Isn’t the rule Vitality if facing condi damage dealers, toughness if facing direct damage dealers? With an already high health pool, and DS spec’d, I favour toughness in WvW (2k) but then I’m a Terror Condimancer..

Something happened last 2 days about deso www population and coverage.

If anything, it would have started to show after Friday’s reset rather than the last 2 days. But things seem to be playing out as normal. Deso’s night force has been consistently phenomenal during the current season, from Mondays onwards. If you look at the last 4 matchups:
Friday reset: Usually a good start until the end of prime time.
Weekend: Usually meh .. depends on opposition
Monday night onwards…
From around 2AM, Deso night force kicks in, lasts until about 8:30AM BST, then dies off until maybe 4PM BST.

BB’s night force is just as phenomenal but kicks in a couple of hours before Deso’s and tails off around the time Deso kicks in. They come back into their own around 10AM BST.

I have heard ‘rumours’ of a Viz guild coming over but have yet to come across them. Deso is all-embracing and a welcoming server .. happy to have any WvW guild join us .. even SFR

But huge influx? Nah – just the same old reprobates jumping off bridges to even up the odds for the opposition..

Krait and Sunless looked good at first glance, but we have no good way to proc those amazing elite AOE effects short of Golem, and I wouldn’t take either rune for just on-entry to plague. Maybe one day when we have an elite that isn’t a minion and has a shorter cooldown.

Hmm .. Krait suddenly looks extremely nice to me. I already use 2 (I have 3 sets of different Bleed duration runes to maximise the bleed duration on scepter and dagger OH. Krait now gives me practically the same duration gain (45% now) and an extra 100 condition damage (175 instead of +75), and on top of that I get an 8s AOE spread of conditions on top whenever I go into Plague in a Zerg .. this is the WvW Condimancer’s dream, isn’kitten
Oh! And add Parasitic Contagion to that ..

VEIL : A command to the mesmer to place the skill veil in front of the commander in order to become invisible and confuse the enemy about to be attacked.
This is different from the the following:
Veil! Veil! Where’s my f——g veil? : A lament the commander will sing when he commands a melee only zerg.

What with Season 2 of the League just over 48 hours away, I thought it would be useful to start a thread defining some of the common terms used in WvW. I’ll get things started but will need your help.

Think of it as a way of helping yourself. Instead of QQ’ing about the Ahhhhs (Achievement Hunters) not following the convention (mainly because they don’t understand what you are on about), help them by explaining what these terms mean!

I’ll get things started with a couple or three ..

Gather on Me : A variant of the more common Stack on Me. This is called out by the Commander who needs to complete his daily, and is tacit permission to farm that ore node or tree at which he stopped the train.

Food Reminder : Usually called out by people on the Commander who has just coordinated the 2 hour defense of Home Borderland Garrison. A plea to be allowed to go to the kitchen to stock up on junk food and beer before carrying out the mundane task of repairing walls, gates and Mesmer sweeping.

Mesmer Sweep : Disposing of all the defeated glassy mesmers who attempted to hide in said above Garrison .. you look at them and they’re downed.. (<3 U guys )

Ignore Sentry : Usually directed at that lone chap who is green/blue colour-blind and doesn’t realise he’s attacking his own sentry. This can also happen if you were green world last week and now blue world (in which case, practically the whole zerg diverts to attack their own sentry).

Hopefully, you get the idea.. so get to it, Guys.. Give back to the wider community!

Before I got serious with WvW, during my Ranger days, I was mooching around on home BL, scouting in NW Tower. Decided to get some supplies so moved onto the Z bend leading down to NW camp. On the path after the first bend I see 5 man group of red looking down the cliff to the camp. I stop to see what they will do when 1 spots me. There’s a short interlude then one of the Reds peels off in my direction. Me thinks: “Cool .. they’re being very fair sending just 1 to solo duel me!” and I get ready to engage.

He runs up to me and drops his exit portal .. and his mates bomb me .. that’s when I notice he’s a mesmer. GG! xD

Clearly those people getting high number of boxes from the Knights are getting the loot that those who didn’t get a drop should of had .. Bug!

