Some can be said with hostile critters off the beaten path. There is an XP bonus attached to every yellow or red critter based on how long they have been “alive” since their were spawned.

Apparently none of the above have actually raided at a high level where it is not only very involvind and intense, but also very demanding of every member. If there are people just slacking around then the difficulty isn’t appropriate.

I’ll just leave this as an example. This is the last boss of the current last live raid in World of Warcraft. Having been an active heroic difficulty raider for many years up until this spring I can safely say that if you’re a hardcore PvE player this is about as fun as it gets.

Remember those impossible boss fights in 2D side scrollers. They kind that you have to remember a where and when the boss was vulnerable and when and where we would attack based on certain actions. Now take that, make it 3D and require 25 players to all work in perfect harmony to defeat him. I don’t consider being a cog in a wheel fun.

Read this and tell me if it sounds like fun to you. I especially liked this part.

New players should ask themselves the following questions before joining a progress raid group:

  • Can I regularly spend at least two evenings per week raiding?
  • Do I want to regularly pay a repair bill of 60g plus 40–80g for consumables per night without receiving any compensation?
  • Is it all right when somebody else gets the item I’d love to have, even if that decision comes down to politics?
  • Can I balance my need for individuality with the need to conform to the expectations and dictates of a group?
  • Do I truly love my chosen class and role, and am I willing to push it to the limit?

Only people willing to answer each of these questions with a loud and clear “yes” should seriously consider raiding. It takes a lot of effort, and the rewards are scarce.

Sounds more like a multi-level marketing scam.

Would this Laptop run GW2 on Medium Graphics?

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Graphics are on the low end side of things. Notebookcheck.com refers to the HD 7650M as

AMD Radeon HD 7650M: Based on the same chip as the Radeon HD 6650M but with slower core clock. 480 Shader and 128 bit DDR3 interface.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

They think the CPU is comparable to the i5-2500 so at least the CPU isn’t a slouch.

Time to limit tp profit?

Again farming dungeon runs, or farming in general is about making gold from nothing. It is a gold source.

Playing the TP is about skimming existing gold from the economy, an activity that also is a gold sink.

Of the two, which one done to excess affects the entire game’s economy negatively more? Hint: EIEIO

Also flipping not an infinite compounding interest affair. Due to the number of players, only so much of any item is actively moved in a day. Flippers are all about short turn around time. They don’t want to tie up their capital for long periods of time either as bids or as merchandise. This limits how much they can make in a day assuming an individual has that item all to themselves in terms of flipping. If there is more than one then competition will limit profits even more.

Raids are bigger, more complex, require more players and tend to have more and rarer loot. Think of it like our DE boss events but taking much longer than a minute to defeat.

Also instead of it being a free for all, it is highly organized and structured and can easily fail if only a few participants fail to carry out their assigned duties.

Personally I’m glad we don’t have Raids because they don’t really sound like fun. I’m not just a member in the band shaking my AoE tambourine every time the big boss makes a snogging sound while facing away or bang my healing drum for the entire hour or simply be excluded because I’m not equipped with the “right” gear.

Nobody plays descent WvW on that small of a budget (or sometimes even a large budget). The FX-4100 is an upgrade but by how much, I’m unsure. If possible get the FX-4300, it’s an upgraded FX core plus it’s a bit faster, but it will likely (guessing here based on US pricing) around another €15-20, which is the opposite direction here.

The obvious choice is scratch the SSD, it’s a luxury that will have little impact on frame rate, but it will help load times (queuing pro SSD crowd in 3,2,1…).

Next would be getting a smaller power supply. The Corsair CX500 will be more than adequate with that setup, no idea what kind of savings you may get (guessing only €5-10 range), it might not be a lot, power supply pricing can be a little odd at times.

After that there really isn’t anything else but the video card and I’m assuming that isn’t really negotiable.

