The “free” key was offered last week. If you took advantage of it, then it’s no longer available. If you didn’t and you just noticed, you post “hey there’s a free key available on the TP”. They want players to buy keys so they are under promotions. Promotion doesn’t mean sale or limited time.

Odds based on taking ANet’s statement of 6 out of 25 at face value. If the odds are significantly different than why bother stating the pool size? Wouldn’t that generate more dissatisfaction because players would feel that they were lied to about their chances?

Euler’s complaint is he only got 1 dye out of 10 packs and that’s a rip off. IF you use the odds of 6 in 25 or 24% on each pack, only getting 1 dye out of 10 packs occurs 20.3% of the time which is the same chance as getting 4 or more. If Euler did get 4 or more I’m sure he wouldn’t have started a thread about his good fortune.

My original points on page one is if you want a guaranteed new special dye to be offered, expect to pay in the 400-500 gems range assuming the current odds are 6 in 25 is correct.

People don’t grasp probability. They often assume that a 1 in 4 chance means that they will win one time out of every four, guaranteed. And if not then they will “catch up” with two of the next four. That’s not the case. Players may think that if they buy a 5 pack that they will get one special dye but, assuming a 6 in 24 chance, they will get no special dyes 25% of the time. If you are one of those players you will be mightily upset and suggest that the odds are actually much lower and ANet is pulling the rug over everyone’s eyes.

I’m simply trying to show that even with the assumed odds implied by ANet, Euler’s result wasn’t statistically unusual. It’s not even one SD away from the mean.

I did not speculate in any way that the odds are lower than what is implied, I said that it’s possible they are, and that’s what I meant.

Even with 50/50 odds it’s possible to get a dissatisfied result; I don’t think anyone is contesting that. I’m certainly not.

[Suggestion] modifying the tp tax system

Since the 5% unrefundable posting fee and 10% tax upon sale on the TP purpose is to siphon away a large fraction of the coin that is injected into the world by rewards or from NPC vendors and that it’s more than likely that the majority of items sold on the TP are sold only once, the change you are recommending is going to cause inflation in an awful way.

The alternative is a pure NPC vendor system where they will buy your goods at some discount of their sell price. I’m sure some clever programmer could come up with an equation to set the sell price based on supply, demand and current gold in the global economy. Something along the lines of the Gem exchange but for each item in the game. Seeded at the vendor price at the start and we can see how many items are driven down to 2c each (only because sell price needs to be higher than buy price).

No TP Barons and either everything is cheap or nobody can afford anything.

You are right that wont satisfy anyone, but a “We are aware of the issue and working on possible solutions” will go a long way if a fix appears within half a year..

Of course, if a fix does not appear, people will be rightfully annoyed..

Unless the complaints are about things they have no intention of “fixing”. Loss of upgrade salvaging on unsalvageable items comes to mind. I fully believe that loss was intentional, fixing a workaround that players figured out and was difficult to fix with the previous system. Implementing a pure skinning system fixes that.

Want that upgrade back? Buy and extractor or buy a new one off the TP. Eliminates a source of supply while upping demand at the same time. Superior runes/sigils were too cheap on the TP.

I read your point as the odds must be below what’s implied. And because it costs so much to do any empirical testing ourselves before we achieve any level of confidence it leaves both of us with the choice of believing what’s implied by their 6 in 25 statement or not.

I’m using the implied odds to demonstrate that it’s possible to get a dissatisfied result with sample size of 10 or 20 or 5 or whatever. Others choose to take these complaints as fact that the odds are significantly less. I’m simply trying to show that’s not necessarily the case.

I grant you in a single player RPG that you should expect to achieve everything but it’s different in an MMO as soon as you allow players to trade with each other.

And the devs were quite upfront that legendary weapons are difficult to craft and the primary reason is that precursors drop very infrequently on an individual player basis. But legendary weapons also require participation in activities that an individual player may not enjoy participating in, such as dungeon speed running. It’s tough to get those badges if you keep getting booted because you haven’t made dungeon running your life, or that you are a natural klutz with your keyboard and mouse which is why you don’t play FPSes.