I’ve only attempted this once so I’m not sure if Kasmeer does it all the time .. she surrounded Scarlet with Phantoms which Scarlet proceeded to hit. I noticed she alternated north and south sides. The shield drops just before the red circle comes up. Wait until she dumps on one your side, then immediately run in (time it so you are beside her as the shield drops), pop stability (I’m a Necro so, press F then hit plague immediately on or after F) and enjoy the stomp.

Seems to me to be a no-brainer for melee classes to stay on the tag.. for the range classes though .. it’s very situational. As a Necro, I try to think through when I need to be on tag and when it makes more sense to move off.

Using Plague, or when I’m in DS, being on the tag is a must, when I’m being offensive using those skills (when I use DS to escape, I’m usually looking to join my tag or GTFOing). But, when either of those are on cooldown, I’m not averse it finding a safe place on the fringe where I can bomb the tag with WoC or WoD, ready to move to the tag on command, plus judicious use of my marks and scepter/dagger skills..

Griefing .. when someone does it to my keep or tower..

Tactic .. when I do it to an enemy ..

Went to check crossed swords once on our Bay and got into outer just as it was flipped. Hid and got away with it. Hid long enough for the enemy blob to go off somewhere else.. then proceeded to ‘knock’ on inner gate.. I am a Necro so was the only useful thing for me to do. Totally inane since there was no way I could build ram to speed up the process and the DPS I had was cr@p.. But it was enough to bring up white swords .. and the entire blob back to smear me.

The point is .. it distracted then long enough to allow the rest of us to get back to Garri to defend.. Definitely tactic.

Why OS? Why not a new map with a purpose built GvG area?
I quite like the idea of the OP’s overflow map idea .. but I can see a financial model where guilds can ‘buy’ an overflow for the specific purpose of having a GvG (say 1200 Gems?) .. they would then be allocated a serial number and/or password which then gives them an overflow map for however long they want (or a set period of time .. w/e).

They would then be able to issue a challenge to whomever they want, the challenged guild would not have to pay (unless some deal is struck between the guilds).

The map itself consists of 2 areas .. an outer ‘spectator’ area for pre-match and intra-match preps, and an inner ‘battle’ area for the actual GvG.

Entry to the map takes you to spectator area. Entry to the battle arena is by 2 waypoints. Depending on which waypoint into the battle arena you choose determines your ‘team’. There is also a waypoint in the spectator area which is always available .. the 2 in the battle arena become contested as soon as battle is started. They will only become uncontested when the arena becomes empty. If battle is started inadvertently, everyone has to port out to the spectator area to allow a restart.

This is all thinking on the fly so lots there to ‘fix’ but I think this can fly..

To the OP – I was in the same boat as you .. only did WvW as quickly as possible so as to get dailies, monthlies and World completion… until I discovered PVT gear, a kitten good commander, from which point I never looked back!

The day I got a precursor, for me, it was a no brainer .. straight to the TP and 500G later my interest in getting a legendary was gone.

Now, when I’m in a group and someone is waving a Twilight or an Eternity in front of me, it’s not “Oooo, me want!”, it’s “GTFO .. you’re blocking my view!”

IDK how many times I’ve risked my tail to try and help people win a fight without checking to see if they are upleveled. Shame on me or shame on them, not sure.

Quoting a good friend of mine (Hey Poppy!), I’m confused! On the one hand we have die-hard WvW players who swear blind they have no interest in PvE and do everything in WvW .. including levelling up.

And on the other, we have die-hard WvW players complaining bitterly that uplevels shouldn’t come along ruining their game by dying fast, being rally-bots, etc..

I am a level 80 Necro – rank 280 or something (don’t care about my rank .. just the points I need to fill out my WvW traits) – just about average skill (I get by, mostly supporting my guild’s raids of 15 to 20) – in other words, experienced and know what to do.

My warrior alt is lvl 50+ , rank 7 or 8, absolutely no experience as a warrior (only reason I’m doing it is because one of our commanders has asked me to so I can experience the class), but willing to learn. I come to WvW so I can get the rank points and level up. Straight up honest about how unskilled I am. What I need is help and advise – not qq/crying about how quickly I die.