CPU Temp with new PC & FPS drops

We all have to stop assuming that when someone asks about a computer that they are DIYers. Note he did say “i’ve just bought a new PC” not “I’ve just built a new PC”. We of course assume it’s a stock AMD cooler or worse but we don’t know that for sure. And yes his temps were fine. AMD CPUs always seem to run hot if all you know of are Intel CPUs. Now they aren’t.

And while it’s easy to apply a cooler to a new CPU, removing an existing cooler and properly preparing the surface of the CPU to accept a new cooler can be problematic for some. It’s not like adding RAM, an additional drive or a video card. It’s a higher skill level.

Of course this is assuming Sunfury is a newcomer to building rigs. Maybe he isn’t. Classic AMD retention clip for coolers aren’t the easiest to work with. Plus direct contact heat pipe coolers don’t have the smoothest surface to start with and paste application techniques can be somewhat different with those.

Now since he hasn’t replied since his first temp readout with the new cooler lets give him some time and useful links than telling him to get professional help.

blame is irrelevant the issue is this.
Why should tp flippers have the advantage?
why is it actually impossible for any other playstyle to compete at the top level.

The best dungeon runner in the world who can solo a whole dungeon without getting hit cant come close to TP earnings.

The most masterful crafter who knows every single recipe, and what anything in the game can be transformed into cannot compete.

The insane farm master who kills more monsters per hour than anyone else in the game.

The master explorer who knows every knook and crannny, who has seen things most dont know exist, who can do jumping puzzles in record time, and knows every treasure chest and how to get it in minimal time

none of these other types of playstyle even have a slight hope of competing with TP flipping mastery in terms of actual reward. Why is that good game design?

Because the TP “flipper” class isn’t something one designs into a game. It evolved naturally out of a system designed to let players sell unwanted goods to other players and to buy wanted goods from other players, all the while also acting as a gold sink. That’s like saying a “farmer” class is designed into the game.

Economics is a science and one of the best understood aspects it examines is a free market. And in a free market there are inefficiencies between matching buyers with sellers. This is where the “merchant class” comes in and that’s what flippers are.

You seem to be obsessed with the fact that they have more coin than you do and feel the need to punish them for it. It’s not like they are Scrooge McDuck with his money vault. That money is being used on bids allowing players to get more for their drops than what an NPC Vendor will pay for it. Because that’s what most of them are, player run vendors, aka the merchant class. Punish them and we can all go back to selling dropped rares for 2g.

IDEA: add post time limit to TP

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

I’m coming from the perspective that I would like the numbers that represent interest and availability be based on more recent activity that simply ancient bids and listings at prices far removed from the current price range of the item. It doesn’t mean you can’t have out of normal pricing on an item, just that I have an assurance this isn’t from the start of the market when nobody knew what anything was worth.

And this is simply because we don’t have a sense of actual trading volume of an item. We have to base that on snapshots of what’s “on the shelf”. And if I’m going to have to rely on these “snapshots”, I would like to know how many of these items are fresh versus dusty ones with out of step prices on them.

Ok, how about they add an “average age of listing” stat to the screen that shows the average listing age for all items listed at that price?

That would likely be useless except in the most extreme cases. But it could confirm my belief that when an item’s supply gets drained really low that some of the price spike comes from old items. A better idea would be when the last time an item was sold but better TP metrics is not the point of this thread.

Second, almost any increase in a gold source will result in a corresponding (and larger) increase in the money to be made on the TP. This is because each gold piece introduced into the market is spent many many times. Each time it passes through the TP (without a buy order being placed) a flipper is taking 10-50%.

Love to know how you come up with that number.

I’m going to keep saying this until it takes, a flipper isn’t holding a gun to the head of players who sell cheap and buy high, he is merely taking advantage of the fact that those players don’t want to be bothered putting in the effort to sell/buy for a better price. If more players did, then those “evil flippers” wouldn’t have the supply or customers that they make their money on.