Other items require real money to acquire via the Gem Shop, but on an RNG basis, so they are naturally scarce.

But, you say, players with big bags of gold can buy gems (causing the exchange rate to rise for everyone else) to eventually acquire those expensive skins and dyes for their own use while selling what they don’t want to offset their investment in gems. True but that big pile of money could have come from continuous farming before the various nerfs took place. Getting “lucky” with precursors and crafting legendaries. Or even lucky with keys and dye purchases from the Gem Shop and turning that into gold or showing them off on their own characters.

The assumption that only the TP is the source of such wealth and therefore the root of all evil is what bothers me.

Players can’t artificially create supply unless you are implying a De Beers situation where supply is controlled by a few. But since item supply is random (unless we are talking crafted items) such a cartel simply can’t control a market (on a specific item) the way you believe they are.

Does it not occur to others that the high bid/low sell price of a low velocity item like precursors, ticket skins and legendaries are the prices nobody is willing to pay and that the actual transaction price is always inside this range? Both tracking sites I’m aware of sample too infrequently to guarantee detecting an item that lasts only for a short time on the TP before it’s snapped up.

So put in a bid like everyone else or farm them yourself. Time is money and money is time saved. High demand coupled with few farmers equals high price.

Or you can buy crafting bags for laurels or upgrade lower tier and hopefully cheaper ones. Or salvage a lot.

But you choose to believe that the price of those “monster parts” is solely due to manipulation rather than actual market forces because you can’t afford them to do what? Craft for quick leveling because few items craft for either profit or leveling crafting skill.

Have you ever done WvW or dungeons? Repair NPC is in all 4 borders, everyone in a dungeon/fractal can leave to repair.

What part of not stopping what you are doing to travel somewhere else to get repaired and returning you are not grasping? If I’m zerging in WvW from objective to objective, being rezzed in the field, I would want an item to repair my now damaged armor before it loses it’s effectiveness. Everytime you die in WvW doesn’t mean you will waypoint to rez or even waypoint to a local with a repair NPC.

I eagerly Await your suggestions.

How would you feel about an option for a buy/sell pricewhich is somewhere between the current buy and sell offers (I like the midpoint)? I would be willing to use that, but find it too tedious to enter the midpoint manually each time I want to sell something; I know it’s not needed right now, but I suspect that if it existed the buy/sell prices would be more likely to converge. (This does mean more efficient pricing, and less profit for flippers … at least for active markets.) The only real downside I see is that it might reduce the depth of orders … but I think prices would fluctuate enough during the day that you could still do range trading.

That would be a problem for those who aren’t paying attention and simply want coin, any amount will do, right now. The midpoint will become the “new” low sell and the price will rapidly move toward the high bid.

So some players aren’t going to get their coin right away on sale, forcing them to spend a few moments switching to high bid, and then posting to complain about it and demand a setting for the TP. And with a high velocity item, the sale price will quickly revert to just above high bid and the seller isn’t really getting any more coin when it does sell.

To much uproar from indifferent sellers who simply use the TP as a better paying NPC vendor.

does gw2 utilize 4 cores?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Not entirely right Behellagh. That only happens when the program is coded to take advantage of it. If a program is only coded to run on one or two threads, the most your OS can split it across is one or two cores. The OS can dynamically adjust so that the most intensive processes have a core or two to themselves, but that’s about the limit.

I admit it’s an oversimplification. But I didn’t want to complicate the explanation by bringing in the concept of threads. But since this game has lots of threads but an unbalanced work load across those threads, the game rarely needs the power beyond three cores. Since someone else explained the asymmetric nature of the workload across threads including the number and the use of Process Explorer to watch the workload across threads, I didn’t bother to reiterate that.

And there is rarely a direct mapping of threads to cores by the software itself. That like many other aspects of modern software is left up to the OS to handle. So yes, on one hand software is coded to take advantage of multiple cores. On the other that doesn’t mean that software will scale linearly to the number of cores you have or that only a few cores will show a lot of activity instead of all of them showing a somewhat balance share.

does gw2 utilize 4 cores?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

A modern OS will distribute work across as many cores as there are in you system. The question really should be does the game generate enough work to keep 4 cores totally busy. The answer to that is often no, two to three cores worth of work spread over the number of cores you have but it can peak at times over three.