If I’m doing wrong, rather than berating me, it would be more helpful if you helped me out so that next time, I’ll be more useful. Win-win situation delivered!

@OP .. lighten up.. hats off to the guys that pulled that one off! This happens once in a blue moon and shows the sheer bloody-mindedness of the WvWer! Give them their dues for pulling it off!

EotM has barely been out a week, so it’s early days to kitten how A-Net will be taking this forward or how it will affect vanilla WvW. But here’s my take on what I’ve seen so far

Pros:
If you are looking for World PvP, then now you can get in without having to worry about queues. Over flow ensures that you don’t have to wait.

You will always have enough people to achieve something. Get on EotM and look for the tag then go get started. Nice and easy for the not so experienced WPvPer.

Lots of Champs and lots of PvP means more than your average Vanilla WvW rewards. And Gosh! Peeps are getting precursors..

Nice new Map .. yeah, OK .. so lots of placing to fall to your death (and have you noticed that you now have to repair fall damage?) but c’mon .. it’s fun to punt someone over the Edge!

Cons:
Overflows are not Guild friendly. You want to run around WPvP with your friends? Well – let’s hope that you don’t all get put into different overflows..

I love the interaction you get on TS .. the sense of purpose it engenders, with dynamic tactical play, sheer adrenaline kicks it generates, out and out laughs that come from moments of pure madness. The fact that you get a bunch of diverse people from around the world interacting together because they are all on one common server. How’s that gonna work if each week, there are likely to be different servers working together. VOIP becomes a nightmare to manage! Get on TS? Which one?

So .. your Serve… hang on, that would be Colour Faction .. has captured that keep.. way over on the other side of the map! You want to upgrade it, nurture it, protect it.. erm .. no you don’t.. you flip it and move on .. no point hanging on to it because their zerg is gonna come and wipe you and you haven’t got a hope of getting back to protect it. You hate zergs? Well – welcome to Zerg v Zerg ..

You like GvG? Get ye to the Wastelands! You thought you got trolled on the BLs before? Wait till your nice friendly GvG is trolled by those EotM zergs (that’s if you can get your team all together in one overflow and your opponents manage the same).

And last but not least: Where’s my Dolly?

First off – thanks for the increase in Dragonite Ore in vanilla WvW – that was a very welcome update..

But why is there no Dragonite given by the champs in EotM? Is there any Dragonite dropped by anything there?

There may be 1 or 2 trolls on Deso that might react like that, but I’m with hholls there.. not the level of chat I see on Deso at all ..

We have one of the most fun loving WvW communities around (we do have our moments, mind, but they are very rare).

I suspect you may have caught someone at a very bad moment ..

Some great answers here (especially good one by Hubal since he’s explaining why he’s giving you the advice .. nice one, Fella!). All the standard ones are there so my advice is more related to how you can dip your feet in and help your world.

Depending on which class you run, there are some useful tasks you can do while you get used to WvW (this is stuff that really does help but few people want to do).

If you can buff speed (Ranger, Warrior, Guard, etc .. not Necro :-( ), run dollies into your towers and keeps.

Stealthy class? Scout! Don’t get into fights … unless you feel really confident. Just be the eyes and ears that commanders really do love (of course, you’ve already taken the advice of getting on your world’s VOIP).

Got a tower or keep that’s being upgraded or is sieged up? Sit there and make sure the siege doesn’t waste away (once built, siege will degrade, and disappear after an hour .. nothing more disheartening than Garri being taken because no-one could be kitten d to refresh the tons of siege that would have prevented that). And be that voice that brings your horde in to drive away those ninjas that very carefully kept the orange swords off the map!

Will any of the above reward you? Hell no – you miss out on the loot bags and the wxp but you will be loved and respected by every commander on your server worth his/her salt.

All this WvW vs PvE stuff is nothing …
I’m still reeling from the fact that Silent Shino and I are gonna be Colour Buddies for at least the better part of a week!

