply of new goodie good thermal compound. They never go higher than 80c on a good day but they’re so close to each other, as close as they can get on my board. But my gaming computer keeps my room nice and warm in winter haha.
Some extra info here:
I bought a pretty tough machine recently and I ran GW2 at 99fps, super smoothly (in LA as well) on my 1366×768 resolution screen. I even tested Battlefield 4 on ultra and I had around 180 fps.
A couple of days ago I got my 27 inch HD 1920×1080 screen and my Guild Wars 2 went kitten itself – my fps are now like 45 and 20 in LA/FoTM/WvW/PvP.
The strange part is, as soon as I set the sampling on native (not supersample) I get my 99 fps back ;oAwkwardly BF4 is still around 140 fps on 1080p….
My spec is:
- i5 3350p
- 8GB ram 1866
- GTX 660 OC
- GW2 and OS is on an SSD
- Z77 series motherboard
- 12 MB/s internet bandwithgoing from 1366×768 to 1920×1080, yea that is completely normal.
The higher res is going to push your CPU more in GW2, which will lower the graphical performance.
and LA is the WORST place to test your FPS, btw. go someplace else.
I like to think LA is the best place to test your FPS because it scores the lowest. Therefore, anything (excluding WVW) will score higher. Expect less, get surprised with more!

This would work well. You could probably drop the GPU lower and opt for a better CPU cooler, but it’s your call.
The power supply can also be dropped to 500 or even 450 and save some bucks.
No, a 500W PSU cannot handle an OC on the i5-4670K. It will heat up and eventually pop, like mine did. 600w is the min if you are going with a 4th gen K.
A quality 500W PSU is perfectly fine for a single card build. 600 is excessive- you could likely go for 2 midrange GPUs with that.
I’d have to agree here. A 500w PSU with something like 80 Plus Gold certification would probably handle all of that plus some OC fairly easily.
Uhh… probably not. Just say to her to go grab a 5 dollar mouse or something.

RAM doesn’t need to be installed in pairs of 2+2 or 4+4. As long as the two sticks, if 2 GB and 4GB are the same spec and latency, it won’t matter.
Both of my 7970s are reference 925 MHz core and 1375 MHz GDDR5
I usually recommend the water coolers because of the overclocking ability as well as keeping the CPU cooler than substantial air coolers.
Shift Focus may be running a rather high clock in wvw on a lower server that doesn’t have as big of fights as Black Gate / Jade Quarry / Sanctum of Rall. Always keep that in mind.
Hatred towards Windows 8 is purely up to the user. My Windows 8 gaming laptop has absolutely no problem playing this game. :B AND I like it! IMO it’s a terrible idea to try and steer people away from something because someone else hates it.
OP: If you’re not worried about a budget, then your spec list is absolutely perfect. I’d look at grabbing a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo if you’d want to overclock at all in the future. Stock fans are no problem and do their job as intended and supply properly ventilated computers the ability to turbo the processor and maintain acceptable running temperatures. Could possibly even make a small overclock without a voltage increase if you’re lucky. However Hyper 212 Evo (even though big) is very quiet and can supply much better cooling for air coolers. If you want to do large overclocking, I’d recommend looking into something like a Corsair H60 closed loop cooler.
I use two 7970s, I always have my browser open, I’m using 13.4 driver pretty sure, using my game with steam, no problems.
I should also add sorry for the huge delay, that my two 7970s are overclocked to 1070 core and 1525 RAM
(edited by Avelos.6798)
Are you using beta drivers? I have absolutely no issues with this game and I’m not using beta drivers.
Nope. It’s the CPU. If your FPS is like in the 20s range with max graphics with reflections and shadows off in lion’s arch and half the time hitting single digits in wvw on a large zerg (black gate style) then that’s pretty normal. 6 fps for the redone tequatl event.
The point of retail DVD is for marketing.
Installing off the DVD also makes the overall download much smaller. Instead of 18 GB-22 GB, it’s more like 4-5 GB after the 15-16 GB installed.
If you’re gonna put it on 2560×1440 I’d grab the 775M with i7.
maximizing frame rate for low end laptop: Auto detect settings Or Best Performance option.
Also the option of the Borderlands 2… just buy it for the X360.
2 GB 775M will be enough for GW2. I don’t suspect Guild Wars 2 to use anymore than 1280MB of VRAM on the highest settings. Now when you add two more displays for Nvidia Surround, that value will double.
GW2 is not Anti AMD. AMD makes their processors for other things. The same things as Intel too, but Intel does it better. Simple as that.