For me, I rarely sell to highest seller. I take a moment to check out the price range of the current items for sale and many times price mine at a higher value than the lowest seller because I can tell that the current low sell price is an anomaly caused by someone who is ever so slightly less impatient that your average player who simply accepts the highest bid. Or that the price is churning within a range and I price my item closer to the top of that range.

But the energy drink swigging twitch gamer with the 2 second attention span doesn’t want to do that and it’s that lack of effort on their part that are making traders and flippers rich. So instead of blaming the traders and flippers for their accumulated wealth why not blame the lazy players who don’t bother trying to get a better price for an item, buying or selling, that allowed traders/flippers to fill the niche created by these players.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

I currently have no plans to limit players interaction with the world of Tyria in anyway. I believe it would be damaging to the economy, to the game experience and to the players overall..

We are already limited in the other interactions you mentioned. Some simple examples:

  • one jumping puzzle reward per day per character
  • one world boss chest reward per day per account
  • diminishing returns on dungeon tokens after the first run on each path per day
  • diminishing returns on farming mobs (mystery algorithm used here for security)

I’m not disagreeing with you on your response — just highlighting that we are already subject to restriction in the game to limit wealth that enters the economy.

The TP really doesn’t inject wealth, rather it removes it. So lack of restriction makes complete sense.

As another said, this thread is coming from players who feel their methods of gold accumulation, farming/speed runs, are being limited or removed while traders are unaffected. But all of those activities that Juno listed are gold sources and limiting them makes sense. It doesn’t do anyone any good ratcheting up the money supply since that can lead leads to market wide inflation. The alternative is to add more unavoidable gold sinks or jacking up the cost of existing ones like the TP fees, waypoint charges and repair fees.

TP doesn’t generate gold out of nothing like those activities do. In reality it’s the largest gold sink in the game. Gold that traders make comes from the impatience of other players.

GTX 660 Ti low FPS

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

The game has trouble when lots of players are in your vicinity firing off lots of effects. The game becomes CPU bound due to the number of players present and then the GPU has to deal with all the effects on screen, which with a 660Ti shouldn’t be a problem.

Presently that’s the state of the game. There is little you can do beyond overclocking the CPU to mitigate this problem somewhat. You could also set the WvW character quality to the lowest setting that may help a little bit.

You can also see this problem in PvE events with boss chests like with a dragon, Maw or Fire Elemental for example. It’s not as bad because everyone is attacking a single or few targets and not each other.

While the game is multithreaded, the game uses less than 3 physical CPU cores worth of computational power. Also the rendering thread (actually two closely synchronized threads, one game, one video card driver), like any thread, is limited to the performance of a single physical core. Fortunately you are using a CPU near the top in terms of single core performance. I know this is little consolation.

A flipper is not paying 15% taxes
A flipper make sellers and buyers play that taxes plus a surplus.

That’s just plain wrong.

Flipper puts in a bid at 10s. Impatient seller sells him the item and gets 10s – 15% so 8.5s. 1.5s is sunk.

Flipper turns around and sells for 15s. Impatient buyer buys it at 15s. Flipper gets 12.75s. 2.25s is sunk.

Flipper makes 2.75s in profit, Impatient seller gets 8.5s, Impatient buyer gets the item and John Smith the gold sink gets 3.75s. Of the three getting coin here from the 15s sale, the Flipper gets the least and that’s at a 50% markup.

Flipper isn’t forcing either the Impatient seller to sell at 10s or for the Impatient buyer to buy at 15s. He is also not preventing the seller from selling the item for less than 15 themselves or the buyer from putting in a bid greater than 10s. All that he is doing is turning other players impatience into profit for him.

I think that you believe flippers are buying items already up for sale and posting those at a higher price. That method is simply asking to lose money because you can not prevent other players from undercutting you and reestablishing the original price range.

They both are means of players to ascertain disproportionate amounts of wealth over any other in game activities. Inflation (macro) is not the only problem the economy faces.