Why not also have any WvW commander linked by friend list to every other (serious) WvW commander. That way the whole thing can be relayed across the server..

Seems to me the tools are there if the server gets organised..

Removing the ability to rez fully dead would actually be a lot better. It allows smaller forces to whittle down a zerg. It makes commanders take pause when bringing a zerg far from WPs — putting some more strategy into the game.

Best of all, it’s easy to implement and has no direct negative effects on the precious gemstore (compared to removing downstate and finishers). IMO, it’s worth at least a trial period.

The achievements were definitely a drive to get me in the door and stick around past the initial “OMG look at all those red blobs!” phase.

Season 1 League has split the W3 community into haters and lovers – but it looks like to me that the League lovers have just edged past the winning line. I’ve noticed a shift on my server – before the league we were heading towards melt-down. The W3 achievements have changed all that – and with careful management, we will start to build up our community again (please note – not mentioning my server since that’s by-the-by. It isn’t SOS though).

The influx of new players was a hugely welcome development. And that’s a great thing for us all! So thank you, Noobie! Good to have you with us!

I love my necro, I think it owns in PvE (only in my humble opinion of course) but I got so steamrolled the first time or two I tried to do anything I said screw this and ran for the closest exit as fast as my minions could carry me.

Don’t give up on your Necro yet! I started out as a Ranger across all of GW2, came to W3 and did just what you did as a Necro. I switched to Necro and never looked back! Get the right gear, right weapons and you’ll be amazed at what can be achieved. Get used to being steamrolled when you’re on your own but for duels, a Necro is up there with the rest of the classes. IN a zerg, the Necro is an integral part of the good commander’s strategy. In group fights, the first person who is targeted is the Necro; for good reason.

In view of the magnificent accomplishments of Desolation’s mighty warriors, capturing first place in the esteemed Silver League, I’ve built a shrine in my home to the Gods of Desolation. In fact, this is my first time posting in a matchup thread this season, given that the very passing of one of Desolation’s brave soldiers makes me tremble with fear. In the center of this shrine I’ve fixed the image of an Omega golem. On the wings are the images of a gate torn asunder and the cast down bodies of those weak Veteran Guards who were unable to defend my own home server. I keep the candles on the shrine lit like so many scouts through the night, so that it glows in the dark of night, and when I pass it during the day, its magnificence leaves me humbled.

To this shrine I bring an offering each night to safeguard Desolation’s embattled fighters. Last night it was a dead squirrel. Tonight it’ll be a pigeon. I’m hoping to find a rat for tomorrow.

I believe that this experience that has brought us in contact with the ultimate victors in the Silver League must be commemorated, and I urge all my fellow players to do their part to honour these individuals from Desolation who follow a higher calling in their play. There can be no doubt that their total domination has been won through true excellence in strategy, tactics, and sheer prowess in all aspects that constitute this game that is World vs. World.

/Blood cries openly and unashamedly, overcome by the sheer magnanimity of his Gandaran opponent.

I’d like to thank all the servers in the Silver League that battled so valiantly against us – without you, this would have been a hollow victory!

I’d like to thank Anet – for doing such a sterling job in producing such a magnificent aspect of the game.

I’d like to thank all the WvW guilds in Desolation, who, against all the odds, survived some server shaking events prior to the launch of Season 1. Particularly the commanders who put in such long hours leading us through (at times) impossible odds.

I’d like to thank all the PvE players on Desolation, who came to the clarion call to help the overwhelmingly undermanned WvW guilds to push to such a magnificent victory.

I’d like to thank my guild, Candy Shop, for the support and understanding they showed me, even when I lay defeated on the ground.. in particularly Isa .. who always had my back!

I’d like to thank my wife and 6 yr old son .. my wife because she hasn’t divorced me for the many hours I ignored them. My son – well, because he’s such a joy!

Early days of the League Season, they were ridiculously high. And practically at anytime (barring late night, early morning). However, now they are livable for the most part (longest Q time probably during reset).