It depends on the performance of the CPU, the video card, the game settings and even hard drive speed and memory amount to determine the overall CPU the game needs.

That was a grey market. It wasnt officially supported maintained or designed. In fact it mostly worked against their designs by not giving ectos a true price based on their trading algorhythm and getting around the money cap. They also nerfed non ecto farms.

In gw1 though, nerfing farms wasn’t that big a deal because you could get most things through gameplay.

The trading game was an opt in unsupported way of playing

I bought two packs of 5 dyes and got none of the new ones and one rare. I’m still kicking myself a few days later over it.

Not the best way to welcome a new player back. At the very least the real chances of getting the new dyes should be on the description instead of a vague “you may win something”

The word “chance” does not mean the same as “guaranteed”. Even if you knew the exact odds, you could realistically be in the same position if you took that chance. Tis RNG.

If I knew the general odds it would definitely affect my buying.

But I guess that is what they are counting on… that the person buying believes it’s a better deal than it really is.

You do know the odds, you just don’t understand them. That’s OK, most people who hadn’t taken Prob and Stats in college don’t (and some who did still don’t). There is a 1 in 16 chance that 10 dyes yield no special ones. There is always a chance of failure. A one on your saving throw. And since the fine dye market collapsed compared to the pre-announcement prices, it’s even more of a loss.

Personally I view trading as an unethical way of making money (both in RL and ingame). The potential earnings are in no proportion to the money you can earn with real labor. Also trading provides zero aggregate value added. Its just a way for lazy people to make money.

While I would agree that trading for trading sake in the real world adds zero value, player merchants do provide a real benefit providing both coin and items on demand as well as establishing a fair price range based on current supply and demand.

Why can’t they just sell us a dye flat out that is account bound? Why the RNG? Must they bait us into giving them money? It just turns most people off of the gem store I would think.

When they sold us kites you got to pick what color you wanted. Why not a chance for a kite, but you may get a kitten instead.

Because it’s a source of non-special dyes and if they do charge directly it would be in the 400-500 gem range to balance the number of special dyes RNG delivers Vs gems spent.

Ideally they could do both. 600 gems for a guaranteed special dye or a 125 gems for a 1 in 4 chance of one.

There isn’t a design flaw because the game is not designed to have the trading post be the most efficient way to acquire goods. It is the players who took a simple tool and turned it into the most efficient way to acquire goods in order to skip farming.

Once again, everything that is available on the trading post was put there by a player. You don’t have a problem with the market, you have a problem with other players.

All other areas of the game have had limitations put on them so things could not be abused to make excessive amounts of money all except the trading post. So by your logic it is ok that this one and only way to be really profitable in the game is kept this way but that doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that you use it right? That is pretty shortsighted, and certainly isn’t in the best interest of the health of the game, just your way of playing.

No, other areas of the game had limitations to limit how much coin and items are injected into the game’s economy. It wasn’t to limit a farmer’s or dungeon/boss runner’s income, that was incidental to the actual reason.

@Amurond

Gem Store items are priced based on cash value, never gold. ANet doesn’t set the exchange rate. The insistent use of gold to buy gems is what drives up the exchange rate. So players who insist on looking at Gem Store items in terms of cost in gold are their own worse enemies.

Their cash value range between $2.50 to $3.13 depending on volume bought.

Do I think they are overpriced? Of course. But they are meant for desperate players with plenty of cash. And as others pointed out, they work on infusions as well.

Annoying Gem Item since the 15th patch

The actual problem being that players got around the no salvaging of Karma and WvW armors by using transmutation to salvage runes. It was a side effect of transmutation for skinning purposes and now that we have a skinning only system, extractors now have a purpose.

I find it interesting that town clothes vanished in the same patch as extractors were introduced. It’s now obvious to me that ANet knew they were removing the upgrade extraction that transmutation granted and added an item to the Gem Store to provide the same capability.

People always get upset when their loophole/dodge gets eliminated if it’s in taxes, CCGs or MMOs.