Inflation is a far more significant (an actual economic) problem then Joe not being able to afford dyes and skins Peter can.

Yes, because wealth disparity has never been a significant economic problem before.

When 2 million Joes cannot afford dyes and skins that 100 Peters can solely based on one activity, there is a problem. Micro spills over into macro.

Except it’s an activity anyone can participate in, it’s just that most aren’t good at it or are willing to put the time in to become good at it. Just like not everyone should manage their own stock portfolio especially if they aren’t willing to devote some amount of time to research and keep up those market segments.

If it was easy, everyone would do it and then nobody will be “rich”.

The purpose of removing the item (or bid to be fair about it) is that supply, based on total items for sale, will then reflect the current interest on the item rather than some old (I’m saying 30 days), over (or under) priced supply.

And I’m for returning the fees, at least for the first time the trading post database is swept for ancient bids and sales. It’s not those players fault that the rules change fo the TP change. After all the purpose of the posting fee is to encourage reasonable initial pricing so maybe it shouldn’t be permanently blunted.

You seem to mistake the purpose of a gold sink. It’s not a “tax” on the wealthy. I have no idea how you came to that misguided belief. A gold sink is Exactly What It Says on the Tin, a means to “drain” gold from the game as a whole. It’s opposite to a gold source which is exactly what loot drops are.

As for the cost of using a waypoint, it’s a subway fee. I mean you could always walk there and you had to at least once to activate it for yourself. The price scales based on level and distance to the waypoint but never, ever your personal wealth.

Let’s not confuse dailies with time gated rewards. We had dailies before they gave laurels.

Some people need direction. Loki was right in a sense, we want to be rules, dictated to and lead. Drop us in a world and say “have fun” without a hint of what to do other than bash the nearest “enemy” for xp and loot has limited appeal. We want a goal, an achievable goal in a reasonable period of time. Dailies can give some people that. Others would choose to finish mapping a zone or work on their crafting or speed run dungeons or stalk events. Others may play the TP. However a lot of people need to be suggested a goal, what to work on and where to go, today and that’s what dailies provide.

Now the problem can be when the devs tie a specific reward to dailies because then dailies can seem mandatory. The only thing I really spent laurels on is the puppy, but I still do them daily because maybe someday I would want an ascended item. Just as I forge a charged quartz even though I don’t yet have anything I want to craft that uses them. The quartz, between going to the cliffs to mine and charging one takes 15 minutes tops. The daily another hour if I’m not picky about where I’m doing it (well known zone vs zone I haven’t fully mapped out yet). That’s an hour and a half, counting selling look, that I could have spent on whatever I decided I wanted to do that day.

And that’s the problem in a nut shell. Didn’t care about dailies before laurels, now I’m bound to them because I’m afraid I just might need them someday.

Flippers earn their money by turning the impatience of other players into a cold hard coin. The trick is offering enough to buy an item so a player decides it is not worth the wait to list it themselves and sell it for a price that again is attractive enough to discourage a player from putting in a buy order while still making a profit.

A player also have to realize that selling a large quantity of an item to a buyer directly will lead to a buy order for any of that item that wasn’t sold at that previous bid, which is why if you look at some of the trading graphs the lowest sell price bounces down to just above the highest sell price.

Example: Ectos are 19s sell, 16s buy. I dump 250 ectos onto a buyer(s) for 16s but they only want 200. Now the lowest sell is 50@16s and the highest buy may have dropped only 1c to 15.99s. Someone buys the rest at 16s and the sell price bounces back up again to 19s (assuming nobody filled the gap in the meantime). So you have to do a little research to make sure you aren’t pricing your wares at one of these oversold, overbought prices.

instead of 1 per day, should be 7 per week
it’s still pretty kittenty, but it’s better

Except those who log in with 4 hours left in the cycle and have 7 days worth of stuff to do. Oops, they get nothing.

They way to do something like that is allow them to get up to 7 “dailies” done within a week bug each “daily” is worth one time-gated bit of loot.