For example, last night was just a 5 minute wait for me to get on Gandara BL, and it is similar for the other BLs. There’s always likely to be a Q of some short duration during Prime time, but outside of prime seems fine now.

This may not apply to EB, BTW – I seldom go there so can’t really say.

TL;DR – Deso queue times are tolerable now, even during prime.

Thanks right back .. I remember a few fights we had this week. Some good fun (even saw a [CS] go down in the Deso fight in North camp you have in your vid .. not sure but doubt it was me, didn’t go down fast enough to have been me!).

I especially enjoyed the TS you had at the end of your video – sounded so much like the banter we have on our raids that it reminded me how, putting aside all the vitriol we have seen on this match-up thread, just how much alike we all are when we are in-game.

But it makes perfect sense to repair a broken wall or gate after an attack or during even (to prevent further incoming attackers).

Any respectable WvW player wouldn’t waste supply on a wall that continues to be trebbed (no matter what the attraction of an achievement is he says doggedly, looking at that kittening level meter that just needs a few more done to complete). Newbies will do it until they have been ‘re-educated’ – chievies are, well .. just chievies and will do what they will.

We have few enough specific daily tasks that we can do .. don’t reduce them.

YARR on Gandara .. they are my idea of great attitude and a healthy dose of fun that I really enjoy.

Just funning Guys – was the weirdest thing ever .. Lord was outside at the Cata spot at Sunny for some reason. Our guys were encouraging both Gandara and FSP to down him (which both sides did with great relish before setting up either a Treb [FSP] or Catas [Gandara]) then some eejit would come along and res the Lord after we wiped whichever group was setting up siege.

Nothing we said in mapchat or /say would dissuade the pickups from ressing him .. even when we pointed out that he would re-locate back into the keep as soon as the event rolled over.

As to Alliances .. meh .. I can see how some people may be fooled into thinking there is one owing to the remarkable timing of attacks [they seemed to be taking turns] until their timing broke down and the Gandara group came to Sunny at the same time the FSP group got there.

Us Desonians stood on the wall with Popcorn and cheered both sides on. I lost my bet – Gandara beat off FSP.

I’m new to this, but loving this match up.

During prime time, when all teams are full, Gandara beats up on Deso, taking the lead by several thousand points. Once Gandara goes to bed, Deso returns the favour, and by late morning they lead by several thousand points. Repeat. Back and forth… the stronger versus the better organized. Great stuff.

Agree it’s a great match-up. Don’t necessarily agree with your assessment of Gandara’s prime-time superiority though. If you look at the current data, it looks a lot more balanced between Deso and Gandara .. mostly even .. it’s been mornings when both servers have had their best times. Yes, Gandara peaked yesterday for a short time but they’ve been pushing most of today, and this is where most of their points have been made over the last 2 1/2 days.

Right now i’m more surprised that Gandara is still fairly close to Desolation in score.

This week is pretty important for both sides. If Gandara manages to win this week it means both servers are shared first (28 points) in the season. Everything else then depends on the final round between: Desolation vs Gandara vs Abaddon’s Mouth.

Still this week isn’t over yet but i hope that we actual get to this point so the silver league will have a massive final battle for the first place.

I’m not so surprised. Gandara have shown fairly consistent improvement since before the start of the League and were always considered our main opponents along with AG and AM.

And I suspect the result for this week depends a lot on how many Fractal warriors Deso or Gandara have. I suspect that Deso will suffer more for the new LS coming out tomorrow.

But I’m really impressed by how well Gandara have risen to the challenge of the Deso night and morning team. If they win this week, they will have fully deserved it .. and it will make for a very intense week to end the League on.

Hmm .. maybe I should take a week off work next week.

You are such a sad individual, Silent. Shame you don’t live up to your name name and find a corner where you can suck your thumb in a sulk.

It would be relatively easy for pretty much all of Silver League to beat us if you played as dedicated as some of our people have, investing their time to be online at silly hours.

As for Gandara.. has anyone checked their population status recent? It is very high at the moment. So coverage? Meh!

Every match-up I’ve enjoyed so far and I’m looking forward to these next 2 weeks especially. Shame you don’t do the same.