Of course then someone will come along and say 7 isn’t enough, should be a month’s worth. Then someone will chaff at that cap. They whole point of time gating an account bound currency, which is what laurels and charged quartz are, is to level the playing field between those with loads of free time, and those who don’t. It’s another mechanism to allow different types of players to mix. Level scaling is done so high level characters can play with low level ones. Players with high level characters have likely played longer, having filled their character slots long ago. Sure they may have decided to delete and roll something new for a change but I imagine a true level 20 character is being run by a player with fewer hours in the game than someone who is playing a scaled to level 20 character.

Time gated account bound currency is simply another way to level the field between different types of players, the “hardcore” and the “casual”.

Except to fix the issues lot of the GW2 naysayers have with the game are diametrically opposite to what makes the game popular to those who don’t have a problem with it. They cry bring back the triad, bring back the complex trait/skill system, where’s the expansion. Things that will never be “fixed” because they were intentionally left out/changed when Anet formulated what GW2 was going to be. So there is no satisfying them. They will simply launch thread after thread every time a new living story comes out, every patch about how the game is still horribly broken.

How many of them powered through the entire content of the game in a matter of a month or two, all classes, all races, all zones, all events, all activities? At this point any new content isn’t enough for them. They will blow through it in less than a day assuming they are still playing at all.

If this was a subscription based game they could simply take their money elsewhere as a sign of displeasure but here, they money has been spent already. They can’t unspend it. Sure they can avoid buying gems with cash but they simply don’t have a punitive action they can take other than sit on the forum and complain bitterly how they were led on by that darn seductive YouTube video they all collectively read into way too much, built up expectations to much an extreme, and like an Internet date, find out that disappointed was the only realistic outcome.

And like politics or religion or other polarizing issues, each of these haters will focus on some singular point that if Anet doesn’t fix, no matter what else they may fix or alter about the game, will be the point that makes the game suck for them. So there is no pleasing them. And they will haunt here, being haters, forever.

Sure they think they are helping by being advocates for aspects of an MMO that I personally don’t mind are gone. Things like wanting a way to look at a character’s stats and equipment so they can exclude them from parties. That’s right, the only part of this game that requires forming a party, a part that can have some sweat armor and weapon skins, in a game where every place else you could “solo” and flash mob against bigger challenges, they want a tool to exclude other players who don’t play like them, the “right” way with whatever trait load out or sets of runs or stat bonuses that are the flavor of the week/month for that profession. So why should Anet, who went out of their way to break down the walls that kept players from helping each other in other MMOs, provide a tool of exclusion? Would be kind of bipolar of them you think? And that’s just one example that springs to mind.

But hey, we’re just going to have to put up with this because you can’t get rid of them in a non-subscription game. And after the next “well just you wait till XXX comes out Anet and then you will be in real trouble” MMO ends up being less than their ideal, just maybe we will get lucky and they will decide to haunt that game’s forums.

Back then it was nicknamed Evercrack. But it’s numbers pale in comparison to WoW. WoW blew by them in less than 6 months, 10x the number in only a year.

WoW is a freak. It’s a rogue wave. Nobody is ever going to come near it’s peak ever again short of something like OZ from Summer Wars being created.

They’re temporary because it encourages players to buy now instead of thinking about it more. It’s a marketing ploy like sales and limited editions.

Now you get you be all depressed and somber that you didn’t get one and when they offer them again you will likely jump on it right away, even if that means you bit the bullet and buy gems with cash.

You could slowly build up your gems through the exchange only when you find the price to be “good enough” instead of when everyone is rushing to do it for the new thing.

Well that’s what I do but that requires some self control and foresight. I’m afraid to say that I haven’t met many people with either in my life, especially young people (those less than half my age).

I’m going to guess that it was a hardware problem dealing with your quad GPU setup (each GTX 690 contains two GPUs). Even though the cards draw nearly all their power from the power coming in from the PCIe 6/8 pin power connectors, there is still some 3.3 and 5v power it uses coming from the motherboard, not to mention the actual signalling over the PCIe interface.

Then there are the physical stresses on the motherboard due to the weight of those graphic cards. Flexing and vibration from the card fan could have damaged the connector or traces on the motherboard ever so slightly, introducing signal noise that eventually causes a lockup.

And I would be surprised if someone who spent $2K on video cards would only have a $100 motherboard. It would be like a Ferrari owner buying generic white wall tires.

Redesigning the code ground up to take advantage of CUDA should be a viable solution, but it -will- take a lot of investment and time to shift properly to that model.

Which of course wouldn’t work out so good for AMD users.

Design Philosophy: Then and Now

WoW and the clones spawned in it’s image has conditioned the average MMO player to do two things. Rush to max level and repeat mindless raids where they are merely a cog in a battle plan just so they have a chance to get a piece of their penultimate item set. At least until the next expansion when the first critter you slain gives you an item that outclasses that item you raided 100 hours for.

That’s the nature of MMOs now a days. “What’s the best class/build to max out the fastest?” “Where do I go to get the best armor and weapons?” “I’m max level, where’s the end content?”

It’ll never happen. The buy once play whenever aspect of the game will be damaged if they purged character names or just simply mark them as available so others can steal them. Greatest way to insure someone returning not to stay is by forcing them to rename their character.

ANet want people to return and play. There is a chance that people who play will buy gems with cash. Pretty much a 100% chance that people who don’t play will not buy gems with cash.

500 watt power supply with 35 or more amps at 12 volts is more than adequate with that setup.

8GB, 2×4GB is plenty unless you use some 64 bit image editing package professionally.

The GPU is weak. The money you save going from 16 to 8GB and 650 watt to 500 watt you could upgrade the video card to a GTX 650 Ti Boost.

There are times were if I can pull the critter off of a downed player so they can rally themselves and that’s a better move than trying to assist him with the critter now attacking both of us.

But in a crowd of players, if I can I will work my way over to a downed player to rez them. However if I’m pulling the big bad along with me, it isn’t a good idea.

Upgrading Graphic Card

in Account & Technical Support

First I don’t consider a Sandy Bridge Intel quad core “low end” whatever the speed but I digress.

Of the two cards obviously the HD 7790 is a better choice, being roughly 25% faster than an HD 7770. You definitely won’t maintain 60fps at that resolution on “ultra” but you will be able to beat 30fps outside of the usual WvW zerg scrums and event boss flash mobs. You may have to settle on some tweaks to the settings as Ilithis suggests if you want 60fps.

Yes a better power supply would allow you to use a better graphics card and if you want a better CPU such as the A10-6800K. A good quality PSU is a strong foundation to build the rest of the PC on.

This is the upgrade and servicing manual (pdf) for your case/system, the last section, starts on page 24, deals with swapping the power supply.

Figured it was a P7-1240, it’s a popular store model in the US, then came the P7-1451 which simply has 2 vs 1 TB hard drive and a wireless card that supports 802-11a/b/g/n 2.4/5Ghz MIMO and Bluetooth 4.0 instead of 802-11/b/g/n 2.4GHz and Bluetooth 3.0. Same motherboard, memory, CPU and PSU. I think I saw a UK HP business model with a bigger PSU and since we don’t have little flags next to our names I had to ask.

HP’s case is rather tiny for a mATX case so it’s best to go with a similar size PSU, you see the dimensions, which is a standard ATX12V power supply. So as for recommendations taking Avelos’s considerations into account, the Corasir CX500M, 500 watts, up to 456 watts available at 12 volts. That should handle any current video card south of $500 without flinching. The modular design will allow you to eliminate any unneeded cables because storing the excess in such a small case can be troublesome. Downside is it’ll cost you $10 more for the privileged. Right now it’s $50 after rebate and sale. Rebate ends in a few days.
